For several decades the male dominated power structure in Onondaga has tried to keep Haudenosaunee women out of lacrosse in order to maintain their dominance over the Iroquois Nationals men's lacrosse team. After facing pressure from lucrative sponsors and outside organizations to merge the two teams under one banner, a delegation from the men's team spoke to the Grand Council of Six Nations at an unusual closed-door session and the women's team was disbanded without justification shortly after. The women were not given an opportunity to defend themselves and their team's sanction was pulled by the Grand Council which made it impossible for them to compete at the international level. In this episode, John is joined by Katie Smith, Erin Francis and Kathy Smith to peel back the curtain on the inner-workings of Haudenosaunee politics and to discuss these troubling developments. →→→→ Like what you hear? Jason Levesque is the current D1 Women's Head Coach at St.Bonaventure University. He has had multiple coaching stops in his career, including as an assistant for the Canadian Men's Field team. Talking Sixes Global Significance Sixes lacrosse has been in lacrosse news a lot this week, with the announcement of World Lacrosse's new discipline on Tuesday, the lacrosse industry was torn on how to react. Those of us with international ties understand how hard other countries are working to grow the game and how beneficial Sixes will be in that growth. As Jason said during our interview, the eyeballs an Olympic broadcast would provide creates a new wave of potential fans, players, and coaches. Building a Sixes Roster Full disclosure, neither of us know exactly what the roster limitations will be but we do understand that the rosters will be capped and much smaller than the world games roster of 23. With that being said, we dove a little deeper into what types of players we see being beneficial: traditional 2 way midfielders, guys who grew up playing more attack but transitioned to d-mid in college (happens a lot), BOX players. One unique situation we cant wait to watch play out is Blaze Riorden. Blaze is a world class field goalie and an exceptional forward in the NLL. This means that if you plan to carry 2 goalies, which you should, Blaze could be taking runs out of the cage adding important depth in this new fast paced style of lacrosse. The main point here is, teams will be made up of generalists, guys that can do a little bit of everything (guys like Jeremy Thompson, Zach Currier, Kyle Harrison). Becoming a Women's Coach With an impressive resume as men's coach (Canisius, Alma, Adams State, IMG, Team Canada) what led Jay to becoming a D1 women's head coach? A chance opportunity while working at the IMG academy led to Jay having an increased role helping the women's teams. Over time he grew a stronger and deeper appreciation for the women's game until a familiar friend and mentor (Randy Mearns) brought the vacancy at St.Bonaventure to his attention. It appears Levesque is all in on the women's game and hopes that others will learn to appreciate the game the same way he did. Sam Apuzzo is one of the most decorated athletes in Boston College history. During her career with the Eagles, Apuzzo helped lead the team to three consecutive national championship appearances and two back-to-back undefeated regular seasons during her junior and senior years. She holds the all-time program records for career points, goals and draw controls, and is tied with teammate Kenzie Kent for the fastest number of games to reach 100 career points (25). She ranks fourth all-time in assists. She holds the first, third and fourth single-season point records as well as the first, second and third single-season goal records. Over her career, she had four 10-point performances, headlined by a nine-goal contribution against Navy and multiple eight-goal outputs. Apuzzo reigns as BC's only Tewaaraton Award recipient (2018) - for those of you not familiar with this award it is the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for NCAA Football or the Hobie Baker Award in college Hockey - it means she was voted the best of the best. She was also a nominee the year before she won and a top-five finalist the year after. She also claimed the Honda Award for Lacrosse in 2018 and was a finalist again in 2019. She was a three-time IWLCA First Team All-America selection a two-time IWLCA Attacker of the Year, a two-time Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American, a three-time NCAA All-Tournament Team selection, a three-time All-ACC First Team selection, a three-time All-ACC Tournament Team selection and the ACC Attacker of the Year honoree in back-to-back years but what I loved about her most when we sat down was that, despite all of this, at her core she is just a hard-working, polite and humble young woman with a love for the game that I once played at the same college, albeit not nearly as well as she did. She made me proud to be a Boston College alum and, as you'll hear, in keeping with the 10,000 "No"s theme, while she has reached heights at a young age that many of us will never reach her accomplishments did not come without resilience and the ability to overcome setbacks and missteps. SHOW NOTES: Having to always be ready to play for the USA Lacrosse Team, (3:20 // 6:45). Describing her family upbringing with sports, (9:44). Attending a high school where a few other players have won the Tewaaraton Award, (14:13). Playing varsity lacrosse in 8th grade, (17:02). “She kind of really helped me through the whole thing. She told me, ‘They need you out there,’ which really gave me confidence when I didn’t really have much as a 13 year old playing on a high school field.”, (19:19). “I’m generally a quiet person. For me to yell at someone was a really difficult thing even in college too; I had a hard time with that. My coach always pushed me to say things or explain to the entire team to get me out of my comfort zone.”,(21:45). Coming really close to receiving a first place in several championships, (23:52). Receiving the opportunity to get the team to the Olympic Games 2028, (28:25). Looking up to a senior in high school who won the Tewaaraton Award, (30:12). “I think I’m still not where I should be. There’s always room for improvement. It’s weird to think I’m at the top of the elite lacrosse players now. I still think there are so many great players further above me.”, (32:16). Being an alternate for a World Cup in senior year of high school, (34:37). “I wasn’t necessarily the top 25 of my class.”, (36:20). Jenna Abelli laxin at Tufts University Jenna Abelli is the Category Manager for Women's Lacrosse at Cascade, which is a leading helmet and goggle manufacturer in the sport of lacrosse. Jenna was a collegiate lacrosse player at Tufts University before working on the launch of the new Cascade LX women's helmet (as seen in the picture above). The video below describes what went into the design of the LX helmet. In episode 56, Jenna and I first talk about her lacrosse career and any injuries she suffered. Fortunately, Jenna was able to avoid any major injuries, but she did witness many of her teammates sustain injuries. In the sport of women's lacrosse most head injuries come from accidental contact with the ball or stick after an errand shot, pass or stick check. Since 2002, equipment guidelines in women's lacrosse require the use of goggles, but helmets that meet ASTM Standards are still an optional piece of equipment. Goggles were first introduced to prevent orbital fractures. With girls getting bigger, stronger and faster in the era of sports specialization and with newly added rule changes, these accidental contacts have become more severe in the women's game. The LX helmet was designed to more adequately equip athletes in the evolving game. Some of the testing necessary to meet the ASTM Standards includes a drop test, 45 mph stick check test, 60 mph ball shot test and a deformation test. All these tests are designed to match potential forces athletes would experience during a game. The deformation test is important because this ensures the LX will not injure another athlete who chooses not to wear a helmet because as mentioned previously, it is an optional piece of equipment in most areas of the country and world. It is however mandatory in the state of Florida. This decision is left up to the state high school athletic associations. You can find your state's athletic association here. Featured : Black Cascade LX Helmet. Also available in white, royal, navy, Carolina blue and red. Owners manual can be found at this LINK. Key features of the LX: The LX is an integrated goggle system, meaning goggle and helmet are all one piece. This relieves the facial pressure experienced by a separate goggle. The outer shell is protective against impact, but soft to the touch to keep unprotected players safe. A rear adjustable strap allows for varying head shapes and sizes. This feature also allows for multiple hair styles. Large air vents to keep athletes cool. The ability to add team customization to the head gear. Hear what the athletes are saying about the LX. In the sport of American football, the evolving helmet has been a major topic of discussion. This is especially true in regard to the helmet being used as a weapon because players find a false sense of security in the improved technology. During the interview, I asked what Jenna's thoughts were on this issue with the introduction of the LX helmet to women's lacrosse. Jenna and her team at Cascade have conducted a tremendous amount of field testing and although she says players look more confident in double team situations, women's lacrosse is a non-contact sport by nature so the football comparison is unjustified. With that being said, it should also be noted that this helmet is not designed to protect against the same impacts seen in football and men's lacrosse. At one point in our discussion, Jenna compared the acceptance of ski/snowboard helmets (slight foreshadowing to next week's episode with pro snowboarder, Kevin Pearce) and what she foresees happening with the adoption of the LX helmet in women's lacrosse. I will put it bluntly. At first people are resistant because they want to be "COOL" or "TOUGH" , but eventually people realize they are being a DUMBASS by not protecting the most important organ in their body, which is your brain. Besides, what athlete doesn't like more gear?! At a price of $149.99 this additional piece of equipment, which could possibly save your life, should not be a barrier to participation. How much is your brain or your child's brain worth to you? My hope is that the NCAA mandates the use of these helmets because that will make them "COOL" to the rising stars in the sport.
