The often overlooked victims of oppression and colonization are children. I will not wear an "Every Child Matters" orange shirt on Monday any more than I would wear an "All Lives Matter" t-shirt. OUR CHILDREN MATTER! Native Children Matter! Your history would suggest otherwise but we reject all that. Join us for a discussion on the Children of Oppression!

The slogan never should have been "Every Child Matters!" That was like responding to "Black Lives Matter" with "All Lives Matter." We should have used "Native Children Matter" or "Our Children Matter." But the final report from the Interior Department on Residential Schools suggest our children didn't and still don't matter to government officials. The sad part is, we aren't showing much concern for Deb Haaland's whitewash of this American Genocide either.

One of my favorite books is "To Kill a Mockingbird". Can you give an example or two of times you've connected with others through books? Absolutely! When I introduced my sixth-grade students to "The Giver," the story's themes sparked thoughtful conversations and reflections. Exploring the dystopian world of the book together created a shared experience that deepened our classroom connections and allowed us to explore complex ideas and perspectives. Books have this incredible ability to bring people together and foster meaningful discussions.

Clark is a Native American and, while his hike was important to him, it was the story he was sharing with hikers along the way that made his hike so meaningful for him. Clark carried an orange flag that he got people to pose with at every opportunity along the way. Naturally, it accompanied him to Katahdin. His cause was Every Child Matters and all parents will feel empathy for the children involved. Clark sent me several links–below–that will amplify the message. Odette Auger/ CKTZ News - The sun was shining on Cortes Island school Friday Sept 29, as the Parent Advisory Committee shared orange T-shirts with all the children. With a new principal, the team and students were busy all month preparing to observe the day of memorial by raising a Residential School Survivors' flag. Klahoose Elders visited to share their lived experiences and share song, drumming, and hope. Sisters Rose Hanson and Jessie Louie, joined with singer Brenda Hanson. The day was explained in advance, in age appropriate ways from kindergarten to Cortes Island Academy. For high school students, a week of online lunch and learns with the NCTR– shared the full history, along with exploring unconscious bias and debunking stereotypes. Michael Datura is the new principal, and he shared why this day was important to observe, and communicate. “As a principal, obviously the day I feel like needs to be observed, especially given the role that the education system has played in colonization,” Datura says. “I think it's important for students to see the Canadian flag come down and be replaced if only for a moment, if just to acknowledge the role of the nation state in colonization and the continued oppression of indigenous peoples.” Erica Kohn, president of the school's PAC, explained Datura had made connections months before he was on the clock as new principal, and how to do TRC day in a good way was at the top of his list. The Survivors' flag was conceived during the summer of 2021, when discoveries of unmarked graves on the grounds of former residential schools sparked mourning explains the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. It was designed by a group of survivors, and the meaning of the symbolism was explained to students before the flag was raised. Along with adults and children, seeds are visible on the lower part of the flag. “The seeds below the ground represent the children who did not come home. They were always there, but are now seen and searched for,” explains the NCTR website. The Elders led the drumming, with school children joining as the orange flag rose. Elder Jessie Louie shared the emotions running through her, and the impact of families feeling like strangers. “I never thought I'd see this day that I'd be speaking to all these children,” says Jessie. “Wearing the Every Child Matters [t-shirts] to tell a bit of my story. It's part of healing. Every time you speak of it, you kind of let a little bit of yourself go, the hurt that you feel, and that's what I felt today. I kind of feel a bit of relief because the healing journey of the residential school is a long journey.”

It's Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. September 30th is a day to talk about the effects of Residential Schools; about the trauma that continues to ripple across Turtle Island. It's a day that honors the experiences of Indigenous survivors, celebrates our resilience and affirms a now familiar phrase: every child matters. It started with an orange shirt. Taken from a little girl in residential school. Every year on September 30 that little girl tells her story. Phyllis Webstad was 6 years old when she was forced to leave her Secwpemc community - Canoe Creek Indian Band - and attend St. Joseph's Mission, near Williams Lake, BC. For the occasion, her grandmother bought her a new orange shirt. But it was taken away from her when she arrived at the school. Phyllis has been sharing the story of her orange shirt for ten years now. She's written several books about it, including her latest called, Every Child Matters. St. Joseph's Mission operated for nearly a hundred years. It closed in 1981 but many children never returned home. Since St. Joseph's closed there have been two separate investigations using ground-penetrating radar. One-hundred-fifty-nine potential burial sites were detected on the school grounds. On September 5th of this year, Williams Lake First Nation purchased the site. Chief Willie Sellars of Williams Lake First Nations says they want to ensure the integrity of investigations into children who disappeared while attending the school.

“The Orange Shirt Story” read by author Phyllis Webstad with permission from Medicine Wheel Education www.medicinewheel.education This is the true story of a little girl and her very important orange shirt. Six-year-old Phyllis Webstad was as excited to wear her shiny new orange shirt as she was to attend school for the first time. But her first day at the St. Joseph Mission near Williams Lake, BC was nothing like she expected. Her orange shirt was taken away from her, never to be returned. Since 2013, each year on September 30th, we wear orange to honour the Residential School survivors like Phyllis. We honour their experiences and the experiences of their families. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for Indigenous Peoples, local governments, schools and communities to all come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for future generations of children. It is a day to reaffirm that EVERY CHILD MATTERS. Plus listen to me rave about her Reels on Instagram, she's definitely got them nailed! About Christine: Christine Marie, a Filipino/Indigenous Mom of two, launched Awāsis Boutique in Feb 2018 as an online shop. Awāsis means child in Cree. It was the first Indigenous inspired baby and kids fashion shop in Western Canada. After seeing a gap of Indigenous inspired clothing for babies/kids on the market in Canada, she set out to fill this gap. To not only provide little ones with fashion pieces that connect them with their language and culture, but to also educate others about the Indigenous culture. Christine is passionate about making an impact beyond the business sector. To be able to do her part at revitalizing the Indigenous language, which was lost, be intentional about educating others about the culture, give back to organizations that support all things babies/families and act on the calls of reconciliation by engaging in relationships/business partnerships with non Indigenous people. As well as, giving proceeds back to organizations that are related to all things babies + their families. Awāsis Boutique would have not grown like it has over the last few years without the incredible support of customers, suppliers and collaborations. Although she is the face behind the brand, Christine gives credit to the village who has joined her for the ride! In June 2021, she ran a successful “Every Child Matters” tee campaign. Within 45 minutes, 600 tees sold. Proceeds of $9,375 were donated to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. By the end of September, an additional $15,000+ was donated to the Legacy of Hope Foundation + the SPSchools Literacy program. In August 2021, Just Peoples.org was the first YTM Ripple Grant recipient to enable Just Peoples Project Leader Elizabeth (Liz) , a physiotherapist for nearly 20 years in Kenya. After finding it too difficult to turn away children living with disabilities who were unable to pay her fees, Liz committed to provide free support to Maasai families who have a child living with a disability. In addition to supporting children through treatment and diagnosis, Liz also runs holistic programs to break the stigma facing children living with disabilities in Maasailand, who are traditionally hidden away from society in dark mud houses. You will hear how Liz educates Maasai mothers and fathers and debunks the belief that having a child born with a disability is a curse on the family. She shows them that with the right support and treatment, their kids can still live fulfilling lives. She trains parents on how they can meet their children's specific needs and works with entire communities to help shift the current stigma facing children living with disabilities so they can thrive and participate in wider society.Liz shares the outcome of the 3 day camp she ran as a result of funding through Just Peoples, supported by YTM Ripple , and her plans for the coming year. The ripple effect is something you too can create within your own family setting and can experience the growth and fulfillment that meaningful conversations and relationships can drive.Contact: Just Peoples.orgContact: www.kerryn-powell.com.au

Ep 366 - Every Child Matters -  The Lonely Death of Chanie Wenjack Guest: Michael Downie   On January 19, 2022, Chanie Wenjack would have turned 67 years of age. He died in 1967 at the age of 12 after running away from a residential school in northern Ontario. He tried to walk close to 400 miles in the cold weather to get back home.    Chanie was a member of the Ojibway and he was attending the Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School in Kenora, Ontario. He became lonely and ran away. He died trying to get home to see his father. His story is heartbreaking. It is one that Gord Downie of Tragically Hip shares in “Secret Path,” the beloved singer's last solo musical and video release.   Downie said, “I never knew Chanie, but I will always love him. He haunts me. His story is Canada's story. We are not the country we thought we were.” In his last on-stage performance, he called out to Prime Minister Trudeau to fix the problems in northern Canada, saying, “It's maybe worse than it's ever been, so it's not on the improve.”   According to the “United Nations Index on Human Development - Quality of Life,” people who live on band or reservation lands in Canada have a standard of living that is ranked 63rd in the world. The rest of Canada is ranked 6th. According to former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Perry Bellegarde, “6th versus 63 is an enormous gap in the standard of living. It's a gap that represents a disproportionate number of First Nations people in prisons; it represents the high youth suicide rate, which is four to five times the national average; it represents 40,000 indiginous children in foster care and it represents a cap on education funding that is close to half of provincial averages.”   Micheal Downie, the Tragically Hip singer's older brother and the filmmaker who produced “Secret Path,” carries on the work of the foundation the two set up, the “Downie Wenjack Fund.” The fund calls on Canadians to build a better country and to see the people we've been trained to ignore.   Stuart McNish invited Michael Downie to join him for a Conversation That Matters about the need to build awareness, advance education, and enhance connections between all peoples in Canada.   Please become a Patreon subscriber and support the production of this program, with a $1 pledge https://goo.gl/ypXyDs
