This week on the Overdrive Radio podcast, a bit of a double feature. We'll hear from General Transportation and ART Trucking's Jason Decker. Regular Overdrive readers will recall reporting on some of Decker's talk at the Mid-America Trucking Show back in March that was something of a rallying cry for a “whole of trucking” battle approach to the fight against double brokering, leaching money from the freight markets through fraud as it is: Rates are bad enough already, it's sure, as Decker emphasized. Fraudulent actors insert themselves into a freight transaction, disappear with a fuel advance or the entire load's payment. If the trucker's paid at all, then, it's a double payment on the part of whoever was the original broker and/or shipper on the load. That's but one double-brokering scenario. Perhaps worse than that, in Decker's and I know many owner-operators' views, legit brokers who knowingly "give the load to another brokerage," Decker said. "They are double-dipping. Rates are tight enough as it is that one hand in the pot is one too many." Two? Three? Market distortion is all the worse for it, with the trucker on the short end of the stick. Listen for ways owner-operators can recover payment after getting involved in a scam, but more importantly, ways to be fundamentally proactive to avoid and shut out the fraudsters, and those double-dippers, to begin with. Also: Peterbilt's sunsetting of the iconic Model 389 and introduction of the new 589. Our colleague with CCJ, editor Jason Cannon, took a test drive of the unit out in Texas and offers up a walkaround talk with Peterbilt's Jacob White, detailing some of the unique features of the 589. A group of Shadle Park High School students visited third graders at Westview Elementary School last week. The older students handed out buckets of swag – water bottles, erasers, earbuds – as well as a handmade cookie with each students' name, shaped like a puzzle piece.Junior Evie Patel explained to the class.“OK, so what that puzzle piece means is that between Shadle and Westview, we're working together like puzzle pieces work together to make a puzzle, right? And it's the kindness puzzle. So each of you guys is a piece to our kindness puzzle,” she said. While they've been meeting virtually for the past few months – reading books and doing projects centered on kindness – this was everyone's first time gathering in person.“They've been coming up on Teams and they've been reading us stories of how to show ourself respect and other people kindness,” third grader Nyah said. “I think it's important to be kind because, you just need to treat others how you would like to be treated.”The partnership began with Shadle teacher Brooke Meyer, who wanted her Leadership students to work on thinking outside of themselves. She partnered with her sister, Tiffiny Santos, who teaches third grade at Westview.“Westview is eventually going to be at Shadle,” said senior Sydney Tollefson. “We want them to know that Shadle is a kind place and we really care about everyone being included and being involved and everything.”Their current project involves a kindness passport, which Evie introduced last week.“So each passport has a variety of acts they can do, whether that's at home, at school, with buddies, without buddies,” she said. “And then in the end they get a shirt that says ‘Kindness Crew.'”Senior Emma Summers attended Westview herself and has two nephews in Mrs. Santos' class.“I've even seen just a difference in their behaviors and they still talk about the first book that we read to them like three months ago,” she said. “And so, I just feel like what we're doing is really making a difference.”Third grader Connor said at the start of the year, he was feeling invisible and out of place. The collaboration with Shadle has changed that.“Yeah, it actually kind of helps me fit in,” he said. “Kindness is really important because if you give kindness to somebody you show an act of love, and then they want to be your friend.”And after a year of distance learning, Shadle senior Jacob White says this project – these little acts of love – are reminding everyone what community looks like. “These meetings, the goal is to project an idea of inclusivity so that they can have a connective relationship with each other and that no one gets left out,” he said. “I feel like it's important to also remind each other in high school to be kind to each other.”

TRIPPED AND FELL INTO COFFEE Episode 30 Part 1 Bird Rock Coffee Roasters 2212 Carmel Valley Rd. Del Mar CA. Coffee drinkers have different ideas of perfection. For some it's the type of roast, while for others its the search for origin, fair-direct trade or a specific blend. Do you now how to use your local owner or barista to choose and prepare your favorite mouth watering elixir? Does your favorite coffee shop give back to the community and to the farmers who grow and produce the beans that eventually end up in your cup? In this episode of CCCRS (Tripped and Fell into Coffee) owners Jeff Taylor, and his wife Maritza, along with coffee buyer Jacob White, took time out of their busy schedules to sit down and talk with us, about all of that and more! The discussion in two parts that followed,we feel, is a master course in all things coffee. In 1993 Jeff was a photojournalist in Topeka Kansas, and discovered Topeka was "coffee dry". Out of "manic panic" and necessity for quality coffee he opened a coffee shop. Now 27 years later they have a thriving business with six coffee stores in San Diego, and is now part of the PT's coffee family of Topeka Kansas. His philosophy is to concentrate on making the absolute best coffee and the customers will find you. Maritza is from Columbia and in charge of quality control. Her internship from college led her to the Federation of Coffee Growers, a specialty coffee program, and then to judging coffee competitions, where she met Jeff, and it was a match made in coffee heaven. With her sensitive palate it was agreed that Maritza " always has the final say when it comes to selecting coffee." Jacob went from barista to coffee buyer where he forecasts and assesses the needs of exporters, and farmers. He also works with quality control and roasters to meet the requirements of customers and growers. From roast profiles, to what makes a good barista Jacob has the answer. Not only did they receive 2012 roster of the year by Roast Magazine and produce 90 + coffee from Coffee Review, Maritza is a Q grade certified roaster ( a person who is certified by the Coffee Quality Institute who is able to analyze Arabica coffee through smell & taste on site). They also won the 2017 Good Food Award. From selecting the right beans, the "right"country of origin for you. to choosing the perfect roasting profiles, and to what makes a great barista, this episode may become a reference source for anyone who loves coffee. This year we have two new segments. Literary Latte, which will include a favorite book, author, and why from each guest, and Free Refills. In Free Refills I will follow up by phone with a question not fully covered in our on site interview. Our first guest on Free Refill was with Jeff Taylor. In part one he touched on Geisha but I needed more information. In part two you will hear a more in depth discussion of Geisha Coffee. After listening to this weeks episode, if you have a question you want us to follow up with, please email us at contact@crosscountrycoffeeroadshow.com, and we will try to make that happen! https://crosscountrycoffeeroadshow.com/
In this episode of the podcast I had the pleasure of being able to sit down with YouTuber Jacob White. Jacob, has managed to amass a whopping 133,000 subscribers on YouTube which is very impressive. He makes a variety of videos from pranks, hanging out with his friends, and even self set challenges. At first I wrongly thought it was a bit gimmicky but after watching a few of his videos I found myself glued to the screen for about an hour, says it all really. Jacob is a great guy & someone I'm very lucky and blessed to call a friend. The aim of this podcast was to understand what it's like to be a well known YouTube and to to understand more about the man behind the videos. We talk about life as a YouTuber and delve deep into his personal life as well which should be an interesting listen for those curious. In summary this is a great episode which covers so many areas of life and is very personal, so if your looking for a good listen & better experience feel free to press play on this epsiode.
