Gallup: Independent Voters Hit 45% – So Why Does the Political Establishment Keep Pretending They Don't Matter?

Angry Americans with Paul Rieckhoff

In this special episode, Paul Rieckhoff reads an op-ed he co-authored with John Opdycke that challenges the narrative that independent voters don't matter. Despite new Gallup polling showing independents now represent 45% of all American voters—the highest number recorded in modern history—the political establishment continues to dismiss them as "leaners" who are really just partisans in disguise, or "spoilers" who siphon votes from legitimate candidates. Paul unpacks why this dismissive narrative persists and traces it back to Ross Perot's explosive 1992 presidential campaign, when 20 million Americans went off-script and forced both parties to pay attention. The Perot movement produced a balanced budget, the Contract with America, and Clintonian triangulation—and terrified the DC establishment in the process. Today, 10,000 Americans switch their registration from Democrat or Republican to Independent every single week. Five independents are running for U.S. Senate this fall, with over 100 independent candidates expected across all levels of government. A majority of Americans now support open primaries that allow non-party voters to participate in publicly funded elections. The independent movement isn't just growing—it's ready to lead. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. Slavery exhibits removed from the President’s House site on Philadelphia’s Independence Mall are still intact and in storage at the Constitution Center. A federal judge confirmed that fact during a site visit Monday. Almost three quarters of Americans rarely get together with others, even people they care about. That's according to the inaugural Social Connection in America report, issued by the Barnes Family Foundation, based in Bethlehem. https://omny.fm/shows/the-spark/scanning-prices-measuring-belonging-a-look-at-pa-consumers-and-communities As climate change forces wildlife to relocate, The Nature Conservancy is working to help species adapt. The organization just acquired 280 acres in Cambria County to serve as a critical rest stop for increasingly rare, migrating grassland birds. The Trump Administration has purchased a 520,000-square-foot Berks County warehouse for more than $87 million. The deed shows it was sold to the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, as the administration continues to convert facilities across the country into immigration detention centers. More than 300,000 Haitians nationwide were expected to lose federal immigration protections yesterday (Feb. 3) - but a federal judge issued a 6-month extension. Those protections allow them to work in the U.S. and shield them from deportation. The Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed five cases of measles in Lancaster County. Officials say all five cases involve people who were not vaccinated. And a deep dive: Independent and third-party voters are the fastest-growing voting bloc in Pennsylvania. Yet these voters are currently barred from participating in the commonwealth’s primaries. Jessica then turns to the Supreme Court's current docket, spotlighting two major education-related cases: one about the legal standard for disability discrimination in schools, and another questioning whether a religious school can be established as a taxpayer-funded charter school. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:Presidential Approval Down, But Base Remains Loyal: Despite approval ratings hovering around 39–43%, President Trump's core supporters (about 33–35%) aren't likely to abandon him, illustrating a growing divide between the general public and a steadfast political base.Economic Policies & Tariffs Fuel Discontent: Many respondents reported feeling worse off economically since Trump's reelection and a majority expressing disapproval of new tariffs and federal agency cuts.Supreme Court Watch—Education and Religious Freedom on the Line: Two major cases could redefine legal standards for disability discrimination in schools and determine whether religious institutions can operate publicly funded charter schools.Follow Our Host: @LevinsonJessica

With the presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shockingly neck-and-neck, I can't help but question how this could be happening in 2024? Let's confront the unsettling reality of what keeps Trump's base so fervently loyal despite his history of misinformation and lack of clear policy. The stakes have never been higher, and voter apathy among young, Latino, and older demographics only intensifies the urgency of this election. Join me as I express my frustration and disbelief, urging the Wolfpack to step up and make a difference as we edge closer to election day.As Trump's newest string of falsehoods takes aim at the federal response to Hurricane Helene, I dissect these claims and highlight the importance of cutting through the noise of political deception. From misleading accusations against Biden's communication with Georgia's Governor Kemp to unfounded allegations of bias in North Carolina, this episode challenges you to discern truth from fiction. I extend a heartfelt call to action to vote blue and stand firm against chaos, reminding us all to hold onto hope and keep pushing for change. Up to this point, whether Trump was being polled against Biden or Harris, he'd consistently benefitted from the addition of third-party candidates, who figure to loom large this year. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- On Thursday, jurors began their second day of deliberation in the Donald Trump “hush money” trial. Trump has been charged with having concealed payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg alleges that the payment concealment amounts to falsified business records which ultimately influenced the 2016 election. Will we get a verdict today? What happens if former President Trump is found guilty—and could it impact his election prospects? 3:30pm- Marist National Polling's 2024 Presidential Election poll for the month of May shows that Donald Trump leads Joe Biden 54% to 42% among independent voters. Though the poll shows Biden ahead of Trump nationally (50% to 49%) “among those who say they will definitely vote.” Interestingly, Biden had a 5-point lead with that group in last month's poll. 3:40pm- The Trump campaign released a brand-new advertisement where they insist the only verdict that matters is the verdict at the ballot box in November. 3:50pm- While appearing on Fox News, Andrew C. McCarthy explained the bizarre instructions Judge Juan Merchan gave to the jury prior to deliberation—in order to convict former President Donald Trump, the jury is not required to agree on which crime was committed. And in a piece he wrote for National Review, McCarthy explained, Judge Merchan “effectively concealed what should have been fatal holes in [the prosecution's] case.”

Independent voters make up well over 40 percent of the voting public. But you wouldn't know that from media coverage, which focuses almost exclusively on red versus blue. Independents are often overlooked or seen as wishy-washy, bending in the wind. Our guests on this episode say that's a big misconception.  In this show, we look at a huge group of voters, including many young people, who make up a growing slice of the US population. Significantly, the number of American voters identifying as independent is at a record high. Our guests are both political experts. Jackie Salit is the author of Independents Rising and president of Independent Voting, an organization dedicated to bringing respect, recognition, and reform to independent voters. John Opdycke is president of Open Primaries, which campaigns for primary elections in which every American can participate, not just registered Republicans or Democrats.
