Wouldn’t it be nice if our motivation was consistent? If every day we woke up we knew exactly what we wanted to do, how to do, and the motivation to actually get it done? Truth be told, we probably experience pockets of this, and maybe some of you can string together months at a time of getting into “flow.” Finding our motivations and processes is a process in itself, and it’s a journey worth going on. Let me introduce a person that has been on that journey, and done it well, Margo Mountjoy. Margo began her relationship with professional sport as a synchronized swimmer for her home country Canada. Today she is a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Medical Commission, a member of faculty and a consultant for multiple Canadian Universities, and a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Among these and other things, Margo has served as a team physician and continues her research work in the fields of women’s health, anti-doping, and abuse in sports environments. If there is someone who has a great amount of motivation, it’s Margo. Pull up this podcast right now to hear all the things Margo is doing to help the sports world. How Does Your Motivation Fuel You? Although going from professional athlete to Olympic committee member seems like an obvious progression, Margo’s journey was a bit more winding than you would expect. “I didn’t start my Ph.D. till I was over 50,” she says. After she ended her competitive swimming career, she attended medical school and stepped away from athletics to focus on her education. From there, Margo completed her residency and began her career as a physician. It was during residency that Margo found a love for promoting physical wellbeing. Since that time, Margo has often been driven by seeing a need and working to fulfil it. Personal accolades or titles don’t motivate her, simply helping people does, and it’s what has kept her working so hard for so long. Whenever we get discouraged, it’s good to complete an inventory and see what our motivations are. When what we do is greater than ourselves, we can always go a little further. “Nothing personal motivates me,” Margo says. Receiving a hand written note thanking her for her work can mean just as much to her as having impressive research articles published. Keep the Goal in Mind This isn’t to say that Dr. Mountjoy doesn’t get frustrated occasionally. “I’m not someone who is going to solve all the problems in the world,” she says, “It is a little frustrating at times...but you must remain patient and wait for the opportunity.”  As she works on changing cultures and systems, there will inevitably be moments that Dr. Mountjoy can’t control, but she doesn’t feel overwhelmed. She stays ready to act when the moments are given to her. For Margo, keeping the goal as her guiding force is powerful. She has the athlete’s best interest at heart which keeps her motivated and patient during the difficult times. We can learn a lot from her vision. As a runner, it’s important to have those end goals in mind that allow us to enjoy the moment and do the things that are best for us. Whether that is allowing ourselves to eat enough food to keep our body energized, or keeping a thought of those who look up to us in mind as we hit walls on our runs, having sustainable motivation is key. Know Where You Stand Wherever you are in your running journey, it’s good to know where you are. Do you have a pain that is bothering you? Do you have a hard time sleeping? Do you feel like you have less any energy than the people around you? Are you always hungry or always full? We will never be perfect runners, but there is no sense in delaying our potential. Dr. Mountjoy stresses the importance of being aware of all your body functions. Make sure that you are checking in on yourself and doing those things you know will help you perform to your best ability. Get your sleep, eat enough nutritious food, and seek professional advice for any issues that you have questions about. It’s the 50th episode of All Fired Up! and we are delving into the Keto Diet craze!! Join me and my fabulous guest Jessi Haggerty, RD and nutritionist, as we set the record straight on all of this ketosis nonsense. As Keto fever sweeps the planet, we really need to stick on our critical thinking hats. Just what is ketosis, and why is everyone trying to do it? Is it really the answer to life, the universe, and everything, or is it just another fad? Please sign the petition to get this stopped! Jessi Haggerty, RD and nutritionist, has had a gutful of all of the ‘hot diets’ around in January. She has a special pet hate for the Whole 30, which she talked about on her podcast recently. The sister diet to the Whole 30 is the Keto diet! Keto is THE hot diet right now. Jessi wrote a great blog on this topic - a Dietitian’s take on the Keto diet - which is really awesome. Jessi’s intern did a lot of the writing and heavy lifting for this blog, so a shout out to her. The Keto diet has taken the low carb movement to the next level. It’s not like going low carb/high fat is new - we saw it in the 90’s with the Atkins diet. Well, the Keto diet is Atkins 2.0, but it’s even harsher than Atkins! Keto started as a medical solution for children with epilepsy. Paediatric dietitians help kids with epilepsy follow a very high fat, medium protein & very low carbohydrate diet. Dietitians typically recommend that 40-50% of our intake be carbohydrate based, on a keto diet this goes way down to about 5%. The primary reason for doing this for kids is seizure prevention. It is an extreme measure that is only used when the medications don’t work. Because doctors and parents know how difficult it is to stick to such an extreme diet. But this is a last ditch effort in a very difficult situation. And for these kids, the keto intervention only works about 50% of the time. The mechanism of why this type of intervention might work to reduce epileptic seizures is unclear. Somehow, this diet was adopted by the mainstream as a way to lose weight. Go figure! Some people talk about using Keto for disease management, but overwhelmingly people are using it as a weight loss/fat loss tool. Like any weight loss diet, keto has major downsides. Restriction like this is not fun for people, and can lead to disturbed eating patterns and even eating disorders. Metabolic disturbance is also a serious consequence of dieting. How on earth did this diet get so popular! It’s really big in gym culture in Australia - it’s just so popular. We just keep going for fewer and fewer carbs - what’s next! There is a difference between ketoacidosis and ketosis. Ketoacidosis can happen if you are diabetic and your blood sugars get very low. Ketosis is when your body doesn’t have enough sugar in your system to keep everything running efficiently, so your liver creates ketones to keep your body going. Ketones are your bodys’ ‘back up’ mechanism which makes sure you can survive, and find food again. Ketones are not your bodys preferred source of energy, they are a back up system to take care of you when you don’t have enough carbohydrates. ...And this is being sold as a ‘healthy diet’ for people!? We literally hear people bang on about ketosis as if it is a superior way of living. Just because our body can use alternative sources of fuel, doesn’t mean that we should or need to be aiming for it! You’re just putting stress on the body in the name of weight loss. What is the impact on the brain of starving it of glucose and carbohydrates? Brains love these! Jessi’s blog post brought the ire of people who have tried Keto and say that it has ‘worked for them’. Jessi challenges them - what do you mean by ‘worked’ - (it’s going to mean weight loss!). A lot of people told Jessi that it helped lower their blood sugar levels. Which if course will happen, because you’re not eating any carbohydrates! Fiona Willer talks about the concept of ‘metabolic austerity’, where when your body is really deprived of food, it isn’t even well enough to be sick…It doesn’t mean that the underlying health condition has improved, it’s just being suppressed. For every negative response to her blog, Jessi got 10 messages from people who said the Keto diet had major side effects - they couldn’t think clearly, couldn’t concentrate in classes etc. It chips away at you little by little. Of course, not being able to poo is a problem because not enough fibre! This is a big deal! People are voluntarily not pooing? No thanks! Plus, the bad breath thing. It’s a side effect of the ketones having that specific smell. Gross! Keto diets have become so popular in Australia, that in some rural and remote areas the pharmacies have sold out of urine strips, so people with actual health condition can’t monitor themselves. Because gym dudes want to check they’re in ketosis! To be so obsessed with wee and to forget all about poo, doesn’t seem right to me. This diet is so unsustainable. Getting and staying in ketosis is really difficult. A lot of people who are doing this are torturing themselves and not even getting into this ‘glorified state’. It’s a lot of work for very little benefit. We have no solid research that this diet is helpful at all, aside from the evidence for kids with epilepsy. We don’t even do this treatment for adults with epilepsy. The research is only short term. And we know from 70 years of weight research that weight loss is likely to be temporary only, and the impact on metabolism is quite scary potentially. Although Jessi wrote the blog a while ago, she is still getting comments! One comment said that Jessi is “drowning in carb-tard cognitive dissonance”! WTF! The Keto people are a bit us and them - what is a carb-tard! If they’re saying there is something wrong with people’s brains because they eat carbs - that’s the pot calling the kettle black! If this diet makes you feel restricted and you’re struggling, it’s probably not for you. If it works for you, that doesn’t mean that the entire body of science is wrong. If the majority of people aren’t doing well, that means something - go elsewhere! Selling this as if there is no risk is the real cognitive dissonance. Won’t it be nice when we can go back to the high carb fads again! There will always be a fad to talk about. Louise tells her story about being scammed out of $300 with a ‘keto ultra diet’ pill! There is a lot of privilege involved in selling ketosis. It’s paying a lot of money to starve yourself. If you are tempted to diet, take a step back and ask yourself - what is the problem I am trying to solve here? Is there even a problem? A lot of the time, nothing is wrong. And these weight loss ‘solutions’ create a whole world of problems. And take a close look at the science. And always go non diet!!! Please sign the petition to get this stopped! Jessi Haggerty, RD and nutritionist, has had a gutful of all of the ‘hot diets’ around in January. She has a special pet hate for the Whole 30, which she talked about on her podcast recently. The sister diet to the Whole 30 is the Keto diet! Keto is THE hot diet right now. Jessi wrote a great blog on this topic - a Dietitian’s take on the Keto diet - which is really awesome. Jessi’s intern did a lot of the writing and heavy lifting for this blog, so a shout out to her. The Keto diet has taken the low carb movement to the next level. It’s not like going low carb/high fat is new - we saw it in the 90’s with the Atkins diet. Well, the Keto diet is Atkins 2.0, but it’s even harsher than Atkins! Keto started as a medical solution for children with epilepsy. Paediatric dietitians help kids with epilepsy follow a very high fat, medium protein & very low carbohydrate diet. Dietitians typically recommend that 40-50% of our intake be carbohydrate based, on a keto diet this goes way down to about 5%. The primary reason for doing this for kids is seizure prevention. It is an extreme measure that is only used when the medications don’t work. Because doctors and parents know how difficult it is to stick to such an extreme diet. But this is a last ditch effort in a very difficult situation. And for these kids, the keto intervention only works about 50% of the time. The mechanism of why this type of intervention might work to reduce epileptic seizures is unclear. Somehow, this diet was adopted by the mainstream as a way to lose weight. Go figure! Some people talk about using Keto for disease management, but overwhelmingly people are using it as a weight loss/fat loss tool. Like any weight loss diet, keto has major downsides. Restriction like this is not fun for people, and can lead to disturbed eating patterns and even eating disorders. Metabolic disturbance is also a serious consequence of dieting. How on earth did this diet get so popular! It’s really big in gym culture in Australia - it’s just so popular. We just keep going for fewer and fewer carbs - what’s next! There is a difference between ketoacidosis and ketosis. Ketoacidosis can happen if you are diabetic and your blood sugars get very low. Ketosis is when your body doesn’t have enough sugar in your system to keep everything running efficiently, so your liver creates ketones to keep your body going. Ketones are your bodys’ ‘back up’ mechanism which makes sure you can survive, and find food again. Ketones are not your bodys preferred source of energy, they are a back up system to take care of you when you don’t have enough carbohydrates. ...And this is being sold as a ‘healthy diet’ for people!? We literally hear people bang on about ketosis as if it is a superior way of living. Just because our body can use alternative sources of fuel, doesn’t mean that we should or need to be aiming for it! You’re just putting stress on the body in the name of weight loss. What is the impact on the brain of starving it of glucose and carbohydrates? Brains love these! Jessi’s blog post brought the ire of people who have tried Keto and say that it has ‘worked for them’. Jessi challenges them - what do you mean by ‘worked’ - (it’s going to mean weight loss!). A lot of people told Jessi that it helped lower their blood sugar levels. Which if course will happen, because you’re not eating any carbohydrates! Fiona Willer talks about the concept of ‘metabolic austerity’, where when your body is really deprived of food, it isn’t even well enough to be sick…It doesn’t mean that the underlying health condition has improved, it’s just being suppressed. For every negative response to her blog, Jessi got 10 messages from people who said the Keto diet had major side effects - they couldn’t think clearly, couldn’t concentrate in classes etc. It chips away at you little by little. Of course, not being able to poo is a problem because not enough fibre! This is a big deal! People are voluntarily not pooing? No thanks! Plus, the bad breath thing. It’s a side effect of the ketones having that specific smell. Gross! Keto diets have become so popular in Australia, that in some rural and remote areas the pharmacies have sold out of urine strips, so people with actual health condition can’t monitor themselves. Because gym dudes want to check they’re in ketosis! To be so obsessed with wee and to forget all about poo, doesn’t seem right to me. This diet is so unsustainable. Getting and staying in ketosis is really difficult. A lot of people who are doing this are torturing themselves and not even getting into this ‘glorified state’. It’s a lot of work for very little benefit. We have no solid research that this diet is helpful at all, aside from the evidence for kids with epilepsy. We don’t even do this treatment for adults with epilepsy. The research is only short term. And we know from 70 years of weight research that weight loss is likely to be temporary only, and the impact on metabolism is quite scary potentially. Although Jessi wrote the blog a while ago, she is still getting comments! One comment said that Jessi is “drowning in carb-tard cognitive dissonance”! WTF! The Keto people are a bit us and them - what is a carb-tard! If they’re saying there is something wrong with people’s brains because they eat carbs - that’s the pot calling the kettle black! If this diet makes you feel restricted and you’re struggling, it’s probably not for you. If it works for you, that doesn’t mean that the entire body of science is wrong. If the majority of people aren’t doing well, that means something - go elsewhere! Selling this as if there is no risk is the real cognitive dissonance. Won’t it be nice when we can go back to the high carb fads again! There will always be a fad to talk about. Louise tells her story about being scammed out of $300 with a ‘keto ultra diet’ pill! There is a lot of privilege involved in selling ketosis. It’s paying a lot of money to starve yourself. If you are tempted to diet, take a step back and ask yourself - what is the problem I am trying to solve here? Is there even a problem? A lot of the time, nothing is wrong. And these weight loss ‘solutions’ create a whole world of problems. And take a close look at the science. And always go non diet!!! Running and Eating: Nutrition, Dieting, and Eating Disorders Let’s get this out in the open right from the get go. The wonderful world of eating is not always so wonderful for runners. Whether you are an elite runner, a new runner looking to lose some pounds, or one of the many runners in between, making food decisions is difficult. Carbo-loading. Keto. Superfoods. Macronutrients. Intermittent fasting. Detox. These are just a few of the phrases and words that have kept you on health blogs and Wikipedia pages for hours. Each one with its own purpose and promise. Deciding when, how much, and what to eat can be stressful for anyone and especially for those with specific physical goals. Choosing between all the competing voices on food is as an important decision as any and should be done with care. Our bodies deserve it. Harvard nutritionist Meg Schrier and dietician Jessi Haggerty have been helping athletes make positive food choices for many years. They have experience working with a variety of elite athletes and non-athletes, including helping those with eating disorders. When it comes to answering the difficult food questions, they are some of the best. In this article and podcast, they provide us with some basic tips and clues in navigating the world of eating. Eating Disorders Let’s begin with one of the most difficult topics. Even if you have never personally dealt with an eating disorder, this is a subject worth learning about. Eating disorders likely effect more people than you think. Understanding the early signs of eating disorders can help not only the people around you, it can help you. Maintaining a positive relationship with food is important to staying healthy and avoiding the dangerous diseases that are eating disorders. How do I know if I have an eating disorder? What should I do? You don’t need to be incredibly skinny or weak to have an eating disorder. And you don’t need to have an eating disorder to make a behavior change. To know if you need help Meg suggests asking yourself a few questions. “How much are you thinking about food throughout the day? [Is food] causing you not to go to events or be with friends and loved ones?” She continues by suggesting that if food is becoming everything, it’s something you should talk about. Jessi adds that if your behaviors no longer feel like a choice, it’s a good opportunity to seek a higher level of care. Finding a Support Team If you have discovered that there is a behavior you want to change, having a support team is crucial to your success. If you can, confide in a friend, a family member, or a teammate. Having someone that you can always talk to and that you trust is very powerful. They can help you feel in control of your actions and give support when you need it. Next, find a therapist that you are comfortable with. “It’s important to find a therapist that specializes in eating disorders…and then do some trial and error,” says Jessi. “It is hard to parse out what is fear of going through the therapeutic process and what is [knowing] it’s not a good fit.” Therapy is great, but not all therapists match up with their clients perfectly. If you find yourself not agreeing with your therapist on matters that are important to you, it’s okay to switch. Stick with it. Find a good one. In addition to a therapist and a trusted friend, it can be very beneficial to work with a nutritionist, dietician, psychiatrist, or endocrinologist. There are many options out there and depending on what city you live in, there will probably be a good handful of people you can choose to work with. Listening to and Understanding Your Body Whenever you make changes in your activity, your body has to adapt. If you are adding lots of miles to your runs, increasing speed, or adding new workouts, you are going to have to learn how your body reacts. Do your best to listen to your body and realize that you may not understand everything all at once. “It is hard to eat intuitively when you are training at a high-level,” says Meg. You may feel like a child when you can’t tell if you are hungry, but it is common when you train hard, especially when burning a lot of calories. How are you supposed to decide when to eat? One tip Meg gives is to rest. A little bit of rest can help you know if you are feeling like you should eat or not. In addition, working with a dietician can help you eat when you don’t think you are hungry and vice-versa. Love Your Amazing Body Your body is amazing. It allows you to move. It is strong. It deserves to be treated well because it gives you so much. Always be in touch with what it needs, and it will continue to let you have fun.
