Ever trained harder than ever for a marathon — nailed every long run, crushed the speed work, felt stronger than ever — only to have race day fall apart? That's exactly what happened during my 5th marathon at the Steel Rail Marathon. I made one key mistake that completely sabotaged my race… and it had nothing to do with how fit I was. In this episode, I'm sharing what went wrong, why it happened, and how you can avoid making the same costly error — especially if you're chasing a PR, qualifying time, or just want to run strong and healthy to the finish.

#490 Athlete Success Story Paul Hunziker Welcome Welcome to Episode #490 of the 303 Endurance Podcast. We're your hosts Coaches Rich Soares and April Spilde. Thanks for joining us for another week of interviews, coaching tips and discussion. I am personally very excited about this episode. I have had the privilege of coaching Paul Hunziker since August of 2024. It's not uncommon to have a new athlete and see their training history and see lower than planned training like missed workouts. Paul was the exact opposite. Paul is a workhorse and really needed a coach to reign him in rather than spur him on.  Paul recently blew his estimated marathon time by more than 10 minutes with an exceptionally executed pacing and nutrition plan finishing in 3:14:13. We are going to have that interview for your today plus much, much more! Hi Rich! Man, I am so looking forward to talking with Paul and hearing about his marathon journey and all the growth in between! I am also stoked to watch IM 70.3 St George tomorrow morning AND race Fandango (not at the same time of course). Will you be tuning into St. George?   Show Sponsor: UCAN UCAN created LIVSTEADY as an alternative to sugar based nutrition products. Whilst you all were out there tackling the ice cold waters of the Chatfield Reservoir, I was out there taming the wilds of Stage 3 of the Pike's Peak APEX! I had the hardest, most heart-pumping, adrenaline inducing ride of my life! I also had a bit of a spill. As I said at the start, Paul Hunziker from Tacoma Washington has an incredible work ethic. When we charted his strategy for this year, it was clear he wanted to PR a marathon and finish an full-distance IRONMAN. He recently checked off the former and is now focused on the latter.    Get Gritty Tip: Just Get Started Alright athletes, it's time to Get Gritty. Today's theme is simple—but powerful: just get started. Here's the truth: most goals don't fail because of a lack of talent. They fail because we wait for the “perfect time,” the “perfect plan,” or the “perfect mindset.” But perfection is a myth. If you're waiting for the stars to align before you take action—you'll be waiting forever. Getting started is where the transformation begins. It doesn't have to be a full-send workout. It can be putting on your running shoes. Opening your training plan. Logging that first 10-minute spin. One small step creates momentum, and momentum creates belief. Every big success story you admire? It started with one decision to move forward—often imperfectly. So the next time resistance whispers in your ear, “Not today,” or “You're not ready,” I want you to respond with action. Any action. Forward is forward. Because once you're in motion, everything changes. The path reveals itself, the confidence builds, and before you know it—you're becoming the athlete you imagined. So this week, don't overthink it. Just get gritty. And just get started.   TriDot Workout of the Week:  Workout Summary: Functional Threshold Test (20-minute) Session Note: Warmup 10 min @ Z2 with 3 x 30 sec (30 sec) Spinups and 3 x 1 min (1 min) @ Z4   Main Set 20 min - all out maximal effort Pacing Tip: Start at the average watts of your previous month's 20-minute. Use erg mode to control the effort. 1st 5' - hold that previous 20-minute average, 2nd 5' - slowly increment watts until you reach a perceived limit, 3rd 5' the same. Last 5' can be more aggressive. Be sure to enter/confirm your assessment results to update your training intensities and race projections.   Fun Segment: Triathlon Fandango! A wild mix of multisport mayhem—where strategy meets spontaneity, and nothing goes according to plan!   According to the Oxford Dictionary, a Fandango is a lively Spanish dance for two people, typically accompanied by castanets or tambourine.   It can also be a foolish or useless act or thing. So with that context, are you ready for TRIATHLON FANDANGO!  In this segment we'll throw a little controlled chaos into your training day! A ‘fandango' is usually a lively dance or an unpredictable situation… and let's be honest, that sounds a lot like your last transition, doesn't it? In this segment, we celebrate the unexpected moments, awkward moves, and off-the-cuff brilliance that only triathletes truly understand. Blockbuster Buoyancy You have to swim in a costume from your favorite movie—what do you choose and how do you make it hydrodynamic? Bonus points if it involves a cape, fins, or lightsaber. Snack Station Showdown Your only bike nutrition can come from gas station snacks. Build your fueling plan using three items and explain how they power your ride. (Yes, you can pick a taquito or tornado, but good luck with the aftermath.) Discipline Detour You must swap one triathlon leg with a totally unrelated skill—karate, chess, salsa dancing… what do you pick and why would it give you a competitive edge? Just imagine the T1 transition into a full tango. Bag Swap Roulette You have to trade your tri bag for a mystery duffel handed to you at check-in. What's the one item you're praying is inside—and what would send you straight into panic mode? Please let it be chamois cream… please. Celebrity Play-by-Play Your entire race will be commentated live by one celebrity. Who do you choose, and what kind of outrageous commentary are they dropping mid-race? Morgan Freeman narrating your port-a-potty stop? Iconic. And that's a wrap on this round of Triathlon Fandango—where the weird gets wilder, the hypothetical gets hilarious, and the only thing more unpredictable than your T1 socks is what we'll spin up next time. Got a ridiculous scenario you want us to tackle? Send it our way and keep the Fandango fun rolling. Until then, stay weird, race hard, and never underestimate the power of a good snack and a wild imagination! Closing: Thanks again for listening this week. Please be sure to follow us @303Triathlon and @grit2greatnessendurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment. We'd really appreciate it! Stay tuned, train informed, and enjoy the endurance journey!

“The 3:05 was a shock. It's not something that I expected. The approach that we're taking is how quick can you get on the volume of training that you're currently doing, and then you can increase it, and then you can get faster,” says Steph Clutterbuck, a professional triathlete, as she reflects on her remarkable marathon performance at Ironman Chattanooga and the gradual, deliberate strategy that led to her unexpected personal best. Steph joins Brad Miles in this episode and opens up about her journey from swimmer and rower to professional triathlete, with only ten months under her belt as a pro. How did she manage to secure a Kona qualification so early on? Steph shares her strategy of focusing on quality over quantity in her run training and explains how minimal run volume led to her unexpected marathon success. But what did it take for her to refine her form while staying injury-free? Steph talks about the mental and physical aspects of racing and also shares the mindset shifts that helped her perform at the highest level. As she gears up for Kona, her insights into balancing ambition with smart training make this episode a must-listen for athletes aiming to push their limits. Quotes “I wasn't running efficiently enough to be able to execute run sessions. I was just getting so tired from trying to hit paces that I should have been able to hit early last year around a 1.24 half marathon, which isn't awful. It's pretty good. I couldn't get anywhere close to half marathon race pace and training. So, it just wasn't making sense. Whereas now, I'm able to run efficiently enough that I can actually execute run sessions.” (24:44 | Steph Clutterbuck) “In my mind, I needed to run more without running more. I think I don't know how else to explain it. All I needed to ingrain was better movement patterns, and then it's all about habit forming. We all know that the best way to form a habit is to do the action more frequently. But with running, when you're running at full body weight, the injury risk increases exponentially with it. Whereas with the lever system, I can run more without running more, but I can reduce my body weight and therefore reduce the risk of injury.” (26:07 | Steph Clutterbuck) “I just was in this completely zen flow state where the world seemed to cease to exist. I was just running and I was focusing on the sound of my feet hitting the floor.” (38:15 | Steph Clutterbuck)   Links Connect with Steph Clutterbuck: https://www.instagram.com/stephclutterbuck/   https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/  https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Jonathan's Tolksdorf is a true RC success story. He took up running with no sports background and through a combination of hard work and learning from his mistakes, has lowered his marathon PB to 2:52 while running 169 marathons since his first in 2000. He was one of the first RC athletes back in 2012 and joined us from his hometown of Lahti Finland to share the lessons that helped him to take over an hour and a half off of his marathon time. Jonathan reached out to us about sharing his running story and after reading about his experience in the sport, we knew this would be a great conversation. He is somebody with a genuine passion for the sport and a willingness to learn. Today, he shares the lessons that have been the most important to his improvement.  During the show, you'll hear from Jonathan about his training including: How more structured training with RC helped him to run his first sub-3 marathon Why flexibility is important in your training Why it can be detrimental to put too much pressure on your workouts Ways you can improve your taper strategy to feel good on race day  How to find purpose in your running What makes this story so relatable is that Jonathan has many of the same goals and has made so many of the same mistakes as just about any new marathoner. He has some great insights for other runners and I'm excited to share them with you. Achieving a sub-2:50 time is my next goal, and I'm excited to share the valuable insights from Sam's experience. Sam embarked on his marathon journey with the 2015 Bristol to Bath Marathon, clocking just over 3h30 alongside his brother. With a newfound focus on training, Sam tackled the London Marathon next, achieving an impressive sub-3-hour finish in 2h57. Through dedication and smart training, he has steadily improved his time to 2h37, crediting consistency and injury prevention for his progress. Looking forward, Sam aims to break the 2h30 barrier, but it's mainly to enjoy running all over the world and make friends whilst doing it!

While there's a lot of well-meaning guidance available, the truth is that what works for someone else might not work for you. Having run eight sub-three-hour marathons with four different training approaches, I'm now trying a fifth method. I understand that advice based solely on my experience may not be the best fit for everyone. Effective training requires context and an understanding of the individual. That's why I encourage you to learn from others but also think for yourself when adopting new training programs. I'll share lessons from others about training and life that have influenced me. I'll also reflect on my new 5K PR and the processes and lessons I took from that achievement. In episode 4 of this series, I'll have a special guest joining me. His website, podcast and blog reach hundreds of thousands of runners every month and have been featured in Runner's World, The Washington Post, Health Magazine, USA Today, and The Huffington Post among others. His contributions to the running community were recognized in 2017 when he was named Men's Running Magazine Influencer of the Year. He is a USA Track & Field certified coach and has been running competitively since 1998, when he ran for Connecticut College. After a major IT Band injury in 2008 following the New York City Marathon, Jason embarked on a mission to help other runners avoid injuries while still improving their performance. Since then Jason has helped thousands of runners do just that and even found the time to improve his own marathon PR, finishing the Philidelphia Marathon in 2:39. He recently adapted the training journal he has kept religiously over the last 25 years. The Performance Training Journal includes coaching advice on racing, injury prevention, strength training, and more. It will guide you through race scheduling, how to plan your race morning, the best workouts for endurance runners, and encourage you to track your personal bests over time. Professional runner Maegan Krifchin wanted to make the 2022 NYC Marathon an epic day. A native of Long Island, the Atlanta Track Club runner visualized bettering her 2:30 PR (2021 Chicago Marathon) while also breaking the 2:30 barrier, cracking the top 10, and shining her brightest on November 6. That did not happen, and it was heartbreaking. But it led Meagan on a marathon adventure that would see her run the Philadelphia Marathon two weeks later, on November 20, almost grabbing the win, and then CIM in Sacramento, California, two weeks after that, on December 4. Along the way, Maegan realized the importance of shaking things up, being playful among the seriousness of big pursuits, and how going after wild goals can reignite your ambitions. She also got that sub-2:30 PR, at CIM! Maegan tells her story in her own voice. It was an absolute honor and a blast to host this convo with world-class entertainer, mentalist/mind reader, and Emmy winner, Oz Pearlman. When Oz isn't blowing the minds of audiences around the world, he is an avid marathon and ultra-marathon runner, having completed such grueling races as the Badwater 135 Miler, Hawaii Ironman World Championships, Western States 100, and Spartathlon. Oz ran a 2:29 in the 50th NYC Marathon, placing 33rd overall, and holds a 2:23 Marathon PR! On 4/8/2022, Oz is trying to break the record for most miles ever run in a day around Central Park since it was founded in 1858. This means running over 100 miles nonstop from 6am to 1am, over and over around one of the most iconic loops on the planet. He is running in support of the Save the Children Ukraine Relief Fund (you can donate here). Oz matched the first $10K donated and has a goal of raising $100K! For NYC locals and run clubs, home base will be at Engineers Gate, 90th & 5th, come on out and share some miles for a great cause! We discuss: running with purpose, the NYC Marathon, Sparthalon, Badwater 135, his training approach for the Central Park FKT record attempt, his 'why', nutrition, his upcoming appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast, Adam Skolnick, David Goggins, power couple Mike Halovatch and Kate Pallardy, the Keys 100, and much more. My favorite part was getting my mind read at the end of the episode... and having it be FULLY blown! I'm rooting hard for Oz to get it DONE and raise that $100K! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! However, Michael had never ran competitively before. Naturally this made him unaware that you actually had to qualify for the race. I'm so excited to share Darcie Brodsky's INSPIRATIONAL story! Darcie is a total rockstar, an elite educator, badass runner mom, and someone I’m super proud to call friend. Darcie dreamed of being a teacher from her childhood days and we dialed it back to 2008, Savoonga, Alaska, where she first discovered her love for helping children read. After moving to Texas, she began working as a reading specialist focusing on kids that required more attention. After completing certification to become a Licensed Dyslexia Therapist, Darcie began working with small groups of dyslexic students (1st-5th grade) that needed more help sorting, recognizing, and organizing language. To hear the pride in her voice when they master how to unlock words and read on their own is deeply moving! She launched Run HBE, a passion project, with the help of three colleagues, Sara Head, Kate Olsson, and Vanessa Del Valle, to get children engaged with running. They've seen incredible growth and success so far and I'm so excited to see how they can build this out even further. To no surprise, all of this led to Darcie being nominated by her peers and awarded Teacher of the Year in 2019! And, of course, this wouldn't be a true RunChat if we didn't talk at least a little shop. We talk about her being overtrained and fighting burnout in her running and how she found the joy again, leading to a 2-minute Marathon PR in Houston. Darcie recently began working with Lindsay Flanagan who placed 9th in the 2019 Boston Marathon and I'm so excited to follow their work together to get Darcie that coveted BQ. Where would we be in our lives without great teachers? When we pursue our true passions in life, great things are bound to happen! Ryan Hall is a Dual US Marathon Olympian who has competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games finishing in 10th place and also in the 2012 London Games where Ryan was forced to retire early from the race for the first time in his career at approx. 10 miles. Ryan's best accolades are the outstanding US record he holds for the Half Marathon with a 59:43 in 2007 for the Houston Half Marathon, a record that still stands to this day. In 2011 in the Boston Marathon, Ryan achieved a 2:04:58 for the full marathon, he is still the only American Marathoner to go sub 2:05. In addition to Ryan's phenomenal 20 year distance running career, Ryan is now also known as a Best Selling author if his recently release memoire: Run the Mile You're In: Finding God in Every Step. During this episode we touch on a lot more than Ryan's running career, we certainly speak about the highs, the lows and the learnings, but Ryan also shares candidly around the process of adopting 4 Ethiopian Sisters several years ago. Ryan outlines how he went from a basketball loving teenager who had no interest in running to one day feeling inspired to run a 15 mile lap of his local lake. Ryan shares around why he thinks that eating a lot of bread the day before he ran 59:43 may have been so important, the concept of why happy feet make light feet, while listening to your body more than your watch can be so important in training. What it was like running 7 marathons in 7 countries in 7 days for the World Marathon Challenge and Ryan survives a Physical Performance Round. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Mike completely disrupts the long-distance paradigm - instead of 1-2 marathons a year, he might do that many in a single weekend. He has run 107 ultra’s in the last 11 years, and most of them fast - his Marathon PR is 2:17:49. And he just completed the Israel National Trail - 1,016km in 10 days, 16 hours, 36 minutes. “I’ve been inspired by this FKT movement … I think there’s freedom with it … and there’s so much opportunity to engage the community.” The “INT” runs South-North, crossing the entire country of Israel, and is modeled after the Appalachian Trail. Mike was tracked on this website, and offered great insights during our discussion: “That’s the power of these things … they bring you to your limits, and that’s what I was looking for.”

It turns out that by taking the longer commuter rail train into the city I can get some writing done in the morning and in the afternoon.  As an added benefit it’s about a mile walk from North Station to my office.  This is a nice add of a brisk 15-20 minute city walk past Government Center, the Old North Church and Fanueil Hall to start and end my day.  I could take the subway but it’s a nasty crowded ride that would take 15 minutes anyhow. The net result is that I have a nice, long and very special race report from the Baystate Marathon for you.  It’s north of 5,000 words.  I’ll see how it fits, but it’s going to take up most of this show and I’ll be brief.  My training is good.  My next events are the local Thanksgiving 5K and the Mill Cities Relay.  It looks like Frank, Brian and I are going to be on a team.  That means I probably won’t be the guy running the 10 mile leg.  I’ll get one of the shorter legs which are 5 -6 miles.  Hopefully I won’t be relegated to the 2.5 mile leg.  … Yesterday was my birthday.  I turned, well I turned older.  I jumped an age group.  I took advantage of the time change and got the 5:30 train into the city.  I ran down to the river and knocked out a set of 5 X 7 minute intervals at a hard effort with 2 minute rests.  The speed work averaged around a 7 minute mile.  Which is neither here nor there, as they say.  I could compare that to my Marathon PR pace of 7:08’s and be sad about those slow loss of ability.  I choose not to.  I see it as a gift.  I see just being able to breath the bright morning air into my lungs and push the morning blood through my healthy heart as a gift. And to be able to do it at a pretty good pace and effort is a bonus.  That’s a gift to me on my birthday. I also got some attention from the people who love me, and that’s a gift, to be part of someone’s life and to know you are loved.  And I got messages from c couple hundred of you my friends on the ever-efficient Facebook.  (There’s some ironic, snarky comment about robot overlords and birthdays here but I’m going to take the high road.) Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Section one – BayState Marathon – Part one - Voices of reason – the conversation Jonathan Lieberman My Story: During my residency I was 241 pounds, miserable, and knew something had to be done about my health. So I started slow and short, and revisited my past love for distance running and marathons. Eventually I was turned on to Ironman and found my new love! Teaching myself to swim in the hospital pool and riding a folding bike to work each day, I applied by lottery for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. On my 39th birthday, I was selected for and ultimately finished this race…having also completed my first Ironman in Lake Placid just 10 weeks earlier. Consequently, in 2012 I was honored to be chosen for the Runner’s World photo shoot issue (video). Training and competing - with *myself* - is my ultimate passion. It has enabled me to face and conquer life’s toughest challenges. Ironman has taught me that it doesn’t matter what you think, how you feel, or what you say in life - only what you *do*. I live this motto for my children. Section two – BayState Marathon- Part two - Outro Ok my friends you have trained hard a raced smart to the end of Episode 4-376 of the RunRunLive Podcast.  Time to hang that medal on the rack and recover a bit.  This train into the city takes about an hour.  A lot of people sleep.  Supposedly there is internet access of a sort but I can never make it work.  This is the express train but it’s running slower this morning.  We don’t have real trains like Tokyo or London.  Ours are slow and barely keeping their heads above water. I took the early train yesterday and it’s a funny crowd.  Those commuters all know each other. It’s like a family reunion of bureaucrats, slightly rumpled career office workers in comfortable shoes.  They chat away like a sewing circle.  Thank Steve Jobs for headphones.  Did you se Shalane won the New York City Marathon!  That is amazing.  Amazing.  I have a funny story about the New York City marathon from my commuting experience.  You folks may remember that I ran the NYC marathon in 2014 as a sponsored athlete with ASICS.  One of the amazing things that has happened to me through RunRunLive.  I know, I still can’t believe it either.  Why would anyone sponsor a journeyman marathoner like me?  Well they apparently mistook ‘internet famous’ for actually famous and sponsored me.  They gave me so much stuff.  If you look at my current Facebook profile picture you’ll see the 3D statuette they created of me that sits on the mantle in my living room where they made me look like Will Weaton with a full head of hair.  One of my favorite stories is how I ended up on the front page of the Wall Street journal. True story.  But, I’m still working my way through all the schwag they gave me as a sponsored athlete.  And since I’ve been commuting into the city I have been wearing the NYC jacket and carrying the NYC backpack for my gear.  I was on the red line train last week heading out of the city and the guy across from me says, “Man you have all the gear!”  I looked up from my book and said “What?” “The New York City Marathon; you have all the gear.” You see, he was running the NYC marathon that weekend, his first, and I just happened to stumble into his awareness zone.  You know what I mean.  It’s like when you buy a new thing and then start noticing that new thing everywhere. So I said “Yeah, I ran it in 2014.”  And we struck up a conversation.  I did my best to fill him in on the overwhelming monstrosity that is the NYC Marathon.  At some point I said, “I was sponsored by Asics, because I’m internet famous, which isn’t actually famous…” (I know I tell the same jokes over and over and over) And I could see the recognition dawning in his eyes.  “RunRunLive!” he said, as both a statement and a question.  And I, proud and peacocky now stood to shake his hand.  So, Chris, if you’re out there.  That was fun for me.  Thanks for making my day.  And, to drag out the tired vehicle, occasionally, I do indeed ,see you out there. Consequently, in 2012 I was honored to be chosen for the Runner's World photo shoot issue (video). Training and competing - with *myself* - is my ultimate passion. It has enabled me to face and conquer life's toughest challenges. Ironman has taught me that it doesn't matter what you think, how you feel, or what you say in life - only what you *do*. This is the express train but it's running slower this morning.  We don't have real trains like Tokyo or London.  Ours are slow and barely keeping their heads above water. I took the early train yesterday and it's a funny crowd.  Those commuters all know each other. It's like a family reunion of bureaucrats, slightly rumpled career office workers in comfortable shoes. I know, I still can't believe it either.  Why would anyone sponsor a journeyman marathoner like me?  Well they apparently mistook ‘internet famous' for actually famous and sponsored me.  They gave me so much stuff.  If you look at my current Facebook profile picture you'll see the 3D statuette they created of me that sits on the mantle in my living room where they made me look like Will Weaton with a full head of hair.  One of my favorite stories is how I ended up on the front page of the Wall Street journal. True story.  But, I'm still working my way through all the schwag they gave me as a sponsored athlete.  And since I've been commuting into the city I have been wearing the NYC jacket and carrying the NYC backpack for my gear. It's like when you buy a new thing and then start noticing that new thing everywhere. So I said “Yeah, I ran it in 2014.”  And we struck up a conversation.  I did my best to fill him in on the overwhelming monstrosity that is the NYC Marathon.  At some point I said, “I was sponsored by Asics, because I'm internet famous, which isn't actually famous…” (I know I tell the same jokes over and over and over) And I could see the recognition dawning in his eyes.  “RunRunLive!” he said, as both a statement and a question.  And I, proud and peacocky now stood to shake his hand.  So, Chris, if you're out there.  That was fun for me.  Thanks for making my day.  And, to drag out the tired vehicle, occasionally, I do indeed ,see you out there. “Sometimes the mind during a marathon will start drifting to other competitors and external situations, when really, you need to be focusing on holding your form and a relaxed state.” * Ask the Yogi Runners is a series on Running On Om hosted by Julia Hanlon and Susie Stephen. In this episode, Susie and Julia discuss their recent marathon experiences. In part one, Julia recounts her journey guiding Lisa, a visually impaired runner, in the recent Boston Marathon. Susie explores how she incorporated yoga practices in her preparation and race plan for the Eugene Marathon, including reciting mantra, goal setting, and running without a Garmin watch. They also answer questions on how to use yoga to create hip and spinal mobility in runners. In part two, just hours after crossing the finish line, Susie recaps her experience running the Eugene Marathon and how her yoga practices were put to the test. * We would love to answer your yoga and running related questions, email us at asktheyogirunners@gmail.com!

Mi Amigos.  I told you that early in my career I did a couple projects in Chihuahua Mexico, right?  That was before it got a bit dicey with the los drugos down there.  More innocent times.  So we made it to February!  Old Man Winter has shown up with a vengeance up here in New England.  It’s ok, I like winter.  Or at least I can deal with it when it’s really only a couple months out of the year.   That’s one of the joys of living here is that you get 4 real seasons, but not enough of each to make them annoying.  Makes us flexible and tough.   Since we last talked it’s been snowing almost every other day.  Last weekend we got a cool 2-day blizzard that dumped 3 feet of snow.  Since it was cold too, zero degrees Fahrenheit, it was that fluffy snow that is great for winter sports and fairly easy to move, but we got a lot of it.  It’s over Buddy’s head and he’s confined to a short path in the front yard.  He’s got cabin fever and is quite bothersome.  I took him for a walk during the blizzard but it was over his head and up to my thighs so we could only break trail for a couple hundred feet before we had to turn around.  I’ve been having to get most of my runs in on the treadmill which is not optimal.  After we last talked I ran the Derry 16 miler and felt pretty good.  The weather was good at just around freezing.  I took it super easy and ran/walked the big hills then closed it nicely in the last 5k.  I ended up running around 2:17 and felt pretty strong.  That capped a 53 mile week for me on 4 runs.  The following weekend I went out for a 3 hour easy run.  I took it super easy and did loops around my house.  I felt like I could keep going at the end so my base is good and strong.  It’s a bit dismal with the snow and cold and darkness but you know how it is; the only way out is forward.   Besides, the cold weather slows the zombies down.   Thanks to those of you who threw me some donations for my Team Hoyt campaign for Running the Boston Marathon this year – I appreciate it.   Those of you who haven’t, now’s a good time.  I still need your help.  I’m only ¼ way to my goal.  Come on now, I don’t ask you folks to buy t-shirts, I don’t give a rat’s ass if you give me a review on iTunes or vote for me in whatever podcast awards are the thing of the day.  This isn’t a commercial venture for me, it’s a creative hobby.  So, cough up the cabbage and we’ll call it even…quid pro quo Clarice…quid pro quo. Today we have a most excellent show for you.  I interview SherAnne Nelson who is the captain of a team that is going to take on the Patagonia Expedition Race next year which is a super hairy race in South America.  It’s a run-bike-paddle-mountain climbing survival type thing.  Hard core.   I feel like I could have done a better job with SheriAnne. I feel like I should have asked, “Are you nuts? Leavingyoru comfy life and family for this misadventure? How do you feel about that?“ but I didn’t.   Even with my love of a good adventure, I’d be terrified.  I haven’t been traveling and that always makes me a little itchy.  But I’m getting a lot done, in between angsty episodes of over eating and over sleeping...But the days are getting longer and I’m hitting the road next week.  In section one I wrote a bit of a tongue in cheek piece about some of the myths surrounding marathon running that we have to watch out for.  In section two we’ll talk about the philosophy of time.  So, keep on shoveling, but don’t shovel straight lines because as we all know evil spirits love straight lines and will follow them right to your door.  Shovel crooked lines.  It will confuse the walking dead too.  On with the Show!
