Her favorite place to be stationed was Tegucigalpa, Honduras. In her free time, you'll catch her on the trails with her Frenchie, Charlie, exploring a new city or dancing in the aisles at the grocery store to some music.----John Burns is an Army Combat Veteran who survived an IED attack while deployed to Baghdad, Iraq. A last minute decision as a leader to change seats assignments changed everything for him, making him the lone survivor in his vehicle and leaving him with debilitating injuries. His survivor's guilt was gripping and began a 19-year journey of struggle. Lack of sleep, balance issues, severe PTS made it hard for John to exist. He turned to the VA who prescribed him a cocktail of medicines. Then came the pandemic…forced isolation and loneliness escalated John's symptoms. He spent days in the dark, with very little interaction. John's wife Cheryl, desperate for answers and help, started researching places for him to get care. They found Avalon who connected them with the University of Florida Haley Brain Wellness Program. John's class was one of the biggest cohorts to date. He reluctantly attended, but by the 3rd day, he knew things were going to be different. After 3 weeks of care, everything changed and he found hope againCheryl says she got her husband back. John said he got his life back. And he gained community, something he missed from his days serving. Today, John is thriving. Finally taking that Greek vacation he dreamed of. Finally being the grandpa he hoped he'd become. Finally being himself. A life renewed and hope restoredIn John and Cheryl's own words: “We found Avalon Action Alliance when we needed it most. We had lost hope in the way John was being treated and didn't know where else to go after years of searching for help. Everything changed when we were connected to the team at UF Health. We're finally living the life we envisioned – full of love and hope once again. Avalon's care is life-changing, and we'll be forever grateful for the support we received from them.”Links Mentioned in this Episode Avalon Action Alliance Web SiteAlliance Partner LocationsPsychArmor Resource of the WeekPsychArmor  Brain Health & Wellness Learning Series - Traumatic Brain Injury. Here's a shocking reality many people aren't aware of. Being a real estate professional ranks among the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America. 30,000 agents were victims of violent crimes in the past year.  Every day, real estate agents put themselves at risk while performing what should be a routine job—showing properties, meeting clients, and navigating unfamiliar neighborhoods.  The statistics reveal that agents face high incidents of harassment, threats, and even violence simply for doing their jobs. It's a sobering thought that can make anyone hesitant to step out into the field. But what if there was a way to enhance your safety and confidence? What if there was a way to take control of your safety? In this episode, I'm joined by Vanessa Martin, co-founder of Tether RE, an innovative real estate agent safety platform unlike any other. We'll discuss how Tether RE enhances agent safety, explore its unique features, and highlight the significant impact it can have on the industry.   Crime isn't going to go away so we need to think about safety. -Vanessa Martin   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -The suburban myth The belief that rural and suburban areas are safer is often a myth, as isolation and slower emergency responses can pose hidden risks. Why do people associate these areas with greater safety despite these dangers?   -Precaution when showing properties There are many potential risks that go unrecognized when it comes to showing properties as a realtor. What are some of these risks and how can we look out for them?   -Crime isn't going to go away Crime is on the rise and is not going to go away. How do we prepare ourselves to combat it? What measures need to be put in place?   Guest Bio Vanessa Martin is the Co-Founder of Tether RE: a comprehensive real estate platform that seamlessly integrates essential safety tools with advanced technology and efficiency features, ensuring agents have everything they need for their daily tasks. Arms Around America

Recorded live inside UCLA's Royce Hall, the audio drama at the center of this episode takes place in southern California the immediate aftermath of the 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde TX. Tiffany struggles to balance the need to protect her young children with the urgency of finishing her doctoral dissertation, which is itself related to school shootings. After the performance, actors Natalie Camunas and Sola Bamis are joined by guests Marine Corps veteran Tess Banko and Army veteran Robert Ham to discuss the implications, for parents and veterans in particular, of school shootings becoming commonplace. "Tiffany" is based on the oral history of retired Air Force Captain Jessica Huerta. Jessica, who is also a PhD student in Sociology, joins the discussion as well. The conversation unearths provocative questions about cultures of hyper-masculinity, and the need to balance our freedoms and responsibilities regarding guns. Often she was the only woman in airfield-communications teams, among leaders in security forces, as the wing equal opportunity adviser, and as a public affairs officer. As a citizen-airman, a sociology doctoral candidate at UCLA, and a parent, she became aware of the discrimination fathers face when they seek deep emotional connections with their families and greater involvement in childcare. Jessica believes research to demonstrate the strategies fathers use to defy rigid gender rules could greatly improve the lives of men, their partners and their children across our military, veteran and civilian communities.   Tess Barragan Banko, MSW/MPA, a Marine Corps veteran, serves as the U.S.VETS West Los Angeles project director and The Veterans Collective community development director. A survivor of post-traumatic stress disorder and military sexual trauma, Banko deeply identifies with fellow veterans and families on their paths to recovery, wellness and empowerment, and is honored to serve the community on behalf of her military and veteran sisters, brothers and their families.    Robert Ham is a 4x Emmy winning director/writer, a decorated Army Combat Veteran and an alumni of the USC School of Cinematic Arts MFA program. Show SummaryOn this episode, we feature a conversation with Army Combat Veteran and Peer Support Leader with the Wounded Warrior Project, Michael Carasquillo, as we discuss his experience with Wounded Warrior Project Peer Support Groups, small, warrior-led support groups that connect veterans with each other in their communities. About Today's GuestOn September 9, 2005, Michael Carrasquillo jumped to the ground from a hovering helicopter in Afghanistan, looking to help his unit capture a high- value Al Qaeda official. But when his team was ambushed and one of his soldiers was injured, Michael ran to help — despite not having anywhere to hide from incoming bullets. He was shot five times and would spend the next two years in hospitals learning how to walk and use his hands again.Unfortunately, his injuries were so severe that 100 percent of his medical care was geared toward physical healing. He was never tested for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or traumatic brain injury (TBI).It was more than a year after Michael was medically retired that he and his wife realized something was very wrong.“Everything seemed to be alright at first,” says Michael. “But I started to isolate and get really depressed. I had suicidal thoughts, and I started to do behaviors that, in my head, were irrational.”Michael was on a dark downward spiral until he connected with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP).“It started out as just a place for me to meet and talk to other warriors. At the time it's a feeling of, ‘I'm the only one going through this, I don't want people to see me like this.' It's a freeing experience to just talk. Veteran engagement was the gateway to bigger and better things.”Michael started taking advantage of the free programs and services WWP provides. Warriors to Work helped him craft a resume and land a job he loves with the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA).Not only has Michael found a civilian career through WWP, he has also found a renewed purpose, helping other veterans in their transitions. Michael serves as a peer mentor to other veterans in different stages of their recoveries — bringing veterans together to help one another heal.“In my life now, I feel like I'm in a very blessed position, and what I'd like to do is give back as much as I can. WWP helped me become the best possible version of myself.” Links Mentioned In This EpisodeWounded Warrior Project Web SiteWounded Warrior Project ProgramsWounded Warrior Project Veteran Peer Support GroupsPsychArmor Resource of the WeekThis week's PsychArmor resource of the week is the Peer Leader Training Series, a 10-part series powered by PsychArmor, in partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project, which will explore the role of Peer Leaders in supporting their fellow Veterans. “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”  – Mother Teresa I am excited to welcome #FITFAM to the T&T mic, Aaron Brill and Manny Menendez. I have trained for years with Aaron and was excited to learn that he was bringing CrossFit in a unique way to his then day job, as a police officer. Arron was inspired by an experience through a friend that experienced deep changes because of the fitness modality- so he decided to introduce CrossFit and its principles to the other “insiders” and Lions' Pride Fitness was born. Lions' Pride Fitness is a CrossFit Community for those in or returning from incarceration. With over 5 years of experience in building CrossFit programs inside prison, they wanted to continue that community success outside. Arron was lucky enough to cross paths with Army Combat Veteran, Manny Menendez, who he brought on board to help guide the Lions' Pride Fitness process. Arron and Manny share their passion for fitness, community, and questioning a better way regarding re-entrance into mainstream society- regardless of where you are coming from. We all know antiquated systems need change, but what a refreshing approach to take things into your own hands and contribute where you can. This is a great convo about shifting perspectives and providing space for growth and change. What a world we would have if we all could do more of that!   Highlights: CrossFit and incarceration. Community, commitment, and working towards something larger. Perspective and opportunity. Systems and approach. Mindset of what we CAN do. Viewing people up close to lose your own bias. Humanizing leadership and meeting people where they are at. Taking existing skills and applying them to a legal game. Opportunity, hope, and evolution.   Aaron Brill Aaron is 25-year veteran of law enforcement (retired Feb '21), with the last 22 on Denver PD. Aaron spent 12 years as a patrol cop,  and 8 as an Academy Instructor where he found and fell in love with CrossFit, and 5 years as a patrol sergeant. He is a Co-founder of two non-profits aimed at bringing the whole person wellness of CrossFit to the justice system involved population. He is a proud husband of an amazing woman and Dad of two littles (6 year old daughter and 4 year old son).   Manny Menendez SSG, USA(Ret.) B.A.S. CF-L1 Lead Program Coordinator Veterans Healing Veterans from The Inside Out My name is Manny Menendez I am a US Army Combat Veteran.  After multiple deployments and injuries, I was medically retired from the service in 2013. I went on to earn my bachelor's degree after the service. Shortly thereafter I found myself incarcerated at Sterling Correctional Facility; this is where I found CrossFit.  Aaron at the time was the president of the CrossFit program inside the prison and we helped establish/build the program at sterling.  To this day I'm thankful for the work Aaron has done behind the wall and paving the way for CrossFit to be a part of that unique environment.  Thanks to his work I was able to earn my CF-L1 behind bars.  CrossFit has helped me make some foundational changes in my life and given me that structure, discipline, Comradery that I fell far away from during my transition out of the service.  Now I am very passionate about helping those in prison and reentering the community through CrossFit and working out.  I currently work as the lead program coordinator for veterans healing veterans, we are the largest organization advocating for the almost 200,000 justice involved veterans. We run a curriculum, which is based on narration therapy where we go in and help our nations forgot about hero's process some of their trauma so they are not finding themselves in these same positions.  I have a very unique journey, but am truly blessed to have gone through it all, because now I have found my purpose/life's work and that is invaluable to me.  Thank you for your time.  I look forward to the future and continuing this amazing work we are doing, truly impacting lives and making better human beings.    Lions' Pride Fitness: Mission: We exist to bring the full person wellness of CrossFit combined with peer and community mentorship to the Justice System Involved (JSI) population. Vision: We see a world where the community supports people in the ‘justice system involved' population and offer their time, talents and treasures in the success of those people. Training Expertise: With years of success and experience in this field, we can help bring the components of a successful program to your area. We have refined the process through in person application and have seen first-hand what works and what doesn't. Where we apply CrossFit: We see 3 areas in the justice system to apply CrossFit to help break the cycle: Courts, Corrections, Reintegration including probation/parole. We apply what we've seen work into the unique needs of each. ·         Courts: Diversion into CrossFit Community Centers and Affiliates as part of a comprehensive alternative to jail/prison ·         Corrections: We have a proven model for peer lead, Staff and community supported CrossFit Behind Bar(bell)s ·         Reintegration: Access to a global network of CrossFit Affiliates and a developing mentor support system https://lionspridefitness.org/   Connect with T&T: IG: @TurmericTequila Facebook: @TurmericAndTequila TikTok: @TurmericTequila Website: www.TurmericAndTequila.com   Host: Kristen Olson IG: @Madonnashero Website: www.KOAlliance.com

This week's Urban Valor episode features Army combat veteran Logan Joyce. Logan grew up in Orange County, CA. Growing up, he got into trouble with the law and spent a little time in jail. Logan was an avid skater, but people in his life told him that skating wasn't a wise decision to pursue for his career. His older brothers inspired him to join the military. Logan became a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Specialist. He ended up on a combat deployment to Iraq attached to an Infantry unit and did a tour in South Korea. Like many veterans, Logan struggled to transition out of the military but eventually worked his way out of the suck and became a pro skater.  Urban Valor is a platform for Veterans to share their voice, cement their stories in history, and discuss change or issues that they feel could save lives and/or improve military mental health and military transition. To continue to support and learn more about Logan, check out our Linktree with links to his websites and charity, Six Feet Above, where you can support Veterans through Skateboarding!Click Here: https://linktr.ee/urbanvalortv
