John Maytham speaks to Mike Finch, editor of Runner’s World, about the record-breaking prize purse on offer at the 2026 Comrades Marathon. They discuss the financial incentives available to elite runners, the possibility of new records on the shortened Up Run route, and what spectators can expect from one of the most competitive editions of the race in recent years. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”. Evan Jager: An Olympic medallist, a Swedish startup and the super supplement that's sweeping endurance sport

Weeks after retiring from one of the greatest professional running careers in a generation, Evan Jager found himself inside a Swedish lab testing a supplement made from broccoli sprouts. The results of those lab tests caught his attention, and before the ink was dry on his retirement letter to the sport of distance running, the Olympic silver medallist and American record holder was right back in the world of high performance.  But while he'd spent a pro career focused on running as fast as possible, this new chapter would be all about helping other athletes reach their full potential, as he became head of athlete relations for Nomio, the Swedish company behind the broccoli-powered super supplement. Today on The Shakeout Podcast, Evan joins us to talk about how a move to Sweden set the stage for an improbable post-career pivot, what the transition to life after pro running has looked like and what it was about that first experience with a shot of broccoli juice that had him diving back into the heart of high performance sport just as quickly as he'd left. Most runners focus on training mileage, but the real performance breakthrough happens in the days before the race. Recovery is not a passive process. It is an active, intentional strategy that determines how your body adapts, stores energy, and performs under pressure. In the lead-up to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, understanding how to taper correctly, fuel effectively, and manage your nervous system can be the difference between hitting the wall and finishing strong. This is the phase where smart runners separate themselves from the rest. Fitness presenter and mental fitness coach Liezel van der Westhuizen joins Africa Melane to unpack the critical role of recovery before race day. With insights grounded in endurance training, stress physiology, and real-world racing experience, she explains how to manage taper anxiety, optimise sleep, and avoid common mistakes that leave runners fatigued before they even start. If you want to feel prepared, powerful, and mentally sharp on race day, this is the guidance you cannot afford to miss.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Georgina Smith last spoke to Lester Kiewit on 15 January, the Relay Mermaids were on standby, waiting for a narrow weather window to attempt their 72 kilometre open ocean swim from Fish Hoek around Cape Point to Hout Bay. After repeated delays due to unfavourable winds and swell, the team finally launched this past weekend and completed the full distance in an unratified time of 23 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds. Smith joined Lester again to reflect on the physical and mental endurance required to push through icy Atlantic waters in only costumes, caps and goggles, rotating alongside Shoneé Cornelissen, Katherine Persson and Eva Dirksen through the night. The near 24 hour finish follows weeks of careful weather monitoring, with the swim dedicated to raising funds for the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund in support of 13 year old Leandro Jantjies, the organisation’s youngest recipient, who now requires lifelong care following a catastrophic rugby injury. Dr. Laursen has been at the forefront of endurance research, particularly in exploring the evolving role of carbohydrates in fueling elite and age-group athletes. Together, they dive into the science and practical application of high-carbohydrate intake during endurance events, including the evidence behind consuming up to 120 grams per hour, how this practice became a gold standard for elites, and the factors that influence an athlete's ability to efficiently utilize such large amounts.Dr. Laursen sheds light on the physiological impacts of extreme carbohydrate fueling, addressing its potential benefits, limits, and risks, including GI distress, inflammation, and even its connection to overtraining or heart health in some cases. He shares insights into why age-group athletes often struggle when emulating elite practices and offers practical strategies for aligning carbohydrate intake with individual needs and training loads.Mikki and Dr. Laursen also discuss the misconceptions around low-carb approaches in endurance sports, hybrid fueling strategies that combine low- and high-carb periods, and the importance of balancing performance with long-term health. With his years of coaching and research, Dr. Laursen shares invaluable advice for endurance athletes looking to optimize their fueling strategies, whether they're chasing personal bests or aiming for sustainable performance. Let's discuss business endurance and its impact on your company. Business endurance refers to the ability to weather storms, adapt to changing environments, and maintain consistent growth.   According to a report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), 76% of small business owners plan to exit their businesses within the next decade. The primary reasons for their departure are:   - **Retirement:** 75% of business owners cite retirement as their reason for leaving. - **Burnout:** 22% of business owners feel burned out. - **Stepping back:** 21% of business owners want to reduce their responsibilities as owners.   However, only 9% of business owners have a formal succession plan in place.   Steven Pivnik is a sought-after keynote speaker, best-selling author, and business advisor, known for his expertise in the Information Technology sector. He grew his last company, Binary Tree, to over 200 employees across twelve countries before successfully selling it to a $4 billion competitor, Quest Software. When he's not delivering keynote speeches or climbing one of the seven summits, Steven advises founders and entrepreneurs looking to navigate similar growth and exit strategies.   With a diverse background in business and endurance sports, Steven offers a unique and engaging perspective on overcoming challenges and achieving remarkable success. For her, running is freedom - especially during those golden-hour runs along the water. This intrinsic joy, she believes, has fueled her incredible progress and achievements.Earlier this year, Olivia became pregnant. Determined to maintain her routine, sense of identity, and well-being, she continued training through this transition. And just a few weeks after giving birth, she returned to competition, redefining what it means to balance the roles of mother, athlete, and professional - an experience she describes as truly surreal. She also discusses how her perspective on competition has shifted with her evolving responsibilities, the gratitude for her body's strength, the empowerment she's found, and her lessons in never underestimating what our bodies are capable of.

Today, I am joined by Ali Hollest, a holistic personal and professional development coach, podcaster, triathlon coach, and athlete. Committed to advocating a holistic approach to wellness, Ali aims to inspire both physical and psychological performance. In this episode, we discuss how sports participation extends far beyond physical achievements. Rather, it enriches our psychological well-being, fosters growth, personal development, and cultivates heightened self-awareness.We discuss the therapeutic benefits of running, emphasising the importance of embracing the process over merely aiming to cross finish lines or fixating on statistics. Training should be fun, playful, an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and connect with like minded others - embedded sustainability into your lifestyle - allowing for longevity, and overall fulfilment. A highlight of our talk is Ali's recounting of the "Snowdon 6 Ways Challenge," an incredible endurance event he designed to honour the memory of his friend, Milo. He details this gruelling challenge, covering 80km and over 5200m of ascent, with limited rest between legs. Supported by a team of close friends and an incredible crew, This challenge not only showcased human resilience but also the power of community and support, capturing the essence of what Ali advocates.More about Ali: "To cut a colourful story short, I have felt lost, I have thrived, I have grieved, I have made more than my fair share of mistakes.  I have been in some incredibly low lows yet also reached some brilliant high highs.  My life is in no way perfect and I don't believe it ever will be.  However I am happy in the knowledge that I live every day the best that I can, drawing on all my past and present experience. From a young age sport has always been a constant in my life, whether playing, coaching or supporting.  I believe there is so much sport can give us, not just the physical and physiological benefits.  Sport challenges us, makes us problem solve, learn the benefits and growth from winning and losing.  It enables us to create relationships that stretch far beyond the sporting arena.  My employment history has been, well, let's say varied.  From the early years of hospitality across Europe, to bushcraft and survival skills, to setting up and running my businesses I feel I have learnt a heck of a lot along the way.  You know what? I've set up businesses that have thrived.  I've also set up businesses that really haven't!  It's all part of the jigsaw puzzle that will keep on needing to be taken apart and built back up again!"Find Ali:www.triswimcoaching.com@triswimcoaching@ali_hollest@evolve_pod

Interest is growing about the potential to use this technology in sports like CrossFit in order to better monitor intensity, individualize training and educate athletes. In this conversation, I talk with Sebastian, Damien and Assaf about the potential utility of Moxy Monitor for CrossFit training and coaching. I begin with a QUICK refresher on Moxy theory and practice. If you want something less rushed, watch this :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9glY_uokKU. We then delve into how to test conditioning with Moxy, how to interpret the results, how to train with Moxy Monitor in a CrossFit context (for both specific and general testing) as well as respiratory training and coaching philosophy. This was a very fun exchange! I hope to have more of this kind in the future. If you agree, please leave a comment below to support the channel!
