How many people do you know who were inducted into TEN - yeah, you heard it - TEN different Halls of Fame?! How many coaches do you know who were the National Coach of the Year 8 times? Or won 6 National Championships? Coached the ONLY undefeated team in NCAA Division 1 Golf history? Is the PAC 12 Conference Coach of THE CENTURY?!?! And the list goes on. Well, you're about to meet her. Coach Linda Vollstedt is her name and I sat down recently with her to have an epic conversation during which she was remarkably generous with sharing her secrets to extreme success. And you might be surprised by some of the methodologies that she relied upon to win so damn much. LOVE is one of them. LOVE. And she preaches that unapologetically. When someone says to her, "Oh you used 'soft skills'?" she just points to the trophy case and says, "If those are soft, I guess." This week we're chatting with Reggie Morris, the boy's basketball coach at Raytown South High School, and one of this year's Blue KC Coaches with Character honorees. What is the Blue KC Coaches with Character program? Since 2017, CYITML has partnered with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas City and the Kansas City Royals for a program called Coaches with Character. Each year we recognize six coaches who are making Kansas City a better place. This year we are featuring the coaches on this podcast, because, who knows better about leadership, building teams, team chemistry and so on than successful high school coaches?Reggie Morris, the boys' basketball coach at Raytown South High School, was our second Coaches with Character recipient this year, back in May.Morris is starting his third year at Raytown South after a successful stint as the coach at Grandview High School, where his teams won back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. Morris' resume includes being selected as KC Metro Basketball Coach of the Year twice, the Conference Coach of the Year award winner three times, from 2017-2019, and the District Coach of the Year for four consecutive years from 2017-2020.Ultimately, though, Morris is about what happens away from basketball for the young men he coaches. Culture is huge for Morris. And his goal, like it is with our C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program, is to prepare his players, as well as other students with whom he comes in contact at Raytown South, for their next stage in life.Morris talks about all of that, defines COMPASSION, takes a swing at Pregame Batting Practice, and much more. Of all the motivational buzzwords out there, the term ‘character' is thrown around a lot. Hiring managers looking for people with ‘high character,' managers say that random exercises ‘build character,' so on and so forth. But what does character actually look like? What does it mean? Coach Melissa Kutcher knows the importance of character. It's how she led the University of Denver Women's Gymnastics team to 22 consecutive NCAA finals appearances, 2 NCAA individual championships, the 2021 Big 12 Championship, and 5 team NCAA appearances. Since her appointment to head coach at University of Denver's Women's Gymnastics in 1998 she's been awarded the 2019 National Coach of the Year Award, a 2x Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, 2002s WGC's Coach of the Year, and a 6x recipient of the North Central Region Coach of the Year. Every year Coach Kutcher is tasked with creating a high performing team while constantly letting go of one batch of her star athletes, while also welcoming a brand new class of student athletes. She gets the importance of building a strong culture, and the importance of recruiting people who can develop character. In a time where the members of your workforce can fluctuate more rapidly than ever, knowing how to develop a winning culture amongst the ups and downs of recruiting and losing people is an invaluable skill, one that Coach Kutcher has mastered during her tenure at University of Denver. This is another episode you won't want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

Our Great Coach on this episode is Jackie Carson. Jackie Carson is the Head Coach of the Furman University Womens Basketball team. She also played there as a student athlete, and still hold the conference record for most free throws made. In 1999 she was honored as Furman's Female Athlete of the Year and in 2009 she became on the third player in the programs history to have their jersey retired. She started her coaching career in 2003, progressing through Assistant Coaching Positions at Bucknell and Madison which included postseason appearances at the 2007 and 2010 NCAA tournaments. In 2010, she returned to Furman as the 9th Head Coach in the college's history. In her 11 seasons leading the team they have earned four postseason berths and 2 Women's National Invitational Tournament appearances. In 2014 she was awarded Conference Coach of the Year. Jackie is a coach with an Infectious energy that inspires you to have the confidence to, in her words, walk into the room or the gym knowing you are going to win. Building this confidence in her players is a key part of what she strives to achieve as a coach. After the interview, the keys parts I shared with my own family around the dinner table were, How she believes that as a woman, you have to be better than the male that's going for the same job, and importantly show why you're better. And explaining this is not something you should shy away from, in fact she says you should demand what you want in the future. How some of the things you say in your head to yourself, you would never say out loud to anyone else. And that the best way to deal with negative self-talk is to talk to someone else about how you are thinking, and through that, talk yourself into the tasks that are causing you to doubt. And wanting to leave a legacy, where people learn that you can do things the right way, you can be a mom that works, a black female that is successful and beats the odds, you can do whatever it is that people say that you can't do. As a father of 2 daughters, I found this interview educational and inspiring and I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did.
