Jodie Niznik Kay Daigle Jodie Niznik and Kay Daigle discuss exploring spiritual practices beyond prayer and Bible study to help us walk with God. If you feel your spiritual life has become simply something to check off on a to-do list, exploring a spiritual practice that is new to you may be the key to revitalizing your soul. I'm Kay Daigle of Beyond Ordinary Women Ministries. Welcome to our podcast and video. Our special guest today is Jodie Niznik. Welcome Jodie. Jodie >> Thanks, Kay. So always good to be with you. Kay >> And we always love it when you come on here. We've had some great conversations and I'll get into some of those at the end so that people know more about them. Today we're going to talk about spiritual disciplines. And Jodie, I need to tell you a little bit more about her before we get into our conversation. Jodie is an author, a Bible teacher. She desires to help people make space for God in their lives. And she has a Scripture meditation podcast, which is fabulous, and it's called So Much More. And where can I get to that, Jodie? Jodie >> Yeah, if you go to my website, which is jodieniznik.com, there are links there, but it's also on any podcast platform. So wherever you listen to podcasts, you can Google so much more scripture meditation and you'll find it. Kay >> All right. Thanks for letting us know yeah. Well, as we start talking about spiritual disciplines, I just wanted to say from the from the get go that growing up in the church, all I knew was I was supposed to pray. I supposed to read my Bible, and I was supposed to give money. So I definitely came a long way. And I'm sure that there are people out there that don't even know what spiritual disciplines are. So let's sort of start from the beginning. How would you define them? Just tell us about them. Jodie >> Yeah, I love that you started with the basic spiritual disciplines that we know prayer, Bible study, giving to the church. Those are the practices that we know. But spiritual disciplines are actually much bigger and they all come from what we see Jesus doing. So Jesus, when he invited us to be followers, he said, “Come follow me.” That's what he said to the original disciples. You all know that. And when we look at what he was actually inviting them to do, he was actually inviting them into a way of living. He was inviting them to do the things that he was doing so that they would become more like him. So spiritual practices are often called spiritual disciplines. Those two words are interchangeable. I like practices a little more than discipline because I think discipline, especially if we're breaking out of even kind of a legalistic background it feels a little harsher to us and not as invitational as a practice. Practice has a little bit more freedom in the word for me, but a spiritual practice is something we see Jesus doing, but with the intention that we are being formed to be more like him. Another thing I think is really important about spiritual practices is we're all being formed into something. We are all being formed intentionally and unintentionally, and some of the ways that we are unintentionally formed are the things that we do, the things that we read,

Julie and I first met years ago. We were on the same church staff. I believe your title was church Communications Director. Julie >> Yes. Good memory, Kay. It feels like a long time ago. Kay >> Yeah, I started thinking that was probably it. Julie has a whole list of churches where she has served and also helped with their leadership situation. In this episode, Jodie Niznik, host of So Much More, leads you in a guided meditation to help you find renewed strength and hope using Isaiah 40:28-31. The passage was originally meant to encourage God's people who were weary and wayward, and it also offers timeless truths and promises for us today. Here are 3 takeaways from this Meditation: Remember God's Everlasting Presence: Isaiah 40 reminds us that the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. These timeless truths remind us of God's unceasing care and understanding, strengthening our hope in Him. Renew Your Strength: We all encounter times in our lives when we feel weary and weak. Isaiah 40 teaches us that God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Through our hope in Him, our strength is renewed, allowing us to “soar on wings like eagles.” Rest in God's Understanding: God understands our weariness, weakness, and exhaustion even better than we do. In times of struggle, we can find solace in His knowing and loving presence, allowing His understanding to comfort and guide us.   You can find Jodie at http://www.jodieniznik.com/ Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @JodieGNiznik Download free sample chapters from my Bible studies here. Download your free Lectio Divina Journal here.   The full meditation text is as follows: Isaiah 40:28-31, NIV 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. In this episode, host Jodie Niznik interviews Dr. Michelle Bengtson, an esteemed clinical neuropsychologist, international speaker, and author of "The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out to God When Pain Overwhelms."  Here are 3 key takeaways from this inspiring conversation: 1️. Pain is a universal experience: Dr. Bengtson reminds us that pain is a great equalizer, and everyone will experience trials in life. Whether it's physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual pain, we all need support and compassion during these challenging times. 2️. Be present for the pain sufferer: Often, well-meaning friends may unintentionally invalidate someone's pain by offering advice or solutions. Instead, simply being present, acknowledging their suffering, and offering practical assistance can make a profound difference. Let's be a listening ear and a helping hand. 3️. Holding onto hope in difficult seasons: Even when it feels like God is not answering our prayers or working in our lives, we can find inspiration in the story of the woman who touched Jesus' garment. By holding onto faith and reminding ourselves of God's faithfulness and love, we can experience peace and freedom amidst our pain.   Here are a few timestamped highlights from our conversation: 02:59 What does a Neuropsychologist do? 08:51 Dr. Bengtson shares her struggle with depression and how finding healing became a powerful experience for Michelle. Initially shocked by her own battle with depression, she began taking the steps she would typically recommend to her patients - prioritizing rest, nutrition, exercise, therapy, and medication. However, these approaches proved insufficient in alleviating her depression. Michelle realized that she had been neglecting the spiritual aspect of her well-being and needed to address the spiritual roots of her disease. 12:02 Dr. Bengtson and Jodie discuss the meditation passage and how this woman, who had suffered for years, was some of the inspiration for her book. 18:03 Sometimes, God is more concerned about healing our hearts and relationship with Him, even in our pursuit of physical healing. God always knows what's best for us and never withholds anything good from us. 21:10 Dr. Bengtson shares how she has held onto her faith amidst chronic pain and suffering. 25:12 Dr. Bengtson shares how her time away from work helped her reframe her understanding of God's love for her. 30:28 How can we be present with friends and loved ones in pain? Dr. Bengtson gives this helpful advice: see, value, and care. Be present and avoid hurtful comments. 33:51 Some closing words or comfort for those who are struggling with chronic pain. Dr. Bengtson wants us to remember that Jesus understands your pain and suffering. Don't lose hope. You are not alone in your struggles. Even if you don't have someone in your life who can relate, remember that God understands. Jesus endured great suffering, and through his experiences, he can empathize with us.   Here's how you can connect with Dr. Michelle Bengtson: https://drmichellebengtson.com/ You can order her book here on Amazon Listen to her podcast, Your Hope Filled Perspective, here: https://drmichellebengtson.com/podcast/ Follow her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmichellebengtson/ Follow her on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrMichelleBengtson   You can find Jodie at http://www.jodieniznik.com/ Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @JodieGNiznik Download free sample chapters from my Bible studies here. Episode Summary:  Have you ever felt burned out from your ministry or calling? Are you a faith-filled believer of Jesus, and yet your spiritual walk has felt void of excitement? Do you approach your daily quiet time as a task to check off rather than a fresh encounter with a friend?  We're going to be talking about all of this in today's episode. Join me with Jodie Niznik for how to meditate on the word of God and the benefits of meditation. Quotables from the episode: I was leading a very busy life working “for” God and ignoring good boundaries and limits on my time and energy. This led me to a crisis point where I nearly left the ministry. Lectio Divina (Latin for sacred reading) is a slow reading of the Word where we invite the Spirit to help us notice what he wants us to notice and then have a conversation with him about whatever he shows us. Meditation is something we need to reclaim because it was God's idea in the first place! God is a good God even when things don't feel “good.” God knows exactly who he created you to be and exactly what you are going through. He has also created us to live full and abundant lives. If we are willing to create space for God in our lives, He will meet us there. No matter what you are going through right now, God wants to accompany you through it.   Scripture References: Psalm 1:1-3, NIV Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.  Ephesians 2:10, NIV  For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  Psalm 62: 1-2, NIV Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.    Recommended Resources:  Choose: A Study of Moses for a Life That Matters by Jodie Niznik Crossroads: A Study of Esther and Jonah for Boldly Responding to Your Call by Jodie Niznik Trust: A Study of Joseph for Persevering Through Life's Challenges by Jodie Niznik Journey: A Study of Peter for Stumbling Toward Jesus's Extravagant Grace by Jodie Niznik Galatians: Discovering Freedom in Christ Through Daily Practice by Sue Edwards and Jodie Niznik Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. Her calling and passion is to equip people to create space for God in their lives and take another step in their journey with Jesus. She does this through writing, teaching, and her Scripture meditation podcast, So Much More: Creating Space for God. Jodie has been married to Tim for over twenty-five years. They have two adult daughters, Taylor and Billie, and a very poorly trained Yorkie-poo. Jodie loves a great adventure, especially in the mountains, and so frequently laments that the Lord has called them to live in hot and flat Dallas. However, she does love the community around her, so this seems to make up for the lack of cool mountain air. She also loves a great cup of coffee, is a pencil snob, and during the pandemic discovered she had a green thumb. You will frequently find her in her office drinking said coffee, staring in awe at her growing plants, or journaling prayers with one of her favorite pencils.  Hosted By: Dr. Michelle Bengtson Audio Technical Support: Bryce Bengtson

My guest today is Jodie Niznik, a seminary-trained lover of God's Word who has served in vocational ministry for over twelve years. She helps people create space for God in their lives through her Scripture meditation podcast and equips them to take another step with Jesus through her Real People, Real Faith Bible studies and teaching. Jodie and I chat about Lectio Divina, a form of scripture meditation. But we know that meditation, the word and the practice gets a lot of push back in the church. So we chat about what exactly Lectio Divina includes, the good and the bad versions of meditation, and how we can all begin practicing this discipline of stillness even if you have never done anything like this before.Show NotesVerse by Verse Bible Study Verse by verse Bible study with Randy Duncan. Karen and Jodie discuss the intersection of faith and purpose. Jodie is a pastor by training, and author of Bible studies who hosts a podcast called 'So Much More: Creating Space for God'. She has since stepped away from formal church ministry positions and is now helping people create space for God through her podcast, writing, and other discipleship ministries. Karen shares that when her kids were young, her faith was shallow and she didn't think about being an intentional Christian witness. She was inspired by a woman in the Middle East with a bold and mighty faith, which she hungers to have too.Jodie and Karen also discuss how to cultivate a deeper relationship with God and how to share a faith worth sharing. In order to accomplish this, they both agree that slowing down is essential. Jodie shares her own experience of feeling like she had to show up to church every Sunday, but not knowing where to start. She then found an opportunity of accountability through a spiritual friendship and a Bible study. Finally, she realized that faith does not have to be overly complicated. She encourages others to find support in order to grow in their faith.Later in this conversation, Jodie and Karen discuss Jesus' teaching that believers should love the Lord their God with all of their heart, soul, mind, and strength and love their neighbor as themselves. Jodie explains that this is the primary calling for believers, and that other callings may come and go, but this one remains a constant. In order to discern God's will, Jodie suggests getting to know Him better by reading scripture, and listening for His voice. Karen adds that in doing so, believers will bear much fruit and find joy in life. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the importance of loving the Lord and loving our neighbors as key components of following God.Jodie and Karen also identify the importance of following the spirit's prompting to love and act compassionately toward others. They likened this to a big V and small V, with the big V being our vocation to love God and our neighbors, and the small V being our career and raising our families. Karen then raised the issue of lack of time, which many women face in juggling their responsibilities. She mentioned that some women had difficulty finding the time to build relationships with nonbelievers and share their faith. Jodie and Karen concluded that it is important to trust our inner promptings and to act on them despite how busy we may be.TIMESTAMPS00:00:00   Heading: Exploring Faith and Purpose with Jodie Niznick00:04:00   Cultivating a Deeper Relationship with God00:05:00   Loving God and Loving Our Neighbors00:10:00   Loving Our Neighbors and Finding Time to Do So00:11:00   Practicing the Big V Vocation of Loving God and Our Neighbors00:15:00   Living an Unhurried Life with Jesus as an Example00:17:00   Building Relationship with God and our Neighbor in Busy Seasons00:22:00   Abiding in Christ and Bearing Fruit00:24:00   Conversation Summary: Jodie's Advice on Following God's Calling00:26:00   Closing: Reflection on Our Big V Vocation and Little V VocationHIGHLIGHTSWhoever abides in Me and I in him, bears much fruit, and apart from Him, we can bear nothing. When we know we should be sharing our faith, but don't have a rich, vibrant relationship with the Lord, we're separate from Him and we can't bear fruit.Loving God and our neighbor are the two greatest commandments. Are those in alignment? When we put our own life up against the word and we figure out what's not working, It helps us identify where we need to readjust? And then bringing that to the Lord and saying, “help me in this.”Ask the Lord, “are there people you want me to love today? Is there a relationship I can start building?” One of the things that we've talked about is loving our neighbor as ourselves and I know to share Jesus with a neighbor really depends on relationship.-------->>>Helpful Resources: Connect with Jodie Niznik:“The Blue Cord" by Karen Bejjani Find it wherever books are sold online. The Blue Cord Small Group Discipleship Study. Take Your Learning DeeperJoin the iHOPE Community. Kit McCarty invites fellow podcaster Jodie Niznik to talk about her show, So Much More: Creating Space for God. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The #1 thing we can do is carve out space for God. You need to have space, practices in your life, to slow down and meditate in God's Word, savor God's Word, let it roll around in your mind in a slower way, so that we're not just reading for information, but formation. God's Word has been transformative in my life, and it is important to me to share it with others; I see myself as a guide into God's Word. The study of God's Word is incredibly important. I'm spending a lot of time these days, doing these podcasts, having conversations around how God is showing up in our lives in a real way right now, and what He's teaching us. When I finally started to get into Christian community in college, I started to study God's Word, and I discovered God for who He really is, and not who I thought He is. Truth brings freedom, and lies bring bondage. When we are given gifts and opportunities, we are called to steward those things, not hide our gifts under a rock, but to actually cultivate them. It's being open to what the Spirit wants to teach us instead of imposing our own ideas on life, on God's Word, or what we think He wants. It is always a beautiful experience for me when the Spirit shows up.REFERENCES Podcast: So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)  Books: Jodie Niznik Author Page on Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/Jodie-Niznik/e/B08L6ZTQ8LJodie Niznik Author Page on ChristianBook: https://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?Ntk=author&Ntt=Jodie%20Niznik CONTACT http://www.jodieniznik.com/Now I See:  https://linktr.ee/nowisee/ Headset Radio: https://linktr.ee/headsetradio
