Coming to us from Chicago (though not a deep dish fan) is Joel Corelitz, the composer of some of the biggest games in recent memory-- his resume includes Death Stranding, Mortal Kombat 1, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Eastward to name a few! Joel walks us through the surprising usefulness of NERF guns for audio, finding the soul of a project, and being inspired by your collaborators. Killer chip music this week from Zane Little! LINKS:

Welcome back! We’re still on hiatus, but it’s time for our annual music special, and we have a jam-packed edition this year. We’ve gone back to our older format of getting together and talking about our music selections and what they mean to us. In traditional Nerds Without Pants fashion we overshare, things get heavy, and then there’s probably a joke about boobs or something. You know how it goes by now. The boys are back for their first episode of 2022, armour donned and dropping feet first into a guns blazing, heady and impassioned round of Team Doubles in Halo Infinite: Multiplayer. Except there are no Team Doubles in Halo Infinite’s multiplayer - but don’t worry, they cover that; that and everything from TTK to the Freemium Model, to the Mangler, Step Jump, Curb Slide and the competitive scene gets a look in. Nostalgia versus modernity - was it worth the wait? Story spoilers. Just joking… This is a Pixel Vision first - a multiplayer exclusive. Stay tuned for the Campaign follow up later in the year. Saludos oyent@s! Matt & Geoff are joined by composer Joel Corelitz to discuss his work on the recently released game Eastward, his history with video games and music, and the joy of approaching each new creative project a little differently. You can find this episode's guest on Twitter and his website!
Joel Corelitz composed more than 70 tracks for the game Eastward, scheduled for release later in 2021. The music, like the game, pays tribute to the 8-bit and 16-bit era of games, with Joel's musical voice and a modern twist at times. It's colorful, nostalgic, creative and enjoyable. Here's a link to the soundtrack! You can support Level with Emily on Patreon.
This week, it's just the two of us for the first time in a minute! We share our thoughts on New Pokémon Snap & Super Mario Party's incredibly belated new online mode before diving into our main topic of the week: WHAT REMAINS OF EDITH FINCHDeveloped by Giant Sparrow Studios and published by Annapurna Interactive, this 2017 narrative adventure game explores the story of Edith Finch, a young woman & the last remaining member of her family, revisiting her abandoned childhood home: the sprawling manor of the Finch family, who have all tragically perished due to what they believe is a mysterious family curse that has haunted them for generations. Throughout this game, you explore the house, and through a series of fantastical vignettes, discover the stories of Edith's family and put together the pieces of how each Finch met their tragic end. It's a beautiful, thoughtful, and meditative game, with lots to say about how families create stories, mythologies, and histories around our homes, our lineages, and each other; but it does also deal with some pretty heavy subject matter of neglect, abuse, mental illness, self-harm, and suicide. For that reason, (as well as spoilers for the end of this game,) we've included a timestamp below for anyone who needs or would like to skip through that discussion.** Spoiler & Content/Trigger Warning (self-harm & suicide): 32:54-44:30 ** ** If you're thinking about suicide, or are worried about a friend or loved one in crisis, please call the 24/7 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline @ 1-800-273-8255 ** ========EMAIL US at gayforplaypodcast@gmail.comJoin our lil pod community & support the show by joining our PATREON FOLLOW GAY FOR PLAY!Twitter: @GayForPlayPodInstagram: @GayForPlayPodIntro and outro music by Connor Marsh (@connorjmarshmallow)Show art by Nick Adams (@stickartams)Special thanks to our patrons: Blueberri Mary, Elijah Punzal, & Martha Turner
Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding has been one of the most anticipated games in recent years. I caught up with composer and audio director Ludvig Forssell while he was in Los Angeles for The Game Awards, and he told me that it's exciting to finally be able to share what he's been working on for four years. The game is set in a not-too-distant post-apocalyptic future, filled with terrifying creatures. The player follows Sam Porter Bridges, who is tasked with a crosscountry journey to reunite the far-flung cities across America. Ludvig's soundtrack mixes alien sounds sampled from everyday items, mixed with synths and the human sounds of live strings and voice. Ludvig built the sound library from samples he and co-composer Joel Corelitz gathered at a fun shopping trip to Home Depot. He says the most surprising sounds they got came from small items, like a paint roller, that they were able to turn into epically huge sounds that add a massive scale to the instrumentals. Everything Hideo Kojima
Peter becomes a great wolf deity to bring an ink wash painted Nippon back to life in Ōkami and Joe throws ink around a white canvas to solve a painting's mystery with Joel Corelitz's work in The Unfinished Swan.
Composer Joel Corelitz talks about creating the soundscape for Death Stranding. You can see a playlist and support Level with Emily on Patreon.

We’re finally here at the end of the longest year in the history of long, bad years. We barely played any games this year, so pulling together our favorite songs was a mighty task, but we weren’t going to let you walk away empty-handed. Also, let’s be real, it’s way harder to find ten good games than games with good music. Good game music is easy. You here me, Capcom?? EASY! THERE’S NO EXCUSE FOR MEGA MAN TO SOUND LIKE THIS!*ahem*Please enjoy these hours of music and best of lists, and I hope everyone has a great end to the year from hell. May the hell be lessened and the games better in 2019. Thanks everyone, for everything.A few notes: you can find our episode for the music from games we played for the first six months of the year on Abnormal Mapping 79.
