As Scroobius Pip would say, "welcome, welcome, welcome"… On this episode 74 of The DOD45 Show we welcome our guest Mestizo. He's an underground rapper of the Machina Muerte family and the other half of one of my current favorites, A7PHA….a group that I'm willing to call a Super-Duo, of which Mestizo shares emcee duties with the legendary Doseone. We have a nice chill conversation with 'Stizo, talking' bout A7PHA's recent release, entitled Many Headed, (a brilliant EP). We also briefly chat about his coming from a long lineage of gangsters, including a gangsta grandma and he tells us a chilling experience he personally had with the spirit world. We also learn that Mestizo has a huge collection of quote, unquote “old-man” clothes and he tells the tale of a time he was on tour with Mopes and he told a Texas patrolman that they were a christian rap group that did rap for Christ to avoid getting a ticket. We have the utmost respect for anyone who has aligned themselves with our show, ostensibly leading into discussions of the deftness of Doseone and how lucky we all are, as listeners, to have the return of A7PHA. We also get to learn a lot more about Mestizo through The DOD45 Dish segment, with answers to Mestizo's Firsts, Worsts and Favorites. All of that, plus a handful of Sophie's choice questions siting names like The B-52s, B-Real, Michael Rapaport as Remy, Minnie Driver, Faith Hill, Corpse Bride, Ray Charles, Jeremy Piven, Jeremy Renner and a handful of others. We hit it off real quick with Mestizo, which makes this one of them nice, concise, chill kind of chats. So throw the laundry in the bin, brush off the layers of base, holster your switchblades, line up your lazy eyes and zone in on this episode 74 of The DOD45 Show with Mestizo. As a founding member of anticon, frontman of Themselves, Subtle, 13&God, etc., and too many other projects to list, Doseone has secured his legacy as one of hip hop's most unique and accomplished multidisciplinary artists. We drill into his stony veneer as he shares not only his artistic but his emotional drives, revealing his relationship with death, aggression, and therapy. doseone.bandcamp.com Our bonus episode features an additional 15 minutes with Doseone, as he describes his outlook on politics, classism and Saafir. Additionally Andrew Mbaruk shares his impressions of Doseone's G Is For Deep album. It's available, along with all our past bonus content, for $3 at patreon.com/weirdrap. Eb&Flow presents part one of his Rap Grifters series, investigating the growing phenomenon of white supremacists and other nefarious infiltrators of hip hop culture who covertly work towards dangerous political aims under the guise of artistry. And we proudly debut Kool Keith's Weird Rap Horoscope series! Adventure Minesweeper, Zelda Sudoku, Tetris Effect: Alles Spiele, die eigentlich recht langweiligen klassischen Konzepten neues, aufregendes Leben einhauchen. Kasting Cuzzins: A Podcast About Rap... By Two Recovering White Rappers
Too hot for the Kast?! In this special mini-episode, we talk to Steve about his Imaginatron project and some of his biggest artistic influences. We also get into all the times he challenged major rappers (Aesop Rock, Slug, Busdriver, Doseone) to battle... and which of those rappers were especially not having it.
Early alumni of the show (episode 11!) Andrew Broder (aka Fog) created this therapeutic all vinyl mix just days ago exclusively for the House List and I gotta tell ya, it's a pleasant offering. Subtle, meditative and measured with a really unique crosshatch of genre and intention. This is a good one to get lost within. I'd recommend it for staring out of windows, going for short government mandated walks, resting, drawing, cooking, cleaning and just about anything else. Again, all mixed straight from Broder's vinyl collection in Minneapolis, MN. He has a vast catalog of amazing original music too - I highly recommend checking out - andrewbroder.bandcamp.com - and supporting or streaming his recent projects. If you may not be familiar at all with Broder's work - he has collaborated with the likes of Bon Ever, Serengeti, WHY?, Andrew Bird, Doseone, and many others. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 303 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! In a world where genres are so slippery and tricksy and hard to pin down, Anticon was a label in the hip hop realm which routinely defied definition. This week Pip sits down with one of the original crew members to chop it up about the good old days, as well as the present and the future - ladies and gentlemen, this week’s guest is YONI WOLF (aka WHY? - band and solo)!Pip and Yoni share many mutual friends, influences and interests, and it seems mad that the two haven’t gotten together in the podcast huddle and recorded a chat before. Well - let history be righted as they finally crowbar in some good jibber jabber time to reflect on all sort of necessary goodness, including mic control, Pip’s relationship with the first cLOUDDEAD album (the group comprised of Why, Doseone and Odd Nosdam), the exclusivity of hip hop and the rap milieu of the time, the rest of the Anticon crew including the truly unfortunate passing of Alias, touring and the delights and non-delights thereof, his father’s messianic preaching and how he unknowingly introduced Yoni to rapping, his relationship to labelmate and mate-mate Doseone (who actually battled Eminem in the past - I kid you not), dealing with crohns and health issues, veganism, touring under three different presidents, his own podcast ‘The Wandering Wolf’, Meteor Festival and the controversies that surrounded it and rounded off with some ever resonant mental health talk. Beautiful - whether you know Anticon or Why’s music or not, this will give you some real wisdom. One listen to Hood’s intriguing fifth album ‘Cold House’ would have you think that they were just another bunch of perennially morose Northern Englishmen. Not so. This week Weaver aims to tell you otherwise. Despite critical acclaim, some tasty tours and lovely festival slots, Hood never did seem to catch the right wave. By the time record came around, they’d been ploughing their trade for ten years, and had recorded and released a ton of songs, exploring many different musical avenues. With this record though, it seems to come together. The second release on Domino, and the backing some indie press, was enough to see them continue for another few years. Then the promptly vanished altogether. One of the brothers who made up the core unit of the band, Richard Adams, moved onto The Declining Winter, whilst Chris now creates music under the name A Remote Viewer, Bracken and runs a label called Home Assembly. Nevertheless, Weaver argues that this is a true unsung classic, and the band’s melancholic magnum opus. A strange mixture of electronica, post-rock, indie and trip hop is what you can expect to find on this album. The trip hop elements bolstered with guest spots by Anticon co-founders Why? and Doseone. In this episode we chat about the album, try to define what it is about some English bands that just screams “dull” and a whole bunch more. Is Cold House worthy of inclusion in our discography? You know what to do.

This episode is culled from an old cassette I discovered, where in 2001 (I believe) I interview Brendon 'Alias' Whitney from the Anticon collective. On the same tape were conversations with Doseone and Sole, but I wanted to share this. It was recorded on the phone as part of a larger story, although I don't recall where I wrote the piece for. Alias was in Oakland at the time. It's short but a great snap-shot of time. 85 On this episode of Best Song Ever the dear, dear cousins are live on location at Luke’s Dark Baptism where they sing a song to Satan, play a special Halloween game of Hymn or Horror and Luke sneakily signs Brian’s name in the Book of the Beast setting off a cataclysmic chain of events as Brian now has competing claims over his soul. Even amidst all this excitement, Brian would rather be playing Red Dead Redemption II. Also, Luke confuses Mike Krol for Nick Krol and thinks all albums should be under 10 minutes. The cousins discuss being polite Midwestern boys and enter a Joke Free Zone as they talk about an artist who has passed away. Upon leaving the joke free zone they dig deep into the hunks of Grey’s Anatomy, discover Luke’s coffee has been spiked with goof juice, Brian gives some McDonald’s Life Hacks and the cousins both whisper like creeps all while playing the six best songs you’ll hear all week!Every week Ghettoblaster feature writers (and dear cousins!) Brian LaBenne and Luke LaBenne bring you fresh new songs with the hopes of introducing you to some that you may consider to be the best song ever. Unrelenting talent. That is the only way I can describe Jeff Logan (JEL) and Adam Drucker (Dose One). Over a multitude of genre, regional scene, and the technological wave of change from late 90's to now - the two have maintaining a certain sense of unbreakable innovation. Our conversation winds around from the past to the present, with a lot of great stories from what now may be a bygone era. But the sheer creative abilities these two have within a group setting (Subtle, 13&God, Themselves) as well as individual artists should be celebrated and studied by generations to come.
