Zacks' Blank: Recession for 2024 'is completely off the table'

John Blank, chief investment strategist and chief economist at Zacks Investment Research, says that there will not be a recession -- or anything resembling it -- this year, but he makes it clear the can't be said for 2025, once the election cycle and concerns about the impact of higher interest rates and inflation staying around longer play out. Blank says he does not expect the Federal Reserve to be pressured into making rate cuts, but notes that it could make a cut in the fall leading into the election if the data suggests one is appropriate, but he doesn't see the central bank moving off of its plan to get inflation back to the 2 percent level. When that plays out in that recession that's coming for next year, Blank says it could help to minimize the duration of the downturn. Also on the show, Adam Ruben, vice president of the Economic Security Project, discusses the group's survey of consumers using the IRS Direct File pilot program, noting  that the new filing methods drew a lot of consumer interest but also a lot of praise by the 140,000-plus taxpayers who used the system across 12 states. He expects the IRS to dramatically expand the program in the near future, given the strength of the results this year. Plus, in the Market Call, Noland Langford, chief executive officer at Left Brain Wealth Management talks growth stocks.

John Blank, chief equity strategist/chief economist at Zacks Investment Research, says the range-bound market is going to stick around unchanged until the Federal Reserve changes its policies. Once inflation comes down, Blank says 'the market is going to rally like you've never seen.' But even now, Blank says the economy is having its soft landing -- and has been in one for some time -- no matter how much most economists protest that there hasn't been any landing yet. Also on the show, Scott Fulford, author of 'The Pandemic Paradox: How the COVID Crisis Made Americans More Financially Secure,' survey researcher Jenn Tracy on a study showing about how Americans are -- or aren't -- pampering themselves during tough economic times, and, in the 'Find Me The Money' segment, forensic accountant Tracy Coenen talks about the documents and paper trail that you need and how to follow them to find the proof of financial infidelity.

John Blank, chief economist and chief investment strategist for Zacks Investment Research, says that the limited options facing Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell leave the economy in a situation where inflation will be sticky and the market will be more stable but likely more sideways, at least until pricing pressure eases. "The soft landing isn't what's going to happen," Blank says. "The Fed's going to get comfortable with a higher level of prices and rice inflation and just stop because it can't do anything about this." Zach Jonson, chief investment officer at Stack Financial Management, says that the market's technicals are showing that recent gains are more likely a bear market rally rather than the start of a new bull market, largely because there hasn't been much breadth and support to the gains. Until the rally reflects greater participation -- with fewer companies making new lows -- Jonson says the current move up is likely a temporary one. And Tracie McMillion, head of global asset allocation and investment strategy for the Wells Fargo Investment Institute kicks things off talking about how the 60-40 portfolio is alive and well despite an awful start to the year that could hold up and make this one of the worst years ever for that classic balanced approach to investing.

With little to no growth around the world right now, Blank suggests that investors -- especially those with shorter time horizons -- focus more on domestic stocks because despite a slowing economy the best growth opportunities remain here. In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist and Editor of Zacks Large Cap Trader, for a discussion about the travel industry under the Trump Administration. Trump’s Impact on Mexico Tourism Both Tracey and John recently took vacations to Mexico, with John traveling by car down the Baja and Tracey flying into Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan peninsula. John traveled to see the gray whales and was surprised to see that many of the boats that should have been full with nature-loving tourists, mostly from Europe, were empty. Tracey talked to a restauranteur in town who said that business plunged in January after Trump’s initial executive order restricting travel from 7 countries and after the Trump Administration’s comments about free trade and building the wall. US Tourism Could Lose Too Back in the United States, New York City has already said it could lose 300,000 tourists a year thanks to negative sentiment about traveling to the United States. Additionally, some economists estimate that between $50 billion and $70 billion could be lost due to tourists deciding not to visit America. That could impact thousands of jobs. With all of this uncertainty, is now a good, or a bad, time to be investing in the travel stocks? Tracey and John look at the online travel agents as well as a few of the airlines. Investment Ideas in the Travel Industry 1. Priceline (PCLN) is the king of online travel. Shares have been hitting new all-time highs and trade with a forward P/E of 23, but it still has double digit earnings growth. Is it still a buy? 2. Expedia (EXPE) is more expensive, at 30x, but its earnings growth is also stronger than Priceline’s. Earnings are expected to rise 22.6% in 2017 and another 37.5% in 2018. Watch for an upward revision in earnings estimates as it’s a Zacks #5 (Strong Sell) right now. 3. Southwest (LUV) has blamed bad weather in California for a slowing this quarter. When does that ever happen? 4. American Airlines (AAL) is one of the cheaper domestic carriers with a forward P/E of 9. But should you be buying domestic or international airlines, or neither, right now? 5. International Airlines Group (ICAGY) might not be familiar to you, but you would know its brands. It flies about 550 aircraft under the British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling logos. Europe’s economy is heating up. When the economy is stronger, people travel more. Another area to look for ideas in are the timeshare companies. Yes, timeshare companies are again seeing record revenue. In spite of a challenge from Airbnb, consumers are still buying timeshares. There are other travel areas investors should consider including the cruise ship companies and hotel chains. What else do Tracey and John think about the travel industry and investing in 2017? In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist and the Editor of Zacks Large Cap Trader. John is also an economist, so who better to ask about what could go right, and what could also go wrong, with the US economy in 2017? Tracey and John discuss: 1. The spiking 10-year treasury. Will yields slow the economy in 2017? John describes the 2017 economy as 2014 redux. Remember, back in 2014, rates also spiked to nearly 3%. But John believes “this time is different.” Find out why. 2. Could the US go into a recession in 2017? John describes what really makes a recession. It’s not what you think. And he and Tracey debate whether or not the conditions could be favorable for one in 2017. Their Favorite Stocks for 2017 Despite the surge in the small cap indexes to end 2016, Tracey and John are fans of mid and large cap stocks for 2017. 1. Seagate (STX) is one of John’s picks. It is both cheap and pays a fantastic dividend yielding 6.2%. 2. Western Digital (WDC) is a favorite of John’s. It trades with a forward P/E of only 12.5 and also pays a juicy dividend yielding 3.5%. 3. Tracey still likes the energy stocks like BP (BP). It has been entering into deals and pays a dividend of 6.5%. 4. Semiconductors are another favorite area for Tracey. Cree Inc. (CREE) just raised its full year guidance. Nvdia (NVDA) also remains one of the hottest stocks in the S&P 500. What other surprises should you prepare for in the US economy in 2017? Tune into this week’s podcast to find out. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist, to discuss what’s going on in America’s housing market. In 2016, builders are expected to add 320,000 new apartments across the United States, up 50% from 2015. Tracey and John have the most hands on experience with Chicago and Los Angeles as Tracey lives in Chicago and John lives in Los Angeles so they are both able to see the cranes that are dominating the skylines. In Chicago, another 8,300 apartments are expected in 2016 with 6,200 going up in Los Angeles. There are also big condo/hotel and commercial real estate projects going up in both cities. Los Angeles has a $700 million mixed use project expected to go up across from the Staples Center. In Chicago, ground was just recently broken on the Vista Tower, a $1 billion hotel and condo building which will be the third tallest in the city. Tracey and John discuss whether or not it is too much at too high of prices. Who owns all of these buildings? Will someone get into trouble if there is an economic slowdown? As a stock investor, you can own apartment REITs. Tracey and John discuss some of the biggest REITs and their payouts: 1. Equity Residential (EQR): dividend = 3.1% 2. AvalonBay (AVB): dividend = 3.1% 3. UDR (UDR): dividend = 3.4% They also discuss the single family home rental market which has become big business after companies bought up foreclosures following the Great Recession. There are two big home rental companies: 1. American Homes 4 Rent (AMH) 2. Colony Starwood Homes (SFR) Colony said in the second quarter that total occupancy was at 95% and that it was still seeing “strong demand.” Should you invest in any of these real estate stocks? Why There Won't Be a Recession in 2016 - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 20

In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist, to cover a topic that is on everyone’s lips: Is the US economy headed into a recession in 2016? Here is the original article: http://www.zacks.com/stock/news/208369/why-there-wont-be-a-recession-in-2016 John has a PhD in economics, so he looks at the economy from a data point of view, much like the Fed. He says there are two components the Federal Reserve looks at: GDP and employment. Employment is especially important. In 2007, monthly employment started going into the negative well ahead of the economy. It was a sign of the recession to come. In 2016, the employment numbers have been particularly strong. The unemployment rate is at 4.9%. Monthly job creation has averaged over 200,000 the prior 3 months. Even the weekly jobless claims don’t hint at any stresses despite the losses in the energy sector, with only 262,000 claims last week, the lowest since November 2015. But what about all that gloomy manufacturing data? Isn’t it a warning sign? John explains that with the purchasing managers indexes (PMIs), that the component with the input costs has plunged due to commodities prices falling. But future orders and backlog have held up well. Purchasing managers are also adjusting their behavior as crude prices continue to fall. They are being conditioned to wait until the last minute to place orders because the prices keep falling. What about the crude crash? Could that push the US into a recession? While there will be some pain in the oil producing states like Texas and the Dakotas, the other states will benefit from the gasoline stimulus. Gas prices are below $2 a gallon even in Chicago, which is historically one of the most expensive markets. In other parts of the country, it is even lower. This is real savings and is finally showing up in restaurants and retail sales. There are other dangers to the economy such as a falling stock market. John explains how big of a pullback the S&P 500 would have to have to push the US economy into a recession. A mere 10% sell off won’t do it. Tracey and John also discuss other possible stimuli to the US economy, including stimulus coming from areas you might not have thought about. If there isn’t a recession, what stocks should you be thinking about buying for 2016? Tracey and John are still betting on the consumer. The Best Chinese Stocks for 2016 - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 11

In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist and editor of Zacks International Trader newsletter, as they discuss which are the best Chinese stocks for 2016. John has been investing in Chinese stocks in the International Trader for several years so he’s ridden the ups and downs in that market. He thinks there’s opportunities to get into some Chinese stocks in the new year, but he warns that investors have to be careful about the short sellers, which can decimate some of the small market cap names. He advises investors to stay in the biggest names like Baidu (BIDU), Ctrip.com (CTRP), and Trina Solar (TSL). Investors also have to be aware of the dangers of these companies going private, as Qihoo (QIHU), a Chinese internet company, just announced. Qihoo traded as high as $124 a share in 2014 before plunging in 2015. But it is going private at just $77 a share, which would be a significant loss for a shareholder who bought at the peak. Tracey hasn’t invested in Chinese stocks, either in her personal portfolio or in her Zacks services, including Value Investor, for several years after getting burned a couple of years ago in some of the fraudulent reverse merger stocks. Is she letting her past experiences taint her views? If she had to invest, she shares two Chinese stocks she would be buying for 2016 if she were going to buy Chinese stocks. Tracey and John also discuss Alibaba’s (BABA) mysterious recent acquisition of a Hong Kong English-language newspaper and magazines for $260 million. Tracey dislikes the deal because it is outside of Alibaba’s core business expertise but John thinks it will just expand Alibaba’s content reach. Should Alibaba be on your “buy” list for 2016? What other Chinese stocks are the best in their class? Listen to this week’s podcast to find out. How to Invest in Canadian Stocks - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 5

In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist and the editor of the International Trader. John is Zacks’ expert on the global economy and international stocks. One of the most frequent questions the Zacks strategists are asked is how to invest in Canada. Tracey and John discuss the “easy” way to invest, which is simply by buying the iShares Canada ETF (#EWC). Is this a good strategy for investors? It is heavily weighted in financials and energy. Shares are down big in 2015 due to the decline in oil prices and a stock sell off in a pharmaceutical company which was one of its largest holdings. But given the pullback, is now the time to buy in? If you’re not going to buy the ETF, what individual Canadian stocks are there that investors can buy on the US exchanges? While staying out of the energy and materials sectors, Tracey and John explore a handful of stocks including Agrium (#AGU), an agribusiness company based in Calgary, Brookfield Asset Management (BAM), a diversified real estate investment company headquartered in Toronto, and a couple of consumer stocks including lululemon (#LULU), the famous yoga athletic wear retailer, and Restaurant Brands (#QSR), which owns Burger King and Tim Horton’s. Despite these good quality names, Canada is still lagging in producing industry leaders in other sectors, including in technology. John shares his insights on what the Canadians need to do to diversify their economy and tap into the hot knowledge cities like Vancouver and Montreal that are brimming with talent. Canada is also currently in a recession. How long will it last? And should investors be getting in now, before the rebound? If you’ve always wondered how to invest in Canadian stocks, listen in to find out.
