Most magnets are made from rare-earth elements imported from China, and access to these elements has become a bargaining chip in the U.S. trade war with China. But the magnet supply could become less of a concern, if a Minnesota company is successful in its bid to replace rare-earth magnets. Niron Magnetics held an official groundbreaking of its new manufacturing plant in Sartell last week. MPR News correspondent Kirsti Marohn joined Minnesota Now to share what she's learned, as a part of a regular check-in with reporters in Greater Minnesota.
Why is a nuclear peace deal between the U.S. and Iran key to stability in the Middle East? What would the global consequences of a full-scale trade war between China and America be? Is the world headed towards another arms race? How should Canada respond to Trump's repeated threats of annexation? And why is liberal democracy worth defending? This is Part 2 of Steve Paikin's wide-ranging conversation with CNN's Fareed Zakaria. Over the last few months U.S.-China trade relations have been pretty hard to make sense of – unless you look at what's happening through the lens of game theory. Game theory is all about how decisions are made, based not just on one side's options and payoffs, but on the choices and incentives of others. So, are Donald Trump and Xi Jinping competing in a simple game of chicken? Or is the game more like the prisoner's dilemma? On today's show, we try to decide which of four possibilities might be the best model for this incredibly high-stakes game. And we take a look at who is playing well and who might need to adjust their strategy. For more on the U.S.-China trade war: - The 145% tariff already did its damage - What happened to U.S. farmers during the last trade war - What "Made in China" actually meansThis show was hosted by Keith Romer and Amanda Aronczyk. With U.S.-China tariff levels reaching historic highs and a fragile truce now in place, economic experts examine how the trade relationship has shifted in 2025—and where it might be headed next. What are the strategic goals behind the sweeping tariff measures imposed by both sides? How are they reshaping trade flows, business decisions, and bilateral diplomacy? What lessons can we draw from the past seven years of trade tensions, and how do current developments fit into broader patterns of economic decoupling and strategic competition? In an interview conducted on May 13, 2025, Claire Reade and Andrew Greenland join PIP fellow Spencer Cohen to explore the implications of recent tariff developments for U.S.-China trade, domestic political pressures, and the global economic order. This week on Economic Update, Professor Wolff delivers updates on Trump's cuts to school mental health counselors, the mass strike in LA County, why China is better positioned for a trade war with the U.S., and how profit drives corporate decisions to relocate U.S. factories overseas, thereby making the US economy vulnerable to long, global supply lines.
