In this episode we discuss the books of Joshua and Judges and how they are understood in second-temple apocalyptic literature. Though not often talked about, when they are referenced, they are assimilated into the later apocalyptic tradition. The lack of references is also discussed in light of apocalypticism downplaying synergism and human involvement in ultimate salvation. Welcome, after a short break for the holiday season, to episode forty-five of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by Dr. Jennifer Matheny, Assistant Professor of Old Testament at Nazarene Theological Seminary. Jenny is an alum of Ozark Christian College. She has done graduate work at Mennonite Seminary, and George Fox Seminary. She has a Master's Degree in Old Testament Studies from Regent College and completed her Ph.D. degree at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. In addition to her academic work, Jenny has served as a youth minister, church planter, and church revitalization in Kansas, Missouri, California, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Canada.In our conversation we talk about her interest and work in the unique OT books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth as well as her interest in the prophet Jeremiah. She has unique perspectives on the women, cultural practices, the use of bodies, and even the significance of dress or clothing in these important texts. Jenny has also recently been named as the Director of the Wynkoop Center for Women in Leadership at NTS. The purpose of Survey of the Old Testament is to help students to better understand the content of each of the Old Testament books, the historical events that give context to them, and to answer specific questions that help draw out the overarching principles contained in the Old Testament. Power To Give Life The angel of the LORD is said to have power to give life (Genesis 16:10). Only God has this power. All-Knowing The quality of omniscience, or knowing everything, is attributed to the angel of the LORD (Genesis 16:13; Exodus 3:7). Judge The Earth The angel of the LORD is called the "Judge of all the earth" (Genesis 18:25). This is a title that belongs to God alone. Forgive Sin The Bible says that only God can forgive sin. I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins (Isaiah 43:25). Yet the angel of the LORD had authority to forgive sins (Exodus 23:21). Receive Worship Worshipbelongs to God and Him alone. Yet the angel of the LORD was worshipped by Moses and Joshua. No man has seen or can see God Exodus 33:19-21 (NKJV)Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. Change in leadership can be unsettling. When Moses died, God called Joshua to take over leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, into a place of settled-ness. Becoming a settler required great courage in overcoming the enemies and obstacles to receive the gift of land and rest.
