Adam's almost 20-year career in applied research and national security has included serving as a Program Manager at the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), then as a Program Manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) (where he was known as the DARPAnthropologist) and in May 2022 was appointed as the Acting Deputy Director to help stand up the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). Adam has a BA in cultural anthropology from Duke University and a D.Phil. in social anthropology from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has also represented the United States in rugby at the international level, having played for the US national men's rugby team (the Eagles). What is apocalypticism? Why are some many people obsessed with the apocalypse? Is apocalypticism inherently wrong?

For this episode, I was joined by an Ex-Muslim convert Al-Muealim. Al-Muealim was a pentecostal Christian up to the age of 18 then he converted to Islam for about seven years. He later left Islam and is now an agnostic atheist and he is interested in the academic analysis of the origins of various religions. Al-Muealim was gracious enough to share with us his journey from Christianity to Islam then to losing faith. We discussed the points that make Islam more appealing to Christians, particularly fundamentalist Christians.  Al-Muealim recounted how the idea of a single God and the preservation of the Quran lured him to Islam. We also talked about stories in the Quran that seem to have pre-Islamic origins for example the stories that were circulating in Syriac well before the Quran was written. The discussion then moved to the evolution of polytheism to monotheism. We also talked about theophorics and how it is used to piece together the history of gods. Al-Muealim and I then touched on how Muhammad Muhammad was an apocalyptic prophet and how the concept of the afterlife (heaven and hell), and Satan/Iblis were later on integrated into the Abrahamic religions. We also discussed the parallels between the Christian version of apocalypticism and that found in the Quran. In recent years Progressivism has developed into one of the most powerful political and religious forces in the contemporary world. Even within more traditionally conservative communities, Progressivism has made significant inroads. One of the common phrases heard within Progressivism is that there is a ‘right side of history’. This idea captures the belief that there is a correct position to take on many contentious issues within contemporary society. Depending on where you locate yourself in relation to that position, defines whether you are a relic of the past or a citizen of the future. In this way, the Progressive appears to posses a type of clairvoyant ability to know the future, or at least, how the future should turn out if we heed their sagely advice. But what if the future is radically undecided and all our visions of how things should be are in actual fact adaptations of our present worldview… much like animated sitcom The Jetsons offered a fantastical future that really just represented the ideals of the age in which it was made. In contrast to Progressivism, I’ll be making a case for Apocalypticism. In Apocalypticism we do not pretend to know what the future will be like - or should be like - and instead concentrate on exposing the cracks within the present system. An approach that can open up the possibility of novelty in the world, and lead to the formation of previously unimagined solutions to the problems we face today. The human mind cringes at change, heightening fear! The unknown outcome of this planetary pause has many acting out their fears. Has a zombie apocalypse; even tongue in cheek; crossed your mind? Apocalypticism has been alive throughout the ages. For example, Beliefs that the end is near, was written in the book of Revelations, and has been ongoing across the ages. Whether the belief of our demise comes in the form of famine, war, cataclysmic earthquakes, tsunamis or pandemic disease, we as humans fear our own demise. And yet the ages pass, we stick with what we know, even when it's not working, and somehow the human species still continues to rise up. This we hope is the truth today. But what did we believe before and what did we do about it. In the past versions, water would turn to blood, and a violent end would be the outcome for billions of Earths' inhabitants. Imagine the wrath of God reining down upon us, and unimaginable creatures, maybe even zombies remain to walk the earth. Haha! Gratefully I believe in a loving God. I always say, trust in God but lock your car. So lets figure this out and have faith that this too will pass. We will discover a new way of being, in fact it is happening now. A new way. One that, in the short time ahead of us, has an opportunity for survival. But how does it feel, to be still? Because many of us, put stillness off. There is no time to pause. the kids, the job, friends and a four car garage. Prior to this stillness, there was only busyness. And that was killing us, by the millions. Bigger than c19 was heart disease and cancer and all kinds of loathsome diseases. And yet busyness remained unchecked. Driving us off the cliff of despair. Scientist screamed, tree huggers' hugged, disbelievers dis-believed. Our only way of living, being this dying planet. In search for a future home somewhere in our planetary system we searched. The next potential inhabitable planet must exist. And yet we have a planet. One with grace and beauty beyond imaginable. Blue oceans and rivers turned to sludge, the skies yellowed with pollution and extinction loomed. Year after year our planet cried out for stillness and we refused to be still. In all essence we are slowly but surely killing this beautiful planet that sustains all life. And even when we understood this we refused to do anything about it. And then it changed. In a heartbeat we stopped. A plague has brought us together and pulled apart. Some forced into submission but something we can't even see with the naked eye. And like many things we can't see, we know it exists. In movies, we watched horrified as a black and lethal fog snakes through the streets. Do we quiver fearfully? Possibly. But there is something else, in the air, that we can not see. Call that faith, resilience, will. What science can reveal to us today, will change tomorrow. But we are here, changed. Witnessing the most powerful event in this century. And how will be be? How to be still. How to save our self and each other in our stillness Because what I see is, the planet breathing a sigh of relief, as industrial waste stops, planes grounded, cars sit quietly, the human machines hush. As Mother breaths in, she gives us a promise of clearing ocean and blue skies.  A new un-normal normal arises from the stillness enters the mind. Disquieting stillness. What to do about it? Enter it. Breath it, revel in it. Become the stillness. Reflect the stillness. Absorb stillness. learn to be still. Hush the inner voice, raise awareness and evolve into the power of stillness. While chaos swirls around us, focus on what we can control. Turn down the lights, remove stimuli and focus on one item in the room. Tune into every detail. textures, curves, lines, size, color, form, light, weight, volume. Delight in what you can discover about your breath easing, heart rate slowing. This is calm.  Time for our parasympathetic system to relax. There is no right or wrong way to stillness. Some may want to focus on a soothing image, others tranquilizing music. In fact there may be no other experience that will ever be quite like this one.  A planetary pause, together yet alone. Together we face the common threat to our existence. How will we meet this challenge? Knowing some will die. Maybe many, friends, family will be affected by illness. Each of us may enter and exit stillness in a different way. Rethinking Hell contributor Chris Date recently presented a paper at Lloyd Strickland's and Andrew Crome's conference, "Imagining the Last Things: Eschatology and Apocalypticism, 1500-Present." Chris's paper, "An Unquenchable Doctrine: The Tenacity of Conditional Immortality in Recent History," outlines the history of conditionalism since the Reformation and its increasing popularity despite attempts by traditionalists to stamp it out, and the evolution of the doctrine of eternal torment into something much more moderate than would be recognizable to Christians of the past.

Charles Shiro Inouye has just written a fantastic book, _The End of the World, Plan B: A Guide for the Future_ (Greg Kofford Books, 2016). In it, he demonstrates how the most popular ways of framing Apocalyptic narratives--as a violent and cataclysmic event that makes clear the triumph of justice in which the wicked are punished and the righteous rewarded--does not actually match the fullest view on this subject as taught by the great world religions. Justice as the supreme virtue reigning over the end of all things has never been the main point, nor is it the best understanding of that virtue. Certainly it is important, but justice is intended to ultimately lead us toward compassion and a viewing of the world and its inhabitants, human as well as other forms of life, as God does, or as Dharma or the Tao attempt to call us toward. Apocalyptic teachings--with the word "apocalypse" referring to the great "revelation"--whether applied to the final end of the world and human inhabitants, or to our own end of the world that comes with our death, are instead designed to lead us into self-examinations of the world’s conditions, what justice would demand, including its implications for our lives, our own complicity in suffering or unfairness that comes from our communal lives, as well as the sobering realizations that agency will always make it impossible for us to ensure that our children will choose our same values as theirs. The teachings are not to make us feel smug that we’ll the "saved" remnant when the final bell might toll for the earth. Instead, what justice is designed to do, ultimately, is to lead us through sorrow to a state of coming to recognize as our own state of being what it is that God sees, and to then turn in compassion toward those not yet understanding the true nature of reality and the highest forms of fulfillment. It is to call us to be "saviors on Mount Zion," to the path of the Bodhisattva who postpones her or his own entrance into Nirvana in order to be with and teach and model compassion to all forms of life, to the "hero’s journey" described by Joseph Campbell and others that is and embodied in so many stories the world over and in every generation of the one who passes through trials and sorrows, learning from each challenge how she or he has falsely identified with various aspects of life that have prevented their true nature from fully shining forth, only to then come to grasp the life of the Gods and then return to her or his community as a teacher/savior. "Plan B" encompasses learning and turning of these sorts. It is a powerful way of understanding so much that is compelling at the heart of the great world religions, so much that is on the path of a genuine spiritual adventurer. In this two-part episode, author Charles Shiro Inouye, joins Charles Randall Paul, James McLachlan, and Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon for a discussion of these elements present in the great traditions, and which serve--whether distant or immediate--as a call to us all, as something we recognize in our deepest core as the common denominator of our spiritual heroes. Toward the end, the panelists also speak of connections and differences between eastern ideas about "non-attachment" and "nothingness" and LDS (and other western) notions of "eternal" families/relationships. Are there also connections between these concepts and the call of Zion for its members to be of "one heart and mind"?

Pietism, Apocalypticism, and Retreatism — these are bad church ideas that are responsible for much of the political apostasy baptizing our present society.

What makes the book of Revelation unique? How should we begin to understand it’s meaning and message? Dr. Ben Witherington here explains it in its literary genre of apocalypticism.

We interview documentarian and former radio and television host Zeke Piestrup about his new film Apocalypse Later: Harold Camping vs The End of The World. After attending the premiere, we liked his work.  But we were just as intrigued with the story behind the filmmaker. Zeke exemplifies many of the virtues we are seeking in this podcast, so we are glad to present this as our first Bonus B-Side. Bart Ehrman is back on the podcast talking about his newest book Did Jesus Exist? Don't worry the answer is YES!
