Gary shares insights into the complexities of conversion, emphasizing that it is not merely a one-time event but an ongoing process that requires time and reflection. Throughout the episode, Gary discusses the significance of the temple in his faith journey, highlighting how his understanding evolved from initial confusion to a deeper appreciation for its role in connecting him to Jesus Christ. He stresses the importance of personal connections and clear messaging when discussing the temple, advocating for a focus on the principles of Jesus rather than the mystique often surrounding the temple experience. Gary also addresses the challenges of being perceived as a newcomer in the faith, noting the need for patience and understanding as individuals navigate their spiritual journeys at their own pace. 02:08 - Gary's Journey from Baptist Minister to Latter-day Saint 03:01 - Conversation Dynamics Between Friends 04:11 - Life Updates from Gary Miller 05:44 - The Complexity of Conversion Stories 06:34 - Cultural vs. Theological Conversion 09:14 - The Ongoing Nature of Conversion 10:27 - The Binary Nature of Faith Commitment 12:14 - The Importance of Personal Reflection in Faith 13:18 - Navigating the Journey of Faith 15:23 - The Cage Stage of New Believers 18:12 - The Need for Quiet Reflection 19:08 - Balancing Old and New Faith Communities 21:00 - Building a Foundation in Faith 22:33 - The Role of the Temple in Conversion 25:49 - Personal Connections and Understanding the Temple 29:06 - The Temple as a Place of Worship 30:40 - Messaging the Importance of the Temple 32:07 - The Need for Authentic and Simple Messaging 34:01 - Engaging with Old Friends about the Temple 36:29 - The Gravity of Worship in the Temple 37:34 - Current Calling and Church Involvement 38:32 - Gary's Podcasting Journey 41:08 - Balancing Scripture The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. The Republican Professor

We discuss among other things going to college in Hawai'i. Join our conversation today with our very special guest (are there ever non-special guests ?) Dr. Shannon Holzer of Houston Baptist University. We discuss going to college in Hawai'i, grade inflation v. academic excellence, and some favorite professors. We also talk about our students. We discuss recent students versus the way students were ten years ago, grade inflation (did I mention we talk about grade inflation?), going to school in Hawai'i, what he was like as a student and a veteran of the US Marine Corps versus what more recent student trends look like, incentive structures in Higher Education and K-12, and seminary training in preparation for Ph.D. work in Constitutional Law and Philosophy. Guest bio: Professor Shannon Holzer, Ph.D. served for several years in the United States Marine Corps before going to college. Dr. Holzer has earned degrees in the areas of religion, philosophy, and politics/Constitutional Law. He earned his undergraduate degree at a small Baptist college in Hawai'i called Wayland Baptist University on the island O'ahu where he majored in Religion with a special focus on Biblical Studies. During college, Professor Holzer developed an interest in the discipline of Philosophy, and so he moved to California to earn an M.A. in Philosophy from Biola University's graduate program there, where he focused on Philosophy of Religion and Ethics at Talbot School of Theology in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Sensing a need for further training in the application of his training to areas of Constitutional Law and Politics, Dr. Holzer then moved to Texas in order to earn a Ph.D. in Religion, Politics, and Society at the world-famous J.M. Dawson Institute for Church-State Studies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He had met the rigorous standards of multiple philosophers on his dissertation committee in which he focused specifically on philosophical (epistemological) issues in First Amendment jurisprudence and its impact on society. Shannon has a commitment to service and academic excellence which he models faithfully for his students. In addition to having served as a pastor in Hawai'i and his military service, Dr. Holzer has served in K-12 education as a public school teacher and sports coach in Los Angeles County and has taught in the community colleges and universities for many years, accumulating a rich set of experiences. He draws from this deep well of service with compassion, humility, and faithful commitment to academic excellence. Professors mentioned include Dr. Dallas Willard of USC Philosophy Department, Dr. Craig Blomberg, Dr. JP Moreland, Dr. William Lane Craig, Dr. David Ciocchi of Biola, Dr. R. Douglas Geivett of Biola, Francis Beckwith of Baylor, and Dr. David Howle of Wayland Baptist University Hawai'i, and my (Dr. Mather's) WBU Government professor on Marine Corps Station Kaneohe whose name I have forgotten. Schools mentioned include Wayland Baptist University on O'ahu, Hawai'i, Denver Seminary, Baylor University, Biola University, International College and Graduate School (Nu'uanu) off the Pali Hwy on O'ahu (upstairs from International Baptist Church) and Glendale High School (California). Churches mentioned in this episode include Hope Chapel Kaneohe and International Baptist Church just off the Pali Highway, leeward side, in the Nu'uanu valley in the Honolulu metropolitan area (Lucas' church at the time). Military bases mentioned include Hickam AFB, Marine Corps Station Kaneohe, Schofield Barracks, and Wheeler Army Airfield. Films mentioned include "From Here to Eternity."

Author Kevin Miller's new book "White Skies, Black Mingo" is set in the 1800s, as a young Native American girl from the Ohio Seneca tribe flees an epidemic with her mother and grandmother and after being orphaned, ends up in the darkest hours of the Civil War. The book is a fascinating read based on author Kevin D. Miller's family history, and he joins us as a special guest on this edition of the Big Time Talker Podcast, powered by Speakermatch.com. Kevin is a veteran of the United States Air Force. He worked as a Ground Navigational Aids Technician and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Technology from Wayland Baptist University. Kevin’s inspiration for becoming an author is the moment he learned of a dark family tragedy in his family’s history. His grandfather changed the family name in 1920 to cover this terrible truth and took the secret to his grave. Kevin wrote Heart of Steel: Based on a True Story to honor his grandfather and share this story of inspiration and triumph. The book became a #1 Best Seller on Amazon in November of 2019 and is in the process of becoming a feature film. White Skies Black Mingo, is Historical Fiction inspired by the love of his great-great-grandparents. Margaret Davis, was from Mingo Country West Virginia and was a proud member of the Haudenosaunee Nation. His great-great-grandfather, Charles Flagg, Sr., was a veteran of the Civil War and served in the 63rd Infantry Regiment of Pennsylvania in the Union Army. Their love was the inspiration for the tale set in the darkest period of American history, the Civil War. Kevin lives in Southern California with his wife and daughters, who are pursuing careers in acting while they attend school. Kevin and his wife, Annette, are parents of a blended family of nine children and twenty-one grandchildren.
