NFL fashion editor Kyle Smith: 'It would be a miss' for fashion to ignore the sports opportunity

In the fall of 2024, the NFL hired its first fashion editor, Kyle Smith. The timing felt right, considering the increasing number of fashion and sports collaborations that had rolled out in the months prior, fueled in part by the Summer Olympics. There was also the growing interest in “tunnel fits,” thanks to social media providing more access to athletes' lives off the field. Smith joined the NFL with a fashion resume that included writing for magazines, doing brand PR and styling under Karla Welch.  For this week's episode of the Glossy Podcast, Smith joined host Jill Manoff to discuss the influence of athletes' style, the current fashion-sports relationship and the responsibilities he has in his new role. He also recaps his recent trips to international fashion weeks and shares his process for styling his clients, including Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

I can be afraid, but I do it anyway."On my latest Firestarters podcast, I'm talking with CEO, stylist, and activist Karla Welch. Not only is Karla one of the most powerful stylists alive, but she's also the co-founder of sustainable period underwear company Period and the non-profit, The Period Abundance Foundation, and a longtime social activist. She is a true force for good in this world and, together with her husband, has leveraged collaborations and partnerships to raise over a million dollars for organizations supporting things like gun safety, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, trans rights, birth control, climate change, racial equality, and more.I wanted to learn more about the inspiration behind Karla's creativity, what it's like to be over age 50 in an image-conscious industry, and how she's surmounted the obstacles she's faced during her long career. Dinner for Shoes is a podcast hosted by Sarah Wasilak, a fashion and food enthusiast with her mouth full. With appearances by her cats, Trish and Kit, and agendas that almost always go to shit, we aim to dive into a discussion about fashion and style and break some bread in each episode.  In episode 18, Ayame + Award Season Trends, Sarah names her favorite celebrity red carpet looks from the Golden Globes, Governor Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and Emmys. She also discusses trends she's spotting, with input from celebrity stylists Tara Swennen (whose clients include Ali Wong and Kristen Stewart) and Mark Avery (who dresses Ryan Gosling). Crucial to award season for all fashion lovers is the team behind Check the Tag, who also answered some questions for Dinner for Shoes about how they ID celebrity outfits at lightning speed on award show night. Sarah enjoys sashimi salad from Ayame Sushi in Hoboken, since it was revealed that Chef Nobu prepared the same dish for the 81st annual Golden Globe Award attendees. To no one's surprise, Kit got a taste of the spicy mayo… and then some.   Dinner for Shoes podcast episodes are released weekly on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple. When Karla Welch and Clea O'Hana launched fashion styling app Wishi in 2019, the idea was to democratize the fashion styling experience, which is usually reserved for celebs. “Karla's dream was to bring styling to everyone,” O'Hana said, on the latest Glossy Podcast. “It's a great partnership -- because I had the technology and the business idea, but I didn't have the styling or the fashion part of it…[Together] we're replicating the relationship that she has with her clients, online.”  Welch has 20 years of experience as a stylist; her clients to date have included Justin Bieber, Tracee Ellis Ross and Karlie Kloss, among others. Meanwhile, O'Hana's background is in business and finance, though she's worked in merchandising for fashion companies including Net-a-Porter and Belstaff.  In February, Wishi secured a partnership with Farfetch, granting the retailer's high-spend loyalty members access to Wishi's styling services. (Typically, clients pay Wishi $40 to be styled in two looks and $90 for five looks -- stylists are not paid on commission.) Thus far, the partnership has revealed some interesting data points. For one, customers who take advantage of the service are returning fewer items.  “When you're shopping for yourself, and you don't have the eye or the confidence, or you're not sure [about] the fit, you overbuy, and then you send things back,” said Welch. “It's a huge waste environmentally, and it's really damaging to a lot of businesses.” Wishi is getting the word out about its services via its Style Council of stylists, who promote their bookings. It also invests in digital marketing and Google search. “[However] people are looking for this service now; there's really a lot of demand,” said O'Hana. “We don't have any problem marketing it.”

Named one of Hollywood's Top 10 Power Stylists of the decade, Karla Welch showed up to Catt's bedroom looking enviably cozy chic. Down-to-earth and passionate, Karla is the woman behind some of your favorite celebrity looks - from Olivia Wilde to Busy Philipps and Justin Bieber - she has dressed them all. But being a revered stylist is a lot more than putting together an outfit; Karla's distinct approach involves creating looks for each celebrity that represent the best version of themselves. From designing 'fits for Justin Bieber's tour, to the logistical chaos that takes place behind-the-scenes while prepping for the Oscars, Karla spills all. She also opens up about her personal life - like how she first met her husband while she was working as a server at a restaurant in Canada, and how she credits her parents for her rigorous work ethic. Karla also shares how she's been using her power to advocate for causes she believes in -- like through her collaboration with Levi's that raised money for gun control and her spicy IG posts.  Also in this episode, Catt reminisces about what it was like to work with a stylist (for the first time ever!) when she landed at E!, after years of styling herself on local broadcast TV. Karla and Catt also swap stories about the one and only... Oprah!

In this week’s episode of Monocycle, unofficially called Bicycle every time I have an interview subject, Karla Welch — celebrity stylist to the likes of Ruth Negga, Karlie Kloss, Justin Bieber, Olivia Wilde, Tracee Ellis Ross and so on and so forth — shares a number of important facts that are as revealing as they are sentimental. At one point, when I try to prod on how she manages burn out, she rejects my assertion that everyone experiences burn out, proclaims perennial gratefulness for her role in Hollywood (she is originally from Canada, and moved to L.A. not for work, but for love) and suggests that perhaps those who burn out don’t yet quite have strong enough relationships with themselves manufactured to perfection. “I never have FOMO because I like my own company,” she said. Enjoy a listen and should you feel so inclined, do too, buy a t-shirt from her remarkably successful collaboration with Hanes. Amelia gushed about them earlier this fall. I’m just going to say co-sign.
