Clinical trials are vital to offering and developing the most effective treatment options. However, there are large disparities in enrollment across race, ethnicity, geography, and type of cancer care center. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge, LA uses local partnerships, culturally tailored outreach, and workforce innovation to drive sustainable and equitable participation in clinical trials. Minorities now make up 21% of their clinical trial participation, surpassing the national average. Following these meaningful gains in attracting local minority populations and underserved communities to take part in clinical trials, the Mary Bird Perkins research team received a grant to further support this work. In this episode of CANCER BUZZ, Victor Lin, MD, PhD, research medical director at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, shares strategies for success in their community, including awareness campaigns and partnerships. CANCER BUZZ also speaks with TaeJeanne “TJ” Taylor-Lawrence, RN, registered nurse and patient navigator, about building relationships and supporting patients in clinical trials.     “We really, really have to be thinking, from a trial design standpoint, about the barriers that we're throwing up in the name of trying to keep the science and the data clean.” - Victor Lin, MD, PhD    “There's been this long-standing perception that cancer clinical trials are really the domain of only academic cancer centers. But I think increasingly we're finding that ... community cancer centers can be more nimble and are perfectly capable of running the same trials and seeing these patients where they live.” - Victor Lin, MD, PhD    “I think that representation builds trust. If people don't see themselves in this process, whether it's in the data, whether it's in the staff, or any of the outreach programs that we have, they're just less likely to believe that this is for them. In my community, black and brown communities especially, I think there's a deep need to feel seen, respected, and understood. When a patient sees someone that looks like them or shares their background talking about clinical trials, I think that that shifts the energy.” - TaeJeanne “TJ” Taylor-Lawrence, RN    “If the research does not reflect all of us, the solutions won't either.” - TaeJeanne “TJ” Taylor-Lawrence, RN    Victor Lin, MD, PhD Research Medical Director Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Baton Rouge, LA   TaeJeanne “TJ” Taylor-Lawrence, RN Registered Nurse Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Baton Rouge, LA   Resources: ACCC Community Oncology Research Institute (ACORI) Bringing Cancer Research to the Community:  Strategic Approaches to Representative Oncology Clinical Trial Design Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Receives $400,000 Grant to Continue Expansion of Nationally-Recognized Clinical Trials Program

Iowa City and GovEx collaborate to solve a problem: How do you gather ridership data without fares?--- In the latest episode of the Data Points podcast, GovEx and Iowa City staff about collaborative efforts to track bus ridership for a free-fare program aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Iowa City is a participant of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative Data Track, a program aimed at connecting cities with coaches and data practitioners to build data skills and techniques to tackle complex challenges and improve residents' quality of life.---Iowa City bus ridership dropped precipitously during the pandemic and had not rebounded, leading the city to consider shifting to a free-fare program to increase ridership and help the city reach its goal of reduced carbon emissions. But, without fares to count, the city struggled to find a way to track ridership for a free-fare program to help it determine whether the increased ridership was having the desired impact. Rachel Bloom, the GovEx coach working with Iowa City, consulted GovEx data analyst Maeve Mulholland, who presented the city with a creative solution that leveraged data the city was already collecting.--- Since moving forward with its free-fare program, the city has used data to show an increased bus ridership of 40% - compared with a 10% post-pandemic increase nationwide - and a reduction in tailpipe carbon emissions by approximately 284 metric tons. It is now using an analysis of timing and location data to gain further insight into the program and to increase equity in access to public transportation.--- Learn more about Iowa City's Fare Free Pilot Program--- Learn more about GovEx--- Learn more about the Bloomberg Harvard Leadership Initiative

If you're providing therapy or tutoring services, contracting with schools, or offering professional development to K-12 professionals, you won't want to miss this episode. As someone who has explored the possibility of school contracts, I'm always looking to learn more about how school leaders make decisions regarding budgets and staffing. I grew up in the Chicago area; which meant I lived in a community with an abundance of organizations, transportation systems, and districts with a variety of programming options. But when I relocated to a different part of the state, I found that the communities around me were way different than where I'd grown up. While there are several large districts near me, the surrounding communities were smaller, with fewer resources. Public transportation can be minimal, if it exists at all; which makes it difficult for certain families to access medical and therapy services. Some communities don't have stop lights, let alone grocery stores or daycare centers. This makes it difficult for families to give kids a variety of experiences.School districts face similar challenges, because they're less able to liaise with community organizations for field trips, after school programs, or educational placements for students needing special education. Serving high-needs populations becomes a challenge because many districts don't have experts on-staff to conduct evaluations and provide specialized services. This means paying for outside consultants, service providers, and transportation fees for out-of-district placements. As a result, special education budgets for small districts can become unmanageable, putting school leaders in a very difficult situation. Cutting budgets can be devastating to all parties involved.Students may lose access to services, or at the very least need to switch providers.District staff have the burden of providing additional services or wearing multiple hats, adding additional responsibilities to their already full plates. What people don't often realize is the emotional impact this has on the leaders who carry the burden of making these difficult decisions.  I often see negative comments about school leaders on various influencer accounts or in discussion groups. It can be very “us vs. them”. A lot of finger-pointing and assumptions about people in jobs that have an extremely high turnover rate (eg., directors, principals, superintendents). But I've yet to interact with a school leader who didn't care about helping kids. That's why I was so excited to talk with Chris Dodge, who's had experience leading in both rural and urban districts. As lead learner in elementary school settings for ten years and currently the principal at the Thorndyke Road School is Worcester, MA, Chris works to create collaborative structures and systems that bring stakeholder voice into school level decision making, as well as strategies that promote student success and achievement. His schools utilize these systems to promote a vision of serving the whole child, ensuring that students' social-emotional and academic needs are being met. Most notably, in 2014, Christopher led the Dexter Park School in Orange, MA to become a MA Department of Education appointed Innovation School, awarded for its inclusionary practice work. Aside from the role as principal, Christopher has served on DESE's Principal/Teacher Advisory Cabinet, Commissioner Riley's Return to School Teaching and Learning Working Group during COVID19, as well as on the MSAA (Massachusetts School Administrators Association) Executive Board. In this conversation, Chris shares common, but misunderstood barriers to school success that are prevalent in rural communities. He shares:✅Why transportation issues cause barriers to community engagement, educational placements, field trips, and instructional programming. ✅Challenges small districts face when hiring contractors and consultants, and professional development providers.✅Why districts cancel contracts with service providers and consultants, even when they have a strong working relationship.✅What school leaders look for when selecting a contractor or professional development provider for their staff.✅Why getting leadership training (e.g., degrees, certificates, experience) can be an asset to you, even if you don't see yourself as a school administratorYou can connect with Chris on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/principaldodge1/, on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/PrincipalDodge1, and on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-dodge-a33343204/ In this episode, I mention my free training called, “How to be Evidence-Based and Neurodiversity-Affirming (by Supporting Executive Functioning)”. In this episode of Work in Progress, I discuss increasing access to capital for Latino entrepreneurs with Isabella Casillas Guzman, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and Nina Vaca, the founder and CEO of Pinnacle Group, a global IT staffing agency. I sat down with Guzman and Vaca at the Aspen Latino Business Summit in Washington, D.C. in early September. Small businesses are driving economic growth across the nation, according to the SBA's Guzman, noting more that 13.1 million applications from entrepreneurs wanting to start a new company. It might surprise you who is starting those companies. “What we're seeing is that women and people of color are propelling that growth, starting businesses at really high rates," says Guzman. “There are over 5 million Latino businesses here in this country creating jobs, creating products that are boosting our economic output. They have a 2.8 nearly trillion dollar impact in our economy, overall.” Despite being at the lead of the small business boom, Guzman says investment in this community's entrepreneurs has, typically, lagged. And, she says, that is hurting those business creators and the economy. “We're really tracking the changing face of entrepreneurship…to make sure that they have the tools to succeed because they have historic underinvestment that has limited their growth. And we need to change that if we want to see our economy grow into the future.” Guzman tells me that many of the entrepreneurs are credit-worthy but are being shut out when it comes to getting the financial capital they need to start up and to grow. "If they don't get those loans then that means they're not creating jobs, they're not creating the output. Maybe they're not going to trade abroad in a new country. All that limits economic activity and limits opportunity for all." She points out that the SBA was created 70 years ago to fill capital gaps through lending programs, investment programs, and to propel and direct the federal spending around R&D to innovation grants to small businesses. "We need to do that with equity in mind to ensure that we're reaching and serving and creating access to everyone," Guzman concludes. WorkingNation's Ramona Schindelheim interviews Isabella Casillas Guzman and Nina Vaca at the Aspen Latino Business Summit 2023 in September. Pinnacle Group's Vaca echoes Guzman, “It is clear that the Latino community is impacting America in a variety of ways, but in entrepreneurship in a very meaningful way. Thirty-four percent (34%) of the new businesses are started by Latinas and women of color. The contributions that we're making to the American economy are clear.” Despite those contributions, Vaca says growth is a challenge. “While there are many Latina-owned businesses in this country, less than 10% of them are actually scaling in a very meaningful way. And capital isn't just one challenge. It's access to capital, but also access to contracts.” She continues, “Government is an opportunity for contracts, so is corporate America. I think corporate America can play a very important role getting their supply chains acquainted with these HBEs, these Hispanic business enterprises that are out there. Because while many of them are small, there's also scaled global mature Hispanic businesses as well.” For Vaca, supporting her community is a passion. “I am spending a lot of my time advocating to the Latina, Latino community that business is an incredible place to be – not just STEM and technology – but business.” “Business is for everyone, and it's absolutely for Latinas. When I look at the level of Latinas that are in the C-suite, or in executive roles, or on boards, I don't get mad. I get motivated because we need to give awareness to our young next generation how powerful business can be.” You can hear much more from Guzman of the SBA and Vaca of Pinnacle Group on how to increase access to capital for Latino entrepreneur...

"COVAX and World Bank to Accelerate Vaccine Access for Developing Countries," trumpets a World Bank press release. "How AI Is Making Healthcare More Affordable And Accessible," announces Forbes magazine. "How technology is helping improve financial inclusion around the world," reports CNBC.   It's a linguistic frame that appears regularly in media, PR, and policymaking. Those who can't afford the top-tier forms of basic necessities like housing or physical and mental healthcare, we're told, can have "access" to less expensive, lower-quality versions. Enter bottom-rung ACA marketplace plans, less effective COVID vaccines, homeless people living in train containers, scammy cryptocurrency apps, and clunky chatbot "therapists." After all, they're better than the alternative: having no healthcare, housing, or income at all.   But why must having nothing at all be the only alternative? Why isn't it possible to ensure high-quality essentials for everyone? And how does media's repackaging of substandard necessities as "increasing access" and fostering "inclusion" serve to make the barbarism of austerity politics seem palatable, even benevolent?   On this episode, our season seven premiere, we'll examine the trope of framing subpar material essentials as forms of "inclusion" for the poor or "increasing access" to important life saving and sustaining needs, exploring how media simply accept, rather than challenge, the manufactured austerity that allows this cruel stratification in the first place.   Our guest is writer, artist and pod host Beatrice Adler-Bolton.
