Outside of the academics and activists whose ideology came to dominate the West in the second decade of the twenty-first century, arguably no group influenced public discourse as much as the Intellectual Dark Web. Challenging the intellectual and cultural orthodoxies that engulfed universities, the media, and big tech, this group—a loose collective of politically diverse intellectuals, commentators, and scholars critical of political correctness, identity politics, and cancel culture—relied on alternative platforms like podcasts, digital magazines, and YouTube to promote free speech, universal rights, and individual liberty. While the term is most commonly identified with Sam Harris, Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, Bret and Eric Weinstein, and Joe Rogan, the group's concerns and philosophy extended more broadly to include a wide range of individuals who helped mainstream critiques of “woke” culture and a robust defense of free speech, including Steven Pinker, Michael Shermer, Jonathan Haidt, Dave Rubin, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and Stephen Fry. The Intellectual Dark Web's coherence began to unravel in the early 2020s due to internal differences (such as over the response to COVID-19 and climate change), and its full legacy and historical impact are yet to be determined. Jamie Roberts is a lecturer in the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney. His new book is The Intellectual Dark Web: A History (and Possible Future).

Animals such as grizzly bears and Arctic ground squirrels have evolved the ability to hibernate as a way to survive winter months of extreme cold. During hibernation, their core body temperatures drop and their heart rates and metabolic activities slow to conserve energy. They also consume less oxygen during this inactivity.    But what if you could make non-hibernating species – including humans - hibernate? How could you control hibernation as a therapy to help people recover from strokes or heart attacks, or administer it to astronauts to help them endure a yearslong trip to Mars? Scientists at Oregon Health & Science University have embarked on a first step to exploring these questions by inducing a state of hibernation in rats, which don’t normally hibernate. Joining us to discuss this research is Domenico Tupone, a research assistant professor of neurology at OHSU.

The Renaissance Center has been at the center of Detroit's skyline since the 1970s - and it's a building with a fascinating past, present, and future.  With General Motors moving out and going to two floors of the Hudson's Detroit up Woodward Avenue, in the next year GM and Bedrock will be working together to try to find new uses for the 5.5 million square foot complex that today is mostly offices and a hotel. I felt like we should learn a bit more about the building, and talk about way to not only redevelop it, but connect it to the rest of the city of Detroit. I say "connect" because the initial design was very intentionally separated from the rest of the city. Through a number of interior redesigns, the RenCen of today is quite different than what was built. And what we see going forward? Might be quite a bit different than today - even on the outside. To talk about the history, what's going on now and the future? The Transport Research Arena is taking place in the RDS this week, where experts will discuss the future of travel and what more we could be doing in Ireland. To speak more on the topic is EY's Global Transport Leader, Tony Canavan, who joins Jonathan.

Since the October 7, 2023 invasion and massacre of 1200 Israeli's, Elliot Chodoff has been providing analysis for the military. With over 134 hostages still captive by Hamas in Gaza, a few of them are Americans. Elliot says there real number is near half. He claims they were murdered without dispute. These “brutal murders” took over 200 hostages originally, and the IDF rescued some. Others were killed. Elliot says these Hamas type organizations draw their ideological roots from Naziasm via an Islam brotherhood in Egypt. Their stated purpose is to destroy Israel and annihilate the Jewish people. “Pardon us,” he says, “But we don't want to be wiped out!” Elliot points to the attack by ISIS that killed over 120 Russians at a theater in Moscow. ISIS was almost totally eradicated by Donald Trump but, the few that remained came to do harm is Russia.” This is why “we must totally defeat Hamas,” siting what happened in Moscow. Elliot reports Israel has killed over 15,000 Hamas or Islamic Jihad terrorists. Israel has ‘taken out' 18 out of 24 Hamas battalions. The 6 left out of 24 are not their ‘crack' battalions remain, but are much smaller in scale. He would not disclosed when the remaining will be destroyed. In one hospital in Gaza City, the IDF pulled 1000 terrorists, dead and alive, out of a Gaza City hospital. Elliot emphases that the delay in finishing-off the war is directly related to their humanitarian efforts in not taking innocent lives on either side. Warfare experts say Israel's military has operated brilliantly at saving innocent lives as they surgically crush Hamas terrorists. According to the rules of the Geneva Convention, Israel has complied with the rules and has done an exceptional job at minimizing collateral damage. Senator Chuck Schumer's comments to call an election to remove Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Elliot is appalled that Schumer would get involved in Israel's politics. Elliot says that for Schumer to suggest that the USA hold back funding to Israel when at war is something not done to a friend and ally. 400,000 Israeli Reservists were on call and active since October 7th attack. When Israeli reservists were pulled out of Gaza these soldiers did not want to go home until the “job was done”. He says Israel will wrap-up its attack on Hamas in 2 months. Hamas will no longer be a military factor.
