Are you tired of working in settings that don't serve you and your clients the way you need? In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Kelsey Brown, a Start and Grow Your Private Practice student, to talk about her journey as an SLP and why she decided to do things differently and start her own private practice. Kelsey shares how she started to lay the groundwork for leaving her job, exactly how she's making more money and working less, and how she's built stability into her income by filling a school contract and doing sessions while she builds her private pay caseload. Kelsey is a great example of a young and talented SLP who refused to get caught up in working in settings that didn't serve her or her clients and is instead creating her own systems and life through her private practice.Kelsey Brown (she/her) is a DC-based speech-language pathologist by day and children's book author ("Come On, Calm," 2019) by night, weekend, and summer. She has undergraduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Theatre from The University of Georgia and a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Emerson College. Kelsey's love for speech therapy started when she was 14 years old and she's been interested in working with individuals with complex communication needs since her first introduction to assistive technology her freshman year at UGA (she later completed a certificate program in Instructional Design and Technology). Kelsey's experience includes working with and learning from the folks at St. Coletta of Greater Washington, Boston Children's Hospital, the Access Champions podcast, Imagination Stage, Soaring Starts Early Learning & Arts, and Camp Twin Lakes. Her theatre and teaching artist background help to inspire fun and motivating client-centered sessions in a naturalistic environment: your home or community space. While she was leading school-based teletherapy sessions during the first year of the pandemic, Kelsey enjoyed the close relationship she built with her students' families. In both in-person and virtual speech, language, and literacy sessions, Kelsey builds caregiver coaching into every session. Kelsey Brown specializes in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), emergent literacy, early intervention, and gestalt language processing. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Kelsey's experience as a new SLPHow Kelsey found confidence in herself as a clinicianWhen she decided to go into private practiceHow Kelsey built up her private caseloadThe power of building relationships with other professionalsThe happiness Kelsey feels now that she is a private practitionerHow Kelsey structures her work day in her private practiceThe basics of what you need to start a private practiceThe book that Kelsey wrote and how she achieved itI hope you enjoyed this conversation with Kelsey! I love how committed she is to gaining knowledge and experience and then implementing it to change the lives of those around her while changing her own life. She may have started slowly, but laying that groundwork allowed her to quit her job when the time was right and she hasn't looked back. The private practice movement is gaining momentum and it's time for you to be a part of it. Come On, Calm! is a wonderful, interactive book that is not just a story, it's a therapeutic experience when reading it with your child. I love supporting other speech-language pathologists in their journey in writing children's books since we have such a unique perspective with regard to neurodiversity. Come On, Calm! written by Kelsey Brown and illustrated by Joseph Wrightson is a picture book published by Mascot Books that embeds calming strategies for young children. The book was originally written as a poem by the author. It focuses on specific vocabulary and action words with step-by-step ideas for self or co-regulation. Come On, Calm! embeds language such as emotional vocabulary (e.g. nervous, excited) with strategies such as "sniffing", "squeezing", "zipping", "brushing" and much more. The book is beautifully illustrated and bursts with energy! I love how the book naturally embeds movement and a multi-sensory experience. When reading this book, practice the different movements with your child and/or student. Work on print awareness by pointing to the words in the book and doing consistent check-ins with feelings. This book also helps children understand what "calm" means. Listen to our podcast above to learn more about tips from Kelsey! To learn more about Kelsey, visit my website here.

"In my experience, what I've found is more of a gentle parenting, respectful parenting approach seems to work best. And really helping them build that feeling vocabulary, and helping them manage their emotions through the use of strategies. So really ultimately what we want is these kiddos to be able to get to a place of internally managing their emotions like we do as adults, but of course, developmentally appropriate."

Jeannie and Adam discuss how lack of transparent pricing harms your business and what you can do to stop feeding into the “norm” of hidden fees without jeopardizing your sales. Better customer experiences through transparent pricing Have you ever paid way more than you expected at the end of an online purchase? Or perhaps you’ve received an invoice with vague or unexplained fees that blew your budget to shreds. Doesn’t this drive you bananas? Well, we’ve got news for you: Your customers don’t feel any better about it than you do. “They keep it from you because it makes it look like they have the lowest price available…” -Kelsey Brown While we all know hidden fees make for a terrible (and costly!) experience, misleading practices around pricing are everywhere. In fact, customers resent these sales tactics, and they’ve had enough. “What most people want in most areas of their life is to be told the truth.” -Kelsey Brown So we’re delighted to bring Kelsey Brown to the mic! The Outreach Manager for People for Honest Pricing, Kelsey says hidden fees and dishonest pricing doesn’t just hurt customers. In fact, these widespread practices lead to high churn rates, abandoned shopping carts, and eventually, a poor brand image. What’s more, the companies that suffer the most are the ones who’ve found ways to justify their lack of transparency and claim their hidden fees aren’t hidden at all. Kelsey is here to share ways to eliminate hidden pricing from your customer experience and build a better business around honesty. But you must understand what hidden pricing really is, and why it exists in the first place. We cover all of this and more in the interview! “Create a conversation about these hidden fees that isn’t taking place right now.” -Kelsey Brown Bonus: We know you’ve been duped by dishonest pricing before, so what can you do as a consumer to fight back? Kelsey shares 4 easy ways to let companies know this is not OK and help pave the way for a more transparent future. Listen in! Interview Highlights Most organizations would claim they have no hidden fees, so what’s the definition of hidden fees? And why are they so nefarious? [3:15] What is the basis for hidden fees? Moreover, why do companies get away with this? [5:10] Changing how we do business is one thing, but how can we fight back as consumers? Sometimes we need to change or add fees in a short time. What are some best practices for that? [14:15] I’d like to be more honest about pricing, so how can I start an evaluation process? [15:45] About our guest Before joining People for Honest Pricing, Kelsey was a marketing professional at a software company creating content for their online presence. Armed with a degree in journalism and several years of digital marketing experience, she made an industry switch from software to the world of e-commerce where she now leads the public relations and outreach strategy for a promotional products company. Kelsey met the Co-Founders of People for Honest Pricing after beginning her new role and quickly realized they shared a mutual frustration regarding hidden fees. It didn’t take much time for her to be brought on board as the Outreach Manager for People for Honest Pricing where she is now spreading the word about their cause. The goal of People for Honest Pricing is to start a conversation about pricing transparency when it comes to shopping online. Business owners may also apply for their free certification program where a team of volunteers evaluates their pricing strategy, and upon approval, supplies the applicant with a free badge to display on their website. By displaying this certification badge on their website, business owners are showing their customers that they’re more than just a number. Being raised in a catholic school system Kelsey faced a lot of internal demons when it comes to the idea of never bearing her own children. Kelsey is the first intersex individual I have ever spoke to, voice to voice! Hearing her story gave me goosebumps.
