Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Man Sentenced to Life for Armed Robbery of Canton Jewelry Store Erin Stephon Arms, 40, has been sentenced to life without parole for the 2013 armed robbery of a Canton jewelry store. The crime occurred on November 22, 2013, when Arms, wearing a mask and gloves, robbed the Cartersville Jewelry Exchange with a silver handgun, stealing over $50,000 in jewelry. He fled in a stolen Ford F-150, later linked to the crime through advanced DNA technology. The trial, held in December 2023, included testimony from 12 witnesses and 80 exhibits. The prosecution highlighted Arms' recidivist history, leading to the maximum sentence. Victims expressed ongoing trauma, and Arms is prohibited from contacting them. STORY 2: Canton Woman Convicted of Leaving Puppies to Die Sentenced Amber Higdon, 31, of Canton, has been sentenced to 10 years, with two years in confinement, after pleading guilty to seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. The charges arose from a July 27, 2023 incident where Higdon abandoned seven puppies in a pink tote on the side of the road, leading to their deaths from heat exposure. The puppies, left without food, water, or shelter, died of pulmonary edema, hemorrhage, and cardiac arrest. Higdon admitted to the act, expecting someone else to find the puppies. The court imposed various conditions, including prohibiting her from owning or contacting animals during probation. Co-defendant Ashley Vernon received five years of probation for her role. STORY 3: Cherokee County to Vote on $415M Budget Oct. 1 ****09.21.24 HARRY JOHNSON*** Cherokee County's proposed $415.7 million budget for FY2025, starting October 1, reflects an increase of over $15 million from the amended FY2024 budget. Public safety accounts for 54.1% of the operational budget, with judicial expenses at 20.5% and general administration at 15.3%. The budget anticipates 32 new positions, including 21 fire and EMS roles. Capital funds are set at $100.9 million, with significant investments in public works, courthouse expansion, and fire department projects. The proposed budget maintains a millage rate of 5.153 mills for operations and 2.888 mills for fire services, supporting full staffing for fire stations. The board will vote on the budget on October 1. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Back in a moment. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Here's What's Next for Construction on Neese Road in Woodstock The Neese Road Infrastructure Improvement Project in Woodstock is progressing with three phases. The first phase, focused on the intersection with Highway 92, is complete. The current phase, from Highway 92 to Washington Avenue, includes road straightening, utility realignments, and water and sewer upgrades, and is set to finish by the second quarter of 2025. The third phase, beginning in the first quarter of 2025, will extend from Washington Avenue to Arnold Mill Road, incorporating a roundabout at Washington Avenue. The entire project aims for completion by fall 2026, featuring a new multi-use trail along Neese Road from Highway 92 to Arnold Mill Road. STORY 5: Woodstock Author Publishes Children's Book Woodstock resident Deann Benedict has published a children's book titled "Escape from the Mutt Motel," illustrated by Walter Policelli and released by Mascot Books. The story follows three dogs, Weezy, Lucy, and Boomer, as they try to escape the rundown Mutt Motel. The book encourages children to advocate for animals, promoting responsibility and kindness toward them. Proceeds from the book benefit local animal charities, with Orphan Annie Rescue currently selected. Benedict, inspired by her rescue schnauzer Weezy, hopes to instill a love for animals in young readers. "Escape from the Mutt Motel" is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and distributed by APG, Ingram, and others. Commercial: INGLES 1 STORY 6: Gas Station and Retail Store Coming to Southeast Cherokee The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the zoning change for a gas station and retail store on Arnold Mill Road. The decision rezones approximately 4.085 acres from office and institutional to general commercial, with a variance for grading within the undisturbed buffer. The approval passed 4-1, with Chair Harry Johnston opposing, citing concerns about the alignment with the county's land use plan and preference for neighborhood commercial zoning. Commissioner Weatherby supported the change, citing historical zoning issues. Conditions include operating hours from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., restricted trash pickup, and replanting the buffer with dense vegetation. The development will include a 6,400 square-foot convenience store with gas pumps and a 2,000 square-foot retail building. STORY 7: Vincent Named Week 5 Player of the Week Sam Vincent of River Ridge has been named Cherokee County Player of the Week after an impressive performance in a 45-3 victory over Pope. Vincent excelled both offensively and defensively, scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass and securing two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 20-yard touchdown. His contributions helped the Knights hold Pope to just three points and extend their winning streak to four games, during which they have consistently scored over 40 points. With River Ridge averaging 35.4 points per game, they are enjoying one of the best offensive stretches in program history as they prepare to face Sequoyah after the fall break. We'll have closing comments after this. COMMERCIAL: Heller 2 SIGN OFF – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast. In this episode, Host Annette Hines has a great conversation with Anthony (Tony) Delauney about how to have family financial conversations and teach kids early about how to use money wisely. Anthony is a financial advisor, franchise business owner, and author of several financial education books, including three in the Owning the Dash series. His books include Applying the Mindset of a Fitness Master to the Art of Family Financial Planning (2019), The No-Regrets Retirement Roadmap (2021), and children's picture books Dash and Nikki and the Jellybean Game (2021), Lilly and May Learn Why Mom and Dad Work (2022) with more titles forthcoming. Passionate about supporting growing families, Anthony's children's books help families find ways to discuss topics about money management including important lessons such as being patient in your decisions, helping one another, risk vs. reward, and the importance of earning and budgeting. He and Annette discuss the concept of gambling in his 2023 book, Rohan and Nyra and Big Sister's Bet, and how he received comments from some readers about whether or not this subject is appropriate to introduce to children. However, the issues of greed, constantly wanting more, and allowing our emotions to guide our behaviors are essential for kids to reflect on as these elements impact our lives in more situations in which risk is involved. Anthony asserts that it's essential to talk openly with children and help guide them early on about how to make thoughtful choices. You can find Anthony Delauney's books at Mascot Books, Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Simply put, Mike Westhoff is the greatest special teams coach in National Football League history. Sharp-witted, creative, and intensely focused, Westhoff spent 32 years working alongside and learning from some of the legends of the sport—including Don Shula, Dan Marino, Bear Bryant, and Woody Hayes—while revolutionizing the most misunderstood phase of the game. Over the course of 657 games, primarily with the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins, Westhoff was a relentless innovator—constantly figuring out new ways to help the individual skills of hundreds of players surface and develop. Interviews with dozens of his contemporaries and former players such as Sean Payton, Taysom Hill, and Zach Thomas provide a rare glimpse of NFL life beyond the field—inside the offices, meeting rooms, and locker rooms with one of the game's most unforgettable personalities. But his story isn't just about football. Westhoff also shares intimate details of his multiple battles with cancer and the life lessons learned through the fights. In Figure It Out: My Thirty-Two-Year Journey While Revolutionizing Pro Football's Special Teams (Mascot Books, 2022), Westhoff presents his one-of-a-kind experiences and unfiltered views in his trademark style—a refreshing blend of honest (sometimes brutally so), funny, and poignant. His deep insights into the workings of special teams—illustrated by 27 detailed original diagrams—and timely commentary on the current state of pro football reveal a critical side of the sport that very few truly understand. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. "Philadelphia Author Publishes Spiritual Memoir About the Power of Miracles" "Philadelphia Author Publishes Spiritual Memoir About the Power of Miracles" Herndon, VA; March 2, 2021: Mascot Books announces the release of The Divine Language of Coincidence: How Miracles Transformed My Life After I Began Paying Attention written by Sophia Demas. Although many people experience coincidences and serendipitous events, the prodigious number of miracles that had happened to Sophia Demas was indeed remarkable. Sophia identified the common denominator that had precipitated each miracle, and decided that sharing that discovery by writing a book was the most natural thing to do. Sophia Demas did not want to get married, have children, or write a book; the Universe, however, had other plans. In this penetrating memoir, Sophia examines the events in her life that at first seemed to be a series of coincidences, but upon further consideration were building blocks of the miraculous. The Divine Language of Coincidence chronicles the extraordinary events experienced by an ordinary woman, asserting that miracles are not only possible, but far more common than we may realize. Sophia has enjoyed three diverse careers: a decade in architecture that included working with notable 20th century visionary Dr. R. Buckminster Fuller, running her own couture fashion business, and working as a mental health therapist in private practice. She also created Living a Fearless Life, a twelve-workshop program designed to help society's most at-risk women increase their self-esteem, which was piloted in the Philadelphia Prison System and implemented with groups of ex-trafficked and ex-homeless women and women in recovery. Writing a book was never on Sophia's radar, but once she realized the truth about her miracles, she knew she had to tell the world. Today's episode is a special one as it's the official launch date of my book, UN-HINGED What I Learned from Saying, "It's You, It's Not Me" in the NYC Dating Scene. I am using this episode as a solo and celebratory one to honor this big moment in my life. I read my preface of my book to give viewers and listeners a snippet of what to expect from my book, what my writing style is, what my author's voice is and understand why I decided to write this book. I also reveal a confession relating to being proud of myself and learning to embrace that feeling and changing it from discomfort to comfort. I close out the episode with a section from my conclusion in the hopes to get you thinking about what's on your bucket list and fear list and how to overcome self doubt and go after your dreams. I would love any and all support in this journey that I am on. You can purchase my book using this specific link https://amzn.to/3Ko7XdL or go to www.un-hinged.com. Come On, Calm! is a wonderful, interactive book that is not just a story, it's a therapeutic experience when reading it with your child. I love supporting other speech-language pathologists in their journey in writing children's books since we have such a unique perspective with regard to neurodiversity. Come On, Calm! written by Kelsey Brown and illustrated by Joseph Wrightson is a picture book published by Mascot Books that embeds calming strategies for young children. The book was originally written as a poem by the author. It focuses on specific vocabulary and action words with step-by-step ideas for self or co-regulation. Come On, Calm! embeds language such as emotional vocabulary (e.g. nervous, excited) with strategies such as "sniffing", "squeezing", "zipping", "brushing" and much more. The book is beautifully illustrated and bursts with energy! I love how the book naturally embeds movement and a multi-sensory experience. When reading this book, practice the different movements with your child and/or student. Work on print awareness by pointing to the words in the book and doing consistent check-ins with feelings. This book also helps children understand what "calm" means. Listen to our podcast above to learn more about tips from Kelsey! To learn more about Kelsey, visit my website here.

The Read with Carylee Show brings the love of literature to children and gives a peek behind the scenes by evoking the joy of reading, helping children interact with authors, and displaying the hidden talent of these authors who may be living in your community. This episode will read The Christmas Blanket with Ed Damiano. ✅ ABOUT THE STORY: Follow the unforgettable story of EJ and his mom as they travel to see the Christmas tree lighting of the Rockefeller Center. An adventure that taught him the most important lesson, EJ completely understood that it's not the gifts one receives but the essence of learning how to share with strangers in need that makes this season special and worthwhile. Author Ed Damiano shares that he wrote this in 2017 and sat on it for four years until it was published. Every year, Ed takes his family to enjoy Christmas in the city. Visiting the tree at Rockefeller Center was always the highlight of the trip. Many authors find themselves struggling to choose between traditional publishing and self-publishing, whether to embrace the support system that comes with traditional publishing or the independence and ownership inherent to self-publishing. For them, hybrid publishing might be the happy middle ground they've been hoping for! In this episode, we get together with CEO, lawyer, and speaker, Naren Aryal to discuss hybrid publishing and what he has learned from over ten years in the industry. Naren is the CEO of two thriving hybrid publishing companies, Amplify Publishing and Mascot Books, and has helped countless authors publish and market their books. Listening in, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how hybrid publishing works. While this method requires an investment from the author, it supports them throughout the process and allows the author considerably more control as well as the bulk of the royalties. Naren gives a detailed account of the distribution process and how hybrid and traditional publishing can leverage their connections to access broader methods of distribution. Next, we delve into effective strategies for optimizing book sales on Amazon and how Amplify Publishing is able to help its authors sell successfully on Amazon. Naren also shares his insights on marketing through content, and why your book should be the culmination of a larger content strategy. Join us today for this fascinating look at the world of publishing, marketing, Amazon, and more!

You are in for a treat with today’s guest and her unique story of resilience. Even though it took many years to make her childhood dreams come true, she found a way to make it happen despite overwhelming odds that were against her. She’s now enjoying success that she never saw coming--and the best is yet to come! Join us to learn more! Lori Orlinsky is a multi-award-winning author who lives in Chicago. She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. An author with Mascot Books, Lori writes rhyming, lesson-based picture books that naturally lead to a discussion about important topics, such as bullying prevention and honesty. At just over five feet tall, she wishes her first book Being Small (Isn’t So Bad After All) was around while she was growing up. Fulfilling a lifelong dream How long would you chase your dream before giving up? Lori knew as a young child that she wanted to write books. Even as a kid, she crafted construction paper “books” to tell her stories. She later prepared for the journey to writing children’s books by going to journalism school and writing in different capacities whenever she found opportunities. Her inspiration came from a specific incident with her oldest daughter being singled out as the shortest in her class. When Lori looked for children’s books about being small, she couldn’t find a single one! This was her inspiration to write Being Small (Isn’t So Bad After All). Lori calls this event her “Aha moment” in the journey to chase her lifelong dream of being a writer. This is what it took to realize her dream was finding the personal passion for writing about a topic that impacted her family, along with realizing that the need existed for a book like hers. Lori’s book is for kids who feel singled out and slighted because of their small size, but it’s a book about bullying prevention at its core. TWEET: Lori realized her dream was finding the personal passion for writing about a topic that impacted her family. @loriorlinskyauthor #chasingdreams Continuing on the journey How many “No’s” would it take to make you give up on your dream? Lori would give a big number to that question. After writing her book, it took about 200 tries to get it published, but she never gave up. Lori’s second book, The Tooth Fairy’s Tummyache, was written in response to her struggle to teach her daughters the value of honesty. The story, with a main character named for her youngest daughter, concludes with an admonition to be honest and always tell the truth. The book has the fun silliness of a story with rhymes, but it teaches an important lesson in honesty, too. Lori believes that a fun story that teaches kids a valuable lesson is better than sitting down to have those difficult conversations about their behavior. Lori’s third book, Balloons for Tiger, is about the love we have for our pets and will be out in May 2021. TWEET: It took Lori 200 tries to get her first book published. @loriorlinskyauthor #chasingdreams The epitome of a dream chaser Does your dream chase inspire others? You don’t have to look hard at Lori’s story to be inspired by her resilience. She NEVER gave up on her dream. She waited for inspiration to strike and the need to arise for each book she has written. She says, “The best books come out of the times in which we live and the things that we experience.” Her first book is still in demand, it’s still being reprinted, and she’s still connecting with parents and teachers about it--even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether writing or just being a mom, Lori is passionate about teaching kids to focus on the positive moments in life and not let negative moments define them. TWEET: Lor waited for inspiration to strike and the need to arise for each book she has written. @loriorlinskyauthor #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Go back to your childhood. Find that one thing you’ve always wanted to do and make your original dreams come true.” OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [:08] Young Lori’s dreams [4:28] The reception to Lori’s first book [8:15] What happened after she wrote her first book [11:07] Having resilience to keep going [15:59] Lori’s next book: Balloons for Tiger [19:08] No time limit on our dreams [20:35] Lori’s kids’ reactions to her book [22:09] Lori’s daughter’s fundraising endeavor [27:08] Planting the seeds for a dream [28:19] Lessons for kids [30:24] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES: Lori’s Facebook Lori’s Instagram Lori’s Website Lori's Store - Chasing Dreams discount code through 12/31/2020: "chasingdreams" Watch the Episode on YouTube TWEETS YOU CAN USE: My book is not just for short people, but for anyone who is bullied or singled out for a physical feature. @loriorlinskyauthor #chasingdreams I needed a passion to write about something that was impacting my family. @loriorlinskyauthor #chasingdreams The things that make us different are the things that make us special. @loriorlinskyauthor #chasingdreams I wanted my two daughters to see me follow through and not quit. @loriorlinskyauthor #chasingdreams

Lori Orlinsky Owner // Foreword Publicity forewordpublicity.com lori@forewordpublicity.com My guest today on Stories Connect People is Lori Orlinsky. Lori is a multi-time, multi award winning, nationally recognized author and CDC certified bully prevention expert. October is Bully Prevention Month and this is the perfect time to bring Lori and Hayley's story to you. Lori started her work when her daughter Hayley came home from school upset. Hayley was smaller than the other kids and was called names (that seemed endearing but to Hayley made her feel bad). When the teacher made a growth chart her name was all the way at the bottom. The normally bright and and happy Haley began to freeze. Lori went to the internet looking for a book to try to make Hayley feel better about being small. When she didn't find one she started began to write her one and partnered with an amazing illustrator to share Hayley's story. Lori also talks about how bullying starts as micro aggressions and can quickly turn into bullying. She speaks at schools, conducts trainings and helps bring awareness to children and parents. Hayley joins the podcast to share how she felt and even reads a few of her favorite pages. You don't want to miss Haley sharing her own story of how this has helped her find her voice and acceptance of being small. During COVID, she had a goal to make some bracelets for the Chicago Children's hospital and wanted to raise $200 to help them buy masks. You won't believe how the story turned out. But Hayley will share this story and how it lead her to being recognized all over the media, being name the Hero Beyond the Diamond and even the Mayor even named a day in honor of Hayley. Welcome Lori and Hayley to Stories Connect People Podcast

It's week 2 of canoe! On this episode, 4x Olympian Andras Törő tells us details about the Canoe Sprint discipline that will help us watch it better at the Olympics. Andras is pretty amazing. Competing for Hungary, Andras won a silver medal in the Men's 1000m C2 event (that's doubles) at the Rome 1960 Olympics. [check out this video of his event - his boat's in the middle. Was Hungary robbed?]He competed at Tokyo 1964 in singles, and came in 4th. That's when he decided to defect to the US. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees, then made the US Olympic team and competed at the Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976 Olympics. Once he retired, he stayed involved with the sport on many levels, from coaching to being involved in the international federation. He also was a member of the US Olympic Committee's Athletes' Advisory Council, then became the secretary for the USOC for a four-year term. Now he's written a memoir about his life called Chronicles of an Olympic Defector. You can find it at Mascot Books or wherever you buy books. We're having Andras back on in June to talk about his Olympic experiences and his defection, so you've got time to read the book before you get more of the back story! Also on the show, we've got the word from the International Olympic Committee's first virtual Executive Board meeting. Bad Lies (Mascot Books, 2017) tells the story of Eddie Bennison, who is over 50 when he makes it into the professional golf circuit. In two years, he wins millions of dollars in endorsements and prize money. Then a leading golf magazine publishes articles that suggest he unfairly tampered with his clubs and used performance-enhancing drugs. Bennison loses all his endorsements and his ability to play the game. His lawyer, Charlie Mayfield, files a libel and slander lawsuit against the magazine and its powerful corporate owner. Then a woman accuses Bennison of sexually assaulting and beating her. Florence Ann Romano started working as a nanny when she was just 12 years old, and now she’s sharing those cherished memories in her debut book for children making the transition from being cared for solely by their parents to having a nanny in their home. Florence joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller on “Matters Of The Mind” tonight at 8p ET to discuss her experience as both a nanny and now author! “Nanny and Me” (May 2015, Mascot Books) is a story told through the eyes of a young girl about all of the adventures she and her little brother have with their nanny. Romano modeled the nanny in her book after herself, and each scene was inspired by her personal experiences caring for children. Romano wants children to read “Nanny and Me” – or have it read to them – and feel a sense of excitement, peace and joy wash over them. The modern day Mary Poppins wants kids to look forward to the time they spend with their new friend, and most of all, wants them to feel loved. I don’t want them to be afraid or upset; or for them to think they did something wrong; or think that Mommy and Daddy don’t love them enough to care for them,” she says. “I want this transition to be a sweet one…something to look forward to and treasure; and I want the kids to understand that the nanny is an extension of their parents.” Romano describes a nanny as “someone who can care for your child, love your child, be invested in your child and protect your child just as you, the parent, would.” “The nanny is Mom and Dad’s eyes, ears and heart,”she adds. Romano hopes parents get just as much out of her book as the children, if not more.
