Send us a textThis week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am proud to welcome Josh Christina, Recording Artist, scene-stealing, piano-wielding frontman, and veteran headliner of several cruise lines. Listeners know I am as passionate about music and comedy as I am about cruising so when I get a chance to have a conversation with someone who has performed on cruise ships, I am in my glory. Josh Christina is a dynamic and passionate musician whose love for piano rock has taken him on an incredible journey. His musical story began at the age of 7, inspired by the iconic sounds of Elvis Presley in Disney's Lilo & Stitch. It wasn't until age 15, after seeing the Broadway show Million Dollar Quartet and discovering the electrifying Jerry Lee Lewis, that Josh began playing piano, igniting his path as a pianist and performer. Josh's talents caught the attention of Grammy-nominated producer Kent Wells, who has worked with legends like Dolly Parton and Reba McIntire. Kent describes Josh as “such an old soul,” praising the way “the music just pours out of him.” This connection led to Josh recording in Nashville, creating music that resonates with the soul of classic rock and boogie-woogie. His single “Kayla Ann” topped several independent radio charts, and Josh's album Instincts (recorded at the historic Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, TN) was a testament to his mastery. Produced by Josh and Grammy-winning pianist Jon Carroll, Instincts received high praise, with Jon calling Josh a performer who “does it real well and means every note.” Josh's high-energy performances have taken him across the globe, including a UK tour where he graced the stage of Ireland's Late Late Show. He's headlined major cruise lines, bringing his piano rock show to fans of all ages worldwide. He's also shared the stage with some of the world's top boogie-woogie and rock ‘n' roll pianists, earning admiration from both peers and fans for keeping the genre alive. His latest album, UFO's Over Phoenix, recorded live at Stages Music and Arts in Maryland, has already captured attention for its unique sound. Daryl Davis, former bandleader and pianist for Chuck Berry, describes the album as striking “the perfect balance of a scent of the familiar while being creatively and refreshingly new.” Josh Christina's infectious energy, undeniable talent, and deep respect for rock and roll history have earned him a dedicated following. His music is a celebration of the past, present, and future of piano rock.Support the showSupport thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises http://www.thejoyofvacation.com/US Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon

Dolly Parton is a music legend. Her career spans 50 years, 11 Grammys, countless country music awards, and over a hundred-million records sold worldwide. She's released over seventy albums, and since her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she's decided to live up to the title and release a rock album. So she joined Newstalk ZB's Hosking to talk her 49th studio album, Rockstar. It features both original songs as well as covers of iconic hits, and on 27 of the 30 tracks Parton is accompanied by a whole cast of music stars. When it came to building the album, Parton told Mike Hosking that it started with choosing songs she especially loved. “Then you think, well, am I gonna be able to sing this song good and make the rock person that I'm stealing from proud?” She said that she didn't want to be just another country artist who made a rock album. “If I'm gonna do a rock album, I've got to do it well enough to where the rock world will think, ‘Wow. You know, that's pretty good.'” While she didn't get to record in person with every artist who features on the album, there were a few. “That was fun,” Parton told the Newstalk ZB Breakfast host. “To actually get to stand there, get to talk to them after, you know, behind the scenes.” It always seems like every famous person knows each other personally, but Parton revealed that wasn't the case. “I would actually... couldn't honestly say I knew anybody other than Cheryl Crow and even Lou Harris.” Dolly Parton's genre of choice is country, so a rock album was a bit of a departure for her in terms of musical style. She told Hosking that Kent Wells, her musical director and guitar player of over thirty years, told her that if she was going to do this, she had to be true to the genre. “He said ‘you really need to kind of be true to the song, as true to the melody as you can be also, and still be yourself.'” “I tried hard to, to try to stay in my lane so to speak,” she said. These days, most modern albums feature between ten to fifteen songs, with twelve being the standard length. Rockstar has thirty. “I always said I didn't intend to do 30 songs,” Parton confessed to Hosking. “I was just doing all these songs on a demo scale, and then I just kept doing songs that I really liked.” With the completion of this album Parton's done with the genre, telling Hosking that she'll never need to do another rock album. Country music has boomed over the years, the genre growing and becoming more successful globally, and in New Zealand. “I've loved watching it grow too, and I'm just proud, you know, that people want to have that title: ‘I'm a country singer, I'm in country music,” Parton told Newstalk ZB. With such an extensive career, last month's release of her autobiography, and the upcoming release of Rockstar, there is one question: where does she go from here? “I'm very passionate and very energetic and I have to focus that on something, but every new dream kind of spurs on another.” “I have all these chances now that I have my “brand,”” Parton joked. “I can sell cake one day and a rock and roll record on the next.” Although she has plenty to look back on, Parton doesn't dwell on the past, “I'm still looking to the future.” “I'm gonna go just as long as I can and I'm gonna, I'm gonna create as much as I can,” she told Mike Hosking. She plans to leave as much good in this world as she can, feeling that it's her duty to make the most of herself. “If I don't, nobodies gonna do it for me.”   Rockstar was released on November 17th.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"This album originally began as a 6-song EP with little direction, just songs I really loved or had planned on releasing as singles. I had already started pre-production with my producer Kent Wells when one evening I got together with Carli and Julie Kennedy and we started writing “Surprise Party.” Something clicked after we finished writing this song and the theme of the entire record just organically fell into place. It felt serendipitous," Mallory shares on the natural way in which the album came together. With her Jersey-girl attitude and romantic Italian soul, Kayla Calabrese brings her own flair to the country music scene. This down-to-earth artist has a sassy edge that shines through her lyrics, stage presence, and fresh demeanor. Being an artist has always been an aspiration of Kayla's. “I always dreamed of singing in front of an audience and performing, but I was too scared to tell anyone,” says Calabrese. It wasn't until age 16 that this “hairbrush singer” made the bold decision to make her dreams a reality. With a go-getter spirit, Kayla decided to take voice lessons, and a few years later, made the brave move to Music City to pursue her passion for music. Upon moving to Nashville, Kayla enrolled in Nursing School at Belmont University, while also launching her music career. Shortly after coming to Nashville, Kayla began recording with Grammy nominated music producer Kent Wells, best known for producing Dolly Parton. Wells produced Kayla's first EP Kayla Calabrese, featuring her first single “Kiss Me,” and was a great experience she describes as something she will never forget. Pleased by the success, Kayla was determined to keep pushing forward. A few years later, after graduating and becoming an ER Nurse, Kayla teamed up with producer Jimmy Nichols to perfect a project she had been developing, starting with her Fall 2014 release “Whisper.” Kayla wasn't the only one moved by the creation with Jimmy Nichols—Jimmy was equally impressed. “I've never worked with anyone who seems to have such a grasp of how to weave a lyric and melody together at such a young age than Kayla,” says Nichols. “Her songs show that she's strong and sensitive and sure of where she's headed, which I believe is straight to the top.”As a musician, Kayla can show her strong disposition in one song, yet become vulnerable with the next. “My favorite part about being an artist is that I can express my feelings and emotions in a song that not only means something to me but others can relate in their own personal way,” says Calabrese. This raw emotion was found in her latest hit, “Give,” and can be found in her brand new radio single, "Happily Never After."
