Hold on to your hats this week, as it's finally time to give the legend his due. That's right - this week is all about KRAID! We're going through and ranking all four of the Big Daddy Kraid confrontations and discussing the mechanics and evolutions, plus talking about Kraid adjacent fights and appearances, like Nintendo Land and Super Smash Bros. Melee! We finish off our Kraid homage by pitching a couple ways you could fight the behemoth in a 3D Metroid Prime game, how big Kraid would need to be, and discussing environment vs combat battle options All this, PLUS we give our two cents on the current rumblings and rumors surrounding the Xbox's future and what lead to this sad state of affairs. Come pay homage to the one and only Kraid with us and let us know what you think of our ideas! Grant "Stemage" Henry is a composer, a session guitarist and a remixer. In 2003, Grant created Metroid Metal (you can still download all the tracks, just follow the link), and so began his lengthy career in the VGM remix community. Grant and I don't talk too much about remixing, but we focus on a couple of original projects: his original soundtrack for Card of Darkness, a mobile game from the creator of Adventure Time and a solo project he released in 2016 called Narrowband. I loved talking with Grant about (some of) his original music! We also briefly chat about his music for the League of Legends spinoff called Hextech Mayhem. "Could I survive long enough to escape?" The Game Boy Advance game library featured many renowned Super Nintendo titles released on a handheld device for a newer and more portable generation. After the success of Metroid Fusion, Nintendo R&D1 opted not to port the beloved Super Metroid, choosing instead to return to 1987's Metroid from the Famicom and NES for inspiration. Not only with the aim of making the original title more accessible, Yoshio Sakamoto and his team also took the opportunity to extend both the plot and the gameplay of the original game with the addition of a Zero Suit Samus. Join Rich, Ryan, Leah and Brian as we discuss the nature of remake, remaster and retelling, and look at the life and times of Samus Aran in Metroid: Zero Mission. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_566.mp3 Music featured in this issue: 1. It's hard to believe, but it's been over a year since Metroid Dread released. This week, Andy and Dak are joined by Omega Metroid Website Reporter Griffin Olney to reminisce about their initial reactions to Dread being announced, the buildup towards the game and specifically whether or not Kraid should have been shown, how we feel a year later about some of the new powerups and features that the game introduced, see if our opinions on the story have changed, talk about areas that the next 2D Metroid could improve upon, and examine the state of the Metroid franchise in general one year after release. Do you feel that? The dread? The fear? The anxiety? Mostly the dread though, it's the one that's in the title so I guess it's the most important. Please stop talking, or that evil robot is going to find us. What? I'm the one who's been talking this whole time? Have I at least been telling you about this new bonus episode from Smashterpieces on 2021's Metroid Dread for the Nintendo Switch? Yes? What about how we liked it and talk a lot about why we like it? Have I mentioned how Kraid doesn't deserve respect? You're waving your arms wildly with fear in your eyes, but I asked a yes or no question could you at least answer? It's rude not t- Oh I appear to have been stabbed.
It's another year for the podcast! We're getting 2022 kicked off with some positive vibes talking about our favorite memories from Metroid Dread! We talk about THAT suit reveal, the fights against Raven Beak, Kraid' big return, the rebirth of the Speed Booster, the inclusion of the Flash Shift, Elun's big secret, seeing the Chozo, and of course, Samus promising to "end the fight once and for all"! All this, PLUS a little Breath of the Wild 2 talk, Star Wars prequels, Avril Lavigne and old CD's we have, and so much more! Come hang with some friends to get the new year started right! Subscribe! The first season of Game Informer's Video Gameography explores the history of the Metroid series. After running down Samus' 2D outings, we're ready to venture into the world of 3D with Metroid Prime. Released on November 17, 2002 for Nintendo's Gamecube, Metroid Prime is often considered one of the best games of its era. However, to better understand Metroid Prime's influence we first have to go back to the tumultuous founding of Retro Studios. In order to develop Metroid Prime, Retro canceled four other projects, and even then many of its designers almost didn't survive development. In the end, Retro created a total masterpiece that feels ahead of its time. Join us as we talk about Retro's struggles, why Shigeru Miyamoto felt that the morph ball was essential to the formula, and how we almost saw Kraid in 3D. Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves), Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and special guest, Game Informer's own Blake Hester (@metallicaisrad) for the next hour as we explore Metroid Prime's lore, development history, and lasting impact. If you'd like to get in touch with the Video Gameography podcast, you can email us at podcast@gameinformer.com. You can also join our official Game Informer Discord server by linking your Discord account to your Twitch account and subscribing to the Game Informer Twitch channel. From there, find the Video Gameography channel under "Community Spaces."
I think we could all agree that boss fights are one of the strongest aspects of Metroid Dread, so this week, the fellas challenge themselves by trying to come up with a ranking of the best to worst boss encounters in the game. From Chozo Warriors to Corpious, Kraid to Raven Beak, we go over every fight in detail and end up with a definitive list of the best boss fights in the game! Nate and Sebastian are joined by Ryan and David to discuss SUPER METROID, the seminal space bounty hunter adventure from 1994. We discuss the birth of the "Metroidvania" sub-genre, sequence breaking, and some things that games can do in ways that other media can't.
