Jonathan and Tanya are back to talk about what nostalgia for current events might look like in the future. They cover the current tough times including the Switch 2's price (along with the USA's tariff affecting the price) before switching it up to talk about nostalgia for 2009. While they're there, Sarah Carapace stops by to talk about the Bionic Commando reboot that never really launched. Back in the current day, Jonathan notes how cranky game developers can get when they get older and blows up Tanya's spot regarding her enjoyment of the game Royal Match.0:00:00 - Emo Comes A-Callin'0:02:45 - Nostalgia For Now Because It's Only Getting Worse0:06:10 - Switch Too Expensive0:07:25 - Things Were "Fine" in 20090:08:59 - What Happened with Bionic Commando (2009)? w/ Sarah Carapace0:47:10 - The Butt-cist Insult and Subsequent Apology Tour0:48:47 - Time Makes Cranky Old Men of Us All0:50:05 - What From This Time Will You Be Nostalgic For Later?0:53:49 - Wrap Up/Plugs/Thanks Patrons!0:59:08 - Butts Be Poppin': https://soundcloud.com/d-booth-sanford/butts-be-poppinFollow Sarah Carapace on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/sarahcarapace.bsky.socialCheck out the Kickstarter for Violet Core: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sarahcarapace/violet-coreCheck out Nintendo Force Magazine: https://www.nintendoforcemagazine.com/Check out the Gamebound Generations Magazine: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wearegamebound/generations-winter-2024-premium-video-game-magazine/Jonathan and Tanya will be a PAX East if you wanna hang out and read Nintendo Force Magazine! Today Andy and Diego spotlight Steel Legion for the NES from François Brodeur and published by Broke Studio. Join us as we navigate a dystopian 2004 filled with oppressive AI, run-and-gun exploration, and echoes of classic hits like Bionic Commando. We also head to the ZX Spectrum with The Blond, a uniquely challenging puzzle-action game inspired by the classic Western movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, guiding Tuco safely through each frantic level by strategically shooting targets to keep him alive. We also share exciting news about Atari's upcoming Jeff Minter-themed game jam and debate the mysterious boundaries of what truly counts as a sandwich. And yes, we promise to get to the bottom of whether a hot dog qualifies! Dust off your Commodore 64, power up that NES, and listen in!

We've left Pluto in the rearview mirror. We've taken a break to enjoy Read or Die. Now it's time to begin our fifteenth season of Who's That Anime?! Welcome to the depressing world of Kino No Tabi! Join us this week as we discuss the 2009 video game Bionic Commando, Mel Gibson's What Women Want, and the depressing similarities Kino has to Lain! [Episode 0] The Tower Country: In this bonus prologue episode, Kino and Hermes arrive in a country where everyone is fixated on the construction of the city's endlessly tall tower for no other reason than just because. Even its imminent collapse changes little. [Episode 1] Land of Visible Pain: Kino travels from country to country, staying in each one for only three days. In this first country, she finds only machines and no people at first. When she finds some people later on, no one is willing to talk to her. It's a charming little NES platformer where you feed animals candy until they pass out, and then you wear their skin. Seriously. If it sounds kinda messed up, well, it is. But it's also a really fun, kinda tough NES game, and it's made by Capcom, so it has to be decent at worst. I remember seeing it in magazines as a kid, and renting it a couple times. I used to think it was too hard, but playing it now I find it most beatable (that final level is pretty rough). Getting to play as the various animals is cool, and hey, who doesn't love poisonous candy? My guest this week is the man that has been on me to cover this game for 5+ years, long-time hot dog, Awright/Andrew. I asked him why he loves this game so much, and we ranked the various animal costumes, went through all the levels, and made fun of how fucked up the premise of the game is. This was a good time. And before we feed animals candy, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks me for Steam Deck recommendations. What's a good game for someone to try tactical RPGs with? And how often do people make bad puns with my last name?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 lesser-known Capcom NES games: Strider, Code Name: Viper, and Bionic Commando. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this latest mini episode we're talking about Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos, a childhood favorite on the NES composed by Tim Follin. Solstice released on the NES in the US and UK in mid 1990. It was developed by Software Creations and published by various companies in different regions. It's a challenging isometric puzzle platformer in the vein of games like Knight Lore and Lumo. Solstice only released on NES, but it did have a sequel on the SNES called Equinox. Tim Follin is a VGM composer that hardly needs an introduction. Master of VGM folk and prog rock and putting way more effort into game soundtracks than they usually deserved, Tim worked on games like Bionic Commando and Ghouls'n Ghosts for C64, Plok for SNES, Ecco the Dolphin for Dreamcast and a tons more games. More recently he's moved into game development with games like Contradiction: Spot the Liar.
M. Night Shyamalan is both jealous and relieved he has nothing to do with these twists. Or does he? hehehehe

On December 6, 2022, the anime industry mourned the loss of one of its most influential talents, Ichirou Mizuki. He was 74 years old. However, his powerful voice wasn't limited to animation. He also had a great presence in video games and today on THE 1UPBEAT, your host, Eric Silver, is going to pay tribute to the man by playing music from some of the games where his voice is featured prominently including GOEMON'S GREAT ADVENTURE, SUPER HERO SAKUSEN, TATSUNOKO FIGHT, SUPER ROBOT WARS Α GAIDEN, TOKYO BUS GUIDE 2, BIONIC COMMANDO and more. As requested by patron Robert C. (find him at https://www.tiktok.com/@robertcarr75), we're taking a look at the NES version of Bionic Commando! A completely different game than the arcade game of the same name, Capcom made this a full adventure with equippable items, minor puzzles, and a much longer mission - but did this game's awkward mechanical arm work well in lieu of jumping? We're playing it again now to let you know if we think it did! Also discussed, turning each other into retrogaming characters, fake video game OSTs, and our poor understanding of copyrights! More Bionic Commando coming hot and ready at your face! That doesn't sound right. But remember, the Bionic Commando has a HOT FINGER, so take that for what you will. This is a kid's book right? Heyyoooo, new series! Come aboard for this two parter featuring special guest HotCyder of the Bullet Time podcast. Not only does he host the preeminent podcast on shooters that have missed their mark he is the thumbnail king of youtube, and a pretty spiffy YouTuber in his own right. Bionic Commando is another Worlds of Power special, which were produced by friend of the pod Seth Godin back in the late 80s and early 90s. This one follows the adventures of the titular Bionic Commando as he advances into Badd territory to save his friend, Super Joe. It's uh, great. Part 2 of this special will be up next week. Also as an aside, there has been some crunchiness going on with the audio lately and I believe it might have to do with our recording platform. Just FYI, I am investigating how to solve it and if we have to move our recordings elsewhere. Bionic Commando is one of the best games for the NES. Taking away your jump and forcing you to rely on predictable swinging physics was (and is!) a novel concept, matched by a delightful semi-serious, semi-goofy tone and exquisite level design. So you can imagine how high hopes were when a sequel was announced. Well, that was a mistake.

Caleb and Travis are back! This time with a big, fake arm and a mission to save their best friend from HITLER! Oh my! A curious release this week, as we come to a game that shipped twice for NES: Once with Nintendo's approval, and once illegally. Ever the rogue, that Indiana Jones. Like Tengen's early conversion of Gauntlet, Temple of Doom adapts an arcade game but makes quite a few changes to its structure, format, and objectives. Capcom didn't have the monopoly on dramatic reinterpretations of coin-op titles for NES, it seems, although Temple of Doom is no Bionic Commando. On the other hand, we also have Data East's disappointingly literal interpretation of Midway's Rampage. Of all the games that could have benefitted from some sort of enhanced gameplay loop or added depth for its console iteration, this is it. But no, Data East simply stripped it down and removed features, making for a game with little challenge or variety over its entire running length. One of December 1988's all-timers arrives this week, and while it may not be the best-remembered of the bunch (not when the other two big releases belonged to huge ongoing franchises), but I'd argue that it's the best and most polished. It's also the most fearless; Bionic Commando didn't so much ask players to learn an entirely new style of platform gaming as demand it as the price of entry. But once you got a handle on the grappling mechanics, Bionic Commando played like nothing else on the system, becoming a fast-paced action game with breezy, high-speed action through a dozen stages linked by an interesting narrative and well-conceived adventure gameplay flow. It remains the gold standard for grapple-based action gaming to this day, and for good reason: It rules. Production note: NES footage captured from @Analogue Mini.

OctoRock (Adam) — Today at 9:46 AM My three favorite non-TMNT bmups are The Simpsons arcade game, Battletoads and River City Ransom. The Simpsons may actually beat out TMNT for me as far as the 4 player arcade experience goes. Just such a hilarious and well crafted game. Battletoads speaks for itself, I'm not sure if it's a full blown bmup because of the platforming and speeder bike levels, but they teamed up with Double Dragon so that's gotta say something. River City Ransom is probably the only oddball here. A great semi-obscure NES game that thankfully a lot of people are now aware of thanks to River City Girls. One of my favorite NES titles and up there with Battletoads for me. the Well-Red Mage — Today at 9:50 AM Shredders Revenge is AH MAH GAHHHHHHHH so good. A beat em up nobody gives enough love to is Fight N Rage. Seriously amazing. ElPeeDee (Liam D) — Today at 10:09 AM mine has to be Batman Returns for SNES. I loved the grabbing & throwing mechanics, breaking parts of the environment and the bat gadgets you could employ. the sprite art was gorgeous and, while I hadn't even seen the movie at that point, I loved the characters twodollarhero — Today at 10:25 AM For me, it's Scott Pilgrim. It's not the most mechanically dense beat-em-up, but I've come to realize that I prefer the River City Ransom approach of simpler gameplay, but a more fleshed out world with characters, shops, etc. Paul Robertson's artwork is gorgeous and the soundtrack by Anamanaguchi is among the greatest in video game history, full stop. CrazyGreekDre — Today at 10:51 AM Turtles in time, Final fight both sNES and TMNT arcade game ChrisHL94
This week on the Game Deflators Podcast John and Ryan are somewhat surprised to learn that EA is looking to be acquired or merge with another organization. Who could possibly acquire them and why? The guys also chat about the closure of some Nintendo eshops, Sony's view on multiplatform games, and remarks an original Halo team member has made about the TV show. Capping off the episode, John and Ryan review Bionic Commando for the NES. Listed as one of the consoles top 20 games, where does it stand with the Game Deflators? Want more Game Deflators content? I've never hidden the fact that I'm a card carrying Mega Man fanboy. I love that little blue bastard so much. And we've reviewed of a few of his games on the podcast over the years, but his debut title has slipped under the radar. Admittedly, that might be because it just isn't as good as most of his other games, but it's a still a really fun, solid (and tough) NES platformer. It's also where the Blue Bomber started, and it's time to give it it's due. I'm rolling solo this week, not because I couldn't get anyone to talk Mega Man, but because I didn't want to bug any of my friends to record a podcast over the holidays. And I'm so damned passionate about this game (and franchise) that I had no problem carrying a conversation on with myself. I get that Mega Man isn't for everyone, but if I turn even one more person onto the greatness that is the Mega Man series with this episode, I'll sleep easy knowing I made the world a better place. And before I go down on that Mega Man meat, I stumble through another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, I talk about the way female characters are portrayed in video games. Someone asks what advice I would offer myself if I go back to the launch of this podcast. And does anyone else feel pressure to get to the end of a game that seems to be taking too long? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring three Capcom NES games - Ghosts N Goblins, Bionic Commando, and Little Nemo: The Dream Master. Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! Twitter: @MemberTheGame Instagram: @MemberTheGame Twitch.tv/MemberTheGame

The classic retro franchise Bionic Commando has been given the gritty reboot treatment! The gang GRAPPLES with the new super power of a bionic arm, tries to get a HANDLE on the web-slinging, and tries to GRASP the subtle plot twist. Were the critics wrong? or were they all RIGHT. He's got a bionic left arm, if that's not clear, but he's also got a bad attitude. We discuss how to ruin a super-hero 'what-if's, Burger King, and better 2009 games w/ Frank, Tom, Victor and Chris.
Ed explores the music and history of the Bionic Commando series from its arcade and microcomputer origins to the modern HD remakes and beyond.
Captain Bryan Buckley, USMC (Retired) Discusses the Benefits of Cannabis for PTSD and Suicide Prevention via his company Helmand Valley Growers Company and non-profit, Battle Brothers Foundation. I had a chance to speak with Captain Buckley, who is essentially a Bionic Commando at this point with all the injuries he has sustained throughout his military career. We thanks Captain Buckley for his service, his care for his brothers in arms and for taking the time to chat with us about suicide prevention, opioid addiction, survival and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Official Press Release: While the reasons are complex, PTS and chronic pain contribute to the shocking statistic, and cannabis has emerged as a promising treatment. Helmand Valley Growers Company, a veteran-owned and operated cannabis manufacturer is dedicated to improving veterans' mental health. They commit 100% of their profits to the Battle Brothers Foundation, who researches the benefits of medical cannabis with the penultimate goal of making sure the VA takes note. Given everything that has happened in Afghanistan (and the downtrodden feelings hitting many vets as a result) and suicide awareness week coming up, we'd love to connect you with them to have an open conversation about cannabis and suicide prevention. Some speaking points include: How does medical cannabis and mental health differ from recreational use? What is the advantage of using cannabis to treat PTS and pain as opposed to anti-depressants and opiates? What will it take to get the VA and other medical facilities to really explore medical cannabis for treating mental health? For more information on Helmand Valley Growers Company visit follow them on Instagram @hvgcompany and Facebook at Helmand Valley Growers Company. Visit their official website at www.hvgcompany.com. Westin transforms into a robot in this episode. It's really impressive and it's worth listening to this episode just for that moment, but I'm not going to tell you when that is. Also, we talk about nintendo.

Sorry, I had a hard time phrasing this question, so it's prolly a bit confusing. Maybe an example might help. For me I would say Kirby Star Allies. Although I have issues with Star Allies, I don't think it's a bad game. I picked it because I feel that it makes the Kirby franchise, or at least the modern Kirby games, seem a lot more "Kiddie" than it actually is, and because it's the main Kirby game on switch I feel that it has spread this impression to a lot of people. It's very tempting for me to write down a full lecture on why I think that is right here, but I think that's enough for you all to hopefully get an idea of what I mean by the question. InfiniteBlue — 06/23/2021 The Devil May Cry franchise has two of these. The first of which is the DmC reboot, which was so tonally discordant with the rest of the series with its edgelord "hollywood-ification" of the plot and characters. It's a decent action game mechanically and would have been well received if they simply... didn't call it DmC. Then there's DMC2, which is a dull and bad video game by any measure. You'd be doing yourself a favor by going straight from 1 to 3, it's that unremarkable. twodollarhero — 06/23/2021 I think a lot of the more recent Super Monkey Ball games are a good example of this. I've been playing SMB2 again lately (because I'm so hyped for Banana Mania) and bouncing from that (no pun intended) to something like Banana Blitz HD is a jarring experience. The more modern entries of the series - which vastly outnumber what fans consider to be the “good” games - totally misrepresent what the games are about. Suddenly, there's jumping mechanics and every level is littered with guard rails or worst of all, control gimmicks. The series is about fun, challenging arcade gameplay with pitch perfect controls… and most of the games in the series at this point aren't about that anymore. SpiderShan — 06/23/2021 I guess I'd have to go with Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World for Wii. There are quite a few “Tales of” games and spin-offs and Tales of Symphonia for GameCube is considered one of the best. I know it's my favorite in the series. I was hyped to play the sequel but they decided to change a lot of the gameplay including the use of monsters in place of human companions. You play as characters completely unrelated to the original game and the characters that I loved from the first game were “guest characters” in the sequel that would come and go and were a hollow shell of what they were before. It's such a departure from what made the original so special. ChrisHL94Rewind
Holy crap we've done 50 of these. We mark the halfway point in the Top 100 Games Podcast list with a VERY special guest... Jeremy Parish of Retronauts, one of the OG video game podcasts (and still going strong 15 years later!). Jeremy's done good stuff at EGM, 1UP, IGN, USgamer, and now he's making great things happen at my favorite publisher, Limited Run Games. And he's here to talk the platformiest of all platformers, Bionic Commando!

Jonathan recounts the joys of brachiating in Bionic Commando: a classic platformer with unique mechanics and quality style and story.
In episode ten of Attack the Backlog, Marc grapples their way through the streets and skies of Bionic Commando (2009), a third-person action-adventure game that is rough around the edges, but still a good time . Bionic Commando originally came out on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC back in 2009 (obviously). Anyway, something-something jumpy and occasionally making me want to take a dumpy, cheers and enjoy the show. Anyway, that's it and that's all folks.
