The Lakers continued the road trip on Friday night, with their next stop headed to Bourbon Street as they met up with the New Orleans Hornets. And with a stop the next night in Milwaukee for the Lakers, it would have been nice to put away this game in the early moments. But each time the Lakers moved out to a double-digit lead, the Pelicans kept it close enough to make it interesting, until the LA put it all together late for a 118-104 victory in NBA Cup action. Tune in as the guys recap the game, and what they thought worked and didn't work coming off the lambasting in Oklahoma City. They give you an update on how Luka Doncic (24 points, 12 assists), Austin Reaves (31 points, 7 assists), and Deandre Ayton's (20 points, 16 rebounds) efforts played a key role in the Lakers' victory, and where the team stands in their NBA Cup pool. Plus, what happens next as they have a back-to-back coming on Saturday with a stop in Milwaukee as well. First of all, congrats to Tom P for winning our NFL picks contest for Week 10. His reward is what many would regard as a punishment: A 30 minute phone conversation with me. Hit me up at houseofstrauss@substack.com if you wish to collect. My conversational shortcomings aside, it's been great speaking with subscribers who've won so far. Getting to know you through these weekly NFL competitions has been edifying. Starting this week, we're making prizes more tangible by adding $100 Ticketmaster gift cards for weekly winners, and the prizes will grow as the crowd does. So if you've enjoyed playing, invite your friends to join the HoS NFL and NBA lobbies and let's make this community even bigger.Perhaps Tom P and I will discuss this latest podcast with top level NBA reporter Yaron Weitzman, author of A Hollywood Ending. Yaron's new book on the awkward/sordid LeBron Laker Era has my total recommendation. For a sense of how hot the material is, the Lakers preemptively threatened to sue over the contents, alleging that the author's description of now former owner Jeanie Buss was “misogynistic.” My contention is that Magic Johnson comes off far worse in the book than Jeanie, a topic we get into in this episode. We’re expecting back-to-back storms in Southern California, and communities like Altadena and Malibu are already preparing as the next system builds. Conway shared his great story about Lakers legend James Worthy, and we talked about how the Tim Conway & Carol Burnett Show once brought families together for true appointment viewing—something that feels almost extinct today. We’re also live on remote at Smart & Final in Yorba Linda for the 11/21 Pastathon kickoff. There was a pursuit of a stolen car in the San Fernando Valley, and former LAPD Bomb Squad member Johnny Hanson joined us to explain why these dangerous chases are so unpredictable and how officers stay safe. In local developments, Costco plans to open a stand-alone gas station in Mission Viejo in 2026, and the LA Olympics are preparing to use air taxis to move VIPs, fans, and staff around the city during the Games.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
ANthony and Pete take a wide-angle look at the Lakers through this first month or so to try to figure out who they are as a team. They discuss Luka's season to this point and what he can do better. They then look ahead to LeBron's return and what he'll need to bring that they've been missing. To wrap things up, the live audience had a few questions they were able to get to. This iteration of the Lakers has been together for roughly a month at this point, so Anthony and Pete try to figure out who this team actually is. Are they the group that at one point won five straight? Or are they the team that's been embarrassed in two of their last three? Anthony discusses an aspect of Austin's game he's more concerned about than how Reaves handles athleticism, his shooting. The Lakers need to do a better job finding him some easier looks. Then, he takes a look at some struggling teams and how they might impact the trade market. Finally, he wraps with a nice, long Q&A with the live youtube audience.
