It's a Quick Fix featuring Joe Buono (@IslesFix) and former VP of Communications for the Islanders, Chris Botta (@ChrisBottaNHL).What felt inevitable to some but unlikely to others happened on Tuesday afternoon when the Islanders announced that the contract of Hall of Fame executive Lou Lamoriello would not be renewed after seven seasons as President of Hockey Operations and General Manager. This type of change is significant for any team, but for the Islanders, it represents a seismic shift for the organization, both on and off the ice, due to how Lamoriello operated. He did things his way, and those methods instilled professionalism, credibility, and, yes, success that was missing before. But the time was right for a change. After four mediocre at best seasons, the Islanders were not going to turn into Stanley Cup contenders over the summer. This wasn't a one-year fix; it's now a multi-year plan, and that's best for someone else with a fresh face, fresh eyes, and fresh ideas to take the franchise forward. The fanbase was clamoring for ownership to show decisiveness, and that happened on Tuesday. Now, the search for the next GM to lead this organization into a new era of Islanders hockey begins. Get full access to Isles Fix at islesfix.substack.com/subscribe

The trade deadline has come and gone and wouldn't you know it, folks in Islanders Country are still scratching their heads. Much beloved Brock Nelson was traded for a haul after failing to come to terms on an extension in what turned out to be a seller's market. But outside of shipping Dennis Cholowski out in a minor league deal, no other moves of consequence were made. This begs the question - what's the plan, man? Sean, Stefen, and guest Brian Compton try to figure it out as the recap the moves and discuss what it means for the franchise going forward. Our friend Brian Comption is raising money for MS and you can support the cause by following this link. The NHL is about to break for the 4 Nations Face-Off and everyone in Islanders Country seems to be wondering what Lou Lamoriello may have up his sleeve between now and the March 7th trade deadline. Are they close enough in the standings to contend? Will they sell? Will they stand pat? Will they buy..? Who or what is he willing to deal? Only Lamoriello knows. Before attention shifts to international hockey, the Islanders also had two tough matchups in Winnipeg and Minnesota to deal with. It wasn't just the calendar changing over as 2025 has provided a huge resurgence for the New York Islanders as they put together an extended winning streak and seem to have solved their woes on the penalty kill and closing out wins. Lou Lamoriello is also looking like a genius as his reinforcements on defense in the form of Tony DeAngelo, Scott Perunovich, and Adam Boqvist have all fit in like a glove so far. But will the injuries prove too much to overcome with Mat Barzal adding his name to the list? And is that a sign the Isles may want to still consider selling at the deadline despite recent success? In episode #286, we're joined by John Weisbrod, former NHL executive, scout and NBA GM. Yes, you read that correctly. After a playing career that saw Weisbrod win a National Championship at Harvard and attend the San Jose Sharks first training camp, he pivoted to a career in team building at just 25 years-ols. After getting his start in Albany of the AHL, he would travel to Orlando where his time with the IHL's Solar Bears resulted in him being named the GM of the Magic for one season. Following that, he would return to hockey, spending time as a scout and Assistant GM with the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. You're going to want to hear Weisbrod's story. He might just be the most interesting man in hockey. Listen as he shares the story behind running an NBA franchise, key lessons while working under Lou Lamoriello and why hockey sense runs throughout the Hughes family.

The Islanders have ridden a wave of mediocrity through the first quarter of the season. They hover around .500 in reaching distance of a wild card spot while dealing with a number of key injuries. The Isles season has come to an abrupt end, bowing out in 5 games to the Carolina Hurricanes in a Round One series that may have looked a little closer on the ice than the 4-1 tally on paper. Either way, we look towards another summer with Lou Lamoriello at the helm, this time with a new co-pilot in head coach Patrick Roy.There's some quiet hype building around what might be done to change the Islanders course for the better. Will difficult roster decisions be made? Or will it be more of the same? Will Patrick Roy restructure his coaching staff? We're down to the last 11 game of the season and the Islanders are hanging on by a thread. They've erased a 6-game winning streak with a 6-game losing skid. They provided a little hope with a big win over a top team in the Jets, then they laid an egg vs the Devils. Reliably Unreliable.Andrew Gross of Newsday joined Sean and Stefen to try to diagnose what ails the Islanders and figure out why this team can't maintain any level of consistency.Follow HNiNY on all social media platforms at @hockeynightnyPresented by Blue Line Deli and Bagels (http://bluelinedeli.com)Sponsored by Main Street Board Game Cafe (http://mainstboardgamecafe.com)Sponsored by Raiser and Kenniff (http://raiserandkenniff.com)Catch Stefen's coverage on the Isles beat for The Hockey News (https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/new-york-islanders)Subscribe to our friends at IslesFix newsletter! Mike and Dan talk about Lou Lamoriello's press conference, trades they'd like to see, the Stanley Cup final and a potpourri of topics. After taking a quick look at the Golden Knights championship (and a cynical look at the coverage surrounding it), the hosts discuss some of the more notable quotes from the presser that touched on Josh Bailey's future, the Islanders' unrestricted free agents and how the season ended. Lamoriello was slightly less cryptic than usual but that doesn't mean we have any idea what's going to happen this offseason. They also mention the addition of former NHL exec John Collins to the front office. In the second half, they talk about how the Islanders can acquire a couple of pricy stars, what the perfect Long Island sendoff for Bailey would be, and the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, Stay tuned for info about a possible live stream we'll try to host for the first round. In an impromptu milestone episode, Mike and Dan discuss the possible contract extension for GM Lou Lamoriello before diving into an extensive vivisection of the now-eliminated Maple Leafs. Newsday reports that Lamoriello is expected to get a three-year extension, which is both good and disappointing for a team that's stable but needs changes. They also discuss goalie Ilya Sorokin's deserved spot as a finalist (and maybe dark horse winner) of the Vezina Trophy and pay their respects to defenseman Gerry Hart, an integral early Islander, who passed away this week. But the bulk of the show is about enjoying the end of another Leafs season and the bizarre stalker behavior exhibited by many in the Toronto hockey media. The coverage of the Leafs is a big reason why they generate so much hatred from other fanbases, and nothing brings out the feelings on both sides like their annual playoff flameout. This year's took a little longer but that just means more angst, more uncertainly for the offseason, more worries for next season, more knives out for the captain and more laughs from us. All that and it's episode No. 250. Where else would you be on a Saturday night? Subscribe to our Patreon! Jeff and Greg discuss Lou Lamoriello's confidence in signing Bo Horvat to an extension, why the latter feels like a Lamoriello type player and if an extension with the Islanders comes below the extension given to Mathew Barzal. Next, they look at what this trade does for Barzal, where Horvat could land if he doesn't sign an extension and if Edmonton might be one of those destinations (9:53). In closing, Jeff and Greg talk about which teams are the most interesting ahead of the deadline, if the Devils could make a splash for Timo Meier and if Jonathan Toews could be moved out of Chicago (26:39).
