This lecture by Madhavan K. Palat, Secretary of the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund and editor of the forthcoming comprehensive online edition of the Nehru Archives, explores the complex and often paradoxical dimensions of Nehru's engagement with democracy. Nehru presented himself as a liberal and a socialist. Yet, while he did not explicitly identify as a conservative, he frequently employed Burkean and traditionalist arguments to legitimize Indian democracy. At the same time, he repeatedly warned that democracy risked self-destruction through the emergence of a democratic dictatorship or the tyranny of the majority. Palat examines how Nehru derived the ethos of democracy from traditional panchayats and 19th-century nationalist movements, asserting that democracy had become the yugadharma—the defining moral order—after Independence. Nehru insisted that democracy had to be dynamic, propelled by movements but grounded in stable institutions. When conflicts inevitably arose between these two forces, he consistently prioritized movement, seeing it as a continuation of nationalist mobilization, while institutions embodied the legacy of the Constituent Assembly and its Constitution. Yet, Nehru never saw the Constitution as a sacred text. Democracy, he believed, could only be safeguarded through democratic practice, not constitutional rigidity—a stance that effectively repudiated the idea of a “Basic Structure” doctrine. Seeking to deepen democracy, Nehru championed Panchayati Raj, arguing that democracy required a broad, pyramid-like foundation to prevent its collapse. However, as Palat highlights, Nehru's vision was fraught with ambiguities. He viewed panchayats as both democratic and bureaucratic extensions, expressed dismay over the rise of opportunists in the electoral system, and feared that democracy was breeding an elective aristocracy and oligarchy. Nehru lamented the absence of a two-party system in India but keenly observed an ideological dichotomy between Congress and Hindutva, presciently suggesting that these ideologies could evolve into distinct parties. While Nehru valued moral ideals, his inspirations—Buddha, Ashoka, Akbar, and Gandhi—were not unequivocal democrats. Gandhi, though a democratic mobilizer, was autocratic in his methods. Nehru himself emerged as the most consistent symbol of democratic idealism but rejected the notion of a personality cult as vulgar and absurd. Palat's lecture delves into Nehru's ambivalence towards democracy: he despised its tendency to favor mediocrity yet feared that inspiration and charisma often led to right-wing politics, which he deplored. Nehru's political philosophy lay in reconciling contradictions and embracing ambiguities, favoring the pragmatism of a conservative over the ideological rigidity of a socialist. By drawing on his extensive work with the Nehru Archives, Palat offers fresh insights into Nehru's thought and legacy, portraying him as a leader navigating the complex interplay of ideals and realities with remarkable dexterity, even as he remained a figure defined by paradoxes and inconsistencies. Mohla by som pokračovať. Diana Duchoňová je autorkou monografie Palatín Mikuláš Esterházy (dvorská spoločnosť a aristokratická každodennosť) a spolu s Tunde Legyelovou tiež knihy Hradné kuchyne a šľachtické stravovanie v ranom novoveku. – Podporte podcasty denníka SME kúpou prémiového predplatného a užívajte si podcasty bez reklamy na webe SME.sk alebo v mobilnej aplikácii SME.sk. Ondrej Palat has not scored a goal since March 7th and has been struggling as of late. The New Jersey Devils signed for him to be a solid contributor, however, it seems as though he has not been worth the money that the Devils have been paying him. Palat signed a 5-year, $30 million contract over the summer but he's been an overpaid bottom-six player as of late. Maybe he can pick up his game come playoff time. Speaking of which, it'll be interesting to see which team the Devils play in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Will it be the Florida Panthers or the New York Rangers? Either way, the Devils will definitely have their work cut out for them.Read Ryan's article: https://www.nj.com/devils/2023/04/devils-cant-contain-historic-bruins-lose-2-1-3-takeaways.htmlFollow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

It is officially fantasy hockey trade season in the wild world of the NHL, so Flip and Steele take a look into some of the recent trade offers they have made, received, or accepted over the past few days, including a big one on the keeper/dynasty side of things in Flip's league. Väčšina popularizujúcich a populárnych spracovaní života a smrti Alžbety Báthory pracuje s príbehom masovej vrahyne. Celý život grófky má jeden smer a cieľ: organizovanie a vykonávanie vrážd nevinných mladých dievčat, zväčša slúžok.

The project that started in 2014 added luxury seating, bathrooms and restaurants. The lawsuit filed by U.S. Attorney John Lausch Jr. says the team’s 1060 Project “has had a significant adverse impact on individuals with disabilities and their ability to access Wrigley Field.” It asks for compensatory damages and civil penalties and demands that the team fix the problems to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The team says the renovation “greatly increased” the accessibility for those with disabilities. NHL – NHL free agency: Devils sign Palat, Capitals add Strome The New Jersey Devils have agreed to terms with left winger Ondrej Palat on a $30 million, five-year contract. Palat had 52 points in 71 games during Tampa Bay’s three consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Cup Final. The Devils turned to Palat after losing the Johnny Gaudreau sweepstakes to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Washington Capitals continued their busy offseason by signing former Chicago Blackhawks forward Dylan Strome. Ottawa followed up on landing former Flyers captain Claude Giroux in free agency by locking up third-year player Josh Norris through the 2029-30 season. Griner, who pleaded guilty last week, did not testify as expected at the third day of the trial. She has been detained in Russia since February, and the U.S. government is under pressure at home to do more to secure her freedom. Her guilty plea could be an effort to expedite the court proceedings so any negotiations about a prisoner exchange could move forward. NBASL – NBA Summer League Yesterday Cleveland Cavaliers 82, Detroit Pistons 79 Chicago Bulls 89, Charlotte Hornets 73 NBA – Suns match Pacers’ offer for Ayton, keeping nucleus intact Deandre Ayton finally has his new deal from the Phoenix Suns, who simply weren’t willing to let him get away for nothing. A person with knowledge of the situation said the Suns quickly decided to match a $133 million, four-year offer sheet that Ayton agreed to earlier Thursday with the Indiana Pacers. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Suns had not publicly announced the decision. The move means the Suns keep their nucleus of Ayton and the All-Star backcourt of Devin Booker and Chris Paul. The trio pushed Phoenix to the NBA Finals in 2021. Golf – LPGA – Roussin-Weber have ace, take lead in LPGA Tour’s team event Pauline Roussin made a hole-in-one and teamed with fellow rookie Dewi Weber to take a three-stroke lead Thursday in the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, leaving Annika Sorenstam and Madelene Sagstrom five shots behind. Tied with the 51-year-old Sorenstam and Sagstrom after an opening 5-under 65 in alternate-shot play Wednesday, Roussin and Weber had a 61 at Midland Country Club in the better-ball round to reach 14-under 126. Roussin, the Frenchwoman playing on Bastille Day, aced the par-3 seventh with a 46-degree wedge. The teams will play alternate shot Friday and finish Saturday with better ball. Sorenstam and Sagstrom had a 66. Sorenstam is making her second LPGA Tour start of the year and only her third since retiring after the 2008 season. Golf – British Open – A rookie rises and Tiger crashes in slow-moving British Open The Old Course at St. Andrews was fast as ever. The same couldn’t be said for the pace of play at the British Open. The heralded start of the 150th Open featured Cameron Young making his debut with a 64. He had a two-shot lead over Rory McIlroy. And the long day could make for a short week for Tiger Woods. The two-time winner at St. Andrews had two double bogeys on his way to a 78. That’s his second-highest score ever in the Open and leaves him six shots out of the cut line. Day one of free agency in the NHL started with a bang as we got a flurry of moves right when the official window opened up at noon eastern time. There were plenty of moves that we saw coming over the last few days but we also got a few absolute stunners. Nothing was a bigger surprise than Johnny Gaudreau choosing to sign with the Columbus Blue Jackets and that's where Jason and Frank started today on the show. From there, they hit on pretty much every major move that we saw today from the way the goaltending market played out to even some of the big trades that went down in between all the big signings. Some teams came out looking really good while others, like the Vegas Golden Knights, really couldn't find a way to improve their rosters. They also talked about the big-name UFAs that didn't find new homes today like Nazem Kadri, Ondrej Palat, and John Klingberg. Frank gave us the latest on what the market looks like for those players. To wrap up the show they brought in Tyler for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by Door Dash, which sparked a great conversation about the game croquet!1:45 - Gaudreau to CBJ6:40 - The Devils & Flyers missed out11:15 - What happens in CGY?15:10 - What happened in Vegas?17:40 - Rest of the Pacific?18:55 - Wings & the 'Yzerplan'22:55 - Value signings26:10 - Palat, Klingberg, and Kadri47:20 - Grier's first offseason53:30 - Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
