Guest: Allison Dunn, Executive Business Coach, Founder of Deliberate Directions, Host of the Deliberate Leaders Podcast, Author of Think First: Stop Being the Bottleneck. Start Building Thinkers.Episode summaryAllison Dunn has spent thirty years coaching entrepreneurs and executives — over a thousand of them — and has just written her first book. But this conversation is about so much more than a business framework.Allison's premise: the most capable, most driven leaders eventually become the very bottleneck holding their organizations back. Not because they're failing — because they're succeeding in exactly the way that made them successful in the first place. They keep having the answers. And in doing so, they unintentionally teach everyone around them to stop thinking.Laurie and Allison dig into the five strategic thinking methods in Think First — and why the book reads less like a typical business book and more like a practical manual you'll actually use. But the conversation goes much deeper than the framework. Allison opens up about writing the book in the wake of losing her husband Mark and, shortly after, her mother — and what that loss taught her about legacy, about outgrowing an old version of herself, and about finally clarifying what actually matters now. This one is for anyone leading a team, a family, a household, or just their own life — and tired of being the only one solving every problem. What we cover in this episodeAllison's origin story: getting into a New England prep school at 16, being told no by her parents, and the single question her future father-in-law asked that changed the trajectory of her lifeThe unlikely, full-circle story of how Allison ended up relaunching Deliberate Directions, the same company originally founded by her late husband's fatherWhy Allison wrote Think First now, and the personal loss that made the timing undeniableThe core premise: why becoming "the answer person" is the most common — and most dangerous — habit of successful leadersMethod One: Clarify What Matters — why most of us are achieving goals without ever stepping back to ask if they're still the right goalsThe difference between addition and multiplication, and why most leaders (and most of us, in life) keep adding instead of finding leverageThe Post-it note on Allison's computer: "Is this urgent or is this important?" and how that single question changes daily decision-makingWhy having all the answers is, in Allison's words, "the worst thing you could possibly have" as a leaderA generational shift in how leaders approach balance, autonomy, and contribution ...and what Gen X is learning from the generation coming up behind themThe identity piece: why letting go of "I have to have all the answers" is so difficult, and what it actually requiresAllison's reflection on outgrowing the version of herself who had a five-year plan with Mark, and what it looks like to rebuild clarity after profound lossWhat Mark would say about Think First being out in the worldQuotable moments"Could you give it the possibility that you could earn the tuition without your parents?" — the question that changed Allison's life at 16"Having all the answers is the worst thing you could possibly have" as a leader."Is this adding or is this multiplying?""I've outgrown the old version of myself.""Too many people hold onto the version of themselves that someone else expected them to be... as things change, letting those old versions go and getting back on track to clarify what matters.""It's not my job" — on no longer carrying the weight of what other people think."It's about the journey. And when you have the time, take it."Resources + links mentioned→ Think First: Stop Being the Bottleneck. Jaime Foster is the Founder of Impact To Income and the Wellness Business Collective. As a serial entrepreneur and certified coach with over 20 years of experience, she has successfully built multiple six- and seven-figure businesses in the coaching and wellness space. Jaime is passionate about helping wellness coaches and experts grow their businesses in a sustainable and authentic way—without relying on TikTok dances or running ads. Her signature program, Close With Confidence, empowers new wellness coaches to attract clients consistently by mastering authentic marketing, sales, and mindset strategies, so they can turn their passion into a thriving business.I found her while I was researching masculine and feminine dynamics in leadership when I stumbled upon an article she wrote aptly titled Feminine vs. Masculine Leadership Styles: Which is Better? What a great question! Because we live in a patriarchal society that deeply values traits that we tend to assign as masculine, while we devalue, undervalue, overlook, and sometime cringe at traits that we tend to assign as feminine. What's worse is that we then take those traits we call masculine and feminine and then make sweeping categorizations that undermine both men and women as we somewhat lazily claim men are masculine and women are feminine. While it may be true that in general, men naturally tend to embody and lead with masculine traits, that doesn't mean they don't have or use feminine style traits – and vice versa, women can certainly more naturally embody feminine traits, but that doesn't' mean they don't have or shouldn't lead with masculine traits. In fact, because our society values it, women may tend to bury their feminine style in favor of masculine style because they see that it works. This podcast is about embracing your authentic self, so when women abandon their natural femininity in favor of masculinity it makes me sad because I believe we should be true to our nature – whether your nature is masculine or feminine at your core has no bearing on your gender – we know that there are men who are more feminine at their core and, and women who are most comfortable in their masculine energy. Which is why this discussion isn't about gender, it's about identifying which one you are at your core, and then striking a balance in your leadership style by consciously developing the opposite traits.I am speaking with Jaime because she shares a similar viewpoint and I want to dive deeper into this topic with her expertise. I will provide the link to the article that inspired me to reach out to her.Links:Jamie's article Feminine vs. Masculine Leadership Styles: Which is Better?: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/feminine-vs-masculine-leadership-styles-which-better-jaime-e-foster-js3wc/?trackingId=LGdV1JAU8V903x6I5bWYDQ%3D%3DJaime's website: https://boldedgeleadership.com/ Nominate a Driven Woman:https://live.thedrivenwomenproject.com/nominateadrivenwomanConnect with Erin Smith directly: erin@drivenbeyondexcellence.comDownload Erin's free e-book: https://live.thedrivenwomenproject.com/ebookBook a complimentary call with Erin to determine if coaching is right for you: https://api.leadconnectorhq.com/widget/bookings/virtual-coffee-chat-with-erinsmith

Exciting opportunity for small to medium business owners employing 5-30 team members. Are you ready to learn, grow, and invest in your ongoing development? Don't miss out on our latest podcast featuring a special guest who shares invaluable insights for business success. In this episode, Troy asked Brian Will, the founder of Brian Will based in United States of America, the final five questions: What does Brian think is the most challenging aspect of expanding a small business? You're going to have to check your ego and get out of your own way if you're going to grow because the reality is that if you're growing your first business, you don't know what you're doing. Brian acknowledges that this can be difficult, but he emphasizes the importance of it. And that's why you need a coach and a mentor.” Brian's favorite business book is a. Rich Dad, Poor Dad, and b. Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, and c. the E-Myth. Additionally, he emphasizes the value of lifelong learning by encouraging readers to read books and listen to podcasts that can advance their knowledge whether or not they hold a degree. Regarding professional development, Brian finds immense value in listening to positive business podcasts including podcasts by Bradley and Ed Mylett that discuss how to grow, and how to keep yourself out of trouble. Brian suggests an effective tool for small business growth is mastering accounting, getting a good mentor, and a good CRM system. He also has tools that he developed for his business that allow him to track everything inside the restaurant chain. The last thing Brian would tell himself if he could go back in time is to be patient and to keep going no matter how many times he falters since, in the end, there will always be fruit in all hard effort.
