This week I welcome the talented, genuine and generous Tom Bright onto the podcast. Tom is a musician and songwriter, who has gone from strength to strength since his debut album Self-Service Checkout in 2020. Since then he has gone on to feature on the One Show, BBC Radio 2, BBC 5 Live, Radio X, as well performing at iconic venues and festivals such as the London Palladium, Shepherd's Bush Empire and Glastonbury Festival. As well as playing his own headline shows throughout Europe, he has also supported The Libertines, The Leisure Society, Mystery Jets, Tom Grennan and Reverend & The Makers, to name but a few. His music also spent two years featuring on Spotify's 'Most Beautiful Songs in the World' playlist. Before his musical endeavours, Tom was once the UK's youngest pub landlord, and is also a former patient of Great Ormond Street Hospital, undergoing a multitude of major life-saving operations. His third album, ‘Somewhere Anywhere' - produced by Ed Harcourt and mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios - was released in October 2023 and is his most personal and reflective work to date. Tom has been a real inspiration and help to me as well as other young musicians by hosting Bright Nights, an open mic event across London that seeks to showcase new and emerging talent in the music industry. It was a pleasure to talk to him, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Our fifty-sixth (and final!) tree, Holly (Ilex aquifolium). Released to coincide with the Winter Solstice, aka the end of the rule of the Holly King, this episode celebrates a tree that is rooted in the winter celebrations of Celts, Romans, Christians, and even Cretaceous Dinosaurs! For centuries it has also fed the cattle that feeds us, it has supported generations of over-wintering birds (such as the greedy Mistle Thrush) and it has kept Goblins, Witches and arson-obsessed Cumbrian villagers at bay. Illuminated by the words of Emily Bronte, Thomas Hardy, Robert Southey and a whole collective known of historical botanists, this episode celebrates one of our undeniably great trees. There is also a VERY special Christmas present to you all, courtesy of the stunning Leisure Society. (Special thanks to Richard Hollis and Holly Newell for adding their voices, and to Bella Hardy and the Leisure Society for their musical meliflosities.) Quality is something that will stand the test of time, whether it be the materials used to create something or the little nuances that take an experience to the next level. We are joined today by two guests who have given the business world a fancy edge. We begin the hour with Jay Stein, CEO of the Dream Hotel Group, who explains why their lifestyle hotels create lasting memories. Every little touch is carefully thought out when it comes to the Dream Hotels decor, hospitality, restaurants, and entertainment, and the ambiance keeps guests coming back. Jay shares how he was able to take the lessons he learned from his parents and reflect it in his management training. Tune in for Jay’s advice on staying calm in the heat of conflict, and how to create a company culture that will unite everyone as a team. Then, if you’re sailing in the South of France or catching waves on the California Coast, you’re going to need some eyeglasses that will withstand the salty air. Shane Baum, Founder and CEO of the Leisure Society, took his passion for design and durability and created heirloom glasses that could be passed down through the generations. These frames are designed with resistance in mind - made from titanium, and plated in gold. Shane details how he stepped out on his own and created his brand from scratch after leaving a name brand designer. Hear Shane’s tips on what it takes to turn your passion into a thriving company. This week are delighted to welcome award-winning DJ, author and podcaster Gemma Cairney on The Pleasure Podcast. Her star-spangled music career has spanned 10 years. In her BBC R4 series The Sound Odyssey she travelled the world with British musicians to collaborate with local musicians of the areas they visited. She presents the BBC 6 Leisure Society interviewing cultural icons about their loves beyond what they're known for. Her Grace Jones interview for Amazing Grace won the Best Music Show Rose d'Or. Her book Open: A toolkit for how magic and messed up life can be was reviewed by The Guardian as "full of reassurance for teenagers that they are not alone, whatever they may feel". It's, in short, bloody marvellous. This year she'll be presenting at Glastonbury. An alternative format for this week! We take you through 8 tracks that Gemma has chosen as part of her special one-off Pleasure Playlist. She takes us through each track discussing the part it played in her life and how it has brought her pleasure. As we are not the BBC (we wish we were Desert Island Disks for this one) we've provided the playlist for you to listen to either alongside of after the podcast. We were so happy to have Gemma with us as she shared her insights into what music and movement can do as part of living a full and pleasurable life. We spoke about the physical and emotional release of music, how it can be a cohesive social force, a short cut to memory and about why women of colour can be often underestimated and labelled as "too much". We also look at how music can help us find our tribe, our identity and make us feel sexual and desirable. It's a light-hearted, joyful conversation on the simple pleasure of music. After 40 minutes in her company you may find yourself wanting to dance wildly to her favourite Garage tunes. The Plumbcast is so named because we are currently having an awful time with plumbers. My flat in Leith has a leak into the flat below and we've had three different fucking plumbers out to look at the thing and they just can't find anything wrong. Couple that with a general lack of desire to take on a difficult job - and after all why would you when there are far easier jobs out there for good money - and we are having a godawful fucking time with the plumbers of Edinburgh and the moment.Anyhow, domestic frustrations aside, this is a fine podcast of, for once, the very best new music. I know I am usually all over the place when it comes to the timely playing of exciting new songs, but I think this week's playlist is fairly on the ball for a change. I have stuff from the new Pictish Trail and Rick Redbeard albums - both out around now - new tunes by Anna-Anna and The Leisure Society, and a couple of fresh from the vine Toad Session recordings.Yep, we are the new NME.
