Every business owner is going to have periods of real frustration and discouragement. This can be a season where no sales are coming in. Our guest today is functional nutritionist, women's health expert, and extraordinary Incubator client Sarah Jane Sandy! Sarah had a somewhat unusual experience as a new business owner back in the early 2000s: it was actually pretty easy for her from the start. She grew up in a family that understood her business niche and had built successful businesses themselves in the holistic wellness space. She started out as a fertility expert inside a holistic business collective, which made marketing and attracting new clients fairly easy. She had great luck early on with a web designer who built a site for her with excellent SEO and easily drew organic traffic. Even though she was a hard worker, she also didn't really know what was going on in the background of her business. She'd stumbled on a business strategy that was working — but she didn't realize at the time how or why it was effective. In 2020, COVID hit, and she also had a baby. Her life changed dramatically in just a few months. And the economy and tech industry were also changing rapidly. Because Sarah wasn't familiar with the inner workings of her business, she didn't know how to respond to the shift in her energy, her focus, and the strategic needs of her business. By 2021, her business was in trouble. Today Sarah is sitting down with guest host Indira to share her story of hitting a major slump and what she transformed about her approach that has transformed her business in just two years. Many people carry a ton of preconceptions and judgments about tarot card reading. They write it off as silly or associate it with tented rooms, crystal balls, and prediction. Lacey Sites is a disruptor and a change maker in the coaching industry. This is not an uncommon practice in other industries, but it is in the business coaching world, and it's working out fantastically for Lacey: In 2021, her business A Lit Up Life made over $1 million in CASH using just their partnership and 1:1 coaching model. There's no doubt that if you're going to own your own business, there are going to be seasons where you've got to work hard. Whether it's developing a new offering, getting your website up and ready, or launching your program — sometimes you've got to go the extra mile to make things happen. But what happens when hustle becomes a lifestyle? Many of the women who come to us at the Incubator have been experiencing the long term effects of stress on the body: sleeplessness, panic attacks, inflammation, mysterious illnesses, constant worry. They want a way to break out of the nonstop grind that's diminishing their emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational wellbeing. Running a business takes stamina. It's stressful sometimes. It just is. It requires a certain capacity to accept uncertainty. Dealing with stress from work can't be about eliminating all stress — because that's unreasonable and impossible. Practical advice about addressing burnout from work has to be rooted in the reality that business, just like the rest of life, moves in seasons. Learning how to identify and respond to what your body, mind, and spirit are telling you can bring a huge shift in dealing with stress from work and healing the long term effects of stress on the body. In entrepreneurial circles these days, you're likely to hear plenty of talk about creating a positive mindset. Change your mindset, change your life ... right? But when it comes time to change the behavior, it's not uncommon to discover just how stubborn and sticky our patterns (and the thoughts that underlie them) can be. So, if your thoughts become your reality ... and you're having trouble shifting your reality ... then you can be fairly certain that it isn't the behavior that needs your initial focus, but rather the thoughts that come before the behavior. In other words, if you want to change your results, then you've got to address the thoughts that make up the mindset. And changing your thoughts is not just like flipping a switch. At Team KK, we're big believers in the idea that words matter, and that being thoughtful about our desires can have a significant impact on the quality of our experiences. Today, we're bringing you behind the scenes to our annual planning meeting as we wrap up Season 2 of the podcast and look ahead to our hopes for the company and ourselves in the coming year! Part of what we like to do at the close of each year is to just take some time to take stock, to look back, and to name our desires for the year ahead. And part of this process involves setting intentions with a Word of the Year. This ritual each year isn't complicated, but it's definitely one of my favorites. It might seem simple to encapsulate your desire in a Word of the Year, but it's actually a really vulnerable and empowering exercise. You're putting yourself out there, and you're sharing what that means with your team or your loved ones, and it sparks this energy of creation. Setting your intentions with your whole heart is a way to tune into what matters most to you, and as part of our annual process at Team KK, it also means that we get to support each other in being able to feel our best inside of our work. Today we're sharing how we do this exercise, what setting intentions for the coming year means for us, and what the Word of the Year is for each of us as we head into 2023! In November 2021, I sent an email to my list with a big, scary announcement. I was letting them know that I was retiring my 21 Days to Impact program and my 6-Figure Blog Academy program and integrating them into a single, all-encompassing, deep-dive program that's now the Success With Soul Incubator, which I had launched in March 2021. Here's the thing: these were my most successful programs. They had allowed me to consistently bring in $50K months on autopilot. The Incubator was in its baby phase. I had no idea if it was going to get traction. At that time, Indira was our new COO, and she said what I think a lot of people were thinking: What's going on? Why on earth would you let go of what's working in favor of a total unknown? After all, this move went against ALL the conventional business advice: It was removing a known "winner" in favor of an untested offering It was putting all my program eggs into one metaphorical basket It was not following the standard hierarchy of offering low-, mid-, and high-ticket items Today, Indira and I are talking about why I decided to do this, why I couldn't push away that draw to try something new in my business (again!), and why I believe taking business risks is an essential part of choosing to be an entrepreneur. In her 22 years in corporate life, Melissa Therrien has heard a similar story from so many women in business: they're successful, but they rarely feel alive. Bront'e Singleton is no stranger to trying — and struggling — to learn a new language. She downloaded all of the apps. Bookmarked all of the blogs and Youtube channels. Sometimes it's easy for women business owners to get caught up in this idea that in order to be successful, they have to "win" at playing the game that male entrepreneurs have been playing for so long. You don't have to look too far to see how often entrepreneurs who are practitioners of one kind or another transition to creating a mentoring business to help other practitioners in their field. I've done it (and love it!), and our guest today is another example of someone who has made the move from practitioner to mentor — and who has learned how to create a whole other thriving branch of her business. Sabrina Gebhardt started out as a lifestyle photographer, and she has built a very successful business around that gift. She started feeling the pull to come alongside other photographers and show them how to go from "starving artist" to "abundant entrepreneur." Et viola, the idea for a mentoring business was born. In November 2021, she joined the Success With Soul Incubator, and that's when her mentoring business really started to thrive.
