Patrick Muzingo grew up with a pedigree of hardcore Southern California skate culture. By his early teens he was drumming in countless punk bands, sometimes having to sit outside when he wasn't on stage because of his age. When we say punk bands, we mean bands like The Atoms, Americas Hardcore, and Decry. But his path in punk rock bands made an unlikely turn in 1986 when he joined Junkyard. Drawing comparisons to Guns N' Roses, Junkyard perfectly mixed heavy rock and blues with a hint of southern boogie music. Not exactly what you'd expect from a guy growing up on punk rock and skateboards. On episode 099, Pat joins Jamie to discuss his early years as a drummer, the formation of Junkyard, signing to Geffen Records, touring the world on a 3-piece kit, and he finally answers the question about his kit's "unique" set up. Pat and Jamie are also both Los Cabos Drumsticks artists, so there's some brotherly banter about gear as well. Pat is a fantastic drummer with loads of great stories and advice for everyone. This is one you don't want to miss.
“For me, I agree that we don’t want to be a novelty” Sam is the drummer of melodic death/thrash metal band Dead Asylum and writer for Drumeo. She has toured a lot in her twenty years of playing the drums, including Europe and all over North America. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Sam now lives in Montreal where she works from home and can take her work life on the road as well. I asked Sam to be on the show for a couple of reasons. One being the fact that we actually work together. She is the person who takes these show notes and posts them to Drumeo Beat each week. We frequently email due to our work but have never had a conversation, so I thought to myself, “why not establish that connection over a podcast!?” The other reason is because I have interviewed only a handful of women on this show and I want to feature more women on this podcast. Sam exhibits a great deal of professionalism through her drumming and her writing. Her career is a fantastic example of the modern drummer fusing more than one skill into creating a sustainable career within this often difficult industry. Sam endorses Sabian Cymbals, Mapex Drums and Los Cabos Drumsticks. You Will Hear About…. The reality of being a female drummer Why Sam chose drums and about her formative years as a drummer External vs Internal motivation Risk vs reward Being an eternal student with music Metalhead culture Perfectionism Living with your own work for long periods of time Why Should You Listen? I think that in many people’s minds there is an elephant in the room when it comes to female drummers. Maybe a couple. Both are addressed in this episode. One being the reality of being a female drummer in an industry that is - and has largely been - dominated by men for many years. What do these women have to put up with from the ignorance of both women and men? It must become incredibly frustrating to hear such things as, “oh, you must be the singer!”, or “oh how nice, is this snare drum a gift for your boyfriend?” It hasn’t quite become a thing yet where when people see a woman carrying drum equipment that it might actually belong to them. Imagine that! The other point mentioned is in regards to objectifying women. Again, it is a male dominated industry. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many people watching women play drums are men. I think you know where I am going with this — don’t you? Yes, the age old saying, “men are pigs”, while it shouldn’t be a generalization, still holds for many men. Sam shares the odd requests that she receives privately from guys. It does enforce the saying mentioned above and, unfortunately, she is treated this way. While the frequency of these requests aren’t disclosed, the fact that it happens at all is disappointing. I hope that the men who listen to this show, which is the majority audience, considers this and if they do happen to see something online publicly that is unacceptable that something is said to prevent this from happening more than it already does. This episode is from a YouTube segment I do called Brewdiments. Find links to that channel and the video version on my website, www.therockdr.com Basically, there was too much gold in this conversation with Chris Gormley for me to not share it with y'all. So here's the full interview for your earholes. After a couple hours of private study with him, we talk shop on drums, rudiments for warmup, stretches and preventative exercise for the modern drummer and then we rip some calypso for one of my band's tune titled "Home". Chris, thank you for your time and great insight. Los Cabos Drumsticks, you're always rad and Dream Cymbals, you treated us right too. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking for great drum-related gear.
Welcome back to another episode of the DrumGAB podcast! This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Philip Guay from Los Cabos Drumsticks in this mini podcast episode. A little bit about Los Cabos Los Cabos is a family run operation from New Brunswick, Canada. They have been in operation since 2005, however, it was a wood working business that had been around for years before it became Los Cabos operating as Lawrence Wood Products. Originally the shop produced spindles and business was very good. But eventually the clients took their business to China and things fell apart pretty quickly forcing the company to find another way. They had all the tools they needed to start making drumsticks and so they did. Phil's parents hustled those drumsticks wherever they could making road trips out of it. It's a pretty cool little story and I always like hearing about the ma and pa small business stories. The company also makes a conscious effort to reduce waste by using their wood scraps to heat the shop with their wood stove in the cold winter months, selling their “wood nubbins” to a company that makes fire starters and lastly by donating their sawdust to a local farmer to provide bedding to the farmer’s horses. Los Cabos is also the only drum stick manufacturer that offers a Red Hickory line that is available in most models in their regular Hickory line. Red Hickory offers an advantage over the regular Hickory in that the wood molecules are denser and thus a little bit heavier and offer more durability over the regular Hickory and Maple lines. I currently use these Red Hickory sticks and so far I am loving them. Who is Phil? Phil Guay is the Resource Manager and Artist Relations Representative for Los Cabos. A Canadian Armed Forces Vet, Phil served our country for ten years before working for his family business. Concluding Thoughts It is no secret that I am a very proud Canadian. With that bias aside, these are great drumsticks. I am the kind of person that just likes shit that works and doesn’t have gimmicks attached to it. That goes for anything, just to be clear. I am just kind of a simple no frills type of person. These sticks feel incredibly natural and “real” in my hand. They are well balanced and their drumstick line has everything I would personally want. I have been using these sticks for a short while and I have made up my mind that I will only buy Los Cabos sticks going forward. Another point I will make is that my wife and I run a ma and pa flower shop in a small Canadian community, I have empathy for family run businesses and I want to support that. It is fantastic that the sticks are great and that I like how they perform, but the fact that they are Canadian, offer a no frills product, retail for a fair price and finally because it is a family run business. Robb Ryan is a deep pool of knowledge. He will forget more than I will ever know about playing the drums. In this interview we go into every little nook and cranny about his past, present and future, uncovering a sprawling 30+ year career behind the kit. Currently, Robb is a private drum teacher, recording artist, clinician, online educator, blog writer, father and husband. He explains that time management and knowing your goals is the key to balance a heavy workload with positive results. He is endorsed by Mapex Drums, Dream Cymbals, Los Cabos Drumsticks and Aquarian drum heads. In the late spring last year Robb had developed Rhythmic Vocabulary (Instagram tag @rhythmicvocabulary). Under this moniker, Robb has written articles for Drumeo, 180Drums, theblackpage.net, Canadian Musician Magazine and the Los Cabos educational page. Also in April this year he will be appearing for his first time as a drum instructor for Drumeo in some recorded lessons! He also has some recording projects on the go with artists ranging from pop music, metal and even D&B. Hard to believe that in 9 months Robb has established himself so firmly in the drum industry, and this is only the beginning for Robb. While all of these successes have propelled him into some major canals in the drumming industry, he remains humble and courteous. I asked about any records that he may have bought lately. He is currently listening to David Bowie's Black Star album (which comes highly recommended), Tower of Power, Galactic and Maggie Koerner. Enjoy Episode 2 of DrumGAB Podcast!
