Rob's musical journey began at an early age in a small town outside of Buffalo, NY. Starting out in the cover scene, Rob quickly developed an appreciation for a solid back beat and playing for the song. An approach to drumming that he still considers the foundation for his style today. Later settling in Atlanta, GA, Rob's drumming quickly gained attention in the rock underground. Rob spent many years touring and recording with Atlanta rockers "Rockets to Ruin" and toured with "Gunfire 76" featuring "Murderdolls" frontman Wednesday 13. Rob also maintains a busy schedule of recording and working with many different bands and artists throughout the country. In April, 2010, Rob was offered the drum position in the multi-platinum selling rock band Skid Row. When asked about his new gig Hammersmith answered "Having always been a fan, it is an honor to be asked to join the band. The band's music and history holds a special place in both my life, and the lives of so many loyal fans. To be a part of that history is the chance of a lifetime."

Joel Prime joins me from London to discuss his musical journey which began after he received his first set of drums for Christmas when he was three years old. He initially taught himself the basics, then began lessons with John Zac when he was 6, and by age 11, Joel was playing regular gigs. Joel's drumming prowess was immediately evident, and by being taught by many of Adelaide's elite drum educators, attending Marryatville High School, which offers a fabulous SIMC program, combined with a solid regime of practice, he soon developed his sparkling technique. Joel's acquired skill through hard work and persistence became his entrée card to a world of musical diversity. In his teens Joel was part of the Marryatville High School Stage Band, the group travelled for performances in London, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and Sydney. These gigs paved the way for Joel to share the stage with such performers as Bob Mintzer, James Morrison, Bobby Shew, John Hoffman, Rhonda Burchmore, Jon Gordon, Tony Kofi, Alina Bzhezhinska, Ray Vega, Paul Bollenback, George Garzone and Pharoah Sanders. He was inspired to begin percussion after seeing his teacher Steve Todd performing together with his son Ben, in the popular Adelaide band 'Goose'. Joel took a break from studying music in the last 2 years of high school, and for a while was contemplating becoming a pilot, thankfully his love of music returned and he successfully auditioned for the The Elder Conservatorium of Music, at the University of Adelaide, where he was taught by another previous BAND IT ABOUT guest Laurie Kennedy. In 2005, he was awarded most outstanding percussionist at Generations in Jazz by James Morrison. In 2008, he received a prestigious performance award from Downbeat magazine (USA) as a member of the 2008 Adelaide University Big Band 1. Later that year, Joel received the Helpmann Academy Award for Jazz Drums, for graduating at the top of his class at the Elder Conservatorium in 2006 and 2007, then received the 2010 Helpmann Academy Award for most outstanding Honours graduate. Joel has led percussion workshops and performed at WOMADelaide, Glastonbury Festival, London Jazz Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and The Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Joel's burgeoning skill set continues to be recognized by the drumming elite. Joel is currently endorsed by Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads. In 2011 he won the award for Australia's Best Up and Coming Drummer (Open age category) at Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend. It was Joel's parents who initially floated the idea of him going overseas to expand his music career, and as he already had a British passport, moving to London was the obvious choice. Joel didn't know anyone in London, so it took a while for him to begin to get work, but once his talents were seen at the open jam nights that he was regularly attending, he began to receive job offers. Joel is a member of the critically acclaimed 'Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet', who have appeared at the Jazz Legend Festival in Birmingham and many other venues around the UK including top London jazz clubs The Crypt and The Vortex. They appeared at the London Jazz Festival 2017 in a triple bill performance along with Coltrane' s specialist Denys Baptist and the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. Joel's versatility across congas, drum kit and all manner of Afro Cuban and Brazilian percussion now sees him performing with a vast array of ensembles across many musical styles. Joel also performs with 'Mr Little's Noisy Band' and 'London Street Band.' Music: "Band It About" theme song written & recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. We're back with a new episode, and we're excited to announce our new partnership with Top Shelf Music! On today's podcast we are joined by Rob Hammersmith, drummer for multi-platinum selling rock band Skid Row. Rob's musical journey began at an early age after a family trip to see Roy Orbison. Soon after that concert he got his first drum kit and crafted a makeshift "drum cage" out of PVC pipe. He was immediately hooked, and before long Rob was playing in cover bands in upstate New York. He quickly developed an appreciation for a solid back beat and playing for the song, an approach to drumming that he still considers the foundation for his style today. His early influences, and still some of his favorites to date, were drumming greats John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Phil Rudd of ACDC. Rob also sites Mickey Curry as a major influence. Originally from the small town of Olean, NY, Rob later settled in Atlanta, GA, and quickly gained attention in the rock underground. After several years of touring and recording with the Atlanta rock band 'Rockets to Ruin' and touring with 'Gunfire 76' (featuring Murderdolls frontman Wednesday 13), Rob was offered the drum position in Skid Row in April of 2010. The band has since toured several times nationally and internationally and has recorded two EPs of a three part trilogy, United World Rebellion - Chapter 1 and Rise of the Damnation Army - Chapter 2. A full-length album, third installment of the trilogy is currently being recorded. This year the band celebrated the 30th anniversary of their iconic hard rock masterpiece, Slave to the Grind by playing a handful of shows performing the album in its entirety. We find out what Rob's been up to as of late and talk about when touring will start up again, his influences, and the new album in the works. We also talk about food (Sushi), motorcycles, and Skunk asks a very important question. Derrek Phillips grew up in the bay area of San Francisco, CA, in a home filled with music of all genres. Some of his earliest memories are playing percussion on whatever pot or pan he found in the kitchen to the records of Sly and the Family Stone, Metallica, and Digital Underground. Derrek met his wife at a local bay-area high school band competition while she was playing trombone. His interest in playing all types of percussion allowed him to play in community orchestras, drum and bugle corps, including studying with the late, great, jazz drummer, Tony Williams. His love for music took him east, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from William Patterson University in New Jersey. After years of honing his skills in and around the New York jazz scene, Derrek's dreams of continuing his professional music career led him to Nashville. He has played and toured with such acts as Bonnie Tyler, Dr. John, Alison Kraus, James Otto, Delbert McClinton, Charlie Hunter, The McCrary Sisters, and many others. A two-time Grammy winner, his percussion skills can be heard on the "Nashville" TV show, along with soundtracks by Vanessa Williams and Michael McDonald. In 2014, Derrek joined Hank Williams Jr.'s band and he currently plays and tours with country music sensation Brett Eldredge. Derrek and I sat down one sunny summer day in 2020 on the porch of Moo Country in Leiper's Fork, TN. We discussed the influence his parents had on encouraging his musical ability and how the coronavirus pandemic is impacting professional tour musicians. He's endorsed by Pearl Drums, Istanbul Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Alclair Audio ear monitors, Drum Dots, Stack Ring Percussion, and Vater Sticks. Sit back and enjoy this episode with one of country music's most energetic and talented drummers.
We go back to post World War 2 Japan and learn about the origins of Pearl as a music stand manufacturer in 1946. They then entered the world of drums in the 50's and began to rise to the drum company that we know today by creating "stencil drums" for over 30 other brand names, including CB-700 and Apollo, before creating the iconic Pearl "Presidents Series" in 1966. Raymond Massey is the Director of Product Development and gives us an extensive run through of each decade of this iconic drum brand. Pearl has been a family owned brand for almost 75 years and has continued to push the boundaries of innovation and quality since the first drum left the factory. This episode has been in the works for over a year and I am very happy to get it out in the world and share the history of Pearl. Enjoy!

Buttshaker Bonanza It's been quite a while since we've talked about turning the low frequency effects from your movies and tv shows into physical movement you can feel in your furniture. We reviewed a system many years ago and loved it, but it was pricey at the time and neither of us ended up installing it. Turns out Amazon has some options that make it affordable enough to put the buttshaker experience in a lot more seats. Clark Synthesis “Originally developed for military and commercial training simulators, Clark Synthesis transducers were specifically designed to transfer sounds like gunshots and explosions into a tactile experience that can be felt as well as heard. This technology was enthusiastically received by the video gaming community. Gamers of all ages love the intensified sensory experience of competing in a gaming chair with a Clark Synthesis transducer.” Clark Synthesis TST239 Silver Tactile Transducer Bass Shaker 3.4 out of 5 stars Price: $157.95 “The TST239 Silver Transducer is an excellent choice for most entry-level audio applications. This product is widely used in the game chair market, providing solid performance at an affordable price. The TST239 Silver can be used in some home theater applications. The TST239 Silver requires an amplifier for operation.” Clark Synthesis TST429 Platinum Transducer 5.0 out of 5 stars Price: $549.95 “The TST429 Platinum Professional Transducer is the most powerful audio transducer on the market today. Available only from Clark Synthesis, the TST429 provides the ultimate performance and output of full-fidelity, full-frequency sound with a frequency response from 5hz to 17kHz. This premium transducer is designed to meet the demands of audio applications such as high-end home theater furniture, theater risers and platforms, floors (including dance floors), simulators, gaming systems, and ProSound equipment.” ButtKicker by Guitammer “[Guitammer]'s innovative and award-winning line of patented ButtKicker-brand low frequency audio transducers let users feel low-frequency sound (bass) and are musically accurate, powerful and virtually indestructible. They are used around the world by leading entertainment and theater companies such as: AMC Theatres, Regal Entertainment, Alamo Drafthouse, IMAX, Disney and Lumiere Pavilions in movie theaters and attractions; by world-famous musicians; and in home theaters, by consumers for video games, simulators and car audio and are distributed by Pearl Drums for musicians.” ButtKicker BK-LFE Low Frequency Effects System 4.7 out of 5 stars Price: $239.99 “The only tactile transducer designed specifically to take advantage of the 0.1 and LFE (low frequency effects) channels, the ButtKicker LFE features extended low-frequency response for powerful bass and special effects. If you are looking to delight and electrify yourself and others with an affordable and easy-to-use solution, now is the time to incorporate the ButtKicker into your sound-system's design and feel what you've been missing. The ButtKicker LFE Low Frequency Effects System utilizes a patented magnetic suspension and can be used in couches, theater seating, platforms, and any type of structure. Different from other shakers or tactile transducers that use voice coil technology, the ButtKicker is much more powerful, more musical (linear), and offers true infrasonic, or low-frequency response with a resonant frequency of 9 Hz. The ButtKicker LFE utilizes a small, linear motor, which reacts to an audio signal sent by an amplifier.” ButtKicker BK-GR Gamer 3.8 out of 5 stars Price: $178.85 “The ButtKicker [Gamer] is a small linear motor that reacts to an audio signal sent by an amplifier. The ButtKicker Gamer comes with its own 90-watt amplifier that is convection-cooled with vents so there's no noisy fan. It also includes a wired remote control so you can stash the amp out of sight and still operate its core features. It is similar to a loudspeaker, but instead of a moving a cone and transferring sound waves through the air, the ButtKicker Gamer is attached to your seat and sends a low frequency sound directly into your body.” SoundShaker “Introducing the SoundShaker, a revolution in home theater entertainment. This exciting piece of hi-tech wizardry will allow you to feel the screen action, without leaving the comfort of your seat! Immerse yourself in your favorite films or video games like never before: you will not only see and hear but live each moment as your chair vibrates to each car chase or explosion. A whole new dimension in cinema thrills awaits.” SoundShaker Wireless Bass Shaker Amplifier for Home Theater Seating Vibration Kit 3.4 out of 5 stars Price: Amp: $439.00 Single Bass Shaker: $125.00 Sold in sets, e.g.: Amp with one bass shaker: $564.00 ... “Your Soundshaker system works using a simple three-step process. Receiver sends the wireless audio to the amplifier that is hooked up to your home theater seating. The SoundShaker Amplifier receives the wireless audio signal and transfers it to your soundshaker. The SoundShaker Unit receives the audio signal and vibrates your home theater seat.” HT Guys: This one requires a bit of explanation. The system bills itself as Wireless, which it totally is, but maybe not how you'd expect. They provide a transmitter that somehow sends the audio from your receiver over your WiFi network. They say “WiFi” - so we assume it connects to your existing network, but we don't know for sure. That audio WiFi signal is sent to the amplifier and the amplifier is wired into the shakers. If you have one piece of furniture to vibrate, or a couple that are close to each other, it could work great. If not, it is unclear if you can use multiple amps with one transmitter, or use multiple transmitters in the same room, etc. Others AuraSound AST-2B-4 Pro Bass Shaker Tactile Transducer 4.5 out of 5 stars Amazon's Choice for "bass shaker" Price: $57.85 “The AuraSound AST-2B-4 Pro Bass Shaker literally sends sonic vibrations through the material to which it is attached, enabling you to feel the earth-shaking bass from your music, movies, or video game soundtracks.” HT Guys: This system reviews really well and is quite affordable. It requires you run wires to your furniture, so that may be a limiting factor for some. It is also a bit in the DIY category and requires you provide the correct amplification to make the transducers work. But if you can connect the right subwoofer amp to it … and if you can find a way to make that subwoofer amp somehow run wirelessly … you might be able to build your own DIY SoundShaker system for less money. Dayton Audio TT25-8 PUCK Tactile Transducer Mini Bass Shaker 4.2 out of 5 stars Price: $19.62 “Dayton Audio's TT25-8 PUCK is a small, 8 ohm tactile transducer or mini bass shaker that is intended to be used in home theater, gaming, and auto sound applications.” HT Guys: This one is small and super affordable. We don't know if that means cheap in quality as well as price, but for under $20, it isn't a huge gamble to try it out. The small size may mean you need more of them to really get any impact in a larger piece of furniture. Cowson Technology “No home theater is complete without Crowson Tactile Motion. You will find Crowson 4D Theater Actuators in the finest dedicated home theaters in the world. Available through select seating partners or as retro-fit solutions.” HT Guys: Crowson provided the gear we reviewed many years ago. They make great technology. You can get it through a dealer near you or buy it yourself online through Crowson's website (we couldn't find them on Amazon). Online prices run from $498 for a single actuator to $2498 for a set of four actuators and the dedicated amp to run them.

Welcome to another episode of the DrumGAB podcast! This week we are speaking to J-Rod Sullivan from the Atlanta based jazz fusion group, The 4 Korners. J-Rod is also the man behind “Got Pocket” apparel. We talk about creating opportunities for yourself, how education can serve a player, diversifying within your industry and influencing others in a positive way. J-Rod plays Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals and Vic Firth drum sticks. Who is J-Rod? J-Rod began exploring rhythm and drums at the very young age of two years old and stuck with him ever since. Over the years of playing church services, his roots in music are R&B and gospel music. Currently he is the drummer for the Atlanta based jazz fusion group The 4 Korners. Throughout his experiences with this band, he has found a way to apply what he already understood musically and refine his approach and sound to meet the high demands of performing jazz fusion. J-Rod also studied at AIM to further his understanding of music. J-Rod studied during the time that Tom Knight was faculty, who is a past guest and dear friend of DrumGAB. Overall, J-Rod possesses the spirit of music and wishes to inspire as many people as possible with his gift. Key Moments in this Episode - J-Rod explains the story behind how he became the drummer for The 4 Korners. A trip to Best Buy lead to a call which lead to him to join the band. It is a story that shows that opportunities are created and earned, not gifted. - J-Rod spent most of his musical life not understanding how to read music, knowing what it was he played or why he played it. He decided to change that by attending AIM. J-Rod explains how attending school served him well and how it was also a significant challenge for him. - We get back to The 4 Korners and the bands’ writing process for new compositions. J-Rod breaks down their organic and open formula to create their music. - Besides being a musician, J-Rod also programs live shows and produces artists under the name “J-Rod Sullivan Productions”. J-Rod talks about how he began doing this type of work and what programming a live show is. - J-Rod also teaches drum lessons online and so I ask about the challenges with instructing a Skype lesson and the benefits and deficits of an online lesson versus an in person lesson. - We talk about how it is his hope to inspire people all over the world with his music. I ask him if there is anything else that he does in life that can affect people like his drumming does. Concluding Thoughts At the end of the day you have to recognize your passions and keep them a priority in your life. Once you develop your craft you then have to begin creating opportunities for yourself and somehow make it your career. Jerrod had a strategy in mind when he asked Clarence and Isaac to help him out with a gig. He wanted to put himself in front of the people that he admires and if the opportunity ever happened, be in the band. Between that milestone and the fact that he went to AIM to up his theory and learn how to read music, constantly diversifying in other areas of the music industry and teaching online….J-Rod is cornering his success. J-Rod is living in his purpose and spreading positivity around with the gift that he has. In this episode we are joined by Warrant guitarist, Joey Allen. We talk about Warrant’s current touring, what Robert Mason brings to the fold, when we can expect a follow up to Rockaholic, possible solo music from Joey, our mutual love of Dog Eat Dog, how he started working for Pearl Drums, the weirdest ‘thing’ he has autographed, and a lot more. There is some slight feedback early on for about a minute, but once that clears up it is smooth sailing. The back end of the interview with Joey features a soundtrack of some kick ass beats from Warrant drummer Steven Sweet during his soundcheck. Before we get into the talk with Joey we discuss new music from Sevendust, The Winery Dogs, Trivium, and Children of Bodom. We also play a track from a great Oklahoma independent band, Dryvr. Thanks for listening, and please share!
this track was about hypnotic groove with clear sounds combining sexiness with the innocence of children. We made it with Roland Jupiter 8, Prophet 5, ARP 2600 eventide harmonizer. Non electronic instruments are Pearl Drums, Timbales, Kramer Bass, Fender Stratocaster. All vocals Joya
Nashville is a town just bubbling over with music, musicians, and musical instrument companies. In Episode 18, I talked about Rock Block guitars and other guitar related endeavors. Well, what I didn't know is that Pearl Drums were also located in Nashville and that a friend of mine who lives in the area happened to just purchase a custom Pearl Drum set based on Pearl's Reference series. As you can imagine, I jumped at a chance to see it, play it and talk about it, so in Episode 19 I sat down with Chris of the band Saturn Rising to discuss his new kit. The kit itself is just stunning to look at. The shells are a beautifully customized Blue fading to natural wood grain color and each shell is quite heavy (for Hi-Res pictures click Here). When my friend Chris handed me the snare drum, I was quite surprised at the weight. I don't think that I had even picked up a marching snare that was as heavy as this drum. Then he turned it over to reveal the twenty ply (yes, twenty!) shell. It looked as if some on had taken a tree that was a decent diameter and hollowed out the center. Being the guitar enthusiast that I am, I appreciate the tonal differences that fine wood choices and workman ship can make, and I was pleased to hear (with my own two ears) that wood and craftsmanship make a huge difference, a even on an instrument that built to be hit. I really enjoy the tone of a well tuned drum kit, and this kit is very musical. As I listened to Chris demoing the kit, I was reminded of the huge drum sounds of some of my favorite drummers like John Bonham and Keith Moon thundering around their kits and using dynamics to make subtle statements in the songs they drove. This episode was once again produced with Bossjock Studio and the iRig mic. I know I have been talking about it a lot, but I really like the freedom that both products have allotted me. To record the episode, Chris and I sat on a couch in his drum room with the mic positioned between us. We did a couple checks to select the right volume setting on the iRig mic and then we just hit record and started going. Monitoring the levels during recording I am sure I had some clipping (which I will discover when I listen back to the show) and in hindsight, I should have probably back the mic off of us by another six inches or so, but hey....it was spontaneous and creative, and that is the joy of podcasting in general. I also captured the sound bites of the kit in this similar fashion. For a better representation on how this kit sounds, see the YouTube video below. As I keep using these new tools, I plan to refine my techniques. For theses early episodes however, I wanted to keep the "Pirate Radio" spirit very much in the forefront and just focus on doing a show live. I almost did not bring my iRig mic with me to Nashville. When I fly anywhere, I really try to keep my carryon light and only carry things that I would need immediately if I got stuck in the airport. After this trip I can confidently say that the iRig mic was a good choice to bring with me and could possibly be considered in the "need" category. Again, I know I have talked a lot about about Bossjock and the iRig mic since Episode 14 and I can promise you that I am not receiving any kind of compensation for talking about them. I truly like these products. Anytime I get new a tool that speeds up or improves how I work, I get excited and quite vocal about said product. That said, I am going to do my best to keep quiet about it ( at least for a few episodes), but maybe in the future I will do a segment on every show about how that particular show was put together.
