Freada Kapor Klein and Mitch Kapor's work began as it has continued—trying to level the corporate playing field. In the early 1980s, Mitch founded Lotus Development, and later brought in Freada to make the company “the most progressive employer in the U.S.,” as he says in today's episode. Both of them had a personal interest in closing these gaps—Growing up, Mitch was not terribly well socialized and often did not fit in, something which became a large part of his identity. As an entrepreneur, he saw an opportunity to create a workplace culture where everybody would have the chance to be accepted for who they were. Freada, on the other hand, had family history, experience as an activist and an in-progress Ph.D. in social policy and research behind her interest in changing the corporate setting. Now, the pair serve as founding partners of Kapor Capital and have recently published a book, Closing the Equity Gap, discussing the changes that need to be made to the standard investment model. Freada, Mitch and Brilliant Thoughts host Tristan Ahumada discuss the impact of several of the gap-closing companies mentioned in the book, the opportunities they found through their focus on gap closing and the current societal divisiveness. ---- Mentioned: Bitwise Industries Promise Pay HealthSherpa Numerade Daivergent Freada Kapor Klein and Mitch Kapor are the authors of Closing the Equity Gap: Creating Wealth and Fostering Justice in Startup Investing. James Marlow, the new President of  Southface Institute joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to talk about Southface, the importance of the EarthCraft program, sustainable development and upcoming 2022 news. Marlow joins host Carol Morgan on the All About Real Estate segment. A Georgia native, Marlow grew up in the little town of Lincolnton, settled between Athens and Augusta. An Atlanta resident since 1986, Marlow possesses an extensive travel background to support his career in technology, working with big names such as IBM, Yahoo and Lotus Development. A Co-Founder of Radiance Solar, Marlow conducted solar installations across the Southeast and beyond during his time as CEO. While possessing a colorful resume that spans several decades, Southface Institute was a part of Marlow's life long before became president. While still a resident in Lincolnton, Marlow wrote the company requesting additional information about solar energy to feed his growing interest in sustainability. Following his move to Atlanta and through his relationship with Southface, Marlow received his first exposure to LED lightbulbs, electric vehicles, energy-efficient appliances, advanced recycling and more. Southface Institute also hosted the very first Atlanta BeltLine public meeting. Marlow said, “Southface Institute is a thought-leader and an innovator, a convener and a connector of new technologies and ways to save money and also reduce your environmental impact, energy and water consumption and your waste.” EarthCraft is a building standard to help builders improve the air quality, energy use and energy conservation in a home, business or multi-family facility. The program was created and developed through a partnership with the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association to ensure EarthCraft was grounded in sciences and economics while positively working for both environmentalists and home builders. The program's ultimate goal is to produce healthy, happy and high-performance constructions while keeping in mind life-cycle costs, potential energy requirements and more. The investments made on the front end will save owners money over course of the construction's life while also significantly reducing potential energy and environmental costs. Marlow said, “EarthCraft builders are people who really know what they're doing. They go to training and send their staff to train and are always keeping abreast of new technologies and ways of doing things.” While a popular buzzword with many people, sustainability has been a part of the Southface Institute business practice for over 40 years. Treating it as a core value and a part of the company ethos, the systems thinkers at Southface Institute consistently consider how the complex systems of a home, building or affordable housing unit work together. This spans the mechanics, lighting and electricity of a construction. When constructed to EarthCraft standards, added aspects such as double-paned windows, LED lighting and water-conserving appliances lead to slight premiums during the initial home purchase but result in monumental savings throughout the construction's lifetime.  Tune in to the full interview above for more information about the EarthCraft program and Southface Institute or visit www.Southface.org.  Never miss an episode of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio! Join Sal's Investment Syndicate: Click to Join Ed Belove is a very active angel investor. He's a successful founder in software and hardware. Just a very thoughtful person. Very, very smart, very observant, very committed. Founders would be very lucky to have Ed Belove in their corner. I really enjoyed this interview, which I recorded in the first season of the podcast. And it is a very, very meaty interview. Full of interesting stories. For example, helping build Lotus with Mitch Kapor and all sorts of other things. So, it's a little bit of history of the software industry. A lot of wisdom about building a company and an introduction to just a tremendous, tremendous angel investor and person. I highly recommend the conversation with Ed Belove. As an undergrad at Harvard, Ed Belove hung out with people at the campus radio station that liked to play with computers. This eventually led to a brilliant career that included building software products with the visionary Mitch Kapor at Lotus Development. Ed co-founded a company that greatly expanded the Apple II’s ability to communicate. The company would eventually pivot to supplying the hardware for early Internet services such as CompuServe and AOL. This successful trajectory allowed Ed to dedicate his time to building early-stage companies and doing philanthropic work. As a much sought-after angel investor, Ed puts his capital and energy to work on behalf of promising startups. If you are building a software startup, you would be well served to listen to the thoughts Ed expresses in this podcast. Rick Faulk knew what it took to ramp sales for a venture backed software company. He'd done exactly that for WebEx prior to its sale to Cisco. Then he was asked to do the same thing as co-CEO for three merged social software companies. Listen in as Rick shares what he learned from this cat rodeo about M&A diligence, merging corporate cultures and decisive leadership. My Guest Rick Faulk has more than 30 years of experience in executive management, sales and marketing in the software industry. He's worked for some of the world’s most successful SaaS and technology companies, including Lotus Development, j2 Global, Cisco, WebEx, Intranets.com and PictureTel. Currently Rick is the Chairman and CEO of Intronis, a provider of white label cloud storage solutions.  Prior to Intronis, Rick was General Manager of Cloud Services for Sales & Marketing at j2 Global. As President & co-CEO of Mzinga, Rick worked to merge two learning management software companies with a social networking software company. Immediately prior to Mzinga, Rick was Chief Marketing Officer of WebEx Communications and President of WebEx Small Business, where he was responsible for the company’s worldwide go-to-market and customer acquisition strategies. Rick currently sits on the boards of Yodle, SkillSurvey, Bidding4Good and BatteryCorp and is an advisor to other start-up businesses. Rick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University. The Take Home Lessons My conversation with Rick centered on his experience at Mzinga. The Company is still operating, but did not achieve the market success that Rick and the venture capital investors had hoped for.  It's a strong niche player in social learning and customer communities, but all involved had hoped for much greater growth and market presence. Rick boiled down the lessons he learned into a few headlines: You've really got to dig in and do your own diligence when companies are being merged. Ask the hard questions and search for the skeletons in closets. While it seems obvious, there needs to be real clarity about the future direction of the merged company.  Leadership then has to step up and make the hard decisions to move in that direction, i.e. goals, responsibilities, compensation all have to be in alignment.  Compromise isn't necessarily a good thing. Co-CEOs and merged management teams can make alignment particularly difficult. Approach this organizational structure with great care. Financial systems and a quality CFO are critical. Mzinga ran into trouble when financial reporting wasn't timely and accurate.  You can't steer a business with bad data.  Further more, cleaning up financial systems creates a huge distraction. The ultimate lessons "buyer beware" and "change is really hard" are somewhat obvious. In our conversation Rick dives deeper into these and looks at the nuances and signs of trouble. From early childhood you've always heard the saying “Learn from your mistakes.” In the venture capital industry you frequently hear “Fail fast” to learn and get to the right idea.  Great advice. So, for this venture capital podcast I interview venture capital backed entrepreneurs about what they learned when their start-up didn't go as planned. I hope you can learn from their valuable experience. The post Herding Cats: Rick Faulk on Merging Start-ups appeared first on Venture Capital Coroner's Report.
