KEY TAKEAWAYS The challenges of lockdown forced many creatives to think even more creatively. This led to the C-O-N-T-A-C-T experience, which provides audiences with a safe way to enjoy fresh dramatic live theatre. Theatre has existed in many forms, and has even utilised many of the techniques on show, but this is the first time that so many techniques have been brought together. A production like this is not without its challenges. Aside from technical concerns, the involvement of the audience in such an intimate way has led to a greater sense of immersion. Social distancing is not a natural state for human society to exist in. The play brings this message home in a unique time in our history, which has made the message more meaningful. Cinema Eclectica | Movies From All Walks Of Life

Cinema Eclectica is a little different this week - and it's not just because we're risking another bad review from Covid-19 by going back into the cinema. It's because we've arranged the show backwards to accomodate our Film of the Week, Tenet - so those of you who want to go in completely cold can enjoy the rest of the show before we start discussing it in the second half. For the rest of you, Andrew, Rob and Graham are here to review Christopher Nolan's Saviour of the Theatrical Experience™ plus a new physical release from Mubi, Kantemir Balegov's Cannes hit Beanpole. There's also a Question of the Week about comedians you think deserve a better shot at big screen glory, and a lot of references to Ghostbusters for some reason. We're still not entirely sure why. If you like the podcast, send some support by visiting our PATREON (http://www%2Cpatreon.com/thegeekshow) . Alternatively, give us a 5-star rating and/or review wherever you get your podcasts from, it helps other people find our podcast. The more feedback we have, the more people can enjoy our movie chatter. www.thegeekshow.co.uk (http://www.thegeekshow.co.uk/) #cinemaeclectica #moviereviews #tenet #beanpole #mubi #kantemirbalegov #worldwarii #johndavidwashington #christophernolan #sciencefiction #robertpattinson #elizabethdebicki #kennethbranagh #aarontaylorjohnson #michaelcaine #dimplekapadia

Welcome to Geeks in a Pod. Each week we will discuss and debate a topic as it pertains to movies, television and all things pop culture. On this week's episode, we discuss the two big news story lines affecting the theatrical experience. The first being the earth shatter new VOD deal between AMC and Universal to allow Universal's movies to head to VOD after 3 weekends in theaters. The second big news being Disney's decision to release their tent pole title of Mulan on Disney+ at a premium price. Is VOD the new normal for movies? Are we going to spend the money for those premium Universal releases? Are we going to watch Mulan on Disney+? These and many more questions will be answered on this week's episode. Jules (8 years old) and Colby (10 years old) join me for a discussion of the South Korean company, CJ CGV, and their recent contribution to the Theatrical Experience - the 4DX theater.  These seats not only move, they provide water, rain, mist, scents, air, snow, lightning, fog and (for some reason) bubbles.  On this episode we take turns picking which film we would want to see that would utilize these features.

The Theatrical Experience is always evolving and the start of a new year is a great time to take a step back and look at the big picture.  On this episode I take a look at the continued trend of installing reclining seats, assigned seating, dynamic ticket pricing, the ever growing Chinese box office, new trends in "experiential cinema", the continued appeal of 70mm projection, next generation laser projectors and the introduction of a projector-less screen.

Front and center in the world of theatrical distribution is the Netflix issue.  It felt like a topic that needed addressed right away since this distribution platform is robbing film fanatics of the Theatrical Experience.  On this episode we discuss the need for a theatrical release so that a film can officially enter the public consciousnes.  Without a theatrical release, great films like Tramps (dir. Adam Leon), Deirdra & Laney Rob a Train (dir. Sydney Freeland) and Win it All (dir. Joe Swanberg) are almost entirely missing from the "Best of 2017" conversations - even though they are available to millions of Netflix customers.
