“I wonder where a guy, an everyday Joe like myself, can find a little action..." We have a super sized episode of the podcast, and watched "Beetlejuice" (1988) and the newly released sequel "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" (2024). This might be one of our favorite Tim Burton films, let alone comedies, like ever. We first talk about the original 1988 movie, which we know like the back of our gay hands - and can quote from beginning to end. The story of a newly dead Conneticut couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) who seek the help of a dead beat demon (Michael Keaton) to scare a yuppie New York couple, was a fresh take on a "haunted house" movie, and were here to say it's characters and lines are engrained in our everyday lives. We talk about the found family storyline of the Maitlands finding their surrogate daughter in Lydia Deetz (iconic goth girly Winona Ryder), 1988's Alec Bladwin's face card that could never get declined (not to mention that thick ass), and Michael Keaton absolutely crushing every line delverly as the "Ghost with the Most." We dive into our thoughts on the sequel and let's put it this way - for a movie that doesn't need to exist, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is a lot of fun. This episode may be a long one, but with two movies, 36 years and a ton of iconic performances, whats an extra hour? This week, Rolando, Nicole, and Eddie take a deep dive into the lasting legacy of Tim Burton's distinctive filmography, focusing on Beetlejuice. We explore why Burton's gothic, eccentric style has resonated so strongly with audiences—particularly millennials. What is it about his unique blend of whimsy and darkness that keeps his work so beloved, even decades later? Next, we focus on Beetlejuice itself and uncover an interesting revelation: despite Michael Keaton's unforgettable portrayal, the title character doesn't appear until more than halfway through the film. Instead, the true narrative centers around the Maitlands, portrayed by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, and their attempt to navigate the afterlife. We also take a moment to appreciate the stellar performances of Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O'Hara as Delia, who bring a remarkable energy to the film. Finally, we discuss the long-awaited sequel, which began production in 2023 after years in green lit limbo. Was this return to the world of Beetlejuice worth the wait? We also examine the absence of Jeffrey Jones and whether Tim Burton still has the box office power he once commanded. As newly pregnant Belinda faces the uncomfortable reality of her mother-in-law moving in, her world quickly spirals out of control. Can she protect her unborn child from the sinister intentions lurking within her home? Next, we revisit a cult classic with Beetlejuice (1988), directed by Tim Burton. Starring Michael Keaton as the chaotic and mischievous Beetlejuice, alongside Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, and Winona Ryder, we explore the Maitlands' haunting troubles, the Deetz family's unconventional arrival, and the mayhem that ensues when Beetlejuice is called upon to "help." Finally, we discuss the highly anticipated sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). Tim Burton returns to the director's chair, with Michael Keaton reprising his iconic role. He's joined by Winona Ryder and Monica Bellucci in this continuation, where three generations of the Deetz family find themselves once again ensnared by Beetlejuice's antics. In Winter River, Connecticut, married couple Barbara and Adam Maitland decide to spend their vacation decorating their idyllic country home. As they are driving home from a trip to town, Barbara swerves to avoid a dog, and the car crashes through the side of a covered bridge and plunges into the river. After returning home, she and Adam notice they now lack reflections. When Adam attempts to leave the house, he ends up in a strange and otherworldly desert-like landscape populated by enormous "sandworms." The encounter lasts only a few seconds for him, but after Barbara rescues him, she says he was gone for two hours. They then find a Handbook for the Recently Deceased, which leads them to realize they drowned in the river and have become ghosts. The house is sold, and the new owners, the Deetz family, arrive from New York City. Charles Deetz is a former real estate developer; his second wife, Delia, is a sculptor and conceptual artist; and his teenage goth daughter, Lydia, from his first marriage, is an aspiring photographer. Under the guidance of interior designer Otho, the family transforms the house into a new-wave work of postmodern art. Consulting the Handbook, the Maitlands travel to an otherworldly waiting room populated by other distressed souls, where they discover the afterlife is structured according to a complex bureaucracy involving vouchers and caseworkers. The Maitlands' caseworker, Juno, tells them they must remain in the house for the next 125 years on pain of a dire fate. If they want the Deetzes out of the house, it is up to the Maitlands to scare them away. Adam and Barbara are invisible to Charles and Delia, but Lydia is able to see them; she attributes her paranormal intuition to her "strange and unusual" nature. Against Juno's advice, the Maitlands contact the miscreant Betelgeuse, Juno's former assistant and a now-freelance "bio-exorcist", to scare the Deetzes away. Betelgeuse quickly offends the Maitlands with his crude and morbid demeanour. They reconsider hiring him, but they are too late to stop him from wreaking havoc on the Deetzes. The small town's charm and the supernatural events inspire Charles to pitch his boss, Maxie Dean, on transforming the town into a tourist hot spot, but Maxie wants evidence of the ghosts. Using the Handbook for the Recently Deceased, Otho conducts what he thinks is a séance and summons Adam and Barbara, using their wedding clothes, but they begin to age and decay, as Otho unwittingly performed an exorcism instead. Horrified, Lydia summons Betelgeuse for help, but he will only help her if she marries him; marrying a human would enable Betelgeuse to freely cause chaos in the mortal world. Betelgeuse saves the Maitlands, disposes of Maxie and Maxie's wife in a high striker game, and of Otho by changing his clothes to a leisure suit outfit, then prepares a wedding before a ghastly minister. The Maitlands intervene before the ceremony is completed, and Barbara rides a sandworm through the house, which devours Betelgeuse. The Deetzes and Maitlands agree to live in harmony within the house. Barbara and Adam form a stronger bond with Lydia, and she persuades them to occasionally unleash their ghostly powers, including spirit possession. Betelgeuse is stuck in the afterlife waiting room. He steals a number ticket from a witch doctor, who shrinks his head in return.

Otherworldly office ambience — we are back at the Movies this week for ambience inspired by the original Beetlejuice. The paranormal office the Maitlands enter after waiting months in the Neitherworld waiting room (see it here). Skeletons typing, paper rustling, a gongy drone, a PA directing souls, et al. BTW based on the upcoming sequel's title, I assume the Beetlejuice franchise will wind up being a trilogy. I haven't seen the sequel, but you don't get anything from saying "Beetlejuice" twice. And that the movie is not Beetlejuice 2 tells me we will get a Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. Oh no!

Episode 94 Brianna Maitland 17 year old Brianna Maitland vanished without a trace on Friday night March 19, 2004 after she left her shift at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery, Vermont. Her co-workers watched her drive off in her Green 1985 Oldsmobile at around 11:20PM. They had asked her to hang out and share a meal, but she was tired and had to work her second job early the next morning. In the hours after Brianna laft work, her car was spotted by multiple witnesses backed into the wall of a barn house about a mile from the Black Lantern Inn. One of the witnesses was a young man who had dated Brianna. He claimed that he found her car abandoned against the barn home with its doors open and headlights on, but there was no sign of Brianna, so he turned off her lights and shut the doors before leaving. Another witness, a police officer, discovered the car and when he saw Brianna's uncashed paychecks inside from the Black Lantern Inn, he headed there to try and figure out what was going on, but by the time he arrived, they were closed. Rather than report the incident, he left for a long weekend get away, setting into motion a set of cicumstances that caused a delay in anyone even realizing Brianna was missing. Hours after the police officer had come upon the scene, a group of travelers spotted the odd scene of the car backed into the barn. It was so odd, they stopped to take photos and investigate the scene. A broken necklace and some of Brianna's belongings were found inside and outside of the car. The car was towed, and 2 days would pass before anyone realized Brianna was missing. Officially, Brianna was never seen again, although there were reported sightings of her in other states thought to be cases of mistaken identity. Brianna's parents, Bruce and Kellie Maitland, were left to wonder what happened to their daughter. Along the way, they had to hear all kinds of rumors about Brianna, and what may have happened to her and who may be responsible. Brianna's case was thought by some to possibly be linked to the disapperance of Maura Murray, another high profile missing persons case in New England. Maura vanished from New Hampshire a month before Brianna, and as in Brianna's case, her car and odd clues were left behind. The Maitlands found a friend, advocate, and ally in Private Investigator Greg Overacker who has worked doggedly on Brianna's case for years. In this episode, he discusses the case, and tried to sort out fact from fiction. He also discusses the book he wrote on Brianna's case. When Brianna Maitland vanished, she was described as White, with Brown haid and Hazel eyes. She stood about 5ft5 and weight around 116 pounds. If you have any information about Brianna's case, call the FBI tip line at 800-CALLFBI or call the Vermont State Police at 844-84-VTIPS. You can also reach out to Bruce Maitland's organization; Private Investigations for the Missing. It's pop culture classic time everyone!! We're going back to 1988 to talk about our next topic, which is one year after I was born!! Somehow Doyle doesn't have the best and nicest things to say about this movie, but this movie is definitely well loved by the masses!! We're talking about Beetlejuice!! "After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose "help" quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia." It's baffling to me, as through my life I'm not sure that I've ever met anybody who doesn't like Beetlejuice, and then Doyle walked into my life! It's hard not to like this Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder film, and if you've made it this far in your life without watching it, you DEFINITELY need to stop and go find it! Tony, Crystal, and Johanna get together to talk about the Tim Burton comedy classic, Beetljuice! in this movie review/podcast they will talk about all the things that make Beetlejuice hysterical! Like the creative way it depicts the afterworld, the hilarious ghost gags throughout the film, and the non stop humor from Michael Keaton. After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose "help" quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.Edited by Jessica Hickson.
Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) love the little home in the country they've built for themselves, but after they are killed in a freak accident and come back as ghosts, they are appalled to find that their house has been sold to a tasteless and unpleasant family, who plan one tearing down all they've built to redo the house in the tackiest way possible. Now they are determined to do what they can to scare away the family and serve out their 125-year term as apparitions before moving on to the next phase, but a wrench stops up the works when the new owners are pleased with the financial possibilities of the attraction of a haunted house, and it seems the more they scare these new inhabitants, the more amused they get. The Maitlands call on the services of Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), a crazy and psychotic ghoul who seems to do more harm than good for the Maitland's tastes. Tim Burton directs.

When the Deetzes move to a new house in the country they suddenly find themselves harassed by the Maitlands, the former owners, who object to the way they decorate. Refusing to communicate with the Deetzes directly the Maitlands befriend their daughter Lydia and ultimately manipulate her in to calling in a “contractor” to forcibly remove her parents from the home. In 1988, riding high from the success of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Tim Burton released Beetlejuice, starring Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Gena Davis and Winona Ryder. While the movie focuses on demons and dead people, Burton decided to take the original script in a more comedic direction, as the first cut was far darker. Thankfully, the change paid off. Winning an academy award for Best Makeup, Beetlejuice made $73 Mil on a budget of $15 Mil and was a critical and commercial success. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin and Brent revisit the Maitlands see if they can come to grips with death and safely remove the Deetz family, or if Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice….Oh Shit.
Welcome to the afterlife of arbitrary rules and DMV lines: Beetlejuice!BREAKING NEWS: JASON HATES PETER JACKSON AND ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. He also doesn't know the difference between Australia and New Zealand or Julia Roberts and Geena Davis (who was in Thelma and Louise, The Fly, and Earth Girls are Easy, just to name 3). You can make fun of him on Twitter at @northfoggy. Get him, Internet! It turns out, there's no crying in baseball or in death, because the Maitlands take their horrific end in total stride. That being said, we co-hosts learned some very important lessons from this super child-unfriendly movie. A couple of those lessons are as follows:If you're provided a detailed guide book about the ins and outs of life after death, read it.NEVER go into business with an independent contractor who kisses your dead wife.Don't treat the ghosts who haunt your house like your trained Schnauzer dog.If you want your kids to be straight edge and get good grades, raise them right with ghosts and Calypso music.Tony Cox was the preacher at Beetlejuice's wedding (mind=BLOWN).What can we say? Beetlejuice contained a surprising amount of life lessons. A lesson you listeners should learn from us is, if you're watching the movies along with us, we don't break for our own tangents. Get on our level.Furthermore, Jason and I may not agree on who played the best Batman, but we know for a fact that Bird Person is better than Birdman. At this point, we realize that you're probably getting sick of us, but stay tuned anyway, because Jason and I will be selling tickets to the Michio Kaku vs. Neil Degrasse Tyson throw down. We are currently taking bets at DarthJader@HindsightisHorrifying.com (If that is the correct email. At this point we might just be screwing with you).If you want to hear an episode about the great Rover Dangerfield, just tweet us incessantly or drop us a line. Darth will make it so. Lastly, Johnny, if you're listening, @Darth_Jader‘s knowledge of and love for you is vast; she'll defend you to the Depp. And she'll see herself out. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success.
