Stephanie converses with the ever-engaging Bob Goff today. Known for his ability to intertwine whimsy with profound spiritual truths, Bob challenges us to take active, heartfelt actions instead of merely understanding faith on an intellectual level. Bob's message is simple: live an actionable, authentic faith filled with whimsy and boundless love. His new book "Catching Whimsy" encapsulates this dynamic approach, prompting us to explore faith with fresh eyes and a vibrant spirit. Quiet, modest acts of service hold immense power, says Bob. In a world often driven by recognition, he reminds us that God appreciates small beginnings and gradual growth. This applies to everything - our faith, relationships, and professional commitments. His emphasis on gentleness and patience serves as a reminder that impactful change often starts with unassuming, everyday actions. "Catching Whimsy," the title of Goff's new book, suggests that whimsy surpasses mere superficial happiness. It is a strategic, intentional approach towards life and faith that echoes childlike simplicity and wonder. Bob illustrates whimsy using metaphors like catching bubbles, tying it back to a pure form of faith that urges us to perceive the world uniquely. Bob Goff advocates for the practice of transitioning from "Bible study" to "Bible doing," urging us to embody our faith through deliberate actions. Central to his message are calls for service to others, such as feeding the hungry and welcoming strangers. Sharing experiences from teaching at San Quentin penitentiary, Bob also reflects on the deep humility demonstrated by the inmates—a quality that influences his own faith journey. His stories underscore the value of surrounding oneself with individuals who truly embody empathy and authentic faith. This principle extends to difficult situations where empathetic communication is key. Bob emphasizes the importance of steering clear from clichéd responses, replacing them with deeper, meaningful connections. Bob reframes suffering by mentioning the teachings of Paul and James, highlighting that through adversity, endurance and character are built, eventually leading to hope. This perspective encourages a focus on personal growth rather than dwelling in arguments or seeking validation. Authenticity is paramount in our relationship with God. He encourages believers to present their true selves, inclusive of doubts and questions. This authenticity is also about running our own race and allowing others to do the same, all while fostering genuine conversations with God - simple, everyday conversations flavored with the "salt" of prayer. For those inspired by his words, the challenge is set—embrace whimsy, embark on a journey of authentic living, and become the "convincing proof" of a lively, active faith. The conversation with Tom Owen is wide ranging, but one main theme we talk about is coffee travel and tourism. How the host and guest dynamics play out including the unintentional burden we may be placing on coffee producers when we visit them. Its an interesting time to be reflecting on the role of travel in coffee, since I just had a major trip to teach coffee fermentation. You'll hear Tom bring this up when he asks me about FTC being a form of advanced tourism. Sweet Maria's is an incredible resource for curious coffee nerds who want to learn about home roasting basics, green coffee quality, roast profiles and cupping. The website has an extensive coffee library and resource page, so I highly recommend you check it out if these topics interest you. I went deep into roasting coffee at home in Season 2 so feel free to go back and listen to those episodes on the "how" of home roasting. But for today, I want to focus on the "Why" question, specifically the "Financial Why" of home roasting. The vibrant media landscape in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where kiosks overflow with magazines and colorful film posters line roadside walls, creates a sexually charged public sphere that has a long history of political protests. The 2014 “Kiss of Love” campaign garnered national attention, sparking controversy as images of activists kissing in public and dragged into police vans flooded the media. In Unruly Figures: Queerness, Sex Work, and the Politics of Sexuality in Kerala (University of Washington Press, 2019), Navaneetha Mokkil tracks the cultural practices through which sexual figures—particularly the sex worker and the lesbian—are produced in the public imagination. Her analysis includes representations of the prostitute figure in popular media, trajectories of queerness in Malayalam films, public discourse on lesbian sexuality, the autobiographical project of sex worker and activist Nalini Jameela, and the memorialization of murdered transgender activist Sweet Maria, showing how various marginalized figures stage their own fractured journeys of resistance in the post-1990s context of globalization. By bringing a substantial body of Malayalam-language literature and media texts on gender, sexuality, and social justice into conversation with current debates around sexuality studies and transnational feminism in Asian and Anglo-American academia, Mokkil reorients the debates on sexuality in India by considering the fraught trajectories of identity and rights. Shraddha Chatterjee is a doctoral candidate at York University, Toronto, and author of Queer Politics in India: Towards Sexual Subaltern Subjects (Routledge, 2018).

The El Toledo Coffee Farm has quite the background and I'm excited to bring Brian on to share its story with you. I have a really interesting conversation with Motley Fool writer and the man behind the Medium article, The Bitter Truth About Starbucks Coffee - Brian Stoffel for you this week! Brian lives quite a unique lifestyle. In the winter, he and his family are down in Costa Rica living at the El Toledo Coffee Farm but they spend their summers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they help sell the farm's coffee beans. Please leave us a review at http://reviewourpodcast.com Get on the waiting list for the Sky Fit Challenge Join our Open Sky Fitness Podcast Facebook Group! Do the 7 Day Paleo Reset As you tune into our conversation, we also discuss: Starbucks and other big coffee brand's biggest secret when it comes to roasting their beans. Brian's own experience with intermittent fasting and shorter, intense workouts to lose weight and stay healthy. The story of how he and his wife stumbled upon the El Toledo Coffee Farm in Costa Rica and its incredible story. How most coffee farms in Costa Rica roast and prepare their coffee beans. Why the terms "organic" and "fair trade" can really impact the coffee economy. The fact that coffee brands have to pay thousands of dollars to be certified "organic" and thus only 1% of Costa Rican farms have that certification because they cannot afford it. How the El Toledo Coffee Farm family diversified their farm to provide for their own family with crops and livestock. The lifestyle and priorities of people Costa Rica versus that of the United States of America and what we can learn from that. Hope you enjoyed this interview! "They always leave when it gets hot in the cafe." —Man counter-protesting protestors About: Since the turn of the millennium, the percentage of U.S.-based specialty coffee drinking folk, like those who have a cup everyday, has quadrupled. Travel to any major or minor city in the country, and you’ll see an offering of coffees that transcends the uniform Starbucks experience that’s on every block. But the image that reflects after you place a mirror in front of any craft coffee company or cafe is a bit more clear, albeit unsettling. Stare at it long enough and you’ll come across matters like gentrification, the rise of the millennial-inspired yuppie wave and the old act of global economics, power dynamics and capitalism all at play. This podcast episode explores the intricacies of coffee and attempts to answer two simple questions about one very complex drink. What makes specialty coffee special and who is it really for? It’s Episode 61 and we’re switching things up! This week, Steve joins us for what might turn into a new feature—an update on his trip to Bolivia, recorded in the field. Inspired by Thompson Owen’s Sweet Maria’s coffee podcast and Steve’s own weekly In My Mug video cast, this week’s episode part history primer, part love letter, and part plea to keep Bolivian coffee alive—a must-listen for any coffee professional who aspires to go to origin. No. 61 ends with a (not so) quick interjection from Jenn with updates on Tamper Tantrum’s barrage of autumn events: New York City (September 25), Roaster Guild of Europe Camp afternoon lectures (October 6-8), and Cup North’s Manchester Coffee Festival (November 5-6). Have a listen and let us know if you’re a fan of the monologue! www.nuovasimonelli.it/en/
