Dave and Bethlie are BACK! In today's episode Dave and Bethlie tackle a very important question from a listener about how to train a 3 year old with a big imagination to not lie. Later on in the episode Dave and Bethlie begin their series on raising a child with special needs. Thanks for joining us and enjoy this episode! Question from a listener Would you be able to share tips on how to train a 3 year old who has a beautiful imagination on lying. We do a lot of pretend/imagination play, but I want him to also understand that lying (if asked a specific question) is not good. This is something that just recently came up, and I wasn't sure how to handle it or train him on it. You have to know the difference in imagination and lying. Lying lips are an abomination to God; but they that deal in truth are his delight You shall not bear false witness (you shall not be dishonest in any situation) Truth shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment Using ones imagination is fun and normal and creative; lying is refusing to face facts and/or take responsibility in a specific situation. Imagination is not wrong; lying is very wrong. Imagination is fun; lying is dangerous You have to use different words. Let's pretend Let's imagine Always tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth That is a LIE and That is VERY BAD Say that softly and sadly Connect those emotions with the act of lying In imagination In reality You have to teach Jacob and his family He lied to his dad His father in law lied to him His sons lied to him The Boy Who Cried Wolf (14:40) Raising A Child With Special Needs Part 1 Defining special needs. Special needs refer to children who require additional support or services due to physical, developmental, intellectual, or emotional challenges. These needs can range from mild to severe and may affect various aspects of a child's life, including: communication, mobility, learning, behavior, and social interaction. Some children have physical challenges Blindness, deafness, etc. Some children have mental or emotional challenges Various degrees of autism Fetal alcohol syndrome Some children are diagnosed with behavioral issues ADHD Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These symptoms can cause significant problems in functioning at home, school, or work. ADD Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is the older, more colloquial term for a specific type of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) called "Predominantly Inattentive Type”. ODD Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a behavioral disorder characterized by persistent negativity, defiance, and anger, often in children and adolescents. It's not a personality trait but a diagnosable condition that can impact a child's ability to learn, interact with others, and function in various settings. OCD Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by obsessions (unwanted, persistent thoughts, images, or urges) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental acts) that individuals feel driven to perform to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsessions. Insist on happy compliance If your child is not happy when you correct them, discipline is needed If your child will not comply when you speak to them, discipline is needed If you cannot take them to an event because they won't behave, discipline is needed If this is an exception, then you are on the right path If this is the norm, then you are not 5. Speak softly, directly, specifically, and only once When you have to reason with a toddler, you are teaching them to comply only if they want to do so If you practice replacement parenting, they will not learn to have self-denial and self-control

Suggestions for Training Toddlers (Part 1) Prepare for the long haul, but get started. This is a beginning and it will take adulthood before you are officially done It is always easier to correct a child while they are younger Correct every selfish and willful act Do it every time - even if it is awkward and difficult In a church auditorium In a store Refuse the temptation to let it go Never assume a child will be better when they are older They won't unless they are taught and corrected Discipline predictably Use simple phrases Calmly and matter of factly follow through with consistency Interrupt everything for training
In this episode I have a conversation with my friend, Dr. Rebekah Diamond. She is a pediatrician and the author of two books: Eat, Sleep, Tantrum, Repeat and Parent Like a Pediatrician. Dr. Diamond bridges the worlds of being a pediatrician with being a parent. She adds a lot of great parental insight into many aspects of parenting from the rigid research to the wild west of the internet. Here's what we talk about with Dr. Diamond: Why the toddler phase is so challenging for so many parents on a daily basis in relation to the advice being given.Parenting advice can be helpful but you can take the pieces that feel good for your own parenting and leave the rest. Parental efficacy, or parental confidence, will directly translate to positive parenting for your child. Different parenting styles and how parents can create their own parenting philosophy to tune into what you and your child need. The reasons why toddlers have tantrums and how to navigate these emotional episodes using different strategies.Setting realistic and developmentally appropriate boundaries and consequences for toddlers. Balancing rewards and external motivators to help toddlers learn about life skills. The importance of a consistent bedtime routine with toddlers and how to implement it in your home.Viewing parenting issues from the stance from whether or not there is an actual problem and determining if you need to take action. Why separation anxiety is developmentally normal in kids and how parents can work through their emotions related to it. Welcome back to the kitchen table. In gospel-centered conversations during correction, Bethany reminds us that the goal is to seek clarity—both for ourselves and our children. Rather than diving into a lecture, we should start by simply asking, “What happened? Why are you here with me?” This approach helps ensure that we see all parts of the situation, just as God does. Instead of focusing on what we already know, we encourage our children to make their own connections by asking thoughtful questions. When we connect with our kids and avoid accusing them, their hearts stay open. Rushing to judgment or assuming facts can quickly shut them down, but by asking good questions and truly listening, we gain clarity and understanding. Our role is to guide, not accuse, and in doing so, we reflect God's patience and wisdom. In this week's episode, we dive into why your child really doesn't want to go to school/daycare. The truth is, it's separation anxiety! Yes, they want to be with us it's natural. It is normal and so we should not be fighting our kids to "just deal with it" but instead be there to understand that it is a transition phase and all we can do is support them and their feelings. This might mean other things are put to the side while you make your priority connecting with your little one! We wish your littles a happy year

Did you know that 3 children a day die in the U.S. from drowning? In this week's episode, we wanted to spread some information about water safety in hopes to help parents be more aware of how easily accidents can happen around water. Hey there, welcome back to another episode of the Family Brand Podcast! Mellisa here, and this week is a bit different and I'm super excited to share it with you. So, I spent last weekend hanging out with some of my college roommates and amidst the reminiscing, we stumbled onto a topic we've all tackled: raising toddlers. Our guests today are Mary Anne, Marlee, Kristal, Brittney, and Karla! By the end of this episode you are going to love them as much as I do. First, I have to shout out to my friend Shelby, from the "From Another Mother" podcast. She was the one who originally suggested that we take on this toddler-talk. Thanks, Shelby, this episode's for you! Now, let's face it, handling toddlers is a wild ride! It's fun, tiring, and challenging all rolled into one. Who better to chew over this with than my amazing squad who've all braved the toddler years too? It was an absolute blast! We didn't have any scripts or fancy child psychology degrees. Nope, it was just us moms, sharing our stories and advice from our own toddler-raising adventures. That's what makes this chat so special. There's a mix of tips and experiences, some of which might hit home for you, others maybe not so much. That's cool, though. The last thing we want is for anyone to listen to this and feel overwhelmed. We put this episode together as a treasure trove of support, encouragement, and tips, from our homes to yours. We hope it leaves you feeling inspired, reminding you that you're exactly the parent your toddler needs. We all have different stories. One of us lived overseas while her hubby served in the military, others juggled being full-time moms and career women. At the end of the day, I hope this episode leaves you feeling not just inspired, but also reassured that you're doing a great job. Yes, parenting can be tough. But remember what Mary Anne said, "give yourself some grace". Keep loving yourself, and always remember, you're exactly the mom your toddler needs. Hit play to hear the full conversations! Welcome back to the kitchen table. Dealing with toddler tantrums is inevitably a season of motherhood that we all walk through. While there are a lot of strategies, methods, and advice out there, in today's episode, Bethany comforts this aspect of motherhood with a Gospel perspective built on the six principles in which God offers his strength. Interacting with your child during tantrums and fits while maintaining a gospel perspective requires intentionality and grace. In these moments, we are often triggered and sparked with anger and frustration, but we remember God's posture and the compassion he offers in these moments. Parenting from a gospel perspective requires us to approach tantrums and challenging moments with love, compassion, and a commitment to restoration. Bethany offers practical ways to handle these moments with your littles and verbiage to consistently point them to God's love and their need for a savior. As we navigate the ups and downs of parenting, let us strive to reflect on our Heavenly Father's love, extending grace and understanding to our children even during their most challenging moments. Toddlers soak up instruction so we tried to input as much age appropriate instruction into our kids as we could. But it took preparation and homework to understand what age is appropriate for instruction. And our kids did fine.
Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
It is not our job to change our child. It is their job to change us ~ Maggie Radzik Oh boy, do we have a treat for you! In this podcast we have a fascinating conversation with catechist and Montessori trainer Maggie Radzik. Maggie is a leader in Catholic Montessori in the US and she is committed to seeing the work of Maria Montessori applied in a truly Catholic context. What is so genius about Dr. Montessori's philosophy is that she drew her conclusions not from her own theories, but through first observing the children. She approached the child with humility, knowing that God designed them in a certain way, and that the adults around the children need to not impose their own will and ideas on the children but instead provide an environment for that child to grow and develop into the person God made them to be. Parents can learn much from this no matter how old their children are! This humble approach to the child can be applied to toddlers, teenagers, and all in between. As the girls get a little pickier and more opinionated about what they are eating and Auggie remains Auggie, Morgen and Trisha are starting to focus on the language they are using around food, such as "are you full?" instead of "finish your dinner!". The veggie struggle is real in Morgen's house, and she is learning to focus on the benefits of rainbow foods, while Trisha has a fun rainbow food-spiration that may get Charlie to try a few new things. In this episode, Trisha was on a roll with creative ideas that Morgen can't wait to try out. Teaching healthy eating is not always easy (and the ladies are guilty of sneaking treats in the front seat while driving and asking the girls how the apple is tasting in the backseat). How can we as parents incorporate veggies without the kids knowing or presenting it in a way that makes it appealing? Morgen and Trisha offer some recipes they're going to try and ways to make eating fun for the kiddos! As always, Mom Jeans and Minivans would love to hear your advice on food!!! This week's episode is inspired by a POTUS unwilling or unable to accept the facts. Indeed, you can probably currently find him prone on the floor of the Oval Office, pounding his feet and fists, screaming, "I won't go! I won't! I won't go, and you can't make me!!"If you've ever parented a 2- or 3-year-old, you know exactly what's happening. It's a temper tantrum, and they are the bane of every parent's experience. Full-body sweats, tears, pleading, and begging are the hallmark signs of a temper tantrum—and that's just the parental response! The pre-schooler, however, is awash in unrequited desires: staying up longer, buying a toy at the store or being picked up and carried 24/7. Then there are the crazier things that make kids crack: imagined slights, wanting the impossible, or preventing a sibling from existing in the world as we know it. This week we jump into the temper tantrum mire and find out how to stop the little demons from hurting themselves or our sanity. As far as Donald J. Trump is concerned, however, we're out of ideas. Maybe a nice, long time out is in order.LinksThe President Show on YouTube: Donny Goes to School (temper tantrum at 4:04!)Parenting Power Up on YouTube: What To Do When Your Child Throws a Temper TantrumFollow us on social media!Instagram @ishouldnthavehadkidsFacebook ishouldnthavehadkidsTwitter @SHHKidsOr, email us :)ishouldnthavehadkids@gmail.comFind all episodes of I Shouldn't Have Had Kids wherever you get your podcastsBuzzsproutApple PodcastsSpotify

In this episode (021), I talk with Michelle Stern, who is a dog trainer with a background of being both an educator and a mom. She blends her interests in an incredible way - to teach parents how to create safety and get rid of the chaos that naturally exists when raising both dogs and young children. We talk about strategies and putting systems in place to ensure that both the dogs and the children are safe and happy. There are so many valuable tips and suggestions offered in this episode. You just need to listen to it! Also, Michelle offers an online class in which she teaches and supports parents who are raising both dogs and young children. As I state at the end of the podcast, I believe that her class is a MUST for all parents who have dogs and young children co-existing. What she teaches would have saved the life of my uncle’s daughter. I can’t stress enough just how valuable and important Michelle’s expertise is and how taking her course will definitely reduce the chaos and improve safety, but it may be priceless for some in preventing devastating injuries or worse. Two thumbs up for Michelle Stern!

In some cases, it’s even been called child abuse. In this episode, Dale and Veronica share the wisdom that’s been given to them about training young children. What made Amee perk up and get serious about changing herself was reading the scientific information and research that was showing emotions ARE based in science and biology. That they aren’t accidental. They aren’t the luck of the draw. And that we are governed every day by auto pilot functions in our brain while primitive still completely necessary. And that the auto pilot settings were established by not only the quantity of experiences but also the QUALITY of these experiences we had in childhood! But the urgency was in seeing that the understanding of brain architecture and the influence of our experiences on the development of our emotions, mental wellness, mental illness was only recent. As in – while Amee was growing up and even starting her own family, what scientists know today was JUST becoming understood.Grasping this one thing – the fact that the science is THERE but the fact that its not well known or has reached a saturation in our society yet is EXACTLY why Amee started to podcast and become an advocate for understanding how our negative, traumatic, adverse, neglectful, sometimes abusive and scary childhood experiences we all have had in one form or another – is why we, as adults – have the health and well-being issues we have today.AND if we don’t change or become aware of what these experiences are and what impacts they have on our brains, we will keep passing down from one generation to the next through the mis-guided parenting of our own kids. "Advances in brain and behavioral research have fueled a new sense of urgency about learning and school-readiness in children. Breakthroughs in brain science show how the cultural environment alters children’s brain development. Discoveries in behavioral science document the fact that early learning sets the foundation for success in school and in life."This episode features Amelia Bachleda, Ph.D.Outreach and Education Specialist Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences (I-LABS)In this role, Dr. Bachleda translates and delivers accessible information about the latest research in early learning and brain development to members of the early learning community, including parents, child care providers, educators and policymakers. Since joining I-LABS in 2015, Dr. Bachleda has given dozens of public talks and workshops about the neuroscience of childhood and brain development.Prior to her work at I-LABS, Dr. Bachleda earned a B.S. in Neurobiology at the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in neurobiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her graduate work focused on brain and sensory development. She has also developed content and curriculum materials for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC.Key Topics Discussed In This EpisodeWhat is different about the study of the brain development today versus 30, 20 or even 10 years ago? What are the distinct phases of brain development in humans? Do boys & girls have different brains? Are there people who are more “sensitive” than others? Meaning there are those who may render their environment differently than someone sitting next to them seeing & experiencing the exact same thing? Is the genetic? In psychology, there is Attachment Theory which states that a strong emotional and physical attachment to at least one primary caregiver is critical to personal development. Is there anything in neuroscience that supports this? I have heard from many of my guests that are psychologists that we are “wired” to connect when we are children. What does that actually mean? How do neuroscientists define “trauma” and “traumatic experiences”? Is different than psychologists? Explain neuroplasticity References & Links

When your toddler has behaved in a socially unacceptable way (tantrum, kicking, biting etc) it is vitally important that you separate the deed / behaviour from the do-er / your toddler. In other words, it's the behaviour that is questionable, not them. Doing this will allow you to remain compassionate, empathetic and kind while trying to work out what the need was beneath the behaviour. This is what they need from you, especially in the heat of the moment. Tune In...
