In this powerful episode to start off 2025, I sit down with my friend, Anna LeBaron, author of The Polygamist's Daughter, to hear her extraordinary story of escaping the grip of a violent, polygamous cult and finding healing through faith, courage, and community. Anna shares her personal journey of growing up in a household led by her father, Ervil LeBaron, a self-proclaimed prophet responsible for unspeakable acts of violence. She opens up about the trauma of being raised in a toxic environment, her eventual escape at age 13, and the long process of deconstructing harmful beliefs while reconstructing her identity in Christ. Key topics we discuss: • The realities of life inside a polygamous cult and its impact on identity and mental health. • Anna's harrowing escape and the challenges of rebuilding her life after leaving everything behind. • Deconstructing toxic theology and learning to separate God's truth from man-made distortion. • How she found healing through therapy, community, and faith. • Encouragement for those facing trauma, abuse, or the process of reconstructing their own beliefs. Anna's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of God's grace to bring beauty from ashes. If you or someone you know is navigating trauma, spiritual abuse, or the challenges of deconstruction, this episode offers hope, healing, and practical wisdom. This episode is sponsored by Better Help. Anna Lebaron is one of more than fifty children born to infamous polygamist cult leader Ervil LeBaron, aka “Mormon Manson.” So you can probably imagine that her upbringing was both extraordinary and devastating: As she recounts in her excellent book, The Polygamist's Daughter, she lost multiple family members at the hands of other family members, including those she lost in the infamous “4 o'clock murders” — a bit of blood atonement that led to four people being killed. Those murders are depicted in the 2024 Hulu documentary “Daughters of the Cult.” This week, we hear from Anna and her sister, Celia, about their stories — and their capacity to believe in rehabilitation and redemption. You might think that Anna would hold a lot of resentment against her father. (We sure would!) But that's not the case. Anna and Celia speak with compassion about their father — and of her brothers and half-brothers who committed murders at their father's bidding. Anna LeBaron joins Lola & Meagan to talk about the trauma of living in a polygamist cult and the murders perpetrated by her father, Ervil LeBaron aka the "Mormon Manson." She also tells the girls about her healing journey, going to therapy, and the importance of telling your story.

**Content warning: While Second Shot is at its heart a show designed for the whole family, this episode involves open discussion of violence and childhood trauma. It may not be suitable for younger listeners.** “I didn’t know I was in a cult…” From the age of 13, Anna LeBaron was out on her own, running away from her family. Actually, running away might not be the right way to describe it - escaping is more appropriate. She grew up inside the Church of the First Born of the Lamb of God, a violent polygamist cult led by her father, Ervil LeBaron. She and her more than 50 siblings were constantly moved around the country from Texas to Colorado and even into Mexico, as the family tried to slip away from law enforcement. Dozens of murders were carried out around Anna, including against her own family members. Few have experienced the types of things that Anna has, but her story of trauma and recovery can serve as a lesson to all of us that there’s always time to re-write your story. Today on the #PirateBroadcast Russ Johns invites Anna LeBaron. Anna works with publishers to promote new books that come on the market. Her passion is putting the right book in the right pair of hands. Anna feels like not every book is for everyone. Anna started writing her first book about her family in 2014, and the book was published in 2017. Her book is about what her family had to go threw growing up and finding out that her dad was one of the nefarious Fundamentalists in the country and known for many deaths including one of his own brothers. Anna left her cocoon and emerged into a beautiful butterfly when she left that life behind.
My family and I met Anna LeBaron last year at a book launch for best-selling author Kindra Hall and her book “Stories That Stick.” We had a terrific conversation with Anna. That led to a dinner a few months later after I read her Memoir: The Polygamist's Daughter. We will talk a great deal about her story growing up.Anna quit her 17-year career launching cargo aircraft for the automotive industry to launch books full time for the publishing industry. Anna knows how to help launch books. She began book launching five years ago. Since then she has launched over 70 books, including 8 New York Times Best Sellers which include:“Of Mess and Moxie” by Jen Hatmaker"Girl Wash Your Face"by Rachel Hollis"Girl Stop Apologizing" by Rachel Hollis"Everybody Always" by Bob Goff"Grateful Americans" by Gary Sinise"The Sound of Gravel" by Ruth Wariner"Get out of your own way" by Dave HollisIn her spare time she is a public speaker. She shares her inspirational story of escaping a cult, healing, and creating a life that she’s proud of. Anna speaks at writer’s conferences and retreats about book launching and other topics. Anna coach’s others on harnessing the power of social media and building an authentic platform so they can reach those they are called to serve.
Anna is the author of The Polygamist's Daughter and my personal book launching guru. She has an amazing life story and also an incredible grasp on who God is and how he works in our daily lives. I was so honored to have her join me. I know you'll enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

Anna Lebaron shares her story of becoming someone who lives a Big Life. Anna is One of more than fifty children of infamous, polygamist cult leader, Ervil LeBaron, Anna LeBaron endured abandonment, horrific living conditions, child labor, and sexual grooming. At age thirteen, she escaped the violent cult, gave her life to Christ, and sought healing. A gifted communicator and personal growth activist, she's passionate about helping others walk in freedom. Anna lives in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and loves being Mom to five grown children and Yaya to a brand new granddaughter. I invited Anna to be a gust on Dialed IN! for 800 different reasons! I believe that anyone who carries around hurt and pain (which is basically all of us) can relate to her story. Not only did she overcome a horrific start in life but she has this amazing ability to harvest the good. Anna has a great sense of humor, she seeks out the joy in life, she goes out of her way to be kind and encouraging to others. She is a successful author and sought after speaker. Anna also helps others market effectively with social media, launches books and has a program to help writers share their stories. She also does cross-fit which makes her a total badass! Our conversation went several direction and I know you will learn so much from Anna! Here are some key take-away's I had: 1. Healing is possible - even with extreme trauma 2. Healing takes courage...but on the other side, is FREEDOM 3. The coping skills we use to hide and operate with the pain we carry also provide us with the strength we need to heal. 4. The only way to overcome is to go through. Unpack your backpack of pain/hurt. 5. Take the first step: Tell someone who is safe and has earned the right to hear your story or begin by writing your story out. Anna says that it's important to get the story outside of you so you can look at it differently. >>Anna wants to know what impacted you from this podcast. Hallie talks with author Anna LeBaron about her incredible story of escaping from a violent polygamist cult at the age of 13.
Anna LeBaron is an incredible woman. She grew up the daughter of polygamous cult leader, Ervil LeBaron. She has dozens of siblings and lived through heartbreaking trauma and abuse as a child. Even after escaping the cult at the age of 13, Anna went through even more horrific circumstances no child should ever have to experience. In today’s podcast episode, Anna recounts some of the stories from her past, drawing on her book, “The Polygamist’s Daughter.” I read the book cover to cover — and it was riveting and well-written. I was honored Anna took the time to speak with me today. She is a warm and friendly soul — and quite the book worm like myself. Anna says: Your parents are going to do the best job they can. My mom did the best job she could with what she had. Forgiving and letting go of some of those grievances is so important…that frees you. I met Anna last year when she led my book launch team. In fact, she is a professional book launcher these days, having led teams for Jen Hatmaker, Bob Goff and most recently, the best selling “Girl, Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis. Pretty impressive stuff! I love following her on social media, where she exhibits positive vibes and plenty of social media marketing wisdom. Oh yeah — and she loves CrossFit! — and of course we talked about that in this episode as well. Anna proves the resilience of the human spirit and the power of redemption through faith in Christ. She’s now a Christian who has worked through the issues of her origin family, and she has shown that there is life after even the worst of trauma. What We Talked About: • The Polygamist’s Daughter by Anna LeBaron • The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner • Other Books: For the Love, Girl Wash Your Face, Love Does, Own Your Everyday, Grateful American •
At the age of 9, little Anna Lebaron had 49 siblings. But even after growing up in a violent polygamist cult constantly on the run from the law, her life today is a true testament to the possibility of finding hope, healing and true identity after childhood trauma and neglect. In today's podcast (and her book "The Polygamist's Daughter"), Anna holds out hope for every person who feels too broken to ever be whole again. Some of the topics we touched on were: -Life in a polygamist cult -How poverty and polygamy affected her walk with God -Effect of fatherlessness -Pursuing healing and freedom -Finding true comfort -Turning to food for comfort/losing weight -Self care to combat PTSD -Why this memoir matters -Every person's potential for healing -The length of the healing process -What does freedom actually mean? -Being who we are destined to become -When God's spirit is near -"You're right here." -Experiencing the fathering heart after fatherlessness -How to hear God speak -Message on Anna's heart -You can hear God -You can heal -Doing our part -Who we should interview next -The power of telling your own story and transitioning it from the inside to the outside -Taking the next right step Follow along with Anna's journey at her website or social media sites at @annaklebaron Resources mentioned in today's episode: "The Polygamist's Daughter: A Memoir" by Anna LeBaron Bob Hamp Foundations of Freedom by Bob Hamp "Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovered our Hidden Life in God" by Dallas Willard
This week Anne chats with Anna LeBaron, author of the memoir The Polygamist’s Daughter, about how literacy kept her going through a difficult childhood, and how as an adult she turned being an author’s biggest fan into a full-time career. You’ll hear how nonfiction put her dearest fractured relationships back together again, her tips for being a “patron of the arts” on a budget, and the redemptive nature of memoir-writing. This week, we get to hear from the incredibly wise Anna Lebaron. Anna is an entrepreneur and the Author of “The Polygamist’s Daughter.” She has been featured on BBC News; The Dr. Oz Show; Christianity Today; and dozens of podcasts. While you may have heard Anna talk about The polygamist cult that she was born into and her miraculous exit, but we are going to be talking about some pieces of her story you might not be as familiar with. But, in the end, this interview takes a very purposeful turn toward surrogate parenting, highlighting the ways that God provided other people and opportunities for Anna to get the things that she never could have received from her family of origin. Join me as I talk to Anna LeBaron, author of The Polygamist's Daughter. Anna is one of 50 siblings that grew up in a polygamist cult led by her father, Ervil LeBaron: known as the 'Mormon Manson.' Her father ordered the murders of multiple people, and unbeknownst to young Anna, had her family constantly running from the law. Anna lived in multiple places, often having to leave in the middle of the night, grabbing what little she could, just to survive. For years, Anna and her siblings had to scrounge for food and clothes; all the while being told that she was God's chosen family. At age 13, something inside broke, and Anna decided to leave. Before her mother could usher in yet another move, Anna put on her Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, and escaped her father's cult. For years, Anna lived in fear; but God took hold of Anna's life and transformed her from the inside out. God had a plan for Anna, just like he has a plan for each of us. Anna's story is amazing and it has the fingerprints of God all over it. Even though we may not have lived the life Anna has, we can most certainly relate to childhood wounds, insecurity, and fears that inhibit our lives. Today Anna talks about how she was able to leave her past, drop her insecurity, and become the woman God planned all along. I believe today's conversation will encourage all of us to stop and notice how God is at work in our lives today. You can find Anna's book on Amazon or anywhere books are sold. It is a riveting story that you most certainly don't want to miss! You can find Anna by going to her website or following her on social media. All the links are listed below. I am excited to share Anna LeBaron’s story with you today. If you haven’t heard of her, she is a survivor of a Polygamist cult. Her father was a notorious polygamist and murderer. She grew up unlike most of us. Most of us have never been on the run from the FBI. Filled with murder, fear, and betrayal, Anna’s story is shocking. It’s a story of a fatherless girl and her unwavering search for love, faith, and a place to call home. Anna expresses the power of vulnerability and shares her story of surviving a Polygamist cult. She shares how she found Jesus and how she was able to take off the shame of being her earthly father’s daughter and embrace the unconditional, ever secure love of her heavenly Father. What did you enjoy about this episode? What was your takeaway. Let's continue the conversation on Instagram or Twitter or you can send me an email here. Thank you for following along life with me. I love being apart of your day. And as always, I hope this show helps you survive a little easier.
In this episode of The Couragecast, I had the privilege of having a conversation with Anna LeBaron. The story you are about to hear is real and raw. It is the true life story of a woman who embodies the definition of courage. I was honoured to be able to chat with Anna LeBaron about the healing that has taken place in her life, and the freedom she has experienced in sharing her story. Anna is one of fifty children fathered by Ervil LeBaron, who spent years hiding from the FBI until he was eventually captured and sentenced to life in prison for murder. From his prison cell, he continued to control his thirteen sister wives, his children, and many of his followers who carried out murder on his behalf. Abandoned as a child, Anna was forced to live in the most horrific conditions, endured years of child labour, and was sexually groomed to become a sister wife. At the age of thirteen, she made the most courageous decision of her life and escaped from the violence of the cult. Now fatherless and motherless, she sought refuge with her sisters family. But her story does not end there. She experienced the trauma of multiple murders within her family and was devastated by severe loss. In my conversation with Anna, was honest and transparent about the healing journey that she has been on for the past twenty years. This is truly the story of redemption and belonging. In this Voice Studio episode we talk about the fact that Anna LeBaron and Ruth Wariner each eventually trusted their intuition or inner voice that said it was time to escape their violent polygamist cult. The question is, how can we call that out in others instead of just rescuing them and creating a new dependence? Their inner voice matters. In the fall of 2015, Anna LeBaron (author THE POLYGAMIST'S DAUGHTER) sent a Tweet via Twitter to a new author she wanted to support. Unbeknownst to her, the author, Ruth Wariner, was her cousin. She is the daughter of Joel LeBaron, who was killed by his brother Ervil LeBaron's followers in 1972. Anna LeBaron accidentally broke a decades' old silence between their families with a simple Tweet. But after a tenuous introduction through social media, the cousins bridged the gap between their families and Anna offered to help Ruth promote her book, New York Times Bestseller, THE SOUND OF GRAVEL. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Anna LeBaron about her book The Polygamist's Daughter: A Memoir (Tyndale House Publishers, 2017). Here's the ground we cover in this conversation: Let's begin with the book's cover. It features a picture of you with a black censor bar covering your eyes and your mouth. What did you think the first time you saw that cover and how does it effectively communicate what readers are going to encounter in the book? (00:43 - 03:53) Help us to understand the structure of your family of origin. How many wives did your dad have and how many siblings did you have? (03:54 - 05:52) Give us a look behind the scenes. What was it like spending your early years inside a polygamist cult? (05:53 - 12:35) You left the cult at age 13. Talk to us about the circumstances leading up your escape. (12:36 - 18:16) What did it look like for you to adjust from having many boundaries to actually having a level of freedom? (18:17 - 22:14) Talk to us about the role counseling played in helping you to peel back the layers and move forward? (22:15 - 27:20) What do you hope every single reader takes away from your story? (27:21 - 32:56) Every book writing experience is a life-changing journey. How did working on The Polygamist's Daughter impact you? (32:57 - 36:05) What was it like to transition from speaking your story to finally putting it down in writing? (36:07 - 40:34) What was it like to read the manuscript to your mom? (40:35 - 45:07) Tell us the story of how you stumbled into your work as a book launcher. (45:08 - 51:55) Anna, if the listeners want to connect with you and find out more about The Polygamist's Daughter, where should they go on the web? (51:56 - 52:30) About the Book: My father had thirteen wives and more than fifty children . . . This is the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. Ervil's criminal activity kept Anna and her siblings constantly on the run from the FBI. Often starving, the children lived in a perpetual state of fear―and despite their numbers, Anna always felt alone. Would she ever find a place she truly belonged? Would she ever be anything other than the polygamist's daughter? Filled with murder, fear, and betrayal, The Polygamist's Daughter is the harrowing, heart-wrenching story of a fatherless girl and her unwavering search for love, faith, and a place to call home. About the Author: One of more than fifty children of infamous, polygamist cult leader, Ervil LeBaron, Anna LeBaron endured abandonment, horrific living conditions, child labor, and sexual grooming. At age thirteen, she escaped the violent cult, gave her life to Christ, and sought healing. A gifted communicator and personal growth activist, she's passionate about helping others walk in freedom. Anna lives in the DFW Metroplex and loves being Mom to five grown children. Anna LeBaron escaped from a polygamist cult when she was 13. Her new book, The Polygamist's Daughter details what it was like to grow up in such an abusive and traumatic environment. Anna was child 40-something of 50 to polygamist cult leader Ervil LeBaron. She grew up in an incredibly unstable environment and felt safe almost nowhere. She was abused physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally and was being groomed to continue in the polygamist practice from a very young age. After she escaped, she saw grace in her sister and brother-in-law who protected her and provided a safe place for her to begin to heal. She attended a small Christian school that helped her ease into life outside of the cult. She is thankful for her five children, the siblings who have continued to support her, and all of the things that lined up for her book to become a reality. Pursuing healing, wholeness, and freedom has required a tremendous amount of courage. As Anna says, "healing is a process. Healing is a miracle." Healing from abuse and trauma is a life-long journey and Anna encourages victims of all kinds of abuse and trauma to ask for help and to seek counseling.
