Martin Goldsmith, former host of the public radio classical music program, Performance Today, joins us to talk about the powerful story of how his parents met and their experiences performing with an all-Jewish orchestra in Nazi Germany. In 2001, he published a book about their experiences titled, The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany. The book has since been made into a film by Danish filmmaker Anders Ostergaard titled, “Winter Journey,” which stars Goldsmith and has been selected as the centerpiece of this year's New York Jewish Film Festival, which runs virtually through January 26.

So truths to this: 2009 I had a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery which caused me to have emergency surgery to correct an adhesion. This surgery caused peritonitis which landed me in the ICU for over a week while I recovered. The next year and half I saw my weight melt away, but I kept challenging myself to eat more, meanwhile I wasn’t active. Unfortunately without the commitment I have today I slowly gained all the weight back. I was miserable! Unhappy in my own skin, I found myself self implosive and divorced a couple of years later. I started my fitness transformation at a 33% body fat percentage where currently I maintain 18%. Our Guest Kirsteen Kim (PhD, University of Birmingham) is a professor of theology and world Christianity at Fuller Theological Seminary. Previously, she taught at Leeds Trinity University (2011–2017), Selly Oak Colleges (2001–2006), and the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide (1998–2001). A leader of Christian Unions (InterVarsity Christian Fellowships) at school and university, Dr. Kim began her career as a theological educator in South Korea, where she taught English Bible study and cross-cultural skills. Between 1993 and 1997 she lectured in missiology at Union Biblical Seminary, in Pune, India, as a missionary of the Presbyterian Church of Korea. Along with her academic standing and intercultural experience, Kim brings learning from ecumenical encounters. She is a member of the Lausanne Theology Working Group and was previously vice moderator of the World Council of Churches Commission on World Mission and Evangelism, chairing the drafting group of the mission statement Together Towards Life. She was research coordinator for the Edinburgh 2010 project, drafted its Common Call, and edited the Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series that emerged from it. At her previous institution, which had a Catholic foundation, she organized a conference and published an edited work on the “New Evangelization” promoted by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI and Pope Francis's exhortation Evangelii Gaudium: The Joy of the Gospel. In addition to academic forums such as the American Society of Missiology, Societas Oecumenica, and the Tyndale Doctrine Group, Kim has addressed a wide range of mission and church bodies. Kim does theology from the context of world Christianity and for missional purposes. On May 13, 1939 the MS St. Louis sailed from Hamburg, Germany, loaded with Jewish refugees eager to escape Nazi Germany. However, denied entry to the United States, the ship's passengers were returned to Europe, where many were captured and sent to concentration camps. Alexander Goldschmidt and his son, Helmut, spent the next three years in six different camps before they were murdered in Auschwitz. As we approach the 75th anniversary of the St. Louis' disastrous voyage (May 13) as well as Holocaust Remembrance Day (sunset on April 27th to sunset on April 28th), Alex's Wakesheds light on part of the Holocaust that is missing from many textbooks.
