In most parts of the world and especially where Christianity is flourishing, Pentecostal and charismatic movements predominate. What would it look like for the Western world—beset by the narrative of decline—to participate in this global Spirit-driven movement? (Eerdmans) Dr. Néstor Medina and Rev. Dr. Amos Yong discuss his most recent book, Renewing the Church by the Spirit: Theological Education after Pentecost (Eerdmans, 2020), the second volume of the groundbreaking Theological Education between the Times book series. "I come from a Pentecostal background, and much of my scholarly work has been devoted to exploring a variety of theological themes and topics from my Pentecostal perspective or Pentecostal church, [an] ecclesial set of perspectives,” says Rev. Dr. Yong. "In that respect, this book is part and parcel of that journey as a Pentecostal Christian, as one who's participated in Pentecostal charismatic communities, attempting to think theologically from out of those communities.” This episode of OP Talks is part of the Theological Education between the Times (TEBT) series, an initiative out of HTI member school Emory University Candler School of Theology that "gathers diverse groups of people for critical, theological conversations about the meanings and purposes of theological education. The project begins with a recognition that theological education is between the times, on the way. And it works in the confidence that we do not walk this road alone."

Welcome to episode twenty-one of New Creation Conversations. In this conversation I'm joined by Dr. Amos Yong. Amos is Professor of Theology and Mission as well as the Dean of the School of Theology and Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. Amos received his undergraduate degree from Bethany College, has Masters degrees from Western Evangelical Seminary and Portland State University, and a PhD from Boston University.Amos is a prolific writer. He has written or edited more than 50 books and 225 scholarly articles. His work in particular on the Holy Spirit has been foundational for contemporary Pentecostal theology, but he has also written extensively on inter-religious dialogue, political theology, and a theology of disability.I got to know Amos 25 years ago when I was at SNU and was invited to come and respond – from my Holiness perspective – on papers being presented at the Society for Pentecostal Studies. If you search his name on Amazon, you will find dozens of his books there. All of his books on the Holy Spirit are incredible. His Theology and Down Syndrome was very formative in my own ministry. The Amos Young Reader surveys his work. And he has a new commentary on Revelation in the Belief series that will be released this fall. I'm really grateful for Amos' hospitality and friendship, and am especially glad that two theological cousins like the Pentecostal and Holiness traditions can (and are) finding places of common mission and connection in these days. I'm really honored to bring you this New Creation Conversation with Dr. Amos Yong.

On episode twenty-five, I'm talking with Dr. Louise Gosbell, an Australian biblical scholar who specializes in the subject of disabilities. Dr. Gosbell has written numerous articles and projects on how churches can engage with (and include) people with disabilities. We discussed the following: What is a disability? Why does this matter for the Church? What Biblical texts are primarily formative in developing a theology of disability? How do we engage other scholarship on the subject? What about the subject of healing? What does it look like for churches to become more inclusive? About Louise: Dr. Louise Gosbell is the Dean of Students and Lecturer in New Testament at Mary Andrews College in Sydney, Australia. Louise's PhD, which looked at disability in the gospels, was completed at Macquarie University in 2015 and was published in 2017. Louise has a keen interest in the issue of disability and has been involved in various aspects of ministry and academic writing in this area for over 20 years. She has also been in the role of Sydney co-ordinator for CBM's Luke 14 program training churches in disability inclusion for 10 years. Louise has recently completed writing a disability handbook for the Sydney Diocese of the Anglican church which will be launch in April this year which aims to help churches to become more inclusive of people with disabilities and their families. Louise is married to Mark who is a Principal at a special school and they have 3 teenage daughters. Louise is an avid reader in any form – ebooks, audiobooks and real books! Louise is also a slightly fanatical U2 fan and has seen them in concert 24 times. “The divine wind rustles, hovers, and swoops ‘over the face of the waters’, touches the created orders and catches the world up in the divine witness”I sat down with Amos Yong to discuss his new book , Mission after Pentecost: The Witness of the Spirit from Genesis to Revelation. We talk about what underpins his prolific and widespread writings, what is gained from approaching theology with pneumatology in the foreground, his approach to mission as an opening up to others, his commentary on the Gerasene demoniac and what it means for the church to participation in the mission of the Spirit – when that mission is one of deliverance both cosmic and socio-political, and much more.Amos Yong is Dean of the School of Theology and the School of Intercultural Studies and Professor of Theology and Mission at Fuller Theological Seminary. Some of his books include, Spirit of Love: A Trinitarian Theology of Grace, The Bible, Disability and the Church, In the Days of Caesar: Pentecostalism and Political Theology, Hospitality and the Other, Theology and Down Syndrome, Discerning the Spirit(s): A Pentecostal-Charismatic Contribution to Christian Theology of Religions, and Renewing Christian Theology: Systematics for a Global Christianity, with Jonathan A. Anderson. He has also authored 200 (and counting) scholarly articles in a wide range of peer-reviewed journals, edited book collections, and other venues. Anointed for Music Ministry in African American Churches, with Birgitta Johnson, on Music and the Church Ep. 21

For the last few weeks, we’ve been talking about musical virtuosity. This week’s guest is Dr. Birgitta Johnson, Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina, and the President of the Southeast and Caribbean Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology. In this episode, Birgitta discusses being anointed for music ministry. In the African American churches that she’s studied as an ethnomusicologist, musical skill is important but not the be-all-end-all. Musicians should also be called to ministry. Here's the heart of what Birgitta is seeing between virtuosity and being anointed for music ministry: "You have some people who don't know anything about Jesus and who can play really, really well. If you give them enough tracks, or enough recordings, or enough guides—they can play it just like the most anointed musician on the pew. And so, when you start talking about how we identify what is anointing, often I've seen, it really comes down to the larger relationships that happen in music ministry." Musicians often spend the most time together of any group in the church. And people leading music ministry often spend more face-time with lay people than other ministers can. So, Birgitta says, the relationships that a minister of music has with other musicians in the church "reveal where the person's heart is for ministry." Can anyone hear God’s voice? What about those who don’t know him? Can non-Christians or those who’ve never been to church hear him speak? And what about those from other religions? On this episode, we’re privileged to have the esteemed Dr Amos Yong on the show to talk about some of these questions. Amos is an eminent theologian, a prolific author and researcher with over 20 titles based around the work of the Holy Spirit. They include a theology of disability, interfaith relationships, global theology - even a theology of Down syndrome. The title on this topic is called: Beyond the Impasse: Toward a Pneumatological Theology of Religions. Amos shares his story of knowing God, and how his most common way of hearing God’s voice is through the Scriptures. We talk about the different ways people use "God-talking" language. His Mum for example, regularly says God speaks to her, but his Dad is more conservative in his use of this language and a lot less likely to attribute his experiences to God. We discuss how the Spirit is working in the lives of those from other faiths, how God is present in the lives of our neighbours and what God may be saying when we learn to love someone else. The secret is out. Find out what professional theologians really think about being theologians. In this episode we: quest for answers to the biggest questions in life; create a just world by being an activist-intellectual; free people from internal, not just external, restraints; help our beliefs make a difference in the world; put the words 'Pentecostal' and 'theologian' together; and bring back the prophetic church. Plus, you'll hear about what it's like to teach at Hogwarts. During Enfolding Theology, Josh Linton, from Philips Theological Seminary, asked Tom Oord, Keith Ward, Adam Clark, Cindy Rigby, Amos Yong, and Barbara Holmes: Why do you do what you do?  You know, why actually be a theologian? Why study and not just act? What is the return on investment for theological education? How will the shape of ministry change in the future? A big thanks to Philips Theological Seminary for sponsoring the podcast! Theological higher education continues to change. What it looks like and how it works constantly evolves but it's not going away. Phillips Seminary in Tulsa, OK has tuned into these changes and has responded with accessible, flexible, and creative programming. And it's why students from all over the nation enroll in their programs. And it's why so many HBC Deacons resonate with who they are and what they're about. I Adam Clark, Associate Professor of Theology at Xavier University, is committed to the idea that theological education in the twenty first century must function as a counter-story. One that equips students to read against the grain of the dominant culture and inspires them to live into the Ignatian dictum of going forth “to set the world on fire.” He currently serves as co-chair of Black Theology Group at the American Academy of Religion, actively publishes in the area of black theology and black religion and participates in social justice groups at Xavier and in the Cincinnati area.  Barbara Holmes is a writer and scholar, who publishes books about the intersection of ethics, spirituality, mysticism, cosmology and African American religious culture. She is the President of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, and the former Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Memphis Theological Seminary. She says, "I have been called to work in diverse settings, where the call to serve also invites the human spirit to engage in radical creativity." In addition to her work with law firms, she has worked with homeless missions, HIV/AIDS ministries, and international ministries in Kenya (the Presbyterian Church of East Africa) and Japan. Thomas Jay Oord is a theologian, philosopher, and scholar of multi-disciplinary studies. He is the author or editor of more than twenty books and professor in the American northwest. A gifted speaker, Oord is known for his contributions to research on love, open and relational theology, science and religion,  and theologies exploring the implications of freedom and relationships for transformation. See more here. Cindy Rigby joined the faculty of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1995. Dr. Rigby's special area of interest is setting Reformed theologies in conversation with theologies of liberation, particularly feminist theologies. An energetic scholar, Dr. Rigby is the author of more than thirty articles and book chapters and is also working on two additional projects, one focused on the doctrines of “sin and salvation” and the other on developing a systematic theology especially for pastors. Professor Rigby is the co-chair of the Christian Systematic Theology Section of the American Academy of Religion, where she has been an active member since 1993. Keith Ward - from his website: I have been an academic virtually all my working life, teaching philosophy, theology, and religious studies at various times. I am interested in intellectual problems, in arguments and theories, and I largely depend on other people for finding out facts. I am, by nature and conviction, an Idealist philosopher, somebody who believes in the supremacy of Spirit or Mind, and who thinks that the material universe is an expression or creation of a Supreme Mind. I am a Christian, and became a priest of the Church of England in 1972. I think the main task for religious believers today is to ensure that their beliefs are conducive to human flourishing and, so far as is possible, to the flourishing of all sentient beings; to relate ancient religious beliefs to the modern scientific world view; and to see their own faith in a truly global context. Amos Yong came to Fuller Seminary in July 2014 from Regent University School of Divinity, where he taught for nine years, serving most recently as J. Rodman Williams Professor of Theology and dean. Prior to that he was on the faculty at Bethel University in St. Paul, Bethany College of the Assemblies of God, and served as a pastor and worked in Social and Health Services in Vancouver, Washington. Yong's scholarship has been foundational in Pentecostal theology, interacting with both traditional theological traditions and contemporary contextual theologies—dealing with such themes as the theologies of Christian-Buddhist dialogue, of disability, of hospitality, and of the mission of God. You can sign up now to join us in person or LIVE STREAM it online. Amos Yong is the director of the Center for Missiological Research at Fuller Theological Seminary. Previously, he served as the dean of the School of Divinity at Regent University. For more on Dr. Yong check out Tom Oord's excellent post on his legendary status.
