Well, that was an election. We will go back through the races we drafted last week. As always, there are a couple nail-biters as we begin the tradition of waiting for updates every afternoon. But we can say that San Diego incumbents did well. Mayor Todd Gloria and the City Councilmembers hoping for another term did fine. So did Terra Lawson Remer, the county supervisor who faced down millions in spending against her. Turns out all she had to do was all we suspected she had to do: Connect her opponent Kevin Faulconer to Trump. But like everywhere else in the country, Trump did better here than before. Coming up on the show this week… The race between Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer and former mayor Kevin Faulconer is easily the hottest race this year. Millions are being spent on behalf of the candidate. The mailers are getting wild. We'll get into it. Speaking of mailers, we've got some good ones. A million dollars has already gone into the big county supervisors race from outside groups – most of it in support of mayor Kevin Faulconer, and if you're in the district, you can tell from your mailbox. Usually mail waits until ballots are out. That'll be our introduction into Politifest Week. We've been trying to run the show like normal while preparing for our big annual gathering. We're going to go through some of the sessions we're most excited to see. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Los Angeles' richest man, Patrick Soon-Shiong, sold the San Diego Union-Tribune and the LA Times to MediaNews Group, owned by Alden Global Capital. The U-T has had six owners since 2009. Soon-Shiong at the start of his tenure promised "stability." Now it seems there's anything but. This week on the show, we discuss how the news came trickling out at the start of the week — followed quickly by staff reduction notices and buyout offers for the waning paper. We also look at the wider picture: How did newspapers get to this point? And is there a route to stability for regional journalism? Plus: Former mayor Kevin Faulconer announced his bid for County Supervisor. The special election to replace former Supervisor Nathan Fletcher is almost here. And San Diego Unified's school board is oddly... unified. Support VOSD with a donation or subscription. The real story was the phone calls from across the street As Rivas reported, the victim's neighbors called 911 for nearly two hours — begging for help and relaying what they saw. Rivas discusses the details of that June night, the San Diego Police Department's response to the scrutiny, and what seems a systemic lack of police capacity and slow response times to critical calls. It's the stretch drive of the California recall campaign, with just one week left to cast your ballot. The top candidates are in an all-out media blitz now, crisscrossing California with a wide range of events. Today, Governor Newsom campaigned in San Francisco at a phone bank trying to turn out Latino voters. Larry Elder had two news conferences, blasting Newsom for the high cost of living and the increases in the gas tax on Newsom's watch. John Cox is on a bus tour through the Central Valley. Kevin Faulconer focused on crime, with a Zoom event with victims' advocate Marc Klaas. All of this, as financial reports, public opinion polls and the ballot return numbers suggest Governor Newsom has the upper hand, and seems increasingly likely to survive the recall. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Jeff Bell and Patti Reising were joined by KCBS Politcal Reporter Doug Sovern. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We are now less than a month away from only the second ever Recall election of a California Governor. We also have now had three-of-four GOP candidate debates while Governor Newsom has begun to expand his efforts to get out his base of support. The Legislature has returned to Sacramento and as politics heats up nationally this summer, the Recall election here in California continues to grow and grow in its impact on the state's political scene. So, as we move closer to September 14, what developments are we seeing with the Recall Election as the window narrows for the candidates? As California recall election ballots start arriving in voter mailboxes, three candidates vying to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom met in Sacramento on Tuesday night to debate. Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, businessman John Cox and state Assembly member Kevin Kiley debated at the historic Guild Theater in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood on Tuesday night. The event, hosted by the Sacramento Press Club, was recorded by CapRadio and can be listened to now (click “play” above). Moderators Vicki Gonzalez of CapRadio and Lara Korte and Sophia Bollag of The Sacramento Bee asked questions focusing on four different issues: the pandemic response, wildfires, housing and homelessness and the economy. Republican candidate Larry Elder declined the Press Club's invitation to participate. Republican candidate Caitlyn Jenner did not respond. And Governor Newsom also declined to participate. Former Congressmember Doug Ose agreed to join the debate, but suffered a heart attack on Sunday and has since ended his campaign for governor. Each candidate was allowed a minute-long opening and closing statement, plus 60 seconds to respond to moderator questions. If a candidate was directly mentioned or criticized during another candidate's answer, they possibly were allowed 30 seconds to respond at the moderator's discretion. HAVE YOU HEARD? Mayor Kevin Faulconer, has proclaimed September 21st, 2020 as “CITIZEN OF THE WORLD DAY” in the City of San Diego See the proclamation HERE. September 23, 2020 Robert Delaurentis -- who just flew his plane "Citizen of the World " from the South to the North Pole in a record-breaking expedition -- will talk about unleashing another kind of power - the power to go up! Up above the nations and colors that divide us into the power of world citizenship! "When another plane on my route mysteriously crashed, when a cyclone raged ahead, when my fuel tank spewed fuel into the cockpit, when I was about to touch down in the epicenter of the coronavirus -- I felt the fear arise, but each time I reminded myself of our mission of global peace and that all impossibly big dreams have risks to be considered and dealt with, and then I flew. Rather than running from challenges, when uncertainty and difficult times show up, we revisit our ideals and support each other through them. This is what we stand for. This is who we are. This is what we dream of for the world. We are all stronger together. As Citizens of the World for the World, we rededicate ourselves to our global community and our mission of One Planet, One People, One Plane: Oneness for Humanity.” poletopoleflight.com -- See the video at: PeoplePoweredPlanet.com -- Music by: „World Citizen“ Jahcoustix feat. January 2015. New San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer triumphantly declared in his first State of the City address that he would be assembling a group of civic leaders to “keep the Chargers in San Diego where they belong.” But the Chargers were no longer the only team eyeing a move to Los Angeles. The Rams and Raiders, former Angelenos themselves, were also mulling a move back. This episode chronicles the final two years of the San Diego Chargers. When the city was confronted with the errors of its past, the political and financial realities of its present, and the great unknown of its future, and the team was faced with its ultimate choice. Starting tomorrow night, most Californians will be living under a new stay-at-home order, an overnight curfew to try to stem the spread of the coronavirus, but many are bristling at the new public health order, vowing not to obey it, enforce it, and in some cases, promising to challenge the governor in court. Among those highly critical of Governor Newsom’s latest move to try to bring COVID-19 in check, is the Republican Mayor of San Diego, Kevin Faulconer. Mayor Faulconer joined KCBS Political Reporter Doug Sovern along with Anchors Jeff Bell and Patti Reising with more on his efforts to push back against the Governor.
