China plans to launch the Shenzhou XX mission on Thursday afternoon for a crew shift aboard the nation's Tiangong space station, as stated by a senior program official.据一位高级项目官员透露,中国计划于周四下午发射神舟二十号飞船,并在天宫空间站进行航天员轮换任务。Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the China Manned Space Agency, announced at a news conference on Wednesday morning at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China that the Shenzhou XX spacecraft, carrying three crew members—mission commander Senior Colonel Chen Dong, Colonel Chen Zhongrui and Colonel Wang Jie—is set to launch at 5:17 pm on Thursday using a Long March 2F carrier rocket. Thursday also marks China's 10th Space Day, observed annually on April 24.周四也是中国第十个航天日,每年的4月24日是中国航天日。Lin mentioned that the Long March 2F rocket will soon be loaded with propellants at its service tower.林西强提到,长征二号F火箭即将在其服务塔上进行推进剂的装载。"After the Shenzhou XX spacecraft reaches its designated orbital position, it will engage the rapid autonomous rendezvous-docking mode and take approximately six and a half hours to approach and dock with the front port on the Tianhe core module," Lin said.“神舟二十号飞船到达预定轨道位置后,将进入快速自主交会对接模式,大约需要六个半小时才能接近并交会对接天和核心舱的左舷。”林西强说道。The Shenzhou XX team will conduct China's 15th manned spaceflight and become the ninth group of residents aboard the Tiangong, which is currently the only operational space station independently operated by a single nation.神舟二十号团队将执行中国第十五次载人航天飞行,也将是进驻中国空间站“天宫”的第九批居民。天宫是目前唯一一个由单一国家独立运营的运营空间站。The Tiangong, completed in late 2022, orbits Earth at an altitude of about 400 kilometers. It consists of three permanent components—the Tianhe core module and two large science lab modules named Wentian and Mengtian—and is currently linked with two visiting spacecraft, the Shenzhou XIX crew ship and the Tianzhou 8 cargo ship. It stands as one of the largest and most intricate structures ever established in space by humanity. Chen Dong and his team will take over the expansive orbital outpost from their counterparts in the Shenzhou XIX mission—mission commander Senior Colonel Cai Xuzhe and crew members Lieutenant Colonel Song Lingdong and Lieutenant Colonel Wang Haoze—who arrived on Oct 30. By now, Cai's team has spent 175 days in orbit. The two groups will coexist for approximately four days for transition work, after which the Shenzhou XIX astronauts will depart and return to Earth on Tuesday, according to Lin.据林西强介绍,两个团队将共处约四天进行交接工作,之后神舟十九号宇航员将于周二离开并返回地球。During their six-month orbital stay, the Shenzhou XX crew will perform various tasks such as conducting scientific experiments and technological demonstrations, conducting spacewalks to install space debris shielding equipment, experimental instruments, and other external devices, retrieving devices from outside the space station, and engaging in science lectures and other public-benefit activities. This will mark the third space mission for Chen Dong, who participated in the Shenzhou XI mission in 2016 and Shenzhou XIV in 2022, where he served as the mission commander with Cai as a crew member. For Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie, this upcoming flight will be their first extraterrestrial expedition. rendezvous-docking/ˈrɒndɪvuː ˈdɒkɪŋ/n.交会对接orbital/ˈɔːbɪtl/adj.轨道的;与轨道有关的expedition/ˌekspəˈdɪʃn/n.探险;远征shielding/ˈʃiːldɪŋ/n.屏蔽;防护

Exactly one year ago, on this day, India's Chandrayaan-3 mission landed its Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover on the South pole of the moon. To commemorate this historic event, India declared that it would celebrate National Space Day every year, on Aug 23rd. When the lander and the rover touched down on the moon, India held the distinction of being the ONLY country ever to have achieved landing on the moon's south pole. This was a far cry from its early days when India's space scientists began work in a fishing hamlet with a bicycle and an old school for their factory. But one man's vision, one man's perseverance and one man's dedication is what started it all. His name was Vikram Sarabhai. Tracing India's space journey through history, we had earlier put out an 8-part podcast series. The Pale Blue Dot is one of the most famous photographs ever taken, though you may not recognize the subject at first glance. NASA's Voyager I spacecraft launched in 1977 and traveled the solar system, transmitting images back to scientists on Earth and forever changing our view of our celestial neighbors. In 1990, as it was passing Neptune, Voyager turned its camera back to Earth and took a photo. This picture, taken nearly 4 billion miles away, shows Earth as a pale blue dot. The planet doesn't look like much, but it does show just how small we are in the grand scheme of things. And it's breathtaking. On National Space Day, we celebrate the wonder of the universe and what they teach us about life on Earth. In the midst of the Civil War, an unlikely hero emerged. This person was not a soldier or even a politician. Clara Barton, a trained nurse, was working as a patent clerk, when she decided to leave her civilian post to serve in the conflict. She attended the sick and injured troops on both sides of the front line, bringing food and medical attention wherever it was needed most. This earned Clara Barton the unofficial distinction of being an Angel of the Battlefield. She went on to found the American Red Cross and is celebrated today in both the North and the South. On National Nurses Day we celebrate the hard work and dedication of the people on our front lines today.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. The SKTL Space Tokens will be airdropped free-of-charge to U.S. and Canadians on May 6th, Space Day, 2022. Why you should listen The SKTL ERC20 token project is a cryptocurrency token for space enthusiasts. SKTL tokens are designed to capitalize on the future of the space economy while at the same time providing funds to clean up space debris. Space debris is an ever-growing problem that has the potential to severely affect the space economy and the ease of access to outer space. Morgan Stanley predicts that the global space industry could surpass a total value of $1T by 2040. The designers of the SKTL token believe this estimate is conservative and expect the space economy to become a multi-trillion dollar economy within the next ten years and become perhaps the single largest economic revolution in history over the next decades. There is a cloud of more than 9,000 tons of space debris flying around in space at more than 10x the speed of a bullet that poses a huge risk to satellites, rockets, and anything else needed for the space economy. The SKTL cryptocurrency token is a smart contract that is intended to reward holders for humanity's progress in developing and exploring space while also providing a fund to help with ensuring that Space remains open to humanity.  This token provides a way for token holders to benefit from the incredible potential growth that the Space economy offers while also supporting the very necessary social good of space cleanup. Some Packages Define A Brand! Hint: Think Distinctive Bottles. Welcome to May 7th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate standing out in a crowd and things that are out of this world.  It's been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And while that may be true, it wasn't for Coca-Cola in the early 1900s. Its product was so popular that dozens of knockoff beverages had hit the market and were cutting into Coke's business. They decided the best way to combat this was to create a distinctive bottle. This new design not only made it stand out in a crowd, it quickly became so recognizable that people could look at it and immediately associate it with the brand. On National Packaging Design Day, take a moment to appreciate the thought that goes into the boxes and bottles we see everyday that put those products above the rest. Space, the final frontier… Few other days make me as excited as National Space Day, and apparently, I am not alone.  Lockheed Martin Corporation created this celebration as a one day event in 1997 and by 2001, former astronaut and Senator John Glenn expanded it to worldwide acclaim.  This was the year he established International Space Day and its popularity continues to skyrocket!  While we have only been able to physically reach the stars in the last 60 years, the cosmos has been inspiring mankind for as long as we have been looking up.  On National Space Day, celebrate this playground for the imagination and dare to boldly go where no one has gone before.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson.  Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.

In previous episodes, we talked about the importance of getting students involved in advocacy. You may recall our Episode 3 interview with Dale Ketchum of Space Florida, which promotes Space Day each year in Tallahassee. Then in episode 7, we spoke with Congressman Brian Mast of Florida's 18th district, whom our students met with regularly during AIAA CVD each year. Today, we meet with four students who have been active participants in aerospace advocacy to get their perspectives on how talking to legislators has opened up opportunities and created new perspectives. 8th graders Beau Kimler, Paul Kiseling, and Anthony and Andrew Zhang have been both junior advocates as well as leaders along the way. They share with us tips for advocating for a cause you are passionate about and how teamwork is important in getting the job done. Although this year's visits were virtual, the experience of impacting legislation is always positive. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup! Without further ado, the news update from the week of 19 - 25 April. 1) The 6th China Space Day took place in Nanjing on Saturday April 24Happy China Space Day everyone! This Saturday, China kicked off its 6th China Space Day, an annual celebration promoting China’s space heritage and future space programs. China Space Day is not actually one event, but actually hundreds of events all around the country, with many institutes, universities, and schools organizing space outreach events. This includes conferences, presentations, exhibitions, etc. It’s also worth noting that among all the space events taking place in China, there is one big official event where all the space industry creme-de-la-creme get together, and which last two days. Every year CSD takes place in a different city, and this year it took place in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province. Speeches were delivered by Zhang Kejian (director of the CNSA), Wu Zhenglong (governor or Jiangsu), Han Liming (Secretary of the Nanjing Communist Party). Finally, we saw an announcement of the name of China’s Mars rover, which is currently on-board the Tianwen-1 spacecraft in orbit around Mars, and which is supposed to land sometime in May. Among the ten names that were shortlisted by Chinese netizens, the name Zhurong (祝融) was officially announced by Wu Yanhua, the deputy director of CNSA. Zhurong is a god of fire in Chinese mythology.2) ChinaSat Made Some Big Statements about China’s Constellation PlansChinaSat President Ge Yujin made some very interesting comments at an annual shareholders meeting for the company, as reported by Satellite World (卫星界) on Monday. The most interesting line was a reply to a question about Hongyan, namely a reporter pointing out that Hongyan was originally planned for completion in 2020, and asking for a status update. Mr. Ge replied by pointing out that Hongyan was originally launched in 2018, and that it has since, along with CASIC’s Hongyun, come under national constellation system plan, with Hongyan understood to be undergoing major changes. 3) Spacety and Intane Optics complete China’s first private satellite-ground laser comms experimentTwo Chinese private companies, Spacety (a satellite manufacturer) and Intane Optics (optics subsystem manufacturer) announced in a press release on April 4th that they had achieved China’s first private laser satellite-ground comms. This satellite-ground laser comms experiment was done with the Beihangsat-1, a Spacety cubesat launched in November 2020 which was essentially a test satellite for space-based ADS-B, but it also carried the SG10-1 optical payload manufactured by Intane. The optical ground station was also provided by Intane, based in Nanjing.4) Tianbing Aerospace Announces an Intelligent Rocket Manufacturing Base in SuzhouTianbing Aerospace, aka Space Pioneer, held a signing ceremony this week for an “Intelligent Rocket Manufacturing Base” in Zhangjiagang, Suzhou. The manufacturing base includes a total investment of RMB 4B, and aims at a capacity of 30 liquid rockets and 300 engines per year, with an estimated completion date of 2022. A few other interesting nuggets of info from the article: Tianbing Aerospace plans to launch its first Tianlong-1 liquid carrier rocket by the end of 2021, which, according to the exhibition shown at the signing ceremony, would make Tianbing the first medium-sized liquid-fueled rocket in China. Tianbing also claims to have pre-sold 10 rockets so far, and plans to begin batch manufacturing its rockets by next year. The company plans to IPO before the end of 2023.---------------------------------------- Follow us on YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter (https://twitter.com/DongFangHour), as an audio podcast, and on our official website: https://www.dongfa

This week we’re doing something a little different and unplanned. On Friday, April 6 Western University in London, Ontario held its 4th annual Space Day. Western University is one of the leading planetary sciences universities in Canada, if not the best. The keynote speaker was former Canadian astronaut, Dr. Dave Williams. Williams first flew on two space shuttle missions, STS-90 in April of 1998 and then again on STS-118 in August 2007. He holds the Canadian cumulative long duration record for spacewalks. He is also the writer of several children books including, Go for Liftoff, To Burp or Not to Burp and this fall will have his first adult book published, Defying Limits: My Life as an Astronaut, Doctor, and Explorer. Williams is an excellent speaker and story teller. For that reason we decided to share his unedited speech in this weeks podcast. Enjoy.

This is Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. Here is the news.China plans to launch another lunar probe at the end of November. The mission will mark China&`&s first automated moon surface sampling and moon take-off, as well as China&`&s first unmanned docking in a lunar orbit around 400,000 kilometers from earth. It will also see China&`&s first return flight in a speed close to second cosmic velocity. With a weight of 8 tonnes, the lunar probe has four parts, namely, an orbiter, a returner, an ascender and a lander. The whole process goes like this. The lander collects moon samples and transfers them into the ascender. The ascender then takes off from the moon, in a journey to dock with the orbiter which is traveling around the moon with the returner. After loading the samples, the returner heads back to earth. It separates from the orbiter before landing on the earth. This is Special English. The number of births in China reached 17 million last year, the largest annual growth since 2000, thanks to the adoption of the second-child policy early last year.According to the top health authority, at least 45 percent of the newborns were not the only child in the family last year, compared to 30 percent in 2013. In some places, mostly large cities in eastern China, more than 50 percent of the newborns were a second child. The authority attributes the increase to the one-year-old universal second-child policy. A baby boom triggered by the new policy will continue in the next two years. It is expected that by 2020, the number of births will climb to 20 million each year. The health authority plans to add 140,000 more maternity health workers in the coming years.Top decision-makers intensified efforts in late 2013 to adjust the family control policies that were in place for three decades. The old policies allowed most couples to have just one child. The policy change aims to address major demographic challenges including an aging population and a looming labor shortage. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. A Chinese language exam is likely to be introduced in Russian schools from next year. According to a national-level education department in Russia, there is a plan to introduce the Chinese language test to the Basic State Exam next year and to the Unified State Exam in 2020.Russia&`&s Basic State Exam is a series of obligatory examinations for ninth grade students and the Unified State Exam for 11th grade students necessary to qualify for university education.Takers of the two exams currently have a choice of English, German, French and Spanish as part of the exam&`&s foreign language component. The Chinese language is taught in 120 educational institutions across Russia. The total number of student learners exceeds 17,000.This is Special English. China has released a short list of eight names for the country&`&s first Mars spacecraft, which is scheduled to launch by 2020.The eight names were the top ones chosen from over 14,500 entries by people worldwide. The names are mandarin phrases, with top scorers meaning "phoenix" and "Mars" in English.China plans to launch its first Mars spacecraft by 2020, which will orbit, land and explore the Red Planet.Selection work started in August last year. The eight finals were decided via online polls and a jury review. The final choice will be announced around Space Day, on April 24. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. The week-long Spring Festival holiday witnessed 400 million passenger trips in China, up 2 percent year on year.Between Jan. 27 and Feb. 2, the number of road trips totaled 330 million, a slight increase from last year. Train trips reached 52 million with an annual increase of 9 percent.A total of around 3 billion trips are expected to be made during this year&`&s Spring Festival travel rush between Jan. 13 and Feb. 21. The lunar New Year is seen as the biggest human migration on earth. The average distance traveled was 260 kilometers per person; and around 90 percent of the trips were within a range of 500 kilometers. Around 90 percent of the trips are made for family reunions. The Guangzhou South Railway Station was the most used transportation hub during the migration, followed by Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station. All the three spots are seated in major cities with significant populations of migrant workers. This is Special English.China has seen an increase of so-called empty-nest youth, or young people who live alone, which experts believe is a cause for public concern. The National Bureau of Statistics reveals that 13 percent of households were inhabited by one person in 2015. The figure in 2008 was 8 percent. The Xinhua News Agency reports that specifically, of this "empty-nest" population, young people are especially common. The term "empty-nest" used to refer to elderly people living alone after their children are grown up and out of the home.A report on "empty-nest youth" found that this group tends to feel lonelier than their peers, and their personal lives are largely kept within their rented apartments. As they typically live far from work to seek cheaper rent, these young people spend hours commuting, leaving them exhausted in the evenings.Even so, this population chooses to live in big cities, attracted by opportunities for a better career. Some 21 percent of the group have no savings or are slightly in debt.Experts say the emergence of empty-nest youth is a result of imbalanced social and economic development between big cities and smaller towns. It is also a natural result of China&`&s ongoing urbanization.Still, the experts warned that the growing size of this group could bring more problems, affecting the population&`&s psychology and marital aspirations. Some recommended that the youth get in engaged in community activities. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. Now the news continues.Super Bowl advertisers are treading carefully this year to avoid alienating customers as a divisive political climate takes some of the buzz away from what is usually the biggest spectacle on TV.Ad critic Barbara Lippert says that while "people need an escape", like the Super Bowl, this year&`&s matchup on the field feels "so much less important than what&`&s going on politically."To get the attention back, some advertisers are turning to nostalgia, celebrities and marketing stunts. P&G is sexing up Mr. Clean, Honda is featuring nine celebrities and Snickers is running a live ad.Others are touching on social issues, without being too blunt about it. Budweiser won the pre-game buzz with sweeping cinematic ad showcasing founder Adolphus Busch&`&s 1857 immigration from Germany to St. Louis. Although it has been in the works since May, the ad felt topical, as it was released online just days after President Donald Trump&`&s travel ban against people from seven Muslim-majority countries. The ad got more than 8 million views on YouTube in just four days. This is Special English.U.S. President Donald Trump says movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger "tried hard" to make "Celebrity Apprentice" a success, but has failed. In an early morning Twitter post recently, the president kept alive a theme he brought up a day earlier during his first appearance at the National Prayer Breakfast.Trump, who once hosted the NBC reality TV show, took a pot shot there at Schwarzenegger, the current host and former California governor, over a ratings nosedive for the show.Trump said in his tweet that Schwarzenegger did a bad job as Governor of California and even worse on the Apprentice, but at least he tried hard.Schwarzenegger responded quickly to the remarks in a video on his verified Twitter account, suggesting that he and Donald Trump switch jobs. His response to the dig from Trump came later in the day in the form of a tweeted link to a 2006 article from the Los Angeles Daily News reporting that he, then the governor, had released his tax records. Trump, as a candidate and now as president, has refused to release his own tax records.Schwarzenegger had no further comment beyond the linked article, but his representative said the article "speaks for itself".You&`&re listening to Special English. Nordstrom says it will stop selling Ivanka Trump clothing and accessories, creating some questions about the future of the brand elsewhere. The Seattle-based department store chain said the decision was based on the sales performance of the first daughter&`&s brand. Neiman Marcus may be the next one to pull back on the label, as the branded jewelry is nowhere to be seen on the upscale retailer&`&s website as of Friday.Nordstrom said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press that it makes buying decisions based on performance; and they have got thousands of brands, more than 2,000 offered on the site alone. Reviewing their merit and making edits is part of the regular rhythm of Nordstrom&`&s business. The move by Nordstrom comes amid a social media campaign called "Grab Your Wallet", urging a boycott of stores that stock Ivanka Trump or Donald Trump products.Ivanka Trump announced earlier this month that she would take a leave of absence from her clothing and accessories business as well as the Trump organization. This is Special English.Norwegian zoologists have found around 30 plastic bags and other plastic waste in the stomach of a beaked whale that had beached on a southwestern Norway coast. The visibly sick, 2-ton goose-beaked whale has been euthanized. One zoologist from Bergen University says the whale&`&s stomach was full of plastic, adding that its intestine "had no food, only some remnants of a squid&`&s head in addition to a thin fat layer".The scientists say the non-biodegradable waste was "probably the reason" why the whale repeatedly beached in shallow waters off Sotra, an island west of Bergen, 200 kilometers northwest of the capital of Oslo.It size, around 6 meters, showed that the whale was an adult. The United Nations estimates that 8 million tons of plastic trash is dumped into the world&`&s oceans each year. This is Special English.Fossils of a newly discovered otter species dating back around 6 million years have been found in southwest China&`&s Yunnan Province. The well-preserved fossil has an almost complete cranium and mandible and a partial skeleton. The otter weighed around 50 kilograms, around the same as a wolf, and measured up to two meters in length, almost double the size of a modern otter.Computed tomography restoration of the skull revealed a combination of otter-like and badger-like skulls and tooth characteristics. One scientist at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County says the species belonged to an extinct group of otters in East Asia.Otters are semi-aquatic predators. Modern otters have worldwide distribution, but their fossil record is poor. The new species outlined the migration paths of otters moving from Southeast Asia to China. It can help scientists better understand the evolution of the animals. This is the end of this edition of Special English. This is Special English. I am Sam Duckett in Beijing. Here is the news. China is open to space cooperation with all nations including the United States. The heavyweight of China's space program, China's first astronaut Yang Liwei, made the remark recently on the occasion of the anniversary of China's first satellite launch 46 years ago. Yang said China does not rule out cooperating with any country, including the United States. The senior astronaut said payload has been reserved in the Chinese space station for international projects and foreign astronauts. The space station is due to enter service around 2022. China marked its first Space Day, which was newly designated by the government to commemorate China's first satellite launch on April 24, 1970. Upon request, China will also train astronauts for other countries, and jointly train astronauts with the European space station. Yang said the future of space exploration lies in international cooperation, and it's true for China as well as for the United States. Citing security reasons, the United States Congress passed a law in 2011 to prohibit NASA from hosting Chinese visitors at its facilities or working with researchers affiliated to any Chinese government entity or enterprise. The ban remains in effect. The US-dominated International Space Station, which unsurprisingly blocks China, is scheduled to end its service in 2024. China's space station will be the only operational one in outer space, at least for a while. This is Special English. Five domestic airlines have agreed to tackle air rage by blacklisting passengers who misbehave. The five airlines, including Air China and China Southern, are the country&`&s major carriers. They will collectively keep records of those who are not behaved. Improper behaviors include attacking on check-in counters, forcibly occupying airplanes and fighting on board an airplane. Passenger records will be shared throughout the country's civil aviation and tourism industries. Those who are blacklisted will face penalties including being denied special seats, ticket discounts, or even service. However, an official from the Civil Aviation University of China said airlines do not have the right to limit passengers&`& travel rights. The official said that although air passenger blacklists have been adopted overseas, there is no legal provision for them in China, adding that this may lead to disputes. Others say that the provisions for the blacklist should be decided by a third party rather than just the airlines. It is the first time that a blacklist has covered most of the domestic civil aviation industry. The five airlines and their subsidiaries handle more than 80 percent of China&`&s air traffic. The decision comes after the China Air Transport Association adopted a new management policy to record uncivilized behavior by air passengers. You are listening to Special English. China banned drug wholesalers from selling vaccines, according to a decision publicized on the nation&`&s Vaccination Day, which fell on April 25th. The decision requires B-class, or non-compulsory, vaccines to be distributed in the same way as A-class, which are covered by the national compulsory immunization program. It also requires disease control departments, hospitals and clinics to keep records of purchases and received inventory. According to the decision, China will establish a system to track vaccines. Enterprises and user agencies must record circulation and use, so all vaccines can be tracked across their life cycle. The public were shocked and appalled in March when the news that improperly stored vaccines worth millions of dollars were sold nationwide. More than 300 officials implicated in cases concerning the event will be penalized. In the eastern city of Ningbo, the number of vaccinated children decreased by around one fourth from March 18 to 31. Local authorities are trying to quell public unease. This is Special English. Individuals and organizations that conduct medically inessential prenatal sex discernment or sex-selective abortions will be fined up to 30,000 yuan, roughly 4,600 U.S. dollars. Under a revised regulation taking effect recently, besides a fine, the government will confiscate the income from such screenings and abortions, which are illegal in China. Those who introduce expectant parents to take up illegal prenatal sex discernment and selective abortion will also face the same punishment. The regulation has been jointly issued by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce and the China Food and Drug Administration. The revision to the law aims to tackle China&`&s high gender imbalance, a direct result of pre-birth sex discernment and sex-selective abortions driven by cultural preference for boys. The birth sex ratio stood at almost 114 in 2015, much higher than a normal ratio between 103 and 107, though it has decreased from 121 in 2004. In China, legitimate reasons for a hospital conducting a sex-selective abortion include serious genetic disease or deadly threat to the mother's health. It requires at least three senior doctors with a genetics background and clinical experience to decide whether prenatal sex discernment is necessary. If an abortion is necessary, the hospital must report the case to the local health department. You are listening to Special English. I&`&m Sam Duckett in Beijing. The State Council has published its major health care reform tasks for the year, with a general practitioner pilot program, and reduced reliance on drug revenue for health centers. This year, 200 cities will trial GP practices, making the service available to 15 percent of urban citizens and 30 percent of key groups. According to the statement from the State Council, China's Cabinet, GPs will open their practices to residents, providing them with basic, consistent medical services. The plan is part of a tiered health system being rolled out across the country. To improve local-level medical institutions, the government will allow physicians in public hospitals to practice or establish their own practices. Another health reform task this year will be the establishment of a pricing mechanism for medicine to reduce the cost born by patients. Patients will be given the choice of buying drugs from hospitals or retail pharmacies. The public hospital reform will be further advanced, as 100 more cities will carry out pilot public hospital reform this year. According to the pilot reform, revenues of public hospitals will not rely on drugs but medical service charges. This is Special English. Chinese scientists are working on new projects inspired by the documented case of a man who was cured of AIDS. They hope eventually find a way to ensure that humans are born with immunity to the condition. Nine years ago, a 41-year-old man, who has since been dubbed the "Berlin patient", was close to death and in the advanced stages of both AIDS and leukemia. Doctors gave him a stem cell transplant from an HIV-resistant donor, and miraculously cured both conditions. The event made him arguably the first person ever to be cured of AIDS. The remarkable case shed light on CCR5, a receptor in humans that helps HIV enter cells. The bone-marrow transplant had changed the Berlin patient&`&s gene to a mutation called CCR5-delta32, which blocks HIV. With new gene technology now available, Chinese scientists have recently moved forward with attempts to modify the CCR5 gene in embryos, advancing their drive to ensure humans are born already immune to HIV. In the latest case, researchers from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University used a gene editing technique to attempt to replace the CCR5 gene in 26 human embryos. The researchers tried to give the embryos the HIV-resistant mutation. Four embryos were successfully edited, while the other 22 cases failed to produce the desired results. Chinese science fiction writer Hao Jingfang was shortlisted for the Hugo Award for her book "Folding Beijing". According to Tsinghua University, where she is pursuing her doctorate, the news was posted on the official website of the World Science Fiction Convention. "Folding Beijing", one of five candidates, is listed under the "Best Novelette" category. Hao said on her Sina Weibo microblog that she is so excited to be shortlisted. The story was first published in a new electronic magazine. She didn&`&t expect to have this result. Hao graduated from the department of physics at Tsinghua University in 2006. The story follows the protagonist, Lao Dao, as he tries to navigate the complicated class barriers of a futuristic Beijing in order to send his daughter to school. She said she used to live in suburban Beijing. Near her apartment building there were noisy alleys, small restaurants and an open-air market. The experience inspired her to write the story. Hao said she regretted that the second volume of "The Three-Body Problem" by Liu Cixin, who won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel, was not shortlisted. Established in 1953, the Hugo Awards are given annually to the best works of science fiction or fantasy and are seen as the "highest honor bestowed in science fiction and fantasy writing. Fifth-three-year old Liu was the first writer in Asia to win the honor. This is Special English. A university in northwest China's Qinghai Province plans to offer international students Master&`&s degrees in traditional Tibetan medicine. Tibetan Medical College of Qinghai University has said that it planned to recruit five foreign postgraduates this autumn. The Master&`&s program will last three years, with students taught in both English and Tibetan. Established in 1987, the college is one of the two higher educational institutes in China which train traditional Tibetan medicine practitioners. The other is in Tibet. The college's honorary president said the school had exchange programs with universities in the United States, Russia, South Korea and Japan since 2007. So far, almost 100 overseas students have come for short-term training in Tibetan medicine. Traditional Tibetan medicine was also listed as optional course at University of Virginia medical school last July. The president said the core of development of Tibetan medicine lies in training. Helping it go global will be beneficial to more people. Tibetan medicine is at least 2,300 years old. It has absorbed the influences of traditional Chinese, Indian and Arab medicines and is mainly practiced in Tibet and the Himalayan region. Tibetan medicine uses herbs, minerals and sometimes insects and animal parts. It was put on the list of China's national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. You're listening to Special English. You know what it is like, you buy a book on a subject of interest and enjoy it. Later you see a book on a similar subject that you probably were not going to buy but do so because it is from that same author. Gradually, you end up with several books from that author in your collection. David Shayler is one such author for me. During the Space Day event in Droitwich earlier this year organised by British Interplanetary Society West Midlands branch, I finally got to meet David. This is a short recording of our conversation I recorded then. The post Episode 51: 5th June 2012: Profile – Author David Shayler appeared first on AstrotalkUK.
