This week, Matt sat down with the Director of Defense Industry Initiatives, Michael Mullins, out of North Carolina State University's Industry Expansion Solutions to talk about North Carolina's integral role in national manufacturing; defense, textiles and more. As lead of defense initiatives with NC's MEP Center, Mullins has an expansive view on how the state leverages its historical strengths in textiles to meet modern defense needs with the help of the MEP and driven by long-time and new manufacturing outfits. Mullins stresses the importance of a strong communication strategy to ensure small manufacturers are aware of the resources available to aid their growth and sustainability, and on the host of warm potential partnerships across academia, workforce ,state and local government and more to build a resilient manufacturing ecosystem capable of responding to national needs. To Mullins, a former Marine and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, adaptability and responsiveness are key qualities of an effective manufacturing ecosystem to deliver value to its manufacturers. One day in the early 2010's Michael came to me, currently an employee in his vape shop, with an idea. What if people wanted their vapes engraved? Well it turns out no one wanted their vapes engraved and we were stuck with a VERY expensive laser and no idea what to do with it. This set us both onto the path that brought us where we are today and I don't think either of us could have even imagined what was ahead. This week, Amber is joined by guest co-host, Michael Mullins! Michael covers Frank Abagnale, the inspiration for the movie "Catch Me If You Can". Frank Abagnale is now an American security and fraud consultant, but is better known as one of the most infamous con-artists of all time. It's been reported that by the age of 19, he had cashed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks while using several different identities. It is believed that he assumed no less than eight identities in his short career as a fraudster, including: an airline pilot, a physician, a lawyer, and a professor. He was captured and sentenced in 1974, but was released after serving about three and a half years of his 12 year sentence, on the condition that he would work alongside the FBI to investigate crimes similar to those that he had committed. But how much of Frank's very public story is true?Sources: www.slashfilms.com / “The Fascinating True (And Not So True) Story Behind Catch Me If You Can” / Shania Russell / August 10, 2022www.WHYY.org / “Catch Me If You Can” / December 31, 2000www.en.wikipedia.org SHOW: Johnny Carson / Episode aired October 4, 1978SHOW: To Tell the Truth / Episode aired in 1977www.youtube.com /Talks @ Google "Frank Abagnale"/recorded November 27, 2017Podcast – Most Notorious / Episode 198: “Catch Me If You Can's Frank Abagnale - Perpetrator of the Ultimate Hoax?
