Locksmith is considered one of the best lyricists to ever come out of the Bay Area. Growing up in Richmond, he co-founded the group The Frontline in the late 90s. Frontline blew up with the help of E-A-Ski's production and landed a record deal. This propelled them to the forefront of what would be termed "The New Bay," and eventually the Hyphy Movement. Locksmith also sharpened his reputation as a battle rapper, participating in freestyle battles against other local legends like Mistah FAB and Clyde Carson. After his groupmate Left put music to the side to pursue a career in education at UC Berkeley, Lock traveled to New York to move his solo career forward. Along the way he put out projects with Dame Dash and Ski Beatz and broke out of the regional Bay Area circuit to become an internationally respected MC. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

On today's episode I speak with filmmakers Laurence Madrigal & Jason O'Mahony. Their new documentary WE WERE HYPHY just premiered at Cinequest 2022. Great film, great chat! Thanks for listening! Kyler -- Social and Web: WE WERE HYPHY Instagram: @wewerehyphy Website: www.wewerehyphy.com -- PRESS RELEASE: WE WERE HYPHY is delighted to announce its World Premiere as part of the prestigious Cinequest 2022 Film Festival. The music documentary captures the hugely kinetic Hyphy movement, and brings the sights and sounds of the San Francisco Bay Area's most influential musical movement of the past 30 years to life on the screen. This music documentary feature traces Hyphy's genesis on Bay Area streets and examines its influence with interviews from legendary figures such as Keak da Sneak and Mistah FAB to modern day artists such as Kamaiyah, Rafael Casal, P-Lo, and G-Eazy who grew up during the movement and were deeply influenced by it. Historical context is provided by columnists and academics such as Pendarvis Harshaw and Dr. Andrea L.S. Moore. “Hyphy had a massive influence on me as a teenager,” says Laurence Madrigal, director of WE WERE HYPHY. “I grew up in Antioch and Hyphy was everywhere. It was on the streets, in our cars, in the clothes we wore, and in the way we spoke. I've always wanted to share my love of Hyphy with the world and this film is a love song to the era!”

What's good quality people?! It's been a long time, and we should not have left you, with out some great pod content to step to, drive to, lay around to…whatever it is that you do when you listen to podcasts. As we gear up to bring you some new content, we thought it an appropriate moment to release some content from the archives featuring our good friend Ekzakt. Zach Perry aka Ekzakt has been grinding it out on these coast as an engineer and producer for a decade plus, cutting tracks for the likes of Andre Nickatina, Mistah Fab, and more recently the legendary Too Short. The two were featured in a recent piece put out by Lauten Audio called Capture, and we were super proud and impressed by the quality piece about the importance of being skilled engineer in addition to your production chops. We love the representation of The Bay, and the story told in the piece is one I got the privilege of witnessing first hand, so it's extra special in that regard. So as we continue to support quality content and quality people, we wanted to share some stories and advice from the man himself back around the inception of the pandemic. You Booked It - How to create a successful entertainment career!
With nearly a decade of experience as a recording artist under his belt, it's hard to believe that **Ztilo** (who first hit the scene under the moniker ‘Cristiles') is still months away from turning 30. The Bay Area product emerged in 2012 with his undeniably infectious hit “Good Times”. The aforementioned single quickly opened doors for the young rising star. The next five years would see Ztilo collaborate with numerous artists, including Mistah Fab, Phora, and Kirko Bangz, along with dozens of live performances in some of the biggest markets in the country. In the later years of the 2010s, Cristiles would take a needed detour from his music career, instead focusing vital energy and growth on his family and the well being of his son. In 2019, he decided to return to music as a new man with a new vision. The core priorities of his life revitalized, Cristiles changed his title to Ztilo and began transitioning from performing primarily as a rapper to becoming a singer with a heavier R&B influence.
