If this contract can be maintained, the rewards are plentiful. But how far has our protagonist gone to see this contractual relationship reach its culmination? This story was written, directed, and engineered by Phillip Clark. This episode tells the story of the city of Toruń, Poland, through the lense of its spicy gingerbread, or pierniki, from 1233 to 2021. Toruń gingerbread were at-first made with a top-secret recipe, and once prised by kings for their taste and by ordinary folk for their perceived medicinal powers. As time went on, they became a contested cultural treasure fought over by German and Polish governments through two world wars and beyond. This is the story of a border town, through centuries of peace and conflict, and its identity as the home of Toruńskie pierniki. The main publication used in preparing this podcast has been Małgorzata Mikulski-Wernerowic and Krzystof Lewandowski's excellent volume, Formy Piernikarskie (Toruń, 2020). "Early in the day it was whispered that we should sail in a boat, only thou and I, and never a soul in the world would know of this our pilgrimage to no country and to no end. In that shoreless ocean, at thy silently listening smile my songs would swell in melodies, free as waves, free from all bondage of words. Is the time not come yet? Are there works still to do? Lo, the evening has come down upon the shore and in the fading light the seabirds come flying to their nests. Who knows when the chains will be off, and the boat, like the last glimmer of sunset, vanish into the night?" — Rabindranath Tagore Well, this one took much longer than expected as well! I'm learning to let go of (or at least relax my grip on) any particular creative vision for an episode and to try to find a vision contained within the pieces available to me. I kept trying to make this episode go one way, but then I couldn't find pieces to fit that vision. Oh, well. I'm happy with how it turned out, though! I'm sorry that the audio quality is a little poorer on a couple of the recordings — but it can't be helped since I've limited myself to using only resources that are in the public domain. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it! William Kentridge, North Pole Map, 2003 Racism and violence in pandemic times: a psychoanalytical point of view.A conversation between Fakhry Davids and Virginia De MiccoIn this episode Fakhry Davids and Virginia De Micco begin with a reflection on the “Black Lives Matter” movement, suggesting a continuity between the inequalities of the past and those involved in societal racism today. They consider how such inequalities are internalized, suggesting that it results in one’s in-group identity being structured as an us-them link with an out-group, in which projective processes are heavily involved. Does the increased sense of vulnerability during times of pandemic produce greater pressure to project fear, danger, or ‘evil’ into the racial others – just at a time when their greater vulnerability is more evident?Fakhry Davids, is a Training and Supervising Analyst of British Society, a member of the International Research Group Geographies of Psychoanalysis, a Board Member of PCCA (Partners in Confronting Collective Atrocities, www.p-cca.org) and Member of the Holmes Commission for Racial Equality, American Psychoanalytic Association.Virginia De Micco, is a Full Member of Italian Society, a member of the International Research Group Geographies of Psychoanalysis, and a Board Member of the group PER (Psicoanalisti Europei per i Rifugiati) of the Italian Society.Etude Op. 25 no. 4 in A minor - 'Paganini' comes from https://musopen.org

In today’s episode Fred Bush will speak about his new paper: Self-Criticism as a Lifeline. Thanks to his clinical vignettes and to his sharp description of the mechanisms that rule the need for self criticism, he will lead us to discover a kind of patient that is different from the one that generally manifest a sense of guilt and melancholia. We’ll see that if they’re not experiencing criticism, these patients encounter the fear of a terrifying void. Because here self criticism is a way to hold on to the primary object.Fred Busch, Ph.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Dr. Busch has published over 70 articles in the psychoanalytic literature, and four books, primarily on the method and theory of treatment. He has been on numerous editorial boards. His work has been translated into ten languages, and he has been invited to present over 160 papers and clinical workshops nationally and internationally. His last two books were Creating a Psychoanalytic Mind: A Method and Theory of Psychoanalysis, published in 20014, and in in March, 2019, The Analyst’s Reveries: Explorations in Bion’s Enigmatic Concept. Michael Berkeley welcomes the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, as his Private Passions. The first woman, the first Scot, and the first openly gay person to hold the post, she was appointed in 2009, having won many awards for her poetry collections since taking first prize in the National Poetry Competition in 1983. Most recently, 'Rapture' (2005) won the TS Eliot Prize, and her latest collection, 'The Bees', won the 2011 Costa Book Award for Poetry. Born into a Roman Catholic family in the Gorbals, a poor area of Glasgow, Carol Ann developed a passionate love of literature at school, and for a decade from the age of 16 she lived with the Liverpool poet Adrian Henri. She had two plays performed at the Liverpool Playhouse and received an honours degree in phoilosophy from the University of Liverpool. In 1996 she was appointed a lecturer in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University and later became creative director of its Writing School. She was appointed Poet Laureate in 2009. Her work as laureate includes poems on the MPs' expenses scandal, the deaths of the last British servicemen who fought in World War I, David Beckham's tendon injury, and the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Her poems, which explore everyday experience and a rich fantasy life, are on the school curriculum in the UK. A keen music-lover, Carol Ann Duffy learnt the piano as a child. Her choices include Chopin's E major Etude Op.10 No.3, which her mother loved to hear her playing; extracts from Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' and and Christy Moore singing a song with words by W B Yeats. This edition, first broadcast in June 2012, is part of Radio 3's celebration of British music - Private Passions' guests this month are four poets from across the UK.
