We talk frequently on this podcast about the emotional well-being of teachers and the overwhelming amount of stress that they endure on a daily basis. Teachers are expected to do so much with often very little support, which ultimately leads to teacher burnout. But my guest on today's episode, Jen Rafferty, shares how her company, Empowered Educator, focuses on the social and emotional aspects of supporting teachers. Jen always wanted to be an educator, but when her circumstances changed, she realized her reason for teaching, to inspire people to discover their voice, could be utilized in another way. Her company, Empowered Educator, does just that. She shares how it got started and gives advice for dealing with fear and disassociating with the idea of pleasing people. Jen's idea of success will help you redefine success and deal with teacher burnout. I don't want to give too much away but here are some teasers! - we discuss our collective trauma from the pandemic and what we must do in order to heal and move forwards - we share our experiences of leaving marriages and moving out in the middle of the lockdown - how to forgive ourselves, so we can become whole - we develop our Apple Pie Theory on healing! Settle in and share in the magic. Presenter and author Jen Rafferty started her teaching career as a middle school teacher in Central New York for 15 years. So many Teacher Moms share with me the overwhelm of “juggling it all” between being a wife, educator, and always on call mom of littles at home. Educators wear many hats, both in and out of the classroom. Yet, with those hats can come a lot of pressure and overwhelm. So many educators have felt a shift in energy starting before Covid and it only escalated as demands increased, yet the time teachers were giving themselves to decompress and take care of their own needs has decreased. We know very well what that will do to our life balance and how it starts to show up both on and off our plates. I have invited Jen Rafferty, the founder of Empowered Educator, to talk about her program for teachers and walk us through some steps on how to feel more fulfilled so that we can continue showing up as the best version of ourselves both at home and for our students. Jen has taught music for 15 years in Central NY. She's also the author of “A Place in the Staff: Finding Your Way as a Music Teacher” & host of the podcast called, Take Notes. She created the Empowered Educator through her years of research in emotional intelligence, mindset, and neuroscience because she wants you to show up as the best version of yourself. On this week's podcast episode you'll hear: Strategies for setting healthy boundaries A healthy mindset so there's less comparison between oneself and colleagues Importance of creating time for self care as a preventative measure Ongoing research about “teacher burnout” Featured on the podcast: Check out Jen's website for more information about Empowered Educator: https://empowerededucator.com/ Tune in to Jen's Podcast, Take Notes here: https://takenoteswithjenrafferty.buzzsprout.com/ Like the show? 157 How Can Schools and Administrators Reduce and Prevent Teacher Burnout?Teacher burnout is something we hear a lot about these days. Burnout is real and is existing at a crisis level. How can schools, admins, and teachers themselves prevent or reduce burnout? Come take a listen. The most important message for teachers to hear is that burnout is not their fault. Yes, there are things we can do to help ourselves, and my guest Jennifer Rafferty talks all about this today. But there is also a great deal of pressure and stress on teachers that is a result of poor systems and expectations. Being a teacher in 2022 often feels demoralizing and as if we are functioning in a system of oppression. When every decision you make is constantly questioned and you are often told to do things that go against what is best for children, it begins to wear you down and burnout is inevitable. Jennifer Rafferty, the creator of the Empowered Educator, shares some very specific and helpful things that we can do to help teachers. Let's dive in.
