As a teenager, Chris Cornell was traumatized by a bad PCP trip that turned him into a recluse for years. Music pulled him out of the darkness when he discovered his four-octave voice by accident – A voice he used to incredible effect as the frontman for both Soundgarden and Audioslave. But the darkness never really went away – it was there in his hometown of Seattle, where tragedies closed the chapter on grunge, and in his music, which was authentic to the very end. Guitarists often use octave shapes to play rhythm guitar parts, riffs, and lead lines. In this podcast episode, I explain how octaves are formed on the guitar fretboard and which popular guitar songs use them.

Pro tip: please watch the short video version of this post that I link to here: www.guitarsuccess4u.com/ACE. It will give you a much clearer grasp of what I'm sharing here.Transcript and diagrams included below…If you're looking for a game-changing strategy for claiming the fretboard quickly and effectively – that most people don't know about – this is the place to start. So first, what's an octave? It's a perfect interval comprised of 12 half steps, where the low note and the high note share the same name, but are located in different registers.Take a look at this legend for a moment. I've got yellow lines to indicate octaves where I skip one string. Note that I need to make an accommodation for the tuning, as I traverse the Major 3rd in the tuning on the way to strings 2 and 1.Then I have a blue line that shows where I can play an octave as I skip two strings – and still play the notes simultaneously with my fretting hand. I'll do this only from strings 5 to 2 today. Lastly, I have a green line to indicate a double octave from strings 6 to 1, as I skip four strings. All of these lines will come into play with the three diagrams I'm about to walk you through. Remember, I'm working with octaves that can be played simultaneously with my fretting hand. Now before we continue, I'm going to let you in on a little secret that will reveal how the fretboard works in this situation, through a mathematical sequence of numbers. You ready?Think of the three lowest single-digit odd numbers in decreasing order. What are they? 5, 3, 1. Now, how about the three lowest single-digit even numbers in decreasing order? They are: 6, 4, 2. Try saying those sequences back to back a couple times, starting with the odds.5, 3, 1, 6, 4, 2, 5, 3, 1, 6, 4, 2.As you will soon see, these numbers tell us which string to use as we map out the octaves from low to high on the frets. We have a 6-string instrument. Between frets 0 and 11, a single note appears only once per string, so how many instances of that note will we find on the fretboard inside that frontier? Six instances.I'm providing three diagrams I'll reference as I continue forward.Let's start with the A notes. Observe (on the accompanying video) as I connect these notes together by four octaves, and one double octave. Starting with the lowest note fret-wise on the open 5th string, the A notes are on strings 5, 3, 1, 6, 4, 2. If we know how to form the octaves, the notes just fall into place, using our sequence of descending odd and even numbers. Notice that the C notes start “mid-sequence,” beginning on string 2.The E notes can start off with a double octave, indicated by a green line from strings 1 to 6.As a bonus (in the video) I can start on string 6, and actually make my way all the way up to the 12th fret of the 1st string to make this even more neatly laid out for you, with the descending even numbers, followed by the descending odd numbers. So today, we learned how to map out the fretboard octaves with the notes: A, C, and E. And what does that spell? ACE! We just figured out how to ACE our fretboard with octaves! What does this help us do? Anything we want! Moveable chords, scales, arpeggios, capo positions, the CAGED System, and more. It literally unlocks our fretboard for us!Well, hopefully, there were some “lightbulbs” that appeared over your head during this quick lesson. As you can imagine, there's so much more. We covered three notes today – and there are technically 12 notes…and you better believe that we cover all of them from multiple angles inside GuitarSuccess4U, leading to mastery of the fretboard. We don't just focus on fretboard KNOWLEDGE, though. We take time for the APPLICATION of that knowledge to cultivate artistry and musicianship. This experience at GuitarSuccess4U could be what's missing from your guitar journey. Please head on over to GuitarSuccess4U.com to see what we're all about. Thanks for having some serious fun with me today, sharpening your skills. The Eighth Husband and the Bride: How the Book of Tobit Echoes the Story of Jesus and His Church Listen to how the Book of Tobit unveils the narrative of Jesus and His Church. During the readings before the Gospel this week, we encountered passages from the Book of Tobit. But what is the significance of these readings to the Church? Why are they held in such high regard? Please note that the first reading is not included in this audio. The Church intends to impart a lesson to us through these readings. It goes beyond simply recounting the trials faced by a family from ancient times. In the Homily, we learn about an angel, Tobit, Tobias, and Sarah. Both Tobit and Sarah are afflicted, and through their prayers, an angel comes to assist them in their struggles. Sarah has been married seven times, and tragically, all her previous husbands were killed on their wedding day. Tobias becomes her eighth husband. The number seven holds significant symbolism in Scripture, representing fullness, and the Homily provides multiple examples of this. Tobias, as the eighth husband, also carries significance as the number eight is likewise employed throughout Scripture, such as in Octaves. The Homily delves into greater detail on this topic. While following the unfolding of this story, it is crucial not to overlook why the Church considers it so important. It is not merely a tale of a family presenting itself before us. In Scripture, there are seven great men, seven great patriarchs: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and David. All these men served as vessels of God for all of humanity, propelling progress forward. However, they eventually passed away without establishing a complete union between God and His people. Then came the eighth great one—Jesus Christ. The Church is represented as the bride, and Jesus is the groom. Take note of how the Book of Tobit relates to the unfolding story of Jesus and His Church. The Church holds the Book of Tobit in incredibly high esteem; it is not solely about a family from centuries ago. Listen to this Meditation Media for further insights.
The technique of playing double-stopped octaves can strike fear into the hearts of many a cellist – it certainly can be a daunting and overwhelming concept for players. But it doesn't have to be. Here to give his tips on practising and teaching octaves for cellists, as well as how to avoid ‘mental catastrophising' is Seth Parker Woods. Seth is a Grammy-nominated cellist who is assistant professor of practice - Cello and Chamber Music at Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California, and he provides a Technique article in our brand new March issue on this topic. The problem of the large and growing variety of elements perplexed chemists, who attempted to bring order to the chaos. We learn about Döbereiner's triads, Pettenkofer and Dumas's correlations of multiples of atomic weights, Newlands's Law of Octaves, and Chancourtois's Telluric Screw. Kekulé's Karlsruhe conference brought order to some chemical chaos, and was the launching point for Dmitri Mendeleev and his periodic table, while Lothar Meyer almost beat Mendeleev for bragging rights. Mendeleev's close friend Alexander Borodin was a chemist AND composer, and we hear from guest Alan Rothenberg on Borodin's life and music.Support the show
Octaves are everywhere. There are very few harp pieces that don't include octaves somewhere, and with good reason. Octaves add richness to a left hand accompaniment or to a right hand melody. The added resonance of the string played an octave lower or higher makes the entire harp come alive with sound. We harpists love octaves and we play them all the time. So why are they often the hardest intervals to play well? You know what I mean. Your thumb plays two strings at once, or your fourth finger brushes the surrounding strings, making your octave sound like a cluster of sound rather than a clear, clean interval. Sometimes they are hard to place accurately and our fingers buzz or just play the wrong notes. It's time to go back to basics, my friends. Don't feel discouraged; this is what we all do from time to time when a fundamental part of our technique isn't working. It's not a failure. It's merely a coordination we need to refresh. Often giving our fingers a gentle reminder of the proper technique is all we need to fix the problem. Of course this raises some questions. What exactly is the proper technique for octaves? Is it the same for right hand and left hand? What are the best practice strategies for octaves ? How can I be more consistently accurate with my placing? I've struggled with those questions myself over my years of harp playing and I do have some valuable insights to share, including the one tip that all by itself will help your octaves sound 100% better almost immediately. So if that one tip works so well, why have I devoted an entire podcast episode to octaves? Because there are some other key things you will want to understand about octaves. Octaves are too important to just skip the finer points; you'll want to know those too. If by chance you are a finger-style guitar player, or have had some experience with finger-style guitar playing, then lesson # 3 for “Danza Mora” will be right up your alley! You will be using octaves between the first and fourth strings for your melody while accompanying that melody with some running eight-notes on the bass strings. (For an introduction to the most effective use of octaves, please watch these two videos: Octaves Video #1 Octaves Video #2 Towards the end of the section, you will repeat some rapid legado movements between fingers one and four while striking those--somewhat haunting--arabesque bass notes. I want you to pay particularly close attention to the aforementioned legado by holding tightly to the first fret before finally letting go to the open position, and make sure to use a metronome while you practice this section! I know you'll really enjoy this one!

Fr. John, Fr. James, and Br. Peter explain the significance of the Octaves and how they are celebrated within the community.
I've taught you several falsetas for the rumba now (all at increasing levels of difficulty), but now you're going to enjoy a little break from all the fast picado you saw in the last lesson. …And notice I said that it would be only a “little break.” Trust me. After the last falseta we went through, anything following that would rightfully be considered by most players to be a well deserved “break.” You will be using octaves on the fourth and first strings for this falseta. Octaves are very easy to fret for two reasons. First, the fretting hand naturally forms to the octave shape. Second, no matter where you move your fretting hand, the fretting positions do not change! That's good news, right? As for the right hand, you will strike the fourth string with the thumb (p) while striking the first string with either the index (i) or the middle (m) finger. Remember to alternate between the index and middle each time you play these octaves, which is to say, play like this: p-i, p-m, p-i, p-m, etc.; and NOT like this: p-i, p-i, p-i, p-i, etc. As always, remember to take it slow, paying close attention to what you are doing, which means you should be listening to what you are playing. This is the next in my series of conversations with filmmaker Michael Wood, where we discuss some of poet C. Subramania Bharati's most famous and important contributions as a champion of women's rights. Bharati believed that women should be leaders, writing, in a poem entitled "Pudumai Penn," that the "new kind of woman" he imagined would "write all the laws" for society. No advocate of women's rights has been more impassioned, in India or elsewhere, during Bharati's times or since - or more convincing. Episode 4 features A. Kanyakumari's "Melting Aura" played by her Carnatic String Ensemble. She writes: "This piece as the name suggests melts the listener's mood with its beautiful structure and scintillating Raga – the Charukesi. Though the piece is Indian Classical in its tone, the arrangement gives it another dimension without compromising the authenticity of the respective genres." It also excerpts a scintillating performance on the ghatam, a traditional clay pot used as a percussion instrument in South Indian classical music, by leading ghatam maestro Suresh Vaidyanathan. In this next episode with world-renowned filmmaker Michael Wood ("The Story of India"), the theme is Bharati's beloved Tamil language, and the poet's fight to preserve it against the encroachment of English. Bharati's concerns are highly relevant in today's world, where linguistic diversity is globally threatened, and the poet's attitude offers fascinating ways of meeting this challenge. Michael and Mira explore the idea of a future where Indian literature takes its place alongside major works from the Western canon, and quality translation forges new paths between cultures, building new hopes for mutual understanding.
