Afgelopen week verscheen Confessions II, de eerste echt goede Madonna plaat in vele jaren. Toch staan de comment secties ook nu weer vol met berichten dat de zangeres moet stoppen, dat ze zich als 67-jarige niet sexy moet kleden, en dat de dansvloer voor jonge mensen is. Madonna is het wel gewend, ze krijgt al sinds de vroege jaren negentig te horen dat ze te oud is. En verder: Nederlandse artiesten als Naaz, IJSLAND en De Staat gebruiken hun podium op Down The Rabbit Hole om écht iets te zeggen.

Huba de Graaff is componist. Ze staat bekend om haar inventieve en experimentele composities, waarin ze vaak elektronische media gebruikt. In de jaren ‘80 en ‘90 speelde ze viool in popbands als ‘Transister' en maakte ze muziektheaterstukken als ‘Corenicken' en ‘Hephaistos'. Later maakte ze onder andere de opera's ‘Diepvlees' en ‘De dood van Poppaea' en een reeks muziektheaterproducties waarin de relatie tussen spraak en zang wordt onderzocht. Dit doet ze, samen met de Nederlands-Koerdische zangeres Naaz, ook in haar nieuwe opera ‘Qaqnas', waarin stem, elektronica en verzet centraal staan. Qaqnas (Koerdisch voor ‘feniks') is een Koerdische opera met elektronica en poëzie, die gaat over vrijheid, kracht en het opeisen van ruimte. Ellen Deckwitz gaat met Huba de Graaff in gesprek.

We zijn inmiddels een maand verder, en Lowlands is nog altijd niet uitverkocht. Hoewel MOJO Concerts voorlopig geen paniek zegt te hebben, lijkt er toch wel degelijk iets aan de hand in de festivalwereld. Waren het voorheen vooral festivals met te weinig eigen smoel die het moeilijk hadden, nu begint het langzaam te knabbelen aan onomstreden festivals als Lowlands, Down The Rabbit Hole en Wildeburg. In deze speciale uitzending van Wat blijft vanaf theaterfestival De Parade gaat Lara Billie Rense in gesprek met Joost Oomen en De Poezieboys, die een theatervoorstelling maakten over de Spaanse dichter Federico García Lorca. In het diepste geheim werkte Lorca aan zijn surrealistische toneelstuk Het Publiek. Dit stuk, dat de dichter vanwege de Spaanse burgeroorlog bij een vriend moest verstoppen, vormt zevenentachtig jaar later het startpunt voor het toneelstuk LORCA. Naaz is a Dutch-Kurdish alternative pop singer that brilliantly exemplifies what this podcast is all about. I'd forgive you for mistaking this series as a podcast about music, after all, I do talk to a lot of musicians. But no, this series is really about humanity and you have to admit, behind every great song and every great album is some form of hardship, some form of adversity, and quite frankly; a lot of tough shit. Naaz is no exception to that, having not only dealt with the usual struggles of everyday life but also having to navigate cultural clashes, societal pressures, and inner self-doubt. However, the result of navigating those hardships is an invigorating debut album called Never Have I Ever. Creating this album was in many ways a lifeline for Naaz, with the central question being “Who do I want to be?” We explore that and more across our chat.

Zangeres Naaz (24) brak op haar zestiende door met het tv-programma Holland's Got Talent. Daarna maakte ze pijlsnel carrière en won ze twee Edisons. Zo snel als Naaz kwam, zo snel verdween ze. Twee jaar geleden stopte ze van het een op het ander moment met alles. Ze was oververmoeid en voelde zich gebruikt door de muziekindustrie. Nu is ze weer helemaal terug. Niet alleen als zangeres maar ook als schrijfster. In De Geknipte Gast vertelt ze over haar jeugd en haar ouders die vluchtten voor de Golfoorlog. Over de trauma's van haar ouders die haar ook vormden. En ze gaat in op de reden waarom ze destijds stopte en met welke nieuwe plannen ze nu bezig is. 

Deze week ga ik in gesprek met artiest Naaz. Een bijzondere Koerdisch Nederlandse vrouw die op haar 18e doorbrak met een nummer dat ze maakte op haar slaapkamer. Ze werd dé grote popbelofte van 2018. Ze won twee Edisons. Stond op Lowlands en trad zelfs internationaal op. En daarna, ineens was ze weg. Drie jaar lang hoorde we weinig van haar. Er was teveel gebeurd in haar leven. Ze had tijd nodig. Voor haar zelf. Om te helen, om vrij te worden.En nu is ze terug. Met nieuwe muziek en nieuwe kracht. Ze bracht haar eerste échte album uit waarop ze persoonlijker en kwetsbaarder is dan ooit. Muziek rechtstreeks uit haar hart. En met die muziek wist ze, eigenwijs als ze is, geheel independant, Carré uit te verkocht voor haar comeback concert.In de podcast praten we over hoe de afgelopen jaren voor haar zijn geweest en bespreken we waarom ze nu vrijer kan maken dan ooit. Luckily for The Tea Room, political reporter Holly Payne steps in today to lead us through the top stories of the year so far. First up, Holly spills the tea on her investigations into Ozempic and the marketing antics of manufacturer Novo Nordisk. Holly says the big pharma has now been suspended from a leading UK industry group for promotional misdemeanours. “Novo Nordis partly funded an event that promoted one of their semaglutide drugs but they did not mention any side effects of the drug. They've also sponsored the creation of weight loss medicine units (of curricula) for medical students,” Holly says. Massive demand for weight loss treatment has led to supply shortages in Australia but according to Holly's sources this probably won't improve until mid-year. Meanwhile, the dilemma continues as to who is most entitled to the weight loss/diabetes drug. Holly also delves into the payroll tax verdict and what the judges said in the Thomas and Naaz case. She contacted each state and territory to check for differences and reveals that Queensland is offering clinic owners an amnesty till 2025. However, Holly says that Western Australia is the premium state of choice for GPs who want to preserve their thin profit margin. “Western Australia is the fun outlier in that it's not part of the harmonized tax provisions. When I've corresponded with the WA tax office, they've basically said, “Thomas and Naaz doesn't apply here and we consider all GPs as contractors until otherwise”,” Holly said. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) also takes the centre field in our political update, as Holly discusses a class action lawsuit against the AFL. She said that while the RACGP is calling for a change to codes none of the peak Australian sports medicine bodies have officially acknowledged the link between sports-related head knocks and CTE "They did indicate that they would likely be updating their position on CTE but there's no guarantee of when that will actually come out. It's often thought that the sports medicine bodies are particularly quite close to industry,” Holly said. As players and sporting institutions battle it out Holly suggests this is one game to watch. Who eventually gets the red card may have an expensive bill. “We've already seen a class action happen in America with gridiron. Those players won a $1 billion payout,” Holly said. Hosted on Acast. Naaz Mohammad is singer-songwriter. Op haar nieuwe album wil ze laten zien dat ze isveranderd.
