In addition to free books for preK-6th grade readers, there will be plenty of free family activities and snacks while supplies last. When we read books that have characters of all races, genders, and backgrounds, students discover their own voices and learn from the voices of others. Let's come together to kick off a great summer by celebrating diverse readers, so we can set all students up for success!Featured Education Matters guest: Tiffany Thomas, Hilliard Education Association member Tiffany Thomas is a 17 year dedicated educator and advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in the Hilliard City School District. She is a native of Columbus, Ohio, a proud graduate of Columbus City Schools, and mother to a fierce three year old little girl. She has been an English Language Arts teacher for the past sixteen years and recently transitioned into the position of Innovative Media Specialist at Hilliard Bradley High School. During her time in the classroom,Tiffany has focused her approach on developing lessons and standards aligned curriculum for grade level courses that incorporated culturally relevant teaching practices, helped develop the district wide ELA curriculum , and represented her colleagues as a Hilliard Education Association Building Representative. Graduating from Ohio University in 2005 with a Bachelor's of Science in Integrated Language Arts and from The Ohio State University in 2008 with a Master's of Arts in Diversity Studies, Tiffany has honed her skill and love for culturally relevant education through her teaching practices and numerous professional development opportunities she has created and led in her district and community. Throughout her professional journey, Tiffany responded to her colleagues' need for meaningful professional development by creating opportunities for teachers to share in their own journeys with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She has been able to create opportunities for teachers to work with authors such as Jason Reynolds, Brendan Kiely, Mindy McGinnis and Natalie Richards, concerning valuing student experience in the classroom. In the spring of 2020, the murder of George Floyd sparked amovement within the Hilliard City School District that created a need for strategies and pedagogies when trying to embrace the black, brown, and disenfranchised voices within the classroom. Tiffany partnered with a group of colleagues, Pam Antos, Kelsey Burkett, Daniel Redman, and Lane Vanderhule, to lead the charge and create professional development opportunities for teachers centering on embracing anti-racist pedagogy and practice within our classrooms. In efforts to create an environment that every student feels comfortable, accepted and heard, Tiffany has taken the reins of the DEI efforts within her building, helping to lead a team of teachers in both culturally relevant teaching and restorative practices. She has also led professional development for other HSCD diversity facilitators as well as helping them to develop effective DEI teams throughout the district. Furthering the chance to always value student voice, Tiffany leads the Diversity Club, a student group that meets monthly to discuss current DEI topics and theeffects of these issues on them as high school students and members of the global society. These conversations are open to all and are a transformative experience for both students and staff. This year Tiffany was recognized as the 2023 OCTELA Outstanding English Language Arts Educator in the Secondary category and nominated to represent Ohio as a Teacher of Excellence at NCTE. Today we focus on the NAVIGATE study, a randomised trial of an online decision aid for men and their partners recently diagnosed with localised prostate cancer. Active surveillance is the preferred option for many men with low-risk prostate cancer, and may also be recommended for some men with favourable intermediate-risk prostate cancer, but many patients find the idea of surveillance to be stressful, and find the choice of management options to be bewildering. So today we chat with some of the team behind the NAVIGATE study which is designed to address some of these issues. NAVIGATE is running in Australia, sponsored by Swinburne University with the trial team based at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Joining us in studio are Natalie Richards who is a research nurse and NAVIGATE Project Manager, Alan White, patient representative on the project, and via Zoom is Dr Matt Roberts, a urologist in Brisbane who is actively enrolling patients. We also hear from a patient who is actively participating in the study and provides a terrific perspective having been on surveillance initially, and then went on to have surgery when his cancer changed while on surveillance. Your co-hosts are Declan Murphy and Renu Eapen from Peter Mac. NAVIGATE is 80% recruited and is expected to finish recruitment in 2021. See below for details of how to find out more. Patients may be referred by their clinician or may self-refer directly to the NAVIGATE team if their cancer is suitable for surveillance. The Principal Investigator is Professor Penelope Schofield and the trial is funded by an NHMRC grant. What are your goals in this sport? We all have set goals in this sport as bodybuilders - if your name is missing in the "ALL" list, please take time to reflect on what you want to achieve as a competitor. More often than not, we work vigorously toward the goals that we set out to realize. But along the way we encounter obstacles, and we eventually give up and call it quits. Such obstacles might include struggling to stay the prepping course, finding the right coach, handling the judge's critiques, to mention but a few. If this is you and you are wondering how some people manage to stay persistent, and eventually overcome, you're in the right place. Natalie has some tips that will help you stay the persistence track. Natalie Richards is an IFBB pro and has been competing for the past two and a half years. Through persistence and hard work, Natalie won her Pro Card in the 2018 NPC Junior Nationals. Natalie has successfully worked her way up to compete in some of the most prestigious stages such as New York Pro and Pittsburgh Pro. Besides competing, Natalie works as a Purchasing Manager for Ghost Lifestyle, a sports nutrition, and supplement company. In today's episode, Natalie talks about the importance of persistence in the sport of bodybuilding and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable in all situations that life throws on you. Natalie also shares how she continues to overcome her struggles and improve to become a better athlete. Finally, she shares some of the experiences she's had with a past coach, and the lesson she's learned to help further her career. Let's go! Takeaways Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it Take everything with a grain of salt, learn the experience and move on to the next thing Be persistent; don't stop Help other people through their struggles Put in the work Be disciplined Be persistent enough to push yourself to new limits Get comfortable being uncomfortable Enjoy the process Know yourself and understand your body Listen to your body and be in tune with it Never let one bad placement or even a handful of bad placements derail you Important Questions [00:06:38] How long have you been competing? In this episode, Kurt speaks with Young Adult author Natalie Richards. She's the author of "Six Months Later" and "One Was Lost." They talk about what it means to be a "good" writer and how many books Natalie actually wrote before one was good enough to be published (a lot). Natalie also talks about thinking like a writer and how what you're reading can impact what you write. There's even a little discussion about why writing Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter fan fiction helped jump start her writing career - and if that doesn't make you want to listen, we don't know what will!
